Chapter 11: Six Suns (11)
The research institute had been built in the suburbs. The closer they got to it, the fewer living dead they saw. By now, there were no living dead left on the main road at all. Occasionally, a few mutated birds chased after the truck, but once they realized they couldn’t break through its defenses, they quickly flew away.
They parked the truck diagonally across from the institute. Fatty’s tone turned grave. “This place is full of players.”
“They’re all sitting in their cars waiting for nightfall.” Jian Yuntai glanced out the window, understanding flashing through his eyes.
Outside the institute’s main gate stretched a long, narrow tree-lined path. More than twenty weeping willows grew along both sides of the road. The thickest branches were as stout as elephant legs; even the thinnest were as thick as an adult’s forearm.
Before they arrived, some players had tried to force their way in. They had now become corpses lying along the road. Others had attempted to drive past the willows, but moving vehicles made obvious targets. Both the drivers and their cars had been smashed flat.
With such grim lessons already learned, only someone brain-dead would dare provoke those two rows of willows again.
“Let’s wait until dark.”
As he spoke, Jian Yuntai glanced at the supplies in the back seat for what felt like the eight-hundredth time and swallowed.
He was so hungry.
He felt like he was about to starve to death.
The frequency of his hunger had been increasing. His stomach often cramped violently, and his mind grew foggier by the day.
It made him nervous. He couldn’t stop thinking about the day he awakened—how he had fainted from hunger. What exactly had happened after he passed out? How had he ended up being captured by the Xiang’an Team?
If he fainted from hunger again…
Jian Yuntai didn’t dare imagine it, but he had a premonition that something extremely terrifying would happen.
Fatty was actually quite considerate. Without asking, he opened the supply crate.
“We can’t take it with us anyway. You might as well eat it all.”
Jian Yuntai shot him a grateful look. Before he could speak, a shout burst out beside him:
“All of it? Eat all of it?!”
Since getting on this “thief’s ship,” this was the loudest Li Wei had spoken. He looked at Jian Yuntai in confusion, then at the two large crates of airdropped supplies in the truck bed.
There were at least thirty or forty bottles of mineral water and over two hundred packs of compressed biscuits in there!
Eat it all?
What a joke. Impossible!
Li Wei didn’t believe it at all, but he didn’t dare say it out loud. He could only grumble silently to himself—what an outrageous brag.
And yet…
In the next half hour, he witnessed a miracle.
Jian Yuntai ate methodically: five compressed biscuits with one bottle of water, then another five and another bottle. He ate incredibly fast, biting straight into the biscuits and swallowing them down, pouring the water directly into his throat. His stomach seemed like a bottomless pit—no matter how much he consumed, there was no sign of fullness.
The first time, Fatty and Young Master Xue had awkwardly tried to rescue some food from his hands. This time, they were highly skilled.
Like they had undergone some kind of special military training, the moment they saw the crate nearly emptied, they swiftly grabbed a few bottles of water and clutched them tightly to their chests.
Li Wei stared blankly at the now-empty crates.
What the hell was going on?!
Why was he the only one reacting like this? The other three acted as if this were perfectly normal. Was eating that much really not strange?
Damn it—was something wrong with the world, or was something wrong with him?!
The livestream chat nearly laughed itself to death:
“The area of his psychological trauma just expanded again, hahahaha.”
“Every time Jian Dadan eats, the people next to him make expressions worthy of memes, hahaha.”
“Watching Jian Dadan eat is oddly satisfying. It makes you hungry just looking at him. I want to kidnap him home and watch him eat every day~”
“Sis, are you out of your mind? Are you trying to go bankrupt? (Scared of getting beaten by my wife, dog-head for protection hahaha).”
About two hours later, the sun was on the verge of extinguishing.
The sky had already dimmed. Everything became blurred and abstract. They all felt as if they were inside the belly of a fish, with only a thin line of light lingering on the distant horizon.
Across from the institute, at least seventy vehicles were parked. No one got out to communicate. Most people remained inside their cars, guarded and vigilant. Each vehicle kept a certain distance from the others.
