Chapter 82: The Golden Cage Traps the White Phoenix (5)
“……”
Was it so hard to just talk properly? Why did he have to threaten him? It wasn’t as if he absolutely had to stay up there.
He had long heard that among demon cultivators, there were some particularly twisted ones who liked to keep humans as pets—those strange, hairless creatures. They weren’t fond of soft fur, but instead preferred the smooth, jade-like skin of humans. He never thought he would run into one today, and worse, this one insisted he take on human form.
Shameless. Bah.
Bai Chunsheng was choked up for a moment, almost forgetting what he had wanted to say. He dazedly sat there, then, when he remembered, his eyes lit up again as he looked at Bo Yan and asked with a sparkle in his gaze: “The sword cultivator who was with me—where is he now?”
If Bo Yan responded by asking where the sword cultivator was, then Bai Chunsheng would know Yan Yi hadn’t been caught.
If Bo Yan said Yan Yi had already been captured, Bai Chunsheng could follow up by asking whether they could at least put Yan Yi in the same cell with him. A hundred years of loneliness was far too unbearable; Bai Chunsheng wanted someone to talk to.
Even if Yan Yi simply sat there without doing anything, Bai Chunsheng would still feel reassured.
Bo Yan’s eyes were dark and deep. “That’s all you want to ask me?”
He hadn’t expected Bai Chunsheng’s first question to not be about his own fate, but rather concern for “Yan Yi.” For a moment, Bo Yan’s feelings became strangely tangled. Should he admit that, in Bai Chunsheng’s heart, he was this insignificant? Or should he be glad that “Yan Yi” could truly occupy a place in Bai Chunsheng’s heart?
Of course—perhaps it was “Yan Yi’s” identity and that face of his that made Bai Chunsheng fall into the illusion of loving Yan Jingqiu again. After all, the one he had always loved was the already dead Yan Jingqiu.
The more similar they were, the more deeply Bai Chunsheng would love.
That favoritism had nothing to do with him.
Yan Yi was the successor of Yan Jingqiu, inheriting the love that belonged to Bai Chunsheng.
It wasn’t fair to anyone.
Bai Chunsheng noticed Bo Yan suddenly fall silent.
Bo Yan tilted his head slightly, his voice turning colder as he asked, “Why are you asking about him?”
Bai Chunsheng cautiously tested the waters. “Since I’ve already been caught by you, could you let him go?”
If they could, that would be best. Even though Yan Yi was captured because of him, if Bai Chunsheng could save him now, it would mean he had rescued him once more. And if Yan Jingqiu ever regained his memories, he would have to acknowledge this debt of gratitude and repay him by breaking him out.
Bo Yan’s reply was ruthless. “No.”
“Oh.”
That was fine too. Bai Chunsheng then asked, “Then can you at least put him in the cell next to mine? I get lonely.”
Bo Yan didn’t answer.
Being stared at made Bai Chunsheng uneasy again, and he wanted to climb down.
Their body heat seeped through the thin layer of fabric where they touched, and a sense of danger slowly crawled up Bai Chunsheng’s spine, making him frightened.
He shifted his bottom nervously.
Bo Yan pressed down on him again. “Don’t move!”
Bai Chunsheng froze, blinking up at Bo Yan.
This man was strange. He had captured him, yet hadn’t tortured him, hadn’t drawn his blood to open the secret realm of the Wutong Tree Sea. He also wasn’t in any hurry to parade him in public for the obvious charade of making him acknowledge the dragon clan as the rightful rulers of the Ten Thousand Demon Sect.
Seeing Bai Chunsheng completely indifferent, Bo Yan ground his teeth and demanded, “Don’t you have anything you want to say to me?”
Anything to say?
Bai Chunsheng bobbed his head like a pecking chick and, full of fear and trembling respect, asked, “Could I maybe climb down? I can kneel on the ground if you want.”
Bo Yan suppressed his fury, forced a smile, and nodded. “Fine.”
Half an hour later.
Bai Chunsheng was blindfolded by Shen Qing, who led him through countless twists and turns until he was thrown into a stone chamber beneath the Yaoyue Pavilion’s lake, where he was temporarily imprisoned.
Along the way, Bai Chunsheng overheard Shen Qing whispering to another attendant, saying that in a few days he would be sent to the Cold Cavern, where he would be frozen for hundreds or even thousands of years.
These next few days would be the last stretch of good days for Bai Chunsheng.
He listened to Shen Qing’s footsteps fading away after the door shut.
Bai Chunsheng: “……”
