Wei Huan didn’t know how to respond.
Things weren’t supposed to turn out this way.
Suddenly, a massive tremor shook the ground. The floating marble hemisphere fountain at the center of the plaza collapsed. Clear water gushed out across the pavement. The earthquake was intense—buildings trembled violently, and the screen on the building in front of the plaza, which had been playing ads, suddenly went black and silent.
Yang Sheng stopped channeling energy, the purple hurricane dissipating in his palm. Yang Ling also ceased attacking. The blazing lotus flowers in the sky turned with her, now floating like red lanterns across the heavens.
Behind Yan Shanyue, her huge snow-white fox tails dropped low and touched the ground. She looked up at the sky, behind her a field of demon bee puppets still controlled by cold blue foxfire.
“What’s going on?” From the air, Yang Ling could see beyond the plaza—it looked like the quake was happening there too.
Amid the chaos, they heard a sharp, crisp cracking sound.
“What’s that noise?” Wei Huan looked around, trying to locate the source. At first, he thought it was the ground. But suddenly, a thought struck him.
Standing in the plaza was a twenty-meter-tall, several-meter-wide monument of white jade: the Huaijin Stele. Behind it was a semi-circular garden. Due to the barrier previously deployed by the Shanhai Combat Forces, many ordinary civilians—injured or unable to move—were hiding there waiting for rescue.
“No—” Wei Huan saw the shaking stele, the golden bracelet on his wrist beginning to glow automatically. But before he could act, the pure white Huaijin Stele shattered with a loud crack, and massive jade fragments began to fall.
Screams erupted. “Help!”
Too late. D*mn it.
The jade was falling fast—
But suddenly, golden light erupted around the falling stones. Countless golden threads appeared, forming resilient light tethers that intercepted each falling shard midair, tightly binding them.
Two children hiding in the garden bushes stared dumbfounded at the enormous piece of jade suspended above their heads, watching as it was surrounded by golden light and slowly lifted.
“Look! Look! The stone is flying! It’s flying!”
“Golden light! So pretty!”
Amid their innocent cheers, the golden threads continued to lift the shattered jade pieces, one by one, until they rejoined and fused together. The entire monument was cocooned in golden light, each fracture sealed, restored into a whole. The base was anchored to the ground, and the falling top was slowly raised, returning to its original position.
Yun Yongzhou released his fingers, and the golden tethers dissipated at his fingertips.
Only then did Wei Huan exhale. Thank goodness he acted in time.
“There’s no demon energy detected underground,” Yan Shanyue said, lifting her fox tails.
Wei Huan scanned the surroundings. Even the Shanhai Combat Forces seemed surprised. “It probably wasn’t intentional sabotage.” With that, he rose into the air, hovering face to face with Su Buyu.
“Quickly evacuate the civilians…” Su Buyu issued an order softly into his communicator. When he saw Wei Huan appear before him, he looked up and fell silent.
“Buyu,” Wei Huan called out his name, but after that he didn’t know how to continue. His emotions were too tangled. He felt like he should lay out all of Baize’s crimes at once, explain his own reasons for hiding his identity.
There had been too much hesitation and neglect between them.
“I wasn’t honest enough. The reason I didn’t tell you after I came back was because I didn’t want to drag you into this. I didn’t want you to be put in danger, pulled into this web of conspiracy…”
Su Buyu gently interrupted, his tone calm.
“I’ve always been in it.”
He gave a light laugh, but his eyes were bitter.
“Ah Huan, when will you finally understand—I don’t need you to protect me.”
Wei Huan froze in place, his palms going cold.
The tremors in the city still hadn’t stopped. Three consecutive air-raid sirens blared from the sky, followed by the broadcaster’s voice: “All citizens, a sudden earthquake has struck Kunlun Void. The cause is under investigation. Please proceed to open areas for temporary shelter. Citizens capable of flight, avoid crowding the skies, and do not block aerial rescue routes.”