They waited.
Everyone waited.
All the players fixed their eyes on the sun. The moment it went out, they would rush into the institute.
Under countless burning gazes, the artificial sun slowly dimmed, and the temperature gradually dropped.
Finally—
The sun completely extinguished.
Joy flickered across everyone’s brows. But before they could act, an electronic voice exploded into the air:
【STEP1: Go to the institute】
【Researcher ID badges are stored at the institute gate. Players must pick up an ID badge and clock in at the entrance to complete the task. Please note: there are only 40 ID badges in total. First come, first served. Those who arrive late will be considered to have failed the mission.】
【Mission reward: 10 days of survival time.】
“?!” The screams nearby clearly grew louder.
Forty badges? But there were around ninety people gathered outside the institute. That meant less than half of them could complete the mission.
In almost an instant, engines roared as every car started simultaneously.
Someone had already driven forward.
The leading sedan charged onto the tree-lined path. Then something shocking happened again.
A weeping willow at the roadside suddenly lifted its branches high and, with a sickening squelch, pierced through the car’s back seat. The engine sputtered and died. The player inside, seated in the front, scrambled out in a panic.
He became a moving target. Wherever he ran, the willows treated him as an enemy and lashed at him frantically.
“How is this possible? It’s already dark! Why are the willows still moving?!” Young Master Xue stared outside in astonishment.
Li Wei asked cautiously, “Weren’t they supposed to move before?”
Young Master Xue raised his voice in emphasis. “No! Of course not! Mutated plants and animals fall into dormancy after nightfall—that’s a fixed rule of the instance. Otherwise, why do you think nearly a hundred people were waiting here? We were all waiting for night!”
“Instance… what is that?” Li Wei asked blankly.
No one in the car had time to answer him. In just the dozen seconds they had stayed still, several vehicles had already driven into the middle of the tree-lined path. Some players had even dashed forward on foot to the gate and grabbed ID badges, waving them excitedly.
“The willows aren’t as strong as before! Sinister Monster Type brothers, just charge in—it’s fine!”
So many Sinister Monster Types got out of their cars and charged.
Their speed might not have matched a sedan’s, but their physical strength far exceeded that of a vehicle.
“Quick, quick, quick!” Fatty urged Jian Yuntai anxiously. “Let’s switch seats—I’ll drive us through.”
“There’s no time!” Young Master Xue was even more frantic. “Seven or eight people already got badges. All Sinister Monster Types! When I get out of here, I’m reporting this instance for Sinister Type discrimination. How are non–Sinister Monster Types supposed to survive in this situation?!”
Li Wei couldn’t understand any of this. Every word sounded familiar, yet strung together they became incomprehensible nonsense.
But one thing he understood perfectly—Young Master Xue was telling Jian Yuntai to drive.
What the hell was this madness?
First of all, whether Jian Yuntai even had a driver’s license was questionable. Secondly… on the way here, they had taken turns driving. When it was Jian Yuntai’s turn, he had asked a sentence so horrifying it made their blood run cold—
“Which one is the accelerator?”
From that moment on, Jian Yuntai had been strictly forbidden from touching the steering wheel.
And now they were really going to let him drive?!
While Li Wei was still in shock, Jian Yuntai excitedly grabbed the steering wheel. He had been itching to touch it the entire journey.
Unfortunately, while he dared to drive, the others didn’t dare to sit in the car with him, so he had spent the trip idly acting as a mascot.
Now, at last, the opportunity had come!
He absolutely wasn’t going to let it slip away. Nodding calmly, he said, “Don’t worry. Just sit tight.”
Li Wei: “…”
That wasn’t the issue of whether they sat tight or not!
Li Wei wanted to protest, but on this thief’s ship, he had absolutely no say. He could only hurriedly fasten his seatbelt.
The next second, Jian Yuntai slammed his foot down on the accelerator. The truck roared to life and shot forward like an arrow released from a bow.
He drove the truck with such force that it created a powerful push-back sensation.
