Everyone Is Non-Human Except Me [Rebirth] Chapter 103

Rebirth from Death

A notebook?

Wei Huan was about to put the fountain pen down, but after taking two steps, he came back and stuffed it into his pocket, then hurried to the garden.

The Nine Phoenix residence had two gardens: the smaller one was a sky garden outside his bedroom, and the larger one was beyond the living room. He saw Yun Yongzhou half-squatting beneath a jacaranda tree, and walked over.

“How’d you find this place?” he asked.

Yun Yongzhou looked up—one of his eyes golden.

“I just removed the seal from the storage room. There was a cabinet inside—completely empty.” He pointed toward the open storage room. “But there was demon energy leaking out. A blue thread of it trailed outward—right to this tree.”

There were countless shrubs and flowering trees in the garden. Without being able to see that energy thread, no one would’ve thought to dig under the roots.

Yun Yongzhou said, “Only someone of the Nine Phoenix bloodline could probably find this.”

“And that’s why I say you married into our family,” Wei Huan grinned, squatting down and rolling up his sleeves. “Let me see what little secret came out of the closet.” But as he lowered his head, he saw that Yun Yongzhou had already dug out a huge pit, dirt flung all around in a chaotic mess.

“Did you blow it open?” Wei Huan turned to look at him.

Yun Yongzhou said nothing—just blinked calmly.

“Aren’t you worried about blowing up the treasure my old man left behind?” Wei Huan muttered as he picked up the notebook from the pit. A layer of blue demonic light coated its surface.

“I wouldn’t blow you up,” Yun Yongzhou said suddenly, out of nowhere.

“What?” Wei Huan blinked, confused.

Then it hit him—Yun Yongzhou meant he was the treasure left behind by his “father-in-law.”

“Where’d you learn to say stuff like that?” Wei Huan laughed, turning his face away as he tried to open the notebook. But the seal on this one wasn’t an ordinary Nine Phoenix seal. He couldn’t even open it. “What the h*ll?”

Yun Yongzhou, off to the side, calmly said, “That’s why I called you.”

So basically, if he could’ve opened it himself, he wouldn’t have called him. This cheeky golden crow…

Wei Huan examined the notebook. It looked ordinary—black leather-bound, nothing fancy. But there was a fingerprint on the edge of the pages—dark brown in color.

“Could it be my father’s blood seal?” he murmured. If it was, it could only be opened with blood.

Without hesitation, his wristband transformed into a sharp dagger. In a swift motion, he pricked his fingertip, letting a drop of blood fall onto the edge—right onto the dried print. The fresh blood merged into the page. Yun Yongzhou silently pulled out a band-aid from somewhere and wrapped it around Wei Huan’s finger without a word.

Wei Huan tried again—and the notebook opened.

But the surge of demon power was immense. A rich, overwhelming blue energy burst from the pages, lifting the hair at Wei Huan’s forehead.

Probably because his own demonic power was still unstable, the blast from his father’s power left three claw-like demonic marks on his face—and his left eye turned blue.

He felt like every bone and limb of his body was immersed in a familiar energy—like being held in his father’s arms as a child.

But when he looked down, the notebook itself was… completely empty. Page after page of pure white. “What the h*ll?” He shook the notebook upside down—and out fluttered a blue paper butterfly.

He and Yun Yongzhou stood up at the same time. Yun Yongzhou raised his hand, summoning a net of light that trapped the butterfly. It fluttered and struggled inside, until Wei Huan reached in and pinched its wings. The light net disappeared in an instant.

“Let’s see where you think you’re going.” Wei Huan examined it closely and saw tiny writing on the wings:

“Year 10 of Xingzhen, March 30, 3:30 a.m.”

He didn’t think much of it and read the line out loud. It was Yun Yongzhou who reacted first: “Isn’t that your birthday?”

“Huh? It is.” Wei Huan frowned. “Why my birthday? That’s so weird. Sounds like something a demon witch would pull.”