“You have no idea what Baize has done.” Wei Huan’s thoughts were a mess, but he tried to sort them out. “I know you and the combat forces think you’re on the side of justice—but you’ve all been used by Baize. He’s…”
“The mastermind.” Su Buyu slightly tilted his chin. The dull sky cast a pale light on his face, giving him a fragile, translucent quality. “I know it all.”
Trembling ground, grey sky, refugees struggling to survive in the chaos and violence.
Su Buyu’s voice was calm and clean, but out of place.
“I am his accomplice.”
Suddenly, a loud cracking sound erupted. The ground split open, a fissure extending toward them from the center of the square, cutting directly between Wei Huan and Su Buyu, separating the two.
His lips curled faintly. “This was my choice.”
With that, he turned around and raised his right arm. The frozen Xie Tianfa, still hovering beside him, drifted away under Su Buyu’s control. With his back to Wei Huan, the grayish-green mermaid bead at his chest flew skyward, emitting a soft cyan glow.
The tremors on the ground seemed to subside.
Qing He, helping with evacuation, turned his head and saw this scene. His heart skipped a beat—twice—and for a moment, he couldn’t speak.
“You can’t take him.” The moment Wei Huan spoke, a whole array of blue wind blades appeared around Su Buyu, surrounding him.
He hadn’t wanted things to come to blows—but now, there was no choice.
Su Buyu didn’t respond. The mermaid bead continued glowing, water sounds echoing—the sign that absorption was about to begin.
“Su Buyu! Give him back to me!” Qing He ran toward him, but Su Buyu didn’t even look back. He merely extended his fingers at his side, and sharp icicles rose behind him, blocking Qing He’s path.
The wind blades shrank tighter.
“Let him go.”
The next second, just as the mermaid bead opened fully, crimson Golden Crow fire shot through the cracks between the blue wind blades, heading straight for Su Buyu.
His eyes turned sharp. Ice walls rose around him, and fire and frost clashed, emitting bursts of extreme demon light.
In an instant, the flames turned into a glowing blade that sliced through the ice. Yun Yongzhou had appeared in front of Su Buyu at some point, reaching out to grab the mermaid bead on Su Buyu’s chest. His fingers were only an inch away when Su Buyu reacted—icicles shot down from above toward Yun Yongzhou’s hand. He raised his eyes, golden light blade flashing, and—clang—the icicles shattered.
Under Su Buyu’s control, the mermaid bead returned. Yun Yongzhou reached forward, but Su Buyu grabbed him with a backhand grip.
“Don’t even think about it.”
The moment his five fingers clenched, Yun Yongzhou’s arm was frozen in ice, and the mermaid bead returned to Su Buyu’s chest.
Yun Yongzhou looked up, a trace of disdain in his eyes.
“I return those words to you.”
He clenched his fist. Flames erupted instantly from his arm. The ice shattered in the heat, cold shards scattering. He struck outward, and a wave of heat blasted from his side, knocking the frozen Xie Tianfa aside.
“Tianfa!” Qing He rushed over.
“I’ve got him.” Wei Huan quickly flew up and caught Xie Tianfa, immediately opening a wide defensive barrier. Looking up at the sky, he saw Yun Yongzhou and Su Buyu officially locked in combat. Their moves were lightning-fast. He rarely saw the two of them fight—in school, Su Buyu had always been a support-class spatial user, and rarely matched up directly against main combatants like Yun Yongzhou.
But now he realized he had underestimated Buyu. Against the famously powerful Yun Yongzhou, he wasn’t at a disadvantage at all.
Yun Yongzhou lifted his right leg in a sweeping kick, wrapped in fire. Su Buyu leaned back to dodge and countered with a palm strike to his left shoulder. Ice spread in an instant—but was quickly melted by flames. Ice and fire clashed, evenly matched.
Flames surrounded Su Buyu, nearly sealing him in. Yun Yongzhou spoke coldly, as though he were the one controlling ice.
“I know it’s in your hands.” With his flaming hand, he once again reached for the mermaid bead. “Hand it over.”
