Chapter 13: Six Suns (13)
Under everyone’s silent gaze, Jian Yuntai lightly rested his arm on the iron club and used it to push himself to his feet.
All the willow branches seemed to pause for a moment.
Dust floated in the air, fine grains of sand gathering and dispersing. Behind the drifting dust was Jian Yuntai’s expressionless face.
Jiang Jiu’s heart pounded wildly. He wanted to say something vicious, but in reality, he couldn’t stop himself from taking another small step back.
It felt as though he had been targeted by a venomous scorpion. After only a few seconds of meeting Jian Yuntai’s eyes, goosebumps had already spread across Jiang Jiu’s back, and his legs began to weaken.
How could this be?
Jian Yuntai’s gaze was completely different from before!
Jiang Jiu tried to bolster himself internally. What kind of enemies had he not faced before? How could he possibly be afraid of an eighteen-year-old teenager?
Thinking this, his heart steadied slightly.
But in the very next second, a sudden force surged through the iron club in his hand. Jiang Jiu couldn’t hold on to it and was dragged a step forward along with it. The scent of blood rushed into his nose.
This was Jian Yuntai’s blood… Only then did Jiang Jiu snap back to his senses.
What exactly was he afraid of? Jian Yuntai was severely injured—the willow branch was still lodged in his chest! If this kind of wound were on anyone else, they would have collapsed long ago. Jian Yuntai was most likely just forcing himself to hold on!
The moment this thought surfaced in his mind, he saw the iron club slowly lift right before his eyes.
Was he trying to hit him?!
Jiang Jiu panicked. It was too late to run now. He could only raise both arms to shield his head in a defensive posture.
Yet the anticipated heavy blow never came.
Jiang Jiu lowered his arms and hesitantly looked up.
He saw Jian Yuntai biting the iron club horizontally between his teeth, his gaze lowered toward the sharp tip of the willow branch protruding from his chest.
After staring at it for a few seconds, he raised his hand.
Rip—
Under Jiang Jiu’s nearly horrified stare, Jian Yuntai pulled the willow branch out with one hand. In an instant, bright red blood burst forth like a torrential downpour, splattering hard across Jiang Jiu’s face.
The blood still carried warmth as it dripped down his cheeks. It felt as though countless ants were crawling across his skin. The vivid sensation nearly suffocated him for a moment.
Before Jiang Jiu could react, Jian Yuntai slightly lifted his eyes. His tone sounded like a sigh—or perhaps a faint laugh.
“What were you afraid of?”
“……”
Jiang Jiu took half a step back—lunatic.
The word suddenly appeared in his mind without reason, emerging abruptly.
He immediately retreated another step.
Jian Yuntai lightly lifted his foot and advanced one step.
Jiang Jiu retreated several more steps. Now it wasn’t just the eye contact that terrified him—even his weapon had been taken!
He wanted to turn and flee, yet he didn’t dare expose his back. He could only watch helplessly.
In his field of vision, Jian Yuntai’s figure swayed slightly as he casually carried the iron club toward him. His pace wasn’t fast at all—he looked as if he were strolling leisurely through a backyard garden. Yet this unhurried pace created an overwhelming sense of pressure.
Clang, clang, clang—
Clang, clang, clang—
The iron club dragged along the ground, its end scraping against the concrete and producing a scalp-numbing sound.
Gulp. Jiang Jiu swallowed hard. Just as he was about to ignore everything and turn to run, his eyes suddenly widened.
Jian Yuntai moved so fast that he couldn’t react. Like an afterimage, he circled behind him. A soft laugh brushed against his ear: “Oh? So you were afraid of me.”
“……!!!”
Jiang Jiu immediately spun to the right. Before he could take even two steps, his body suddenly pitched forward.
Nothing had tripped him, yet he fell for no reason.
Jian Yuntai crouched down and looked down at him. The iron club in his hand pressed against Jiang Jiu’s throat as he moved. After watching him for a moment, Jian Yuntai said calmly, “You were taken hostage by me now.”
“!!!” The livestream audience erupted in excitement:
“Ahhhh, Wifey was incredible! Screenshot, screenshot! Ever since I entered Wifey’s stream I’ve been screenshotting nonstop!”
“Hahaha I’m dying of laughter, Jiang Jiu you idiot—did you just deliver a weapon to Jian Dadan?”
“Ahhh… Wifey! I’m done, what about you guys?”
“Girl, you were way too fast—Wifey wouldn’t be satisfied, hahaha!”
“Wait… was I really the only one who thought that was strange?! The iron club froze just now! And Jiang Jiu suddenly fell—I saw it clearly, he wasn’t tripped!”
“Now that you mention it, Jian Dadan’s gaze did seem kind of off. It just felt… ah, I can’t quite explain it.”