The thought made sense to him, so he reached out mentally to contact Boss Jue—to see if she knew anything.

Surprisingly, she picked up right away: “Wow, what a coincidence. I was just about to contact you.”

“You were?” Wei Huan was puzzled—but quickly recalled the petal of Shahua she had taken from his chest earlier. He got excited. “Did you manage to unlock the otherworld petal?”

“Smart as ever. Can’t hide anything from you.” Boss Jue said. “The sealing technique on that petal was ridiculously complex. I spent the whole night on it—but I actually did unlock it. But… the contents are a bit strange. I’m not sure what they have to do with you.”

That made Wei Huan even more curious.

“Tell me what it says first.”

“It’s a record. Remember last time you visited my shop? I made a record, right? All witches do that. At first, I thought it was a record of that half-demon kid Shahua mentioned… but turns out, it wasn’t.”

Her voice lowered to a gossipy whisper: “It was your famous Shanhai Principal.”

Wei Huan and Yun Yongzhou exchanged a look—confusion mixed with surprise.

Baize… had also gone to Wuqi?

“What did he trade?” Wei Huan quickly asked.

“Now this is where it gets weird,” said Boss Jue. “That man—usually such a revered, upright figure—traded in his descendants. No wonder he never had kids all these years—he basically ensured the end of his own bloodline.”

“He traded for an ability—to absorb demon energy. It’s a common enough ability, lots of demons have it. The only difference is the range and intensity. But his version was very strange—it could only be used once in a lifetime, and it had to target a specific type of demon power.”

Wei Huan frowned. “Does it say what kind of power he wanted to absorb?”

“Nope. Doesn’t say. My guess? He could choose—but only one time. Once it’s used, that’s it.”

Yun Yongzhou fell into thought. This only deepened a suspicion he had long held.

“This…”

“By the way, why did you contact me?” Boss Jue asked.

Wei Huan finally remembered the main reason, “Almost forgot. I just dug up a flying paper butterfly at home—with my birthday written on it. Down to the minute. Have you seen anything like that before?”

Boss Jue replied with a question of her own, “Isn’t that a divination charm? So you had a fate-reading done too, huh?”

“Really? So that’s one of the services you offer?”

Boss Jue denied it, “No. Normally, divination requires powerful demon spirits to perform. Witches like us can’t do it. Only certain spirit demons—those close to divine level or with knowledge of all things under heaven—can do proper fate-divinations. It used to be very popular among demon clans, but like I said, only a small number of demons could divine others’ fate. Those demons are getting rarer, so divination’s fallen out of fashion. Maybe someone did a divination for you when you were born.”

“So that’s how it is…” Wei Huan seemed to recall something. “Oh! I remember now—back in middle school, my deskmate showed me a red origami crane he got when he was born. His birthday was written on it too. He told me it must never be opened while he’s still alive—said that if the person it’s about opens it themselves, the whole clan would suffer.
So he just showed it to me but never unfolded it.”

“Exactly. The person whose fate was divined must never open their own charm while alive. A close family member can look once.”

While alive…

“Wait! I died once!”

Boss Jue gave a long “Mmm, well, yeah… you kinda did.”

Wei Huan suddenly turned to Yun Yongzhou, excitedly pointing at his own nose, “That means I can open it now!”

Yun Yongzhou helplessly held his finger, “Is dying once really something to celebrate?” Then he added, “Your father sealed it here so clearly he didn’t want anyone to know about it. Are you sure you want to open it?”

“Yes!” Wei Huan wouldn’t hear any objections—he was determined to see what the divination said. “I’m not technically ‘alive’ anymore. This is a second chance granted by heaven—so I can open it myself.” He looked up at the sky dramatically, then turned his gaze to Yun Yongzhou and hugged his arm with a grin, “No—actually, it’s thanks to you, Lord Golden Crow. Thank you, Your Excellency!”

