Chapter 106
If the enemy ever discovered that the devastating casualties they suffered were because their opponent’s general was simply too happy, they would probably faint from sheer rage.
For days, Yuwen Min had been immersed in euphoria. Before his departure, Lu Hanzhi had told him that Ah Chan was his biological son.
His own son? How could that be possible?
He had spent an entire day agonizing over the question, unable to make sense of it.
But after thinking it through, it wasn’t entirely impossible.
If he calculated the timeline of Lu Hanzhi’s pregnancy, he had indeed been staying at the Lu residence at that time.
That night, his eldest brother had wanted to be alone with Lu Xuzhi, so he had shared a few drinks with Yuwen Min and sent him to bed early.
He only remembered drinking, but had no recollection of when he had fallen asleep.
Thinking back carefully, his memories of that night were oddly hazy.
Even when drunk, he could usually recall at least a rough outline of what had happened.
But that night? His memory had been wiped completely clean. That had never happened before.
He didn’t know how it had happened, but what mattered was—he was happy!
He had never liked anyone the way he liked Lu Hanzhi. At first, he had only admired his intelligence and potential.
Then he found him interesting—his mind was full of bizarre and brilliant ideas, always popping up unexpectedly.
Later, he realized that Lu Hanzhi was breathtakingly beautiful. How could anyone be this beautiful?
Only recently had he remembered—Lu Hanzhi had always been known as the most beautiful person in the capital.
He felt incredibly fortunate. Somehow, in a daze, he had managed to bring Lu Hanzhi home as his own.
That night, his desires had overwhelmed him, and he had deliberately pretended not to bring the suppression pills.
Because once the urge took over, without Doctor Lin’s medicine to suppress it, he had no choice but to personally help Lu Hanzhi ease his condition.
No wonder Lu Hanzhi had said he didn’t mind! How could he mind? He had only ever been with Yuwen Min, so what was there to mind in the first place?
But then another thought hit him—what if that wasn’t the reason?
What if Lu Hanzhi didn’t mind because he simply didn’t care who he slept with?
The first time, he had ended up in bed with Yuwen Min by accident. If the same person did it again, once or twice more, would it even make a difference?
And considering how quickly he had rushed to get contraceptive pills from Doctor Lin afterward, he clearly didn’t take their relationship seriously. He was only afraid of getting pregnant again!
What was he really thinking?
The thought made Yuwen Min restless.
Would this tiny coalition of enemy forces hurry up and attack already?
He needed to finish this battle and return home to interrogate that heartless man—just what did he take Yuwen Min for?
Meanwhile, that “heartless” man was doing business at an impressive pace. The moment his new paper hit the market, it sold out instantly.
Lu Hanzhi had begun mass-producing bamboo fiber paper and wood fiber paper, pricing it at ten sheets per wen for A4 size—a remarkably low price.
For A3 size, it was five sheets per wen. Wholesale and retail prices were the same, fair and honest.
As Lu Hanzhi had predicted, every bookstore, private school, and even the government printing bureau in the capital flocked to buy his paper in bulk.
Even the palace placed orders—such fine paper was perfect for the princes to use for their studies and calligraphy practice.
Lu Hanzhi noticed that he was completing his business tasks at an increasingly rapid pace.
Perhaps it was because these recent projects had involved products that integrated easily into daily life. They were necessities, so they sold exceptionally well.
Yuwen Jue was utterly astonished. He followed Lu Hanzhi around all day, endlessly singing his praises.
“Han’er, you’re incredible! What have you invented today? How much money did you make today?”
Lu Hanzhi figured he needed to find something to keep his second sister-in-law occupied—otherwise, he would keep following him around like a little tail.
So he took out his private savings and handed them all over to Yuwen Jue.
Yuwen Jue stared at the thick stack of silver banknotes. It was a fortune—easily over a million taels.
Among them, two banknotes were made from Lu Hanzhi’s newly produced mulberry paper.
This was something Lu Hanzhi had learned from his studies—mulberry paper had unique properties: it was resistant to fading for a thousand years, highly durable, moisture-resistant, and impervious to insect damage.
It was the perfect material for painting, mounting artwork, drafting maps, and even printing currency.
Yuwen Jue held up the two banknotes made from mulberry paper and said, “The texture of this paper is indeed far superior to regular paper.”
Lu Hanzhi responded, “Second Sister-in-law, I’m not showing you the paper—I’m showing you the money! Did you take a good look? Do you see how much it is?”
Yuwen Jue glanced at the thick stack of silver banknotes. Each was worth ten thousand taels, and there were dozens of them.
With a bewildered expression, he asked, “Han’er, why are you giving me so much money?”
Lu Hanzhi replied, “Second Sister-in-law, how many private soldiers can this amount support? This is one million taels—my entire profit for the year.”
Yuwen Jue nearly choked on his own breath. One million taels… in a single year.
He was certain that even Lu Siwei wouldn’t dare claim he could earn a million taels in a year.
Han’er had truly accomplished something incredible this past year.
Yuwen Jue said, “This should be enough to support tens of thousands of soldiers.”
Lu Hanzhi nodded. “Although we have the Rong family’s army as a strong backing, recalling them from all over will take considerable effort. After all, we are not aiming for rebellion; we intend to take back the empire under peaceful circumstances. But, Second Sister-in-law, for peace to be an option, we must first have sufficient strength. Only with enough strength can we deter our enemies. Take this money and start recruiting private soldiers.”
Yuwen Jue held the weighty stack of banknotes, his gaze toward Lu Hanzhi carrying a heavy, unreadable emotion.