“Are you guys hallucinating? Didn’t Jiang Jiu just fall on his own? And the iron club freezing—I went to Fatty’s stream just then so I didn’t see it, but how could something like that even happen?”
As the discussion shifted to this point, most of the audience felt half-believing and half-doubting. Someone commented in confusion, “Come to think of it, whenever I watched other new streamers before, I could basically figure out their Sinister Type within an hour. Jian Dadan is the first one I’ve watched for two days straight and still have no idea what his Sinister Type is.”
“So what exactly is Wifey’s Sinister Type?”
While the livestream audience was in heated discussion, Jiang Jiu was already in complete panic.
He looked toward the hesitant players and roared, “What are you standing around for?! Kill Chen Sanxian and Young Master Xue! I can heal—I’m impossible to kill… AHHH!!!”
Before he could finish speaking, Jiang Jiu suddenly let out a bloodcurdling scream. His right arm was torn off by sheer force, blood spraying everywhere.
The scream was utterly miserable. All the players shuddered in unison, their expressions becoming even more hesitant.
“You were really noisy.”
Jian Yuntai’s expression didn’t change. He slowly reached out and gripped Jiang Jiu’s jaw. This time, the latter couldn’t even scream; his face turned deathly pale as he struggled frantically.
“Healing didn’t mean regeneration. The first severed arm was just a warning. Guess what I was going to sever next?”
Under Jiang Jiu’s terrified gaze, Jian Yuntai tightened his five fingers, forcing Jiang Jiu’s head sharply upward.
There was no need to say it—the next step was his head.
Jiang Jiu trembled all over, unable to utter a single word.
Jian Yuntai glanced sideways at the surrounding players. Everyone who met his eyes instinctively looked away.
No. There were too many people.
If he killed Jiang Jiu, most of them would lose their incentive and stop opposing him. But Jiang Jiu had also brought several acquaintances with him. Those people were clearly itching to break through the willow branches’ strikes to rescue him.
With his current severely injured body, he might not be able to defeat them.
And there was an even more important point…Fatty, Young Master Xue, and Jinjin had all been captured.
His gaze swept past Young Master Xue—and Jian Yuntai suddenly paused.
Young Master Xue was winking exaggeratedly at him and gesturing with his hands. His thumb and index finger were pinched together, and a tiny crystal sparkled between them.
Young Master Xue had managed to create the small crystal? That made sense. If he still couldn’t produce one after an entire day, then even an old sow would have rested more efficiently than him.
Jian Yuntai’s brow twitched slightly. Raising his voice, he said, “I want to exchange hostages. I’ll release you, and you release them. Today’s matter ends here.”
“…” Jiang Jiu’s eyes snapped open.
After hesitating for a few seconds, he quickly figured out the angle of the situation. A trace of delight immediately appeared on his face.
—Jian Yuntai was still too young.
With the apocalypse at hand, who would care about a verbal agreement? Once he reached a safe place, he would once again put a bounty on the heads of all three. He would make sure Jian Yuntai died miserably.
Otherwise, it would be impossible to quell the hatred in his heart!
Jiang Jiu realized he was actually in the advantageous position. The fear in his heart was instantly tossed aside. With malicious intent, he said, “We can exchange hostages. But why should I trade myself alone for both of them? At most, I’ll exchange for one. Chen Sanxian or Young Master Xue—you choose.”
As soon as those words came out, both Young Master Xue and Fatty stiffened, their expressions turning extremely ugly.
After exchanging glances for a few seconds, they both turned to look at Jian Yuntai in unison, their eyes filled with conflict and hope.
The audiences in all three livestreams perked up instantly—damn, was it really this intense?!
Just as everyone waited nervously for Jian Yuntai’s answer, he didn’t hesitate at all. With genuine confusion, he asked, “Who said I was trading just you for them?”
“???” Everyone was dumbfounded.
Jiang Jiu was stunned as well, his face blank.
Under countless gazes, Jian Yuntai fixed his eyes on Jiang Jiu’s severed right arm. His tone was as calm as if he were discussing today’s weather. “Your left arm for Young Master Xue. Your right leg for Fatty. And by the way, you forgot a cat. It has a bad temper—if you leave it out, it’ll be unhappy.” After a pause, a faint smile appeared at the corner of Jian Yuntai’s lips. “Your head for Jinjin.”
“Meowwww~” Jinjin let out several aggrieved cries, then happily stretched out its soft pink paw pads.
The livestream audience wailed enviously:
“Ahhh I want to be Jinjin! Wifey really dotes on Jinjin. I never thought I’d be jealous of a cat.”
