Going on a mission with Yang Ling and Yan Shanyue had one big benefit—you could spectate from the sidelines. As a human, Wei Huan was essentially useless next to Yansui Academy’s #1 and #2 ranked students. The snake demon that had gone rogue less than five days ago was quickly subdued by Yang Ling and Yan Shanyue, then sealed inside the Nine-Tails’ Yuzhao Mirror.
“Your lotus fire has really strong attack power,” Yan Shanyue casually remarked as she hung the palm-sized mirror at her waist. Yang Ling’s face immediately turned bright red. “N-no it doesn’t…”
“She almost roasted that snake just now. I swear, like fifty lotus fire blasts in one go! Was she planning to take a grilled snake home to Teacher Xing?” Wei Huan hadn’t finished speaking when a giant lotus fireball nearly slapped him in the face. Startled, he quickly clapped his hands. “Grilled snake! Excellent choice! Tastes amazing—eating it once, you’ll never forget…”
Yang Ling huffed and turned her head away before finally extinguishing the fire. Wei Huan patted his chest and looked over—her blush hadn’t gone away. Yan Shanyue smiled slightly and reached out to pat Yang Ling’s head.
Just that one pat turned her red down to her neck.
Feeling reckless, Wei Huan leaned in on Yang Ling’s other side and whispered, “I suspect you two are dating on government time…”
“…but I have no proof.”
Right as Yang Ling raised her hand to unleash violence, Wei Huan smartly ducked away and grinned. “Heading back to school?”
Yang Ling crossed her arms. “I ordered a dress—I’m going to pick it up.” She immediately grabbed Yan Shanyue’s arm and whined sweetly, in stark contrast to how she treated Wei Huan, “Sister Shanyue, come with me~”
Yan Shanyue nodded with a soft smile. Wei Huan looked to the sky in defeat—he clearly had no say in the matter—and followed behind the two girls. “I feel like your token gay bestie. Tagalong, chatterbox, and designated shopping buddy.”
“Don’t flatter yourself.” Yang Ling turned back and made a face at him.
Still harboring hopes of getting the reverse soul fruit from Yan Shanyue, Wei Huan half-joked, “Sister Yan, if we run into another monster and I die on the spot, my body lying lifeless at your feet, surely your beautiful and kind self would use the reverse soul fruit to bring me back, right?”
Before Nine-Tails could respond, Yang Ling the Sister-Protecting Maniac interrupted: “I suspect you’re pulling a honey trap! Confess—did you collude with some monster to scam my Sister Shanyue’s reverse soul fruit?!”
Wei Huan’s mouth twitched. “Young miss, that’s not how ‘honey trap’ works…”
Just as Yang Ling was about to argue more, a wave of extremely aggressive demonic energy surged in, reeking of blood. All three of them sensed it at the same time and turned toward the source. At the street corner stood a brawny demon, swinging his thick, striped brown-and-yellow tail in the air. His face, full of fat and hostility, radiated killing intent as he approached. The regular demons nearby scrambled to hide, terrified of getting caught in the crossfire.
Wait a second—wasn’t that the tiger demon they’d encountered at the Shanhai Gate?
Wei Huan was shocked. D*mn his cursed mouth! Good things never came true, but bad omens were always spot on. Resisting the urge to slap himself, he instinctively stepped in front of the two girls.
Yan Shanyue glanced at the tiger demon, piecing things together. “Were you serious earlier?”
“I do want the reverse soul fruit—but I’m not trying to honey trap you.” While snarking, Wei Huan slung the assault rifle from his back and aimed it lightning-fast. But the next moment, a dozen massive demons emerged behind the tiger. They weren’t all from the same species, but each was full of murderous intent, charging straight at the trio.
The tiger demon roared, “You again?! Ruining my plans!”
So the snake demon was in cahoots with this tiger? No time to think—Wei Huan fired without mercy. Several charging wolf demons dropped instantly, blood flowing everywhere. This gun had been specially requested for him by Teacher Xing from the Shanhai Research Division. Its bullets were coated in a compound that severely damaged the coagulation abilities of most demons—perfect for both offense and defense for someone without any spiritual power.
“Yang Ling—fire array!”
Yang Ling flew into the air, holding her hands before her chest. A red lotus flame bloomed at her fingertips. She sketched a formation in the sky, and just as the mob charged, the fire lotus array trapped them in a burning field. “You trash demons—this lady’s going to wipe you all out.”
