Mingzhu returned to her room with light footsteps. The room was quiet. Wei Tiande and Su Lan had already retired. The sky-blue silk canopy on her intricately carved bed was half lowered, and the jade hook swayed in the wind. Yuwen Chu laid on the bed, already asleep, with one boot kicked off and the other still on.
“What a foolish Wei Tiande. He doesn’t even know how to serve people properly. He deserves punishment.” Mingzhu wrinkled her nose and bent down to help Yuwen Chu remove the other boot. Then she exerted force to move his legs onto the bed. Seeing his flushed face and sweat-drenched temples, she took out a handkerchief to wipe him clean and called out to the attendants outside, “Bring a basin of hot water and bring the sobering soup as soon as it’s ready.”
After wiping away the sweat, Mingzhu leaned over to help Yuwen Chu remove his wine-stained outer robe. She didn’t expect him to be heavy despite his slim appearance. Just helping him turn over exhausted all her strength, leaving her sweating profusely. So she decided to sit by the bed and catch her breath. Unexpectedly, an arm suddenly reached out and hugged her waist, pulling her down.
Caught off guard, she fell onto Yuwen Chu’s body, and her nose hurt from the impact. Unable to bear it, she angrily said, “You’re pretending to sleep! Are you trying to exhaust me? You just pretended to be considerate, and the next moment, you’re finding ways to torment me.”
Yuwen Chu smiled with his eyes closed, revealing a faint and light smile. “You can let Su Lan and the others help.”
“I’m afraid you’ll scare them! You don’t know how frightening your sleeping posture is!” Mingzhu was very cautious when it came to things and people that belonged to her. Since he was her husband, it was best to avoid any contact with females, or she would feel uncomfortable.
“Is it really that scary? It’s rare for the Wangfei to be so brave that she can’t be scared.” Yuwen Chu opened his eyes and looked at her with a smile. He patted the space beside him and whispered, “Aren’t you tired? Come lie down with me.”
Mingzhu wrinkled her nose. “No way! You smell strongly of alcohol.” Although she said so, she didn’t leave. Instead, she grabbed the hem of his robe and said, “Turn over, I’ll help you take off this clothes.”
Yuwen Chu obediently turned over, raising his arms as if waiting for her to help him take off his sleeves like a child waiting for an adult to dress him.
“Lazy.” Mingzhu muttered softly as she helped him take off his outer robe, carefully smoothing it on the nearby hanger before unfastening his inner robe.
Su Lan brought in hot water and handed Mingzhu a towel. Mingzhu put down the curtain somewhat begrudgingly and stayed inside, wiping Yuwen Chu. Yuwen Chu squinted and smiled at her. “I never expected you to do this kind of thing, especially when you’re sick. You should let Su Lan do it.”
Mingzhu immediately widened her eyes and gritted her teeth. “Are you dreaming? If you harm me, that’s one thing, but if you dare to target my maidservant, it’s another story.”
Yuwen Chu stared at her for a while, then chuckled softly and said nothing more.
Mingzhu felt extremely uncomfortable with his laughter. She exerted a bit more force with her hands. “What are you laughing at?”
Yuwen Chu grabbed her hand and gently rubbed it, saying, “Nothing to laugh about, just thinking that your temperament is quite good.” If her possessiveness wasn’t so strong, if she didn’t keep such a tight grip on her things and people, she would probably have already handed him over to a group of maids to deal with. Even if he drank himself to death, it would be useless, just a show of affection. Take it slow, as long as she’s willing to get close to him, willing to take care of him, then it’s a good thing.
“No need to praise me, Your Highness. I naturally know how excellent I am. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be thinking of marrying me.” Mingzhu shamelessly praised herself, handing out the used handkerchief from the gap in the bed curtain and taking a clean one to wipe Yuwen Chu.
As she wiped down to his waist, she suddenly realized something was wrong. Little Yuwen Chu was showing off there, and it couldn’t be hidden even through his pants. Blushing, she threw the handkerchief onto Yuwen Chu’s chest and muttered, “You can’t even be honest when you’re drunk like this!”
Yuwen Chu remained silent, his gaze dark and focused solely on her. He reached for her hand again, intending to explore further down.
Mingzhu was too embarrassed, and afraid of being discovered by Su Lan and the others outside the curtain. She struggled a few times but couldn’t break free. Finally, she threw the handkerchief out and said in a low voice, “Why hasn’t the sobering soup arrived yet?”
As soon as she heard Su Lan and the others leave, Yuwen Chu pulled her down to his chest with force, but he didn’t do anything else. He just closed his eyes and gently stroked her hair, while his other hand tightly held her wrist, not allowing her to leave his side.
Mingzhu’s hand was tightly pressed against his abdomen, her face against his strong and smooth chest. Hearing his powerful heartbeat, she couldn’t help but recall the absurdity of their wedding night and the next morning in the bath. Her whole body flushed with heat, but she also felt a bit afraid. She whispered hesitantly, “I’m sick, and you’re drunk. It’s not very good.”
“What’s not very good?” Yuwen Chu’s voice sounded above her head, his chest vibrating slightly. His voice sounded different from usual, husky and low, but exceptionally charming.
Mingzhu hated his deliberate teasing, so she simply ignored him. Yuwen Chu didn’t expect her to answer and continued, “I understand. It’s not good now, but when you’re better and I’m not drunk, then it will be?”
Turning the conversation around! Mingzhu exclaimed, “No, that’s not what I meant!”
“What did you mean then?” The topic circled back. Mingzhu pounded his chest twice in anger. “I won’t tell you! You’re not a good person, you’re very bad!”
Yuwen Chu laughed, grabbed her hand, and pulled her in front of him. Lazily meeting her eyes, he whispered softly, “You’re shy. It’s rare.”
“Am I shy?” Mingzhu felt his eyes were deep and dark, with numerous tiny stars inside. They were profound and brilliant, easily captivating. She pretended to be tough, “I’ve seen it all before. Why should I be shy?”
“Then why are you blushing?” Yuwen Chu looked at her with interest. The faint scent of agarwood and alcohol mixed together, creating a unique fragrance that made hearts race and breathing difficult without realizing it.
“Who’s blushing? You’re drunk, your eyesight is off!” Mingzhu struggled a few times but couldn’t break free. She watched as his face got closer and closer, their breaths intertwining, even her fingertips feeling hot. Subconsciously, she wanted to escape.
Just then, Su Jin’s voice came from outside, “Your Highness, the sobering soup and the Wangye’s clothes have arrived. Should I bring them in now?”
“Bring them in.” Mingzhu felt guilty, thinking that Su Jin’s question hinted at their misdeeds inside. She said impatiently, “Drink the sobering soup first. If you vomit later, I won’t take care of you.”
