Chapter 57: Passing Through the Official Road (Part 8)
The sound was like someone tapping on the window from outside. Considering that the carriage was in motion, it was obviously not something ordinary. Bai Chunsheng suspected it was a two-headed bird demon native to the area. He wasn’t afraid—after all, he was sitting next to the plague himself, Yan Yi. If anything, the demon should be the one afraid.
Then, suddenly, a thought struck Bai Chunsheng. Yes!
He should constantly create trouble and danger for Yan Yi. That way, he could gradually uncover Yan Jingqiu’s weakness.
Of course, he needed to control the situation carefully—he didn’t want to end up harming himself or making Yan Yi decide that he was too much of a nuisance and simply abandon him.
Half-lidding his eyes, Bai Chunsheng’s gaze turned sly. His thin eyelids fluttered slightly, revealing a mischievous glint. Then, with a sudden burst of action, he threw open the window and swiftly rolled backward, practically leaping beside Yan Yi.
Yan Yi: “……”
Unfortunately, the expected red-beaked, two-headed bird demon was nowhere to be seen. Instead, Jiang Ji was hovering beside the carriage, standing on a pitch-black sword and keeping pace with them. In her arms was a young woman, still unconscious.
She looked much better than she had a few hours ago—at least on the surface. Jiang Ji didn’t seem surprised to see Bai Chunsheng and Yan Yi. She smiled and asked, “Can I get on?”
“Of course,” Yan Yi replied. “Since you paid for the ride, you’re welcome to board.”
As the carriage slowed to a stop, Bai Chunsheng, disappointed, returned to his seat. Yan Yi glanced at him a few times.
—Completely misunderstanding Bai Chunsheng’s intentions, Yan Yi thought he had just been looking for an excuse to throw himself into his arms and act spoiled.
Yan Yi had been ready for it. Too bad Bai Chunsheng let him down.
Jiang Ji carried the still unconscious disciple from Tianqing Sect onto the carriage, and luckily, there was plenty of space in it. She placed the person in the middle and then carefully took a thick cotton coat from her storage bag to cover her.
The veil that had been draped over this person had been removed, revealing a delicate face. Not only Jiang Ji, but also Bai Chunsheng recognized her vaguely, and he craned his neck, letting out a soft “Eh?”
“Have you seen her before?” Jiang Ji asked.
Bai Chunsheng was still wearing a mask, and though he had intended to disguise his voice, he quickly remembered that he had used his real voice in front of the injured Jiang Ji yesterday, and she must have already remembered it. Trying to disguise it now would only raise her suspicions, so he smiled and revealed the woman’s identity: “She’s He Shan from Tianqing Sect. Even if I haven’t met her, I’d still recognize her.”
He Shan, the chief disciple of Tianqing Sect.
It was said that she was a rare cultivator, dedicated to her practice, and even though she was under a thousand years old, she had already reached the point where she could attempt to break through to the Dao Stage. Though her talent wasn’t as remarkable as Bai Chunsheng’s or Yan Jingqiu’s, compared to the geniuses often praised in the cultivation world, she was indeed excellent.
Before the incident with Tianqing Sect, she was the most likely candidate to become the next sect leader.
Jiang Ji, with none of the disarray she had shown yesterday, remarked, “That’s true.”
She sighed and said, “She practiced a rare technique called the ‘Lingxi Jue,’ which allows the practitioner to conceal their presence. Thanks to this technique, these people thought she was dead, which allowed her to narrowly escape disaster.”
After a brief silence, Jiang Ji stood up and slightly bowed, first to Bai Chunsheng and then to Yan Yi, saying, “If I was disrespectful yesterday, I hope you’ll forgive me.”
“If there is anything within my ability to help with, feel free to talk to me.”
Her surface intent seemed to be thanking the two men, but a closer look revealed she was subtly trying to ingratiate herself with them.
It made sense.
After all, the third branch of the Yan family, where Yan Fengxing belonged, had been sent to the Cold Abyss as punishment by the Yan family’s ancestors. Yet, they had come back to hunt down Jiang Ji and the others, which might have been the will of Yan Jianhang.
Given this, it was clear that with one failure, more people would likely be sent after them.
Bai Chunsheng couldn’t help but feel a headache coming on just thinking about it. Yan Fengxing was already at the late Dao Stage, and the next people sent would certainly be stronger. These people were likely pillars of the Yan family, and since Bai Chunsheng couldn’t defeat them, he’d have to rely on Yan Yi.
Once Yan Jingqiu recovered, things would become even more troublesome. At that point, he’d be able to pay back every grudge against the Yan family.
Thinking about it, Bai Chunsheng grew increasingly anxious.
Yan Yi, unaware of Bai Chunsheng’s internal struggle, saw that he was silent and simply replied to Jiang Ji, “It’s fine.”
He was worried that Jiang Ji might be overstepping and causing Bai Chunsheng to feel jealous, so he added, “It wasn’t to save you. I only killed those who were controlling the illusion and those gathered there. I don’t know anything else.” He didn’t know Yan Fengxing, so he didn’t recognize him either.
This point made Bai Chunsheng curious, and he deliberately asked Jiang Ji, “I vaguely remember that Yan Fengxing and the others were sent to the Cold Abyss by the Yan family’s ancestor for punishment. That matter caused quite a stir in the cultivation world. How did they return?”
Jiang Ji smiled quietly, “Do you know why the third branch of the Yan family was punished?”
The author’s note:
Jiang Ji: “Do you know why the third branch of the Yan family was punished?”
The person in question shook their head in ignorance.