Way too violent. As Wei Huan reloaded, Yan Shanyue stepped in front of him. “We can’t kill them. That violates the rules.”
Her massive Nine-Tails expanded, shielding Wei Huan completely. With a wave of her hand, icy-blue foxfire turned into glowing chains that shot forward, binding the enemies hand and foot. The demons struggled with all their might but couldn’t escape her fire. Wei Huan noticed the Nine-Tails crest glowing on the back of her hand—an iris-shaped symbol with nine purple-blue petals, pulsing with immense energy.
“Yang Ling, help me unfasten the Yuzhao Mirror at my waist,” Yan Shanyue said as she continued channeling her foxfire to restrain the dozen demons.
Wei Huan, watching from behind, was hit with a deep wave of frustration. If this had been back in the day, he’d have mopped the floor with these thugs himself. Now all he could do was aim his gun at them, on edge in case any of them broke free.
When it came to missions, he had far more experience than Yang Ling or Yan Shanyue. Shanhai’s mission zones were usually close by, and each team always had at least one Fuyao student or a flight-capable demon to act as backup in emergencies. Back then, Wei Huan had been the team’s most reliable pinch hitter—whenever something went wrong, he was the one they sent in to fix it.
Wei Huan touched the small magnetic chip behind his ear. Everyone had queued up at the research division to get them installed earlier—these were communication triggers that matched the combat suits. Just pressing it once would connect their frequency and start transmission.
He tried pressing it. Nothing happened. He looked at his teammates. “Are your communicators on?”
Yan Shanyue replied, “When Teacher Xing handed out the combat suits, he already said the communicators weren’t fully installed yet. And we don’t really need them for our first field mission anyway.”
Fair enough. Wei Huan thought to himself, anything could happen out here—you never know when you’ll need backup.
“Then do either of you know signal techniques?” That was the last-resort backup method.
Neither Yang Ling nor Yan Shanyue answered. Wei Huan understood instantly—they hadn’t gotten to that part of training yet. “Just seal those monsters into the Yuzao Mirror first.”
Right then, Wei Huan caught a faint bloody scent. He looked down— a black lizard was scuttling quickly to the feet of the Nine-Tails.
Another one?!
Why were there so many d*mn troublemakers today?
“Shanyue! Watch out!” Wei Huan yanked the dagger from his waist and flung it at the black lizard’s neck—where the armor was thinnest. Black smoke rose from the wound. The lizard twisted and writhed violently on the ground. Wei Huan was just about to try subduing it when Yang Ling suddenly threw out a lotus fireball.
No good.
“That thing’s immune to fire!”
Sure enough, the lizard demon opened its mouth and swallowed the lotus fireballs whole. Its body suddenly grew massive—at least three meters tall—and its scales shot out like bullets. While the combat suits on the trio held up, the exposed parts of their skin were cut by the sharp scales.
The tiger demon bound in foxfire cackled wildly, “So much for the elite students of Shanhai University! I’ll swallow you all alive today!”
Yang Ling was about to blow up when a bang rang out—Wei Huan’s bullet pierced right through the tiger demon’s forehead. Blood sprayed, and the beast collapsed stiffly to the ground. Yang Ling was momentarily stunned and turned around to see Wei Huan holding up his rifle, frowning slightly as smoke drifted from the barrel.
Yan Shanyue was still struggling to restrain the other monsters with blue demon power glowing at her wrists. She cast another thick foxfire chain that wrapped around the giant lizard. “Why did you kill—”
“Too noisy,” Wei Huan interrupted. “He won’t die. Just seriously injured. Be careful.” Then he fired again at the lizard, aiming at its exposed underjaw. The creature shrieked as even more scales burst out—like a hail of bullets.
One of the wolf demons trapped in foxfire struggled fiercely, eyes bloodshot, face twisted. “You f***ing shot our boss?! You arrogant little human, I swear—”
Bang.
Wei Huan shot him in the head. One clean hit.
“Anyone else got a problem?”
Both Yan Shanyue and Yang Ling were stunned. No one had expected a mere human to act so ruthlessly and decisively. The other demons froze, too scared to make a move.
Amid the dispersing gun smoke, Wei Huan smirked, raising an eyebrow.
“Good boys don’t get shot in the head.”