“You should be thanking me!” Boss Jue added. “Anyway, I gotta go—got customers.”

“Thank you! Wishing your business lots of success and may you have so much money you can keep a whole basket of handsome young men!”

“That’s the kind of sweet talk I like,” she quipped. “Such a cute little mouth.” And with that, she hung up.

“You’ve completely forgotten why we came here,” Yun Yongzhou muttered, but in the end, he let Wei Huan open the butterfly.

After Wei Huan unfolded the struggling butterfly, it let out a soft poof and dissolved into white mist—eventually forming into a slip of paper in his hand.

Handwritten characters slowly emerged: [Phoenix rebirth—life through death.]

Wei Huan didn’t quite understand. He flipped the paper over—and to his surprise, more words appeared:

[Only by falling into h*ll and splitting body from soul can one inherit the power of the Phoenix.]

His hand clenched the paper subconsciously, his eyes flickering with confusion, brows furrowed.

What the h*ll is this?

“No way this is real,” he laughed, full of disbelief. “What kind of fate reading is this? I’m clearly a Nine Phoenix—just a demon. The Phoenix is practically divine! How could I possibly have Phoenix power?”

Yun Yongzhou understood how Wei Huan felt. In the demon realm, the Phoenix was like a god. The first Principal of Shanhai, once the most respected leader among demons, had sacrificed everything to maintain peace across the realm. Even the floating city of Kunlun Void was sustained for a thousand years by nothing but the Phoenix’s soul. All the spiritual power in Kunlun Void ultimately came from that Phoenix.

As a Golden Crow, Yun Yongzhou had heard many tales about the original Phoenix and Golden Crow. They were both fire-aligned, close to divinity—once old friends, but due to various reasons, ended up more like eternal rivals. The Phoenix gave up the chance to reincarnate, using its soul to support the demon capital.

But when its soul finally faded, it was that very rival—the Golden Crow—who sacrificed himself to summon it back.

Yet the Phoenix never returned.

It all felt like destiny, intricately woven.

“Do you know why I chose to sacrifice my Xihe Eye back then?” Yun Yongzhou asked suddenly.

Wei Huan looked up, still clutching the paper slip.

“It wasn’t just because it was the most precious thing I had.” Yun Yongzhou met his gaze. “It was also because—according to legend—the original Golden Crow sacrificed his Xihe Eye to summon the Phoenix.”

Wei Huan felt chills run down his spine.

“But he failed…” he murmured. “The Xi He Eye couldn’t bring the Phoenix back. Instead, it seemed to reincarnate into you… and then you used it… to bring me back…”

The first Phoenix and Golden Crow. Yun Yongzhou and him.

They were clearly separate beings, and yet their fates had circled back into a loop—completing some long-ordained mission.

Wei Huan clutched his hand tighter. He still couldn’t believe he held Phoenix power.

“Think about it. How many kids in the demon realm grew up hearing Phoenix legends? The Phoenix’s power is nearly divine—it could uphold all of Kunlun Void and nourish countless great demons’ souls.”

Yun Yongzhou understood. He understood, and—finally—he found the last piece of the puzzle.

It was delicate, but unmistakable. If Wei Huan had never died seven years ago, this divination would never have been opened. If he hadn’t died, he would never have been able to inherit the Phoenix’s power. He would’ve just stayed an ordinary, free-spirited demon for life.

Turns out, everything had been a carefully laid plan.

“He knew that only death could awaken the Phoenix’s power hidden in you,” Yun Yongzhou said calmly. “So he decided your fate a long time ago.”

And at last, Wei Huan understood.

Even though he was born into a powerful demon clan, in the grand scheme of political manipulation, he was just a pawn. That’s why he had been singled out. That’s why they had to kill him. That’s why they framed him as a traitor.

Because if he ever discovered the truth of the divination—if he ever gained the Phoenix’s power—then he would be strong enough to rally all of Shanhai, even the entire demon realm. They could then strip that power from him in the name of “justice” and claim it for themselves.

