Chapter 40 – Extra Story
<Previous Chapter<Table of Contents>
Chen Rui posted a picture of the diamond ring on his Moments, which ignited a frenzy of reactions and discussions.
Chen Ting was the first to demand an explanation. “You little brat, do you still consider us as your family? How could you not tell us beforehand about such a big thing?”
Chen Rui’s response was casual and nonchalant, as if her outburst was unwarranted. “Didn’t you see my post?”
Chen Ting was incensed. “Is that all you have to say for yourself?” she snapped. “You just show off on your social media and that’s it?”
Chen Rui asked, “What do you mean by showing off?”
Chen Ting continued, “I don’t even know you, Chen Rui. You must have been waiting for this day for a long time. You have incredible patience.”
“Are Mom and Dad home?”
“Mom and Dad? They don’t want to talk to you. The tension at home is very strange right now.”
“I’ll be home soon.”
“Alone?”
“Hmm.”
“Where’s Xiao Tan?”
“I’ll talk to Mom and Dad first.”
Chen Ting threatened him, “Be careful. Mom and Dad might not approve.”
Chen Rui laughed, “Your sister’s husband and parents have already approved. How can they stop Xiao Tan?”
“Who are you implying?”
“You heard it wrong.”
When Chen Rui arrived home, Chen Kaisheng and his wife had already heard the whole story from Chen Ting.
They were both extremely surprised. Chen Kaisheng sighed and said, “If only this kid had the courage I had back in my day, he wouldn’t have left earlier, and all of this waiting wouldn’t have been necessary.”
“That’s right.” Zeng Xinyun gave him a glance. “Who could possibly be as difficult as you?” She couldn’t help but feel sorry for her son, who had been single for so long despite harboring feelings for someone. She turned to Chen Ting and questioned, “Why didn’t you inform me earlier?”
Chen Ting defended herself, “It wouldn’t have made a difference. I gave them plenty of chances, but they’re hopeless. In cases like this, no matter how much we try to stir things up, it’s all for nothing.” Just then, she noticed Chen Rui’s presence and couldn’t resist the opportunity to gloat, “Oh, the little lovebird is back.”
It was no secret that lovers rarely admitted their status.
After considering many factors, the wedding was finally scheduled to take place on the lush grassland near the Chen family’s villa on the outskirts of Haicheng.
As the wedding banquet approached, Sun Yutan awaited in the lounge, radiating elegance and grace. Her hair and makeup were flawless, and layers of white veil cascaded around her, adding to her beauty. Beside her sat Lu Yuxi, dressed in a pink flower girl outfit with a flower wreath on her head, looking at Sun Yutan with curiosity. She looked like a cute little princess.
Chen Rui, dressed in a sharp suit and leather shoes, sat nonchalantly on the armrest of the sofa, whispering to his little niece, “Call her Auntie.”
Lu Yuxi exclaimed, “Auntie is so pretty!”
Sun Yutan chuckled and teased her, “XiXi looks beautiful too. Are you going to be a bride someday?”
Lu Yuxi shook her head vigorously and replied, “No.”
“Why not?” Sun Yutan pointed to Zhuo Zhan, who was crawling on the windowsill nearby, and joked, “Look, your groom is over there.”
“No…” Lu Yuxi squirmed and attempted to wriggle closer to Sun Yutan, but was quickly scooped up by Chen Ting. The doting mother let her daughter go play with Zhuo Zhan and then shooed Chen Rui away. “What are you doing here?”
After Chen Rui left, Chen Ting let out a deep sigh of relief, feeling like a heavy burden had been lifted off her shoulders. “I have been waiting for this day for so long,” she said, looking at Sun Yutan with a smile.
Sun Yutan was curious and asked, “When did you find out, Chen Ting?”
“That summer,” Chen Ting replied. “My poor younger brother waited for you day and night, but you went on a date with another boy.” She smiled mysteriously. “Xiao Tan, Chen Rui loves you deeply. Don’t let him down, okay?”
Although she said it in a light tone, her words were sincere and serious.
Sun Yutan didn’t know how to respond, but Chen Ting hugged her tightly. “Don’t be nervous, everything will be fine. Have a happy wedding,” she said warmly.
Not long after Chen Ting left, the door of the lounge was knocked again.
Sun Yutan forced herself to smile and said, “Come in.”
A small girl stumbled in, barely taller than a coffee table. Sun Yutan stood up to greet her, but was surprised to see Tang Guo following closely behind.
Tang Guo had cut her hair short and put on some light makeup, but her trademark smile and curved eyes remained. Sun Yutan smiled back at her and hugged her.
However, as they embraced, Sun Yutan sensed something unusual and took a step back to glance at Tang Guo’s slightly protruding belly. “Are you…?”
“Yes,” Tang Guo replied with a smile.
“Wow.” Sun Yutan gave a thumbs up. “Class monitor is impressive.”
“Am I not impressive?”
“You’re impressive too.” Sun Yutan bent down and picked up the little girl. “Right, Ouyang Qin? Your parents are really impressive.”
“Hey.” Tang Guo tried to take her. “Don’t get your wedding dress dirty.”