As he finished, he felt a chill around his neck. Thin, long icicles wrapped around his throat, their tips nearly piercing his skin.
“You think I’ll listen to you?”
If it were the past, Yun Yongzhou might’ve struck without hesitation—but he knew this wasn’t how it should end. “Work together.”
“Work together?” Su Buyu gave a faint smile, looking into his eyes. “Have we ever worked together before?”
Yun Yongzhou’s expression shifted.
Because he saw that Su Buyu’s pupils had turned a vivid red. The scent of red spider lilies surrounded him. The world twisted. Everything began to warp.
Elsewhere, the others were gathered in front of the frozen Xie Tianfa. Wei Huan issued instructions: “I’m going to melt the ice. He could wake at any moment.” He looked at Qing He. “Qing He, stand in front of him. By instinct, he won’t hurt you—and you won’t trigger him either.” Then he turned to the Nine-Tails. “Shanyue, hold him with foxfire. Yang Ling, set up the Fire Lotus Array. Anyone who tries to attack—blow them up.”
“Ah Heng, what should I do?” Jing Yun asked urgently.
Wei Huan shook his head. “There might be another earthquake soon. You need to conserve your strength for rescue operations. The same goes for Yang Sheng.” Only after he spoke did Wei Huan look up—only to find that Yun Yongzhou and Su Buyu had both disappeared.
“Where are they?”
Two solitary petals of a bian flower floated down from the sky. Wei Huan frowned.
No—he couldn’t worry about that now.
He looked around and spotted the demon hunter and his son still clearing out demon puppets. Without hesitation, he flew toward them, catching up with the demon hunter.
“Mr. Li!”
The moment he called out, a silver sword was again pressed against his throat. Wei Huan raised both hands toward Li Lingkong. “I know you still carry hatred in your heart, but it seems you’ve noticed something too, haven’t you?” He stepped forward cautiously. “You just mentioned Song Chengkang’s name. He’s actually the one in charge of the demon puppet program—no,” Wei Huan corrected himself, shaking his head, “he’s also being used. The true mastermind behind it all is the principal of the Shanhai Academy. Based on the evidence I’ve gathered, he’s likely the one who led the Shanhai combat troops to exterminate the demon hunters in Fanzhou all those years ago.”
Li Lingkong’s eyes were sharp as an eagle’s. “Why should I believe you?”
“Because I’m a rootless soul with nowhere left to go,” Wei Huan said openly. “My family was destroyed, I was wrongfully killed. When I came back to life and learned all of this, I honestly wished I could die again.”
He stepped in closer. “The only reason I haven’t is because I can’t stand to see the truth buried. I refuse to be blinded by conspiracy. I need to know everything that happened. That’s why I can’t die. Even if I’m powerless, even if I have to live like a rat just to stay alive—I need to know how I became a pawn.”
“How pitiful my life has been isn’t important.” A fierce light burned in Wei Huan’s eyes, but the corners of his lips lifted with pride. “What matters is—I have to know who directed this entire show, so I can give them a proper round of applause before I die again.”
These words struck deep, each one landing heavily in Li Lingkong’s heart. The years of numbness from alcohol were suddenly set ablaze, igniting something inside him.
His blood, long congealed, began to boil. His weary heart began to beat.
Looking at the Nine Phoenix in human form before him, Li Lingkong unexpectedly felt a strange resonance.
He couldn’t let the sacrifice be in vain—and neither could Li Lingkong.
The silver sword retracted by three inches. Just as Li Lingkong was about to turn around, Wei Huan grabbed the blade.
“Mr. Li, there’s something I’d like to ask of you.”
Li Lingkong paused, saying nothing.
“My friend, like Mo Tong, has been made into a demon puppet. Please help him purify his spirit.”
Li Lingkong turned his head and saw the fully frozen demon puppet behind Wei Huan. “That one was made using your parents’ bodies.”