“So he’s trading a head for Jinjin? Does that mean the little kitty is actually the most important in Jian Dadan’s heart? Hahaha…”
“Sisters, I can’t take it anymore. Wifey’s gaze is so indulgent. From this angle I can totally imagine myself as Jinjin… I’m already this far gone, sob sob…”
“So? Have you made up your mind?” Seeing that Jiang Jiu remained silent, Jian Yuntai sighed. “Then I’ll make a move.”
“Wait! Wait!” Jiang Jiu nearly shrieked, his face filled with humiliation as he spoke.
“Deal!”
The drooping willow branches still whipped arrogantly through the air. Moonlight was obscured by dark clouds, and the tree-lined road was dim like a graveyard at night. Amid the tense standoff, a hostage exchange quietly took place.
Jiang Jiu clutched his injured right arm and ran toward the opposite side. Jinjin carried Fatty and Young Master Xue on its back and leapt over.
They crossed paths in the middle of the tree-lined road and brushed past one another. Jiang Jiu nearly bit through his teeth in hatred. He shot a resentful glare backward. Once he reached a safe place… to hell with the agreement. He would never let Jian Yuntai off!
Fatty jumped down from Jinjin’s back and barely managed to steady Jian Yuntai’s swaying body. He asked a pointless question, “You okay?”
Young Master Xue slid down while hunched over and stared in horror at Jian Yuntai’s right chest. “How could you be okay? Anyone with half a brain could tell this is serious—you’ve got a huge hole in your heart!”
“The heart is on the left,” Jian Yuntai replied weakly.
“That’s not the point!” Fatty said excitedly, gesturing wildly. “What the hell just happened? I saw that club freeze, then whoosh—you opened your eyes. I thought you were dead! Then you yanked out the willow branch and blood splashed everywhere like a goddess scattering flowers. Then you dragged the iron club, banging it on the ground. Even a chainsaw killer wouldn’t be as crazy as you…”
Under Jian Yuntai’s look as if he were staring at an idiot, Fatty finally realized his ability to organize his words was absolute garbage. Frustrated, he smacked Young Master Xue on the head.
“You explain!”
Young Master Xue was holding the small crystal and checking positioning. In just a few sentences, he clearly explained what had happened.
This time, Jian Yuntai looked at both of them as if they were fools.
“What nonsense are you talking about? I didn’t drag the iron club, and I didn’t pull out the willow branch.”
“???” Fatty and Young Master Xue both froze.
Not just them—even the livestream audience was stunned, feeling surprised.
Frowning, Fatty said, “Did your brain glitch out? If you didn’t drag the club, then how did you take Jiang Jiu hostage?”
“I just grabbed him,” Jian Yuntai said.
“What about the process?”
“…”
Jian Yuntai’s expression gradually darkened. He finally realized that he seemed to be missing a segment of memory.
That memory was hazy, as if separated by a thin membrane.
Seeing his expression, Fatty realized he didn’t seem to be joking. He kindly said, “Forget it. We’ll talk about it later. Let’s hurry into the research institute. It’s just a pity we didn’t complete Mission One—that was a whole ten days of survival time.”
“A blessing in disguise,” Jian Yuntai said.
Fatty didn’t respond, but his expression showed strong disagreement. In his view, losing a horse was simply losing a horse—what blessing could there possibly be?
But this time, he was truly wrong.
Just one second before Young Master Xue crushed the small crystal, a massive alarm suddenly blared from inside the research institute.
Beep! Beep-beep! Beep-beep-beep!
The sound was sharp and urgent, extremely unpleasant. It continued looping without pause.
“What’s happening?!” The players present were bewildered, staring in shock toward the institute.
Under everyone’s stunned gaze, the upper structure of the research institute—the ceiling itself—split apart from the middle. The entire layer of bricks lifted and opened to both sides. To the naked eye, it looked like a colossal creature growing in the dark starry sky angrily opening its massive jaws to devour the scattered moonlight.
Everything remained still for ten seconds.
Then, with a thunderous boom, a beam of light shot straight into the sky.
Everyone realized something utterly terrifying—the fourth sun had been launched ahead of schedule!
Blinding white light spread outward like ripples in water, at a speed impossible for human eyes to capture. Jian Yuntai had lived eighteen years and had never witnessed such a shocking sight.
The willow branches lay flat against the ground. People’s shadows tilted and shrank into tiny dots. The moon became nothing more than a “star.”
Under the immense radiance of the artificial sun, all of humanity resembled a lone boat upon a vast ocean. Their existence was insignificant; their life and death meant nothing.