The wind outside howled in through the windows like a barrage of slaps, whipping across their faces and instantly numbing half of them. This wasn’t driving a truck anymore—this was flying a plane. Young Master Xue almost thought the wheels had lifted off the ground and they were about to blast straight into outer space.
“AHHHH! AHHH!”
The people inside the truck screamed nonstop. Their voices overlapped like they were performing a song together—bass, baritone, and tenor. The three of them were even on different pitches, and the result sounded bizarrely harmonious.
“Stay strong,” Jian Yuntai said, somehow finding the time to comfort them. He had already driven onto the tree-lined path. Seeing willow branches lash toward them, he jerked the steering wheel hard. The entire truck drifted sideways.
“AHHHHHHHHH!” All three of them tilted violently to one side. Their screams turned into outright wails, as if their souls were leaving their bodies and chasing after them.
The livestream audience was laughing themselves to death. “Quick, screenshot it, hahaha! Everyone except Jian Dadan is a meme right now!”
The other players on the tree-lined path watched wide-eyed as the truck hurtled toward them. It looked like its wheels were about to leave the ground.
They scrambled out of the way in shock.
Who the hell was launching a rocket here?!
Jian Yuntai’s gaze remained calm. At this speed, they should all be able to grab an ID badge.
The thought had barely formed in his mind when Fatty, fighting off motion sickness and gagging, shouted, “Dadan’er! Look to the right!”
“?”
Jian Yuntai glanced to the right, confusion flashing across his face—then his heart sank.
Another truck was barely trailing behind them, just a little off to the side. The driver inside had bloodshot eyes and a deathly pale face.
It was Jiang Jiu.
Why was this guy like a lingering ghost that wouldn’t go away?!
Amid the screams, Jian Yuntai accelerated again. Jiang Jiu, like a madman, somehow kept up.
No—he wasn’t like a madman. He was already insane.
On this tree-lined path, everyone—including Jian Yuntai—had only one goal: to grab an ID badge. But Jiang Jiu was different. His only target was Jian Yuntai.
He completely ignored the willow branches on both sides and the other players on the road. He yanked the steering wheel sharply——and slammed straight into the side of Jian Yuntai’s truck.
With a deafening bang, like thunder exploding out of a clear sky, everyone turned in horror.
The two trucks collided under the massive impact and were sent flying together. Jian Yuntai’s truck flipped twice in midair before crashing down with a thunderous boom, smashing a deep crater into the ground.
Fatty had been wearing his seatbelt, but the force of the impact nearly squeezed the breath out of him. He didn’t care about himself at all. Frantically, he reached out, trying to grab Jian Yuntai.
He was one second too late.
Jian Yuntai’s body pitched forward out of his seat and slammed violently into the windshield. The thick glass shattered instantly under the impact. Shards filled the air. With nothing to brace against, his body flew two meters out of the truck—and then stopped in midair.
Clatter—
Countless shards of glass fell to the ground, the crisp sound echoing repeatedly.
“Dadan’er!” Fatty’s eyes turned red instantly.
Young Master Xue in the back seat was in no better shape. Dazed, he leaned forward to look—and froze in shock.
His mouth hung open. He couldn’t process what he was seeing.
A willow branch as thick as an arm had pierced straight through Jian Yuntai’s right chest, suspending him in midair.
Blood flowed down the vivid green branch, dripping steadily onto the ground below.
Jian Yuntai’s head hung low.
No one knew whether he was alive or dead.
“!!!!”
The livestream audience nearly went insane at the sight. The more hot-tempered viewers even shot to their feet in panic. Everyone stared wide-eyed at the screen, terrified that the next second they would see the message: “The streamer account has been deleted.”
And the thing they feared most finally happened.
Shua—
The screen abruptly went completely black. There was only one explanation for this phenomenon—
The streamer’s heartbeat had stopped.
“…”
The chat fell into dead silence.
Several seconds later, someone finally typed in disbelief: “Jian Yuntai… is he d-dead?!”