Wei Huan’s emotions surged, but he lowered his eyes and nodded. “But he’s innocent.”
Having just finished eliminating the nearby demon puppets, Mo Tong stepped up behind Li Lingkong. He didn’t speak, but something seemed to shift in Li Lingkong’s eyes. Wei Huan caught that subtle change—it gave him hope. Mo Tong stood slightly behind him, his green eyes fixed on Wei Huan.
“Father…”
His voice was still cold and stiff, but with a trace of hesitation. Li Lingkong cut him off.
“You’ve said quite a bit today.” His tone carried some reproach, but just as he finished, he strode toward Wei Huan.
“Let go of my sword.”
Wei Huan blinked and released it belatedly. “Sorry, sorry.” Mo Tong, clearly surprised, looked pleased—his green eyes stirred like ripples in a pond.
Seeing this turn of events, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. From above, Yang Ling called out, “Brother Huanhuan, should we move somewhere else?”
But Yan Shanyue spoke up first. “Better to end this quickly.”
“Mm.” Wei Huan stood before Xie Tianfa, looking at the face frozen in ice. He could almost sense the Nine Phoenix aura emanating from him. His heart wavered, but he took a deep breath and placed his palm against the biting cold ice.
“Just like I said—hold steady.” As he spoke, Golden Crow fire sprang from his palm, instantly spreading over the ice. Water began to pool at their feet, more and more of it. The iris-shaped demon mark on Yan Shanyue’s hand glowed, and blue foxfire shot from her fingertips, winding around Xie Tianfa’s body.
“Mr. Li.”
Li Lingkong walked behind Xie Tianfa and held out his hand to Mo Tong. Wei Huan thought he was asking for a magical artifact, but instead, Mo Tong took a wine flask from his waist and handed it over. Li Lingkong tilted his head back and took a deep gulp, then tossed the flask back.
“This might not work,” Li Lingkong said plainly. “And if it doesn’t—he might die.”
Wei Huan tensed and looked to Qing He, but to his surprise, Qing He had grown unexpectedly resolute. “That’s fine. As long as you’re willing to try. Whether it works or not, I’ll accept it.”
Wei Huan finally saw the light in Qing He’s eyes.
Li Lingkong gave a raspy grunt of acknowledgment and rose into the air. The spiritual energy hidden within the scent of wine burst out. Silver light blazed so brightly they couldn’t keep their eyes open.
Wei Huan realized this was no bluff. “Shanyue, step back! This kind of spiritual energy could harm you too.”
“No.” Yan Shanyue held her ground. “The closer I am, the stronger my control. If he goes berserk, all will be lost.”
Even though Wei Huan was in human form, the spiritual energy made his internal demon power surge violently. Conflicting demon auras roared inside him: the Golden Crow’s power he had tamed, the familiar power of the Nine Phoenix.
And…
Something unfamiliar. An undercurrent stirring deep within.
Something out of his control. Blue wind, like a vortex, began to swirl around him—its source, his chest. Wei Huan grasped the fractured demon heart at his chest. The Nine Phoenix power held the unrest at bay.
Li Lingkong placed both hands on either side of Xie Tianfa’s head. From his opposing palms, a dazzling silver light burst forth. The light was like a sword piercing through Xie Tianfa’s skull—and though unconscious, he let out a scream.
Qing He’s heart clenched.
The usually quiet Mo Tong actually spoke in a low voice: “It’s alright. I was like that too.”
It sounded like comfort, but Wei Huan only felt a deep sorrow. He gripped Qing He’s shoulder tightly. “He’ll be okay.”
They felt a tremor in Xie Tianfa’s body. The silver light piercing his skull gathered at the center of his forehead and then suddenly plunged downward. In the next moment, a screech like that of a bird exploded from within his body—so loud it seemed to tear through the heavens.
A sharp pain stabbed Wei Huan in the chest.
It was the cry of the Nine Phoenix demon soul.