“It’s fine.” Sun Yutan held Ouyang Qin horizontally and took off her shoes. Ouyang Qin was still in the stage of learning to speak, so she mumbled for a while while grasping her tiny feet. When she was put on Sun Yutan’s lap, she forgot about her shoes and focused on pulling the white veil on Sun Yutan’s body.
“I saw Chen Rui just now,” Tang Guo said. “He smiles when he talks to anyone. He looks much more approachable than before.”
“As he should, otherwise people will think I forced the marriage.”
“Did you force it?”
…
Sun Yutan had waited until it was time to send out the invitations before calling Tang Guo to tell her about her and Chen Rui. Although she tried to act tough, she was still a little scared because of the lesson learned from the past.
Opting to skim over the unpleasant memories of the past, Sun Yutan talked about how the two of them had finally seen eye to eye in the past six months.
“Only half a year?” Tang Guo’s incredulous voice crackled through the phone. “And you’re already getting married?”
Having been with her own classmate Ouyang Hao for three years and dated for four before tying the knot, Tang Guo believed in taking a cautious approach to love, and felt compelled to share her sage advice with her friend.
After all, Tang Guo’s final impression of Chen Rui was colored by that fateful afternoon when he had thrown away her love letter, forever tarnishing the once-rosy view she had held of him.
“Be careful, Xiao Tan,” Tang Guo warned. “Don’t rush into marriage and don’t try to trap him. While Chen Rui may appear flawless on the surface, there may be hidden flaws lurking beneath.”
“Such as…”
“Such as… ah, getting married is about sharing your life with someone, and it’s not exactly thrilling to wake up every day to a cold face”
Chen Rui, who had been reading a book, suddenly threw it down and glared at Sun Yutan’s phone with a hostile expression. He really did have a cold face.
Tang Guo continued, “You should think about it some more, Xiao Tan.”
“I can’t think about it anymore,” Sun Yutan said, “I’ve already sent out the invitations. It’s too late to turn back now.”
“Who is this now?” Chen Rui was very unhappy after the call ended.
“She sent you a love letter before.”
Chen Rui’s gaze narrowed as he scrutinized her for a moment before abruptly standing up to leave. But before he could take another step, Sun Yutan grabbed his arm. “Speaking of the love letter…”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“You clearly read it before.” Sun Yutan wouldn’t let it go, but Chen Rui refused to admit it. No matter how she asked, he just kept saying, “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” which made Sun Yutan very angry.
…
“I forced him to marry me,” Sun Yutan plainly admitted. Anyway, if she denied, Tang Guo wouldn’t believe it. “I did everything in my power to make him agree. I couldn’t risk losing this chance.”
Tang Guo felt a bit sympathetic towards her, so she changed her tone. “But from what I’ve seen, Chen Rui appeared to be quite content with the arrangement.”
Unable to contain her curiosity any longer, Sun Yutan pressed on. “Tang Guo, did you give Chen Rui the love letter you had written for him?”
“Yes, I did,” Tang Guo confirmed.
“And did he accept it?” Sun Yutang probed further.
“He did. And then he threw it away right away.”
“Did he read it?”
Tang Guo furrowed her brow, taking a moment to recall the details. “I think he did, but I can’t say for certain. All I know is that he tossed it aside without a care in the world. He can be so aggravating at times.”
Sun Yutan couldn’t figure out what was going on and felt a bit regretful.
Despite Chen Rui’s efforts to streamline the process, the day had been a whirlwind of activity, filled with endless cheers, screams, and showers of flowers. They had been congratulated by countless well-wishers, who had praised their match and expressed their joy at seeing them together.
As the final feast came to an end, Sun Yutan felt as though her face was about to freeze from all the smiling. She and Chen Rui stood side by side, watching as the long, dragon-like procession of cars departed into the distance.
A strange feeling filled Sun Yutan’s heart as she gazed out at the scenery. Suddenly, she realized why Chen Rui had chosen this particular location.
“Is it because this is where we first met?” she asked, turning to face Chen Rui.
Chen Rui simply nodded and took her hand in his.
She deliberately said, “But our first meeting wasn’t that pleasant, was it?”
“It’ll be different from now on,” Chen Rui looked at her, “From this day forward, this place will be nothing but a fond memory of our wedding day.”
Unable to contain herself any longer, Sun Yutan threw her arms around Chen Rui, embracing him tightly. But he held her back, his arms wrapped firmly around her waist, and cleared his throat, saying, “Student Sun.”
“Hmm?”
“I am Chen Rui from the class above you. I gathered the courage to write this letter because I wanted to get to know you better. Sun Yutan, I don’t know since when, but you have become the controller of my weather. Only when I see you does my world become sunny.”
Chen Rui paused for a moment, his teeth beginning to ache from the effort of reciting such flowery language. But Sun Yutan didn’t seem to mind. Instead, she urged him to continue, her eyes sparkling with amusement.
“Continue reciting,” she said, suppressing her laughter. She was curious to see if he could keep it up.
“As if you didn’t write some nonsense yourself.” Chen Rui couldn’t continue anymore.
“Then give it back to me.”
“Is it yours? You didn’t sign it.”
“Yeah, strange. How did you know?”
“If you bring me a new letter, I may tell you when I’m in a good mood.”
“Fine, keep it then. Don’t tell me anymore. After all, my name isn’t on it. Okay, Chen Rui, I’ll remember this. You kept a love letter from another girl.”
“…”
