Ling Rui wasn’t the best at trading insults, but in the army, it wasn’t his job to hurl words anyway.
Murong Xu, with a darkened expression, stopped the insults and charged straight into the enemy.
The battlefield erupted into chaos.
Ling Rui gripped his spear tightly, and in this critical moment, he didn’t falter.
Blood stained his handsome face, and his hands trembled from the strain. He had already killed several enemies.
On the battlefield, swords showed no mercy. Even Murong Xu couldn’t guarantee he’d emerge unscathed, but for some reason, Ling Rui remained untouched.
Every sword aimed at him seemed to veer off at the last second.
After a few such instances, Ling Rui, sitting on his horse, noticed the pattern.
“Uncle, stay closer to me!”
Ling Rui could feel this strange “luck” of his and wanted to use it to protect his uncle.
Time passed without them noticing.
Eventually, the fighting paused, and the enemy retreated several miles away.
Murong Xu led his men to clean up the battlefield, while Ling Rui followed, watching as his uncle captured any surviving enemies.
The prisoners were held in an area about a mile away from their own camp.
“Uncle, why are we keeping them here?”
Ling Rui didn’t understand the reasoning behind their placement.
Murong Xu turned back to look at him and explained, “These men might be infected with disease. If we bring them into our camp, our own soldiers could get sick.”
“Then why not kill them?”
“I need to question them first.”
Murong Xu wanted information on the enemy’s situation.
As for how the interrogation went, Ling Rui didn’t see it firsthand.
Murong Xu had him wait outside.
Time seemed to fly by when the uncle and nephew were together.
Although Murong Xu didn’t manage to extract much useful information, Ling Rui ended up being extremely helpful.
“Little Seven, is this new medicine from Guan Shan Residence?”
“Yes.”
Ling Rui had seen the conditions in the Qi Dynasty’s army, so he brought the medicine he’d brought along and the formulas for making more. “I contacted Uncle Lian Qing and got these from him.”
Hearing Lian Qing’s name, Murong Xu felt a wave of relief.
He had lived at Guan Shan Residence before, so he knew who its true master was.
Anything from Lian Qing was guaranteed to be effective.
“Where’s your Uncle Lian Qing now?”
“He’s waiting for Big Boss. I wrote to Big Boss, asking him to meet up with Uncle Lian Qing.”
“Good. When I see him next time, I’ll thank him personally.”
The medicine and formulas Ling Rui provided were immediately put to use in the army.
The enemy, known for their dirty tactics, finally suffered a setback after Ling Rui’s arrival.
“Little Seven.”
The exhausting life in the army left Murong Xu and Ling Rui with little time to rest. Murong Xu patted his nephew’s shoulder, his tone laced with affection and a hint of concern. “You’ve worked hard these past days.”
“Uncle, I’m not tired.”
Ling Rui smiled, his face lighting up with a small dimple. His bright eyes and youthful energy filled his voice as he said, “You and Eldest Auntie are the ones who’ve had it tough.”
Ling Rui had only come to help out for a short while, but his uncle and aunt had been fighting the enemy for much longer.
Compared to the soldiers stationed here year-round, Ling Rui didn’t think he could truly claim to be tired.
Murong Xu listened to his words and gently ruffled his nephew’s hair.
“My Little Seven is growing more sensible by the day.”
The two didn’t have much time to chat, as someone soon came to summon Murong Xu away.
This time, Qi Kingdom had allied with a few small countries to cause frequent disturbances along the Qi Dynasty’s borders.
Someone among them was using underhanded tricks that were truly despicable.
Murong Xu had brought Ling Rui along knowing that his nephew had learned many things at Guan Shan Residence, and there was a chance he’d know how to counter these tricks.
Whether it was the enemy’s poisons or their unfamiliar traps, Ling Rui was the right person for the job.
Murong Xu had made the right call, as Ling Rui was indeed able to handle them.
Ling Rui became so busy here that he naturally had no time to meet with Ah Wu.
Late at night, when everything was quiet, Ling Rui laid in his tent, staring up at the sky. He hugged his blanket, unable to fall asleep.
“I wonder what Ah Wu is doing,” Ling Rui muttered, saying Ah Wu’s name softly. He was still pursuing Ah Wu, though he hadn’t caught up to him yet.
As he thought about Ah Wu, Ling Rui felt a mix of longing and anticipation. These emotions blended together until his eyelids grew heavy, and before he knew it, he drifted off to sleep.
He didn’t remember how he fell asleep, but he definitely remembered the dream he had.
In his dream, he blindfolded Ah Wu.
Then, with great care and silence, he leaned in and kissed Ah Wu’s lips.
Kissing, undressing.
It was a long dream, but since Ling Rui lacked material for such dreams, the latter half became a bit monotonous.
When Ling Rui woke up, he stared blankly at the top of the tent, unable to process anything for a while.