His eyes suddenly stung. He lowered his head slightly, blinking quickly to hide the emotions surging up—but that scream was utterly heart-wrenching, tearing through his chest and lungs. In his blurred vision, the faces of his parents appeared—waving at him through a window during their last visit to his school, smiling warmly.
Yan Shanyue’s eyes were on Wei Huan. When she saw him lift his head as if nothing had happened, then quickly look away, her heart ached.
“Demon puppets only know how to kill indiscriminately—human or demon—because the demon souls inside them are filled only with resentment and murderous energy. Human souls are weaker than demon souls, so their own consciousness can’t survive. Only by purging the demon souls is there any chance of recovery,” Li Lingkong said with a sigh in his voice. “He’s carrying two powerful demon souls inside him. For him—and for them—it’s unbearable. Far more difficult than Mo Tong.”
When Qing He heard the term “demon souls,” he suddenly felt some reluctance. “Then is there any way to…”
“Purge them.” Wei Huan smiled and grasped Qing He’s shoulder, his voice light. “My parents’ souls should have vanished eight years ago. They wouldn’t want to be trapped here either.”
Li Lingkong, seeing him make this decision, felt something unusual toward this young demon he had long regarded as an enemy—whether it was sympathy or admiration, he couldn’t tell.
“These two demon souls are extremely strong. If we slip even a little, it’ll create trouble beyond my control. You all must hold firm—no mistakes.”
Wei Huan nodded, silently clenching his back teeth. Within Yang Ling’s lotus fire formation, he layered a Golden Crow barrier. Then, he watched as that spiritual energy penetrated Xie Tianfa from the crown of his head, flooding his entire body. The dying scream of the Nine Phoenix demon soul echoed through the sky. The emotional surge was too much—it felt like the spirit force was lightning striking directly into him.
Qing He stared at Xie Tianfa, not daring to let his focus slip for even a second.
Then suddenly—he saw Xie Tianfa’s lips move!
Afraid it was just a hallucination from nerves, he shut his eyes and opened them again quickly.
It was real. He was moving—and he seemed to be saying something.
Qing He stared hard, trying to read the faint motion of the lips. Finally, he understood what Xie Tianfa’s fragile soul was mouthing.
Two words—his name.
“He’s calling me,” Qing He’s shoulders trembled slightly. “He’s calling my name…”
Wei Huan’s brows relaxed. “That’s great…”
But just as light seemed to break through the clouds, a white beam suddenly pierced their barrier. Wei Huan instinctively raised his hand, forming a light shield to block it. When he looked up, he saw a shower of ice spears radiating toward them.
“Brother Huanhuan!” Yang Ling called out, but her eyes were fixed on Yun Yongzhou and Su Buyu, who had reappeared before them—still locked in fierce battle.
The situation was urgent. Wei Huan didn’t hesitate. “Mr. Li, quickly! I’ll hold them off.”
He unfurled his wings and soared into the sky, laying down another Nine Phoenix barrier.
Just then, he heard Yun Yongzhou’s voice: “Hand over his original form.”
Both of them were battered and bloodied, the scent of demon blood thick in the air. As their weapons clashed again, Yun Yongzhou’s light blade moved faster, flicking the mermaid bead from Su Buyu’s chest into the air. The two lunged upward, hands outstretched to seize it.
Wei Huan acted first. Channeling the power of the Nine Phoenix, he summoned a fierce wind—and the mermaid bead was swept into his palm.
The instant the mermaid bead landed in his hand, Wei Huan’s heart gave a violent double beat.
This time, it was different.
His heartbeat seemed to separate from his body, pounding uncontrollably.
The mermaid bead in his hand radiated an intense light. The moment that glow touched the broken core at his chest, Wei Huan’s whole body turned burning hot. That previously subtle force surged out fully at last.
“There’s something wrong with the dan horn…” Wei Huan spoke with difficulty. He felt like he was about to catch fire.
“The mermaid bead too…”
Suddenly, a towering blaze erupted from nowhere, swallowing the rest of his words—
And his entire body.