A rebel would never have allies. Never have a faction. He would always be alone.

The mastermind’s meticulousness sent chills down Wei Huan’s spine.

“I’m completely certain now.” Wei Huan gripped the paper talisman tightly and looked at Yun Yongzhou.

“Just like Boss Jue said, there are very few demons left who possess the art of divination. On top of that, this one knew my parents, held an important position in Shanhai, understood the abilities and traits of demons across the land, and was known far and wide as a spirit demon capable of absorbing others’ demonic power. Put all those conditions together, and there’s only one answer.”

Yun Yongzhou nodded. “Baize.”

He had long suspected the Principal of Shanhai, but the man was simply too careful. The only slip was when he chose a side during the election. Besides, everyone knew of Baize’s close ties with Nine Phoenix. Back when Wei Huan defected and was denounced by the entire demon realm, Baize never officially expelled him from Shanhai. That kind of action wouldn’t raise suspicion—in fact, it looked like leniency.

Yun Yongzhou even suspected that his own journey to Wuqi had been subtly guided by Baize’s hand.

“It really was him.” Wei Huan let out a cold laugh and clutched the folded Dan horn on his chest. It had been a gift from Bai Xiucheng years ago—a wish that he could live like the wind, free and unbound.

But it was also him, watching as Wei Huan stepped into a death trap, as Yun Yongzhou sacrificed himself for the soul-summoning ritual, as Wei Huan was reborn, returned to Shanhai, slowly regained his power, and drew ever closer to the Phoenix’s strength. He was like a puppet, walking step by step toward a preordained destination under Bai Xiucheng’s manipulation, playing out an exquisitely crafted chain of schemes.

In the end, he would offer up his innate gift to fulfill the mission secretly marked upon his birth.

“He actually had plenty of chances to act—really. He watched me grow up, taught me to read and write, discussed the world with me.” Wei Huan bowed his head, clutching the talisman tightly. “He could’ve killed me from the moment I was born. Why wait all these years?”

Yun Yongzhou spoke mildly, “You have to understand—people change.”

“The saddest part isn’t that he used you. It’s that, once, he truly did see you as his own child.”

A gust of wind swept past, and the ground was littered with fallen jacaranda petals.

Wei Huan steadied his emotions and smiled. “I finally understand. At last.”

Yun Yongzhou gently patted his head and lowered his gaze to message the others. “We need to let them know as soon as possible. Baize probably already suspects we’d discover this ahead of time—he’s too thorough not to have countermeasures. We have to play three steps ahead from now on.”

“Mm.” Suddenly, Wei Huan sensed a familiar demonic energy. It wasn’t his father’s or mother’s—it was his own. His left eye turned an even deeper blue, guided by demonic force. He raised his hand, his fingertips glowing with blue light. The stirrings in his chest became almost unbearable; he found it hard to breathe, and his eyes grew unfocused—but strange, unfamiliar visions appeared before him.

Something unseen was pulling him forward.

At that moment, everyone else began to arrive. Yun Yongzhou opened the barrier to let them in. One by one, the Group assembled—even Qing He had come.

“Did you inform Su Buyu?” Yun Yongzhou asked Yang Sheng.

“I can’t reach him,” Yang Sheng replied.

Yun Yongzhou had his doubts, but he’d already done everything he could. As he watched everyone settle into place, ready to share what he and Wei Huan had discovered—he turned around and found that Wei Huan was gone. All that remained behind him was a shrinking, vanishing blue barrier circle, flickering out like extinguished fireworks.

He furrowed his brow and tried to expand the barrier—but it was too late.

Yang Sheng saw the barrier vanish and instinctively felt something was wrong. “Where is he going?”

Yun Yongzhou shook his head and attempted a telepathic link—and was surprised by the response.

“To the Nine Phoenix Ancestral Tomb.”