“Your Highness, are you awake?”
A voice called from outside the tent. Ling Rui usually woke up early, but today he had slept in.
Sitting up, his face still slightly flushed, his normally clear voice now carried a hoarseness to it. “I’m awake. Wait a moment.”
After speaking, he stopped thinking about his dream. He shook his head vigorously to calm himself, got out of bed, and changed both his clothes and blankets himself, not wanting to trouble anyone.
Once ready, he stepped outside.
“Your Highness, the general is looking for you,” the person waiting outside informed him.
Ling Rui nodded and went to find Murong Xu.
Murong Xu looked somewhat exhausted, as though he hadn’t slept all night.
“Little Seven, you’re here.”
Murong Xu waved him over, calling him closer.
Ling Rui quickly walked up and immediately noticed a young girl, around seven or eight years old, lying on a small bed beside Murong Xu.
The girl’s features were deep-set, and her facial structure was somewhat different from the people of Qi Dynasty.
“Uncle, where did she come from?”
“I found her last night.”
Murong Xu explained, “She had a fever, and the army doctor treated it. She woke up once but hasn’t spoken since, like a little mute.”
Ling Rui examined her closely.
The girl was quite pretty, with long, fluttering eyelashes, and it seemed like she was pretending to sleep.
Ling Rui glanced at his uncle, and they exchanged a look.
Ling Rui instantly understood that his uncle wanted him to handle the girl.
Murong Xu shrugged helplessly.
Earlier, when the girl had woken up, Murong Xu had tried to communicate with her but failed.
She didn’t look like someone from Qi Kingdom, and her exotic features made it hard for Murong Xu to determine where exactly she was from.
“Uncle, go ahead and take care of what you need to. I’ll watch over her here.”
“Alright, you stay here. I’ll be off.”
Murong Xu left, taking the other soldiers in the tent with him.
Once they were alone, Ling Rui reached out and gently touched the girl’s arm.
“They’re gone. You don’t need to pretend to sleep anymore.”
Ling Rui softened his voice as he spoke to the girl, whose eyelashes continued to tremble. “I’m not a bad person. You don’t have to be scared.”
The girl had only recently been found. Her hair was a tangled mess, and though the dirt on her face had been wiped clean, her complexion still looked poor.
She had clearly been through a lot.
Ling Rui spoke softly, calling to her several times before she finally opened her eyes a sliver.
Thinking she was hidden, she wasn’t at all discreet in revealing her gaze.
In her line of sight was a young boy so beautiful he didn’t seem real, standing by her bed.
“Immortal Brother,” she murmured, fully opening her eyes.
Her quiet voice reached Ling Rui’s ears, making him smile.
“I’m not an immortal. My name is Ling Rui.”
Ling Rui bent down to look at the girl, his tone full of concern. “Do you feel any better now?”
The girl stared at him without blinking, then nodded obediently.
In front of Murong Xu, she had been as silent as a little mute, but now, with Ling Rui, she spoke softly.
Ling Rui brought her some sweet water and began gently probing her for information.
As she drank the sweet water, the girl spoke slowly and somewhat evasively.
She only mentioned that she was looking for her brother.
Her father had taken her brother away, and she missed him, so she had followed them in secret.
As for where her home was and the specifics about her family, she only said, “I live in the forest. I don’t have a mother, and my grandma takes care of me.”
She came from a forest-dwelling tribe.
Ling Rui’s mind raced as he tried to figure out which tribe she might belong to.
“Little Butterfly,” Ling Rui called the girl by her name. “Shall I take you home?”
“No,” Little Butterfly blinked and said, “I want to find my brother.”
“What’s your brother’s name? Do you have any clues about him? If you do, I can help you find him.”
At Ling Rui’s words, Little Butterfly hesitated.
“My brother… left.”
She replied with little useful information. “He came this way.”
“And? What does your brother look like? How can we find him?”
“My brother is handsome,” Little Butterfly said slowly, under Ling Rui’s gentle guidance. “He has a bad temper, but he’s not mean to me.”
Ling Rui: “…”
Ling Rui waited for a long time but didn’t hear any further information. He couldn’t hold back and asked, “Is that all?”
How old was her brother? What did he look like? Was he round-faced or square-faced?
Little Butterfly hadn’t mentioned any of that.
After questioning her for a while, Ling Rui finally gave up.
He had someone come in to take care of Little Butterfly while he left the tent to report the situation to his uncle.
His uncle wasn’t there; he had gone out to patrol.
Ling Rui didn’t feel like waiting, so he decided to ride his pony and go find his uncle.
His pony was named Gale. Although it didn’t run as fast as Ah Wu, Ling Rui still enjoyed riding it.
Riding on Gale, Ling Rui swept across the plains like a gust of wind.
In the chilly breeze, before he found his uncle, Ling Rui had already lost his way.
