When they arrived, Lin Xiaoxiao and Xia Linchuan were the first to get to the private room, and after a few minutes, Sheng Qian and Chen Nan joined them.
“Where’s the class rep? He didn’t come with you?” Lin Xiaoxiao asked.
Sheng Qian and Chen Nan took their seats without answering.
Gradually, Lin Xiaoxiao and Xia Linchuan fell silent too.
After about a minute, Lin Xiaoxiao couldn’t hold it any longer and, thinking she was whispering, tugged on Xia Linchuan under the table. “What’s going on? Why are they sitting with a gap between them?”
Xia Linchuan said, “I want to know too! Why aren’t they talking? It’s so awkward.”
Chen Nan, in particular, looked like he was about to explode, his face so dark it seemed he might go off any second.
“I can hear you!” Chen Nan suddenly snapped.
Xia Linchuan and Lin Xiaoxiao straightened up immediately, grinning awkwardly under Chen Nan’s piercing glare.
“Should we order something first?” Xia Linchuan suggested. “Then when the class rep and the others get here, we can order the rest.”
The two across the table stayed silent, so Xia Linchuan quickly called over the waiter.
Ladies first—Lin Xiaoxiao finished ordering and passed the menu to Chen Nan.
Chen Nan took the pen and marked a few items at random since he hadn’t had BBQ much before. Then, with a cold face, he slid the menu over to Sheng Qian.
Sheng Qian added his selections quickly, and the menu was back with Xia Linchuan in no time.
“Alright,” Xia Linchuan glanced over the menu and then looked at Sheng Qian, frowning. He knew what Lin Xiaoxiao had ordered, so he noticed that Sheng Qian had barely added anything new, mostly just marking a “+1” after Chen Nan’s choices.
“Are you okay with just eating what Chen Nan ordered?” Xia Linchuan asked, puzzled. “It looks like…you just marked everything he ordered?”
“Do you two have the same taste?”
“…”
Sheng Qian stayed silent, and Xia Linchuan, thinking he might be hesitant to spend, said, “Don’t worry about the cost. This is my family’s restaurant; it won’t cost too much.”
Then he picked up the pen and added, “How about seafood? Grilled squid? Prawns? Squid tentacles? Should we get six servings, one for each? Or maybe twelve, just to start?”
“He can’t eat it,” Chen Nan cut in abruptly, “He’s allergic to seafood.”
Xia Linchuan was taken aback. “Who is?”
“….” Sheng Qian spoke up. “Me. I’m allergic to seafood, especially squid.”
“Oh, alright. We’ll take out your portion then. Ten servings to start.”
Sheng Qian glanced at Chen Nan, who avoided looking back, clenching his jaw in frustration.
A few minutes later, Lu Jingran and Zhou Le arrived.
Zhou Le sat down next to Lin Xiaoxiao, who whispered with great curiosity, “The class rep actually came to pick you up? What’s going on between you two?”
Zhou Le, feeling drowsy and sluggish, mumbled, “Huh?”
Lin Xiaoxiao then noticed, “Are you sick?”
Zhou Le nodded, his nose making a congested sound.
Xia Linchuan also noticed and asked, “Zhou Le, what’s up? You were fine last night.”
Zhou Le replied, “I don’t know, maybe I got a chill while delivering food.”
Xia Linchuan squinted his eyes. “No way, that’s way too fast to fall sick. Could it be… could it be that you ran into something unclean while walking at night? Let me tell you, I had a similar experience once. I was feverish for days, getting IV drips didn’t help, and I wasn’t even coughing—just burning up. It messed me up real bad. In the end, I had to get someone to do a spiritual cleanse, and that finally sorted it out.”
“You coming home so late every night isn’t going to cut it. You should talk to Uncle Zhou and get home earlier. You’re weak, after all, and you’re a Beta. Trust me, sooner or later, this is going to be a problem.”
Zhou Le lowered his head and blinked.
Going home earlier? He’d love to, but he didn’t have the money for that.
“We’ll see,” Zhou Le replied weakly.
At that moment, Lu Jingran suddenly stood up. “I’ll be back in a bit.”
He directed the words to Zhou Le, who sat beside him.
Xia Linchuan immediately reached for the menu. “Hey, class rep, pick some dishes before you go.”
“I’m fine with anything. You guys decide,” Lu Jingran said, heading out.
When he got to the restaurant’s entrance, he seemed to remember something and turned back to the counter. “Do you have anything light, suitable for someone who’s sick?”
—
By the time Lu Jingran returned, Zhou Le was nearly asleep. His head was swimming, but the faint scent on Lu Jingran stirred him awake.
Looking up, he saw Lu Jingran carrying a plastic bag, which he placed in front of him.
Before Zhou Le could figure out what it was, Lu Jingran explained, “Cold medicine. This one’s for sore throat; take one before bed. This one’s for nasal congestion and dizziness; take it twice a day.”