A hoarse, low male voice sounded, tinged with confusion and bewilderment:
【I thought when my seniors smashed down my dorm room door, they had come to silence me. But… they didn’t. I was simply taken somewhere to have my blood drawn. I had never realized the research institute had such a place. It was hidden. It had refined medical equipment and many instruments—some I had never even seen before… I guessed this was the device that launched the sun. This was the device that would destroy the world.】
“That researcher named Song Yulu,” Young Master Xue said in surprise, lowering his voice. “Last time when he read his diary, I thought he was definitely dead. Didn’t expect him to still be alive.”
Fatty cursed, “Of course he’s alive. I told you NPCs usually don’t die that early.”
Song Yulu’s voice continued: 【While they were drawing my blood, I saw research materials my seniors had forgotten on the table. Only then did I clearly understand what kind of madness would occur after the fourth sun was launched.】
As his words fell, the artificial sun began emitting a buzzing hum.
Everyone instinctively looked up at the sky. Jian Yuntai did the same. In their view, the artificial sun looked as though it might explode at any moment, trembling incessantly.
Before anyone could speculate further, the artificial sun suddenly went still. About two seconds later, thick red smoke burst out from it, instantly blotting out the sky.
The red smoke did not drift slowly like ordinary gas. It resembled a colossal weight crashing down from above. In the blink of an eye, the entire field of vision turned crimson.
“Cough, cough, cough…”
The tree-lined road filled with coughing. Those with weaker throats even knelt on the ground and retched.
Jian Yuntai had it worse than the others. At least they could cover their mouths and noses with both hands. His right chest had a gaping hole; the pain made it impossible to lift his arm. He could only kneel on one knee and cover his nose with his left hand.
He was truly on the verge of suffocating.
Once the red smoke entered the lungs, it left the entire body with a bone-deep exhaustion that felt fatal. If he had to describe it, it was like running a marathon after staying awake for seven days straight.
Fatty tried to pull Jian Yuntai up, but when he tugged, he ended up collapsing onto the ground himself, coughing painfully.
Just as everyone was panicking in confusion, the electronic voice suddenly blared:【Players have entered a negative status.】
“?!” Shock filled everyone’s eyes.
The livestream audience, whose nerves had just eased slightly, tensed again. “What is that red smoke?”
【You have been infected by solar radiation. Thick smoke rises; your organs are gradually losing function.】
【In thirty minutes, you will be completely assimilated.】
【In thirty minutes, you will experience brain death.】
“!!!” A flash of shock crossed Jian Yuntai’s eyes.
Earlier, when they had driven to the research institute, he and Fatty and Young Master Xue had speculated about the consequences of launching the fourth sun. After discussing for a long time, the three of them had reached the same conclusion: the surviving natives in the instance would be infected.
At the time, he had been certain. After all, animals and plants had been infected. The dead natives had been infected. What else could there be? That only left the living natives.
But now he realized that assumption had been completely wrong.
He hadn’t expected that players would also be infected!
Jian Yuntai remained relatively calm, but the other players on the tree-lined road were already breaking down.
“There has to be a solution! I’m still young—I don’t want to die! I don’t want to turn into one of those living-dead monsters!”
Amid curses, resentment, and desperate cries, Song Yulu’s voice sounded like a clear spring in a desert, bringing boundless hope.
【To leave evidence of the crime, I stole thirty vials of serum from my seniors and buried them beneath each drooping willow tree in front of the research institute. The serum can halt the infection caused by the sun. I hope… the artificial sun project can end here.】
“Drooping willows? Thirty vials?!”
The players inside the institute were left completely stunned.
Was this a joke?
They had finally obtained work permits and entered, thinking they had secured ten days of survival time. In the end, had they instead taken a death sentence?!
At this distance, even if they ran back to the willow trees now, the serum would already be dug up. They wouldn’t get even a drop.
The quicker-reacting players had already rushed out of the institute gates, eyes bloodshot, sprinting toward the nearest drooping willow. But the long distance was nearly fatal—they were far too late.
The players who had never entered the institute had every advantage. Without question, Jian Yuntai and the others shared that enormous advantage. With just a stretch of his hand, he dug up a small wooden box from beneath a tree root. Inside was a tube of pale red liquid.
Turning around to speak, Jian Yuntai saw Fatty staring at him in shock: “You and that lunatic who launched the sun—did you two make some shady deal? Otherwise how come the moment you said ‘a blessing in disguise,’ he started pulling this stunt?”
After saying that, Fatty stared at the serum Jian Yuntai had dug up so easily, then blankly looked at the distant crowd who had gone mad killing each other over serum. He exclaimed, “It really was a blessing in disguise.”
At that moment, a furious shout came from behind them: “They dug up serum too!!!”
Turning around, they saw Jiang Jiu running toward them with two vials of serum, surrounded by a group of people in an encircling formation. Their eyes gleamed with greed and ruthlessness. If they had still held back for the sake of free treatment before, now—for the serum—they would stop at nothing.