Lu Hanzhi, however, seemed to think of something else. He reached into his robe and pulled out an item, handing it over as he said, “Oh, right. If you find yourself too bored, why don’t you build what’s on this blueprint? I know you have your private troops and personal guard camp. I wouldn’t dare to handle something like this—it’s a heavy military weapon, after all. But since you’re a prince, you probably have the authority.”
With that, Lu Hanzhi handed the item to Yuwen Min. Yuwen Min took it, opened it for a glance, and asked, “What is this?”
Lu Hanzhi replied, “It’s a forging blueprint for the Eight-Ox Ballista. Try making one—it’s a siege weapon of immense power!”
Originally, he had planned to give it to Yuwen Min before, but things had been delayed due to various matters.
Now, with Second Sister-in-law having some free time during pregnancy, this could be a good project to focus on.
As expected, Yuwen Jue became intrigued by the Eight-Ox Ballista.
He spread the blueprint out on the desk, set up a small work area opposite Lu Hanzhi, and said, “Han’er, how did you know I’m good with handiwork? Let me try making a model first, and then I’ll have the Armory Division craft a full-scale version.”
At that moment, Lu Hanzhi was busy studying an eyeshadow palette. He still had one final phase of his mission to complete, though it was only a matter of time.
In the meantime, he wanted to introduce a few more new products to his Han Ji Fragrance House.
Hearing Yuwen Jue’s words, he looked up and said, “I didn’t know! I just thought you seemed bored. With Second Brother away, you don’t seem to have much to do, do you?”
Yuwen Jue thought for a moment and admitted, “That’s true…”
Lu Hanzhi set down what he was working on and said, “You miss Second Brother, don’t you?”
Yuwen Jue’s hand, which had been holding the blueprint, paused for a moment. After a long silence, he finally gave a soft “Mm.”
Picking up a short blade and a piece of wood nearby, he added, “Aside from that time I was imprisoned, this is the longest we’ve been apart. He said that separating now is for the sake of being together in the long run. He doesn’t want me to ever experience something like being sent to the Great Zhao prison again, so he must plan carefully for our future.”
Lu Hanzhi put down his work and suggested, “Second Sister-in-law, why don’t I help you build the crossbow?”
Yuwen Jue looked up at Lu Hanzhi, who smiled at him warmly.
Unable to help himself, Yuwen Jue smiled back and said, “Han’er, you don’t need to accompany me. The feeling of longing is ever-present—can you really keep me company day and night?”
Lu Hanzhi responded, “Why not? I’ll sleep with you at night, and we’ll chat about everything under the stars.”
As he spoke, he leaned against Yuwen Jue’s shoulder and even rubbed against him like a spoiled child.
Yuwen Jue pinched Lu Hanzhi’s cheek and asked, “Do you act like this in front of Ah Min too?”
Lu Hanzhi thought about how he behaved in front of Yuwen Min and immediately felt a shiver run down his spine.
Shaking his head, he said, “Acting spoiled is meant for elders and seniors, isn’t it? Yuwen Min is as dense as a wooden block—even if I acted spoiled, he wouldn’t get the hint.”
Yuwen Jue looked confused. “Wouldn’t get the hint…. about what?”
Lu Hanzhi stuck out his tongue and said, “Nothing. Second Sister-in-law, has Second Brother sent any letters home?”
Yuwen Jue shook his head. “No. They’ve probably only just reached the western borderlands. This journey is extremely perilous—they likely don’t have much time to write letters.”
Lu Hanzhi sighed and muttered, “No wonder they say letters from home are worth a fortune…” As he said this, he suddenly found himself missing Yuwen Min.
When he had been here, it hadn’t felt like anything special. But now that someone who had always been by his side was gone, the absence was strangely difficult to adjust to.
He murmured, “I wonder how they’re doing right now.”
Feeling the conversation had turned too somber, Yuwen Jue shifted the topic. “Actually, Han’er, you don’t need to worry about me—I’m not just sitting around idle every day. There’s something I’ve been investigating lately, and I still have to oversee many of the affairs in the capital.”
Lu Hanzhi raised an eyebrow. “Oh? What are you investigating?”
Yuwen Jue replied, “An old case. The imperial palace is filled with secrets from the past. Digging up just one of them would be enough to stir up endless gossip among the common people.”
Lu Hanzhi had always been fond of gossip and immediately perked up. “Oh? What kind of big secret? Tell me about it!”
Yuwen Jue shook his head. “It’s best not to reveal anything before I’ve gotten to the bottom of it. This is for your own good, Han’er.”
Lu Hanzhi understood and didn’t pry further. Some royal secrets were dangerous to know—asking too much could cost one’s life.
He figured it was better to stick to his farming business for now. After all, his original plan had been to follow the path of agricultural development and economic growth.
But somehow, along the way, his storyline had gone completely off-track.
Not only did he have to focus on farming and economic growth, but he also had to navigate the path of aiding a rising dragon, and perhaps even take on a child-rearing subplot.
Lu Hanzhi sighed internally. Why did he have to carry three major plotlines all by himself?
Just as he was about to return to drawing his production line, a young attendant hurried over and whispered something into Prince Chu’s ear.
Prince Chu furrowed his brows. “You’ve investigated it? Are you certain it’s empty?”
The attendant replied, “It’s empty. We tunneled in from the back of the mountain, and the coffin remains intact. The craftsmen probed from the bottom—it’s completely hollow inside.”
Prince Chu pondered for a moment before saying, “That’s strange.”
The attendant asked, “Your Highness, should we seal the tunnel?”
After a brief thought, Prince Chu said, “Yes, seal it. Make sure no traces are left behind.”
The attendant withdrew.
Lu Hanzhi looked up and asked, “Second Sister-in-law, are you investigating that person?”