“There are options for wind-cold, wind-heat, and viral infections in here. When you get home, go to a nearby clinic and find out which type you have so you can take the right one. If you’re not better in two days, get an IV drip. Let me know, and I’ll go with you.”
Zhou Le hadn’t expected that Lu Jingran had gone out just to buy medicine for him. For a moment, he was stunned.
And he wasn’t the only one. Everyone at the table froze as well.
Sheng Qian took it calmly, staying composed. Chen Nan, clueless as always, just looked back and forth between Lu Jingran and Zhou Le, sensing something strange but unable to figure out what.
The most surprised were Lin Xiaoxiao and Xia Linchuan—especially Lin Xiaoxiao. Girls are naturally intuitive and perceptive, and something about the way Lu Jingran treated Zhou Le struck a chord.
No way. Did he really just buy the medicine and come back this fast? This is… way too considerate, isn’t it?
She shot a glance at Xia Linchuan, who knowingly winked back at her.
Unusual. Way too unusual.
“But… I already have some at home,” Zhou Le finally reacted, a little late.
Lu Jingran replied, “These are stronger and will work faster than what you have.”
That was true.
Zhou Le looked down at the bag full of medicine. Even from the packaging, it was obvious the medications were expensive.
How am I supposed to repay this favor in the future?
“This will help you recover faster. Don’t you still have to deliver food?” Lu Jingran added.
That point left Zhou Le with no argument, so he accepted the medicine.
Still, he quietly leaned over to Lu Jingran and whispered, “How much was all this? Let me know so I can transfer the money to you.”
Perhaps it was because he wasn’t feeling well, but Zhou Le’s eyes were misty and dazed, and his breaths came out warm with heat.
Lu Jingran didn’t argue further; he simply agreed.
In a few moments, the skewers arrived.
Big and juicy, with a strong aroma of spices, they immediately drew everyone’s attention. Despite being unwell, Zhou Le’s eyes widened when he saw the meat. As he weakly reached out to grab a skewer, Lu Jingran stopped him.
Zhou Le: ?
At that moment, the waitress came in, holding a handful of skewers. “Who ordered the ones with less seasoning?”
Lu Jingran raised his hand. “Over here.”
He stood up to take the skewers from her and placed them in front of Zhou Le. “These are for you. The others are too spicy; you won’t be able to handle them.”
Zhou Le swallowed; his throat was indeed sore. The milder skewers weren’t overly salty and retained the meat’s natural flavor. Eating them, he felt like his cold was half-cured. Unbeknownst to him, a bit of oil had smudged the corner of his mouth, but he was too focused on eating to notice.
Eat more, build up your protein, he thought. There’s not much of that back home.
Lu Jingran watched him eat, barely having a skewer himself. By then, Zhou Le had polished off five skewers. He was genuinely hungry.
Feeling thirsty, Zhou Le was about to grab something to drink when a cup of warm water was handed to him. He looked over at Lu Jingran, who gestured for him to take it.
Grateful, Zhou Le took the cup. The warmth felt comforting as he drank, easing him a bit.
Unbeknownst to him, a bit of oil and sesame seeds had stuck to the corner of his mouth.
While it wasn’t noticeable to him, Lin Xiaoxiao, sitting nearby, felt the need to address it—she had a mild touch of OCD.
“Hey, Zhou Le, you’ve got something… right there…”
He didn’t get what she meant.
Clicking her tongue, Lin Xiaoxiao reached for a napkin to help, but then watched in surprise as Lu Jingran tilted Zhou Le’s head and gently wiped the corner of his mouth.
His gaze softened as he focused on Zhou Le, moving the napkin carefully over his lips.
Lin Xiaoxiao’s eyes widened.
Zhou Le, too, hadn’t expected Lu Jingran to suddenly move so close. He flinched, but Lu Jingran held his chin, leaving him unable to pull back.
The alpha was focused, methodically cleaning Zhou Le’s mouth. The thin napkin pressed against Zhou Le’s lips, his fingers following gently.
The alpha’s face was close. Zhou Le froze, holding his breath. He didn’t dare move, fearing his sick breath might infect Lu Jingran. He even forgot to take the napkin to clean himself.
“All done.” Lu Jingran released him, moving back.
Zhou Le exhaled, finally able to breathe. He turned away, only to meet Lin Xiaoxiao’s wide-eyed, questioning stare.
Feeling oddly guilty, Zhou Le quickly focused back on his skewers, though he couldn’t pinpoint why he felt that way.
Seeing Zhou Le shove skewers into his mouth absentmindedly made Lu Jingran uneasy. It wasn’t safe, especially for someone feeling foggy from being sick. So he began taking the meat off each skewer with chopsticks and placed it in Zhou Le’s bowl, just one step away from feeding him directly.
Lin Xiaoxiao looked on, her jaw practically on the floor. She couldn’t believe how patient and gentle Lu Jingran was being. It was so tender, so… close?
Could this really be Lu Jingran? And why was he treating Zhou Le like this?!
