Back at the mansion, Zhu Changsheng and Li Quanxin were both standing outside the gate with big smiles. When they saw the carriage stop, they rushed forward to lift the curtain and set up stools, each vying to outdo the other, afraid the other would outshine them. Finally, Zhu Changsheng said, “I bid Your Highness and Madam greetings. Was the journey smooth?”
Li Quanxin added, “How could it not be smooth? The attendants I carefully selected are all clever and efficient.” Then he flattered Mingzhu, “Oh, how joyful one looks when there’s good news. Madam’s complexion has improved a lot!”
This was truly a rare sight. Mingzhu couldn’t help but laugh, and when Yuwen Chu glanced over, both Zhu Changsheng and Li Quanxin immediately stopped their little competition. Zhu Changsheng lowered his head in grievance, his shoulders and waist drooping, looking pitiful and regretful; Li Quanxin blinked, secretly observing Yuwen Chu and Mingzhu’s expressions, with an expression that said, “I’m very loyal, just tell me what you need, I’ll make sure you’re satisfied, just don’t leave me out.”
Mingzhu decided to give Li Quanxin a chance and pointed to Zheng Momo, who had just got off the back of the carriage, “This is Zheng Momo, who has been serving my mother. She was supposed to come with me to the mansion earlier, but there was some trouble at her house, so she was delayed for a few days. Li Quanxin, find her a sunny and spacious room and let her serve me closely in my room.”
Since the Momos in the Wangfei’s room were not in charge, this person must be the legendary stewardess! Moreover, she was a trusted stewardess by Madam Fu herself, so she couldn’t be underestimated. Li Quanxin looked at Zheng Momo and greeted her with a welcoming smile, “Please follow me, Momo, I’ll make sure you’re satisfied!”
Zhu Changsheng also looked at Zheng Momo, his eyes full of vigilance, which was hidden by the darkness.
Yuwen Chu didn’t care about these trivial matters and just said, “Let’s go in.”
Inside the room, everything was as usual. Although Xiangli and others were absent, under Li Quanxin’s management, there was no impact. The remaining maid, Su Ju, had already prepared hot water and other items, and after serving the two of them to wash up, she asked if they wanted dinner.
Neither of them had much appetite. Yuwen Chu said, “It’s been busy these past few days, everyone has worked hard. Let’s rest early tonight.” Then he said to Mingzhu, “Tomorrow morning, all the big small stewards in the mansion should come to greet you. You should rest early, I have some things to do in the study.”
Mingzhu escorted him to the door, deliberately straightening his cloak, and reminded him, “Don’t stay up too late. Even if you’re busy, nothing is urgent at this moment.”
Yuwen Chu responded and instructed Su Lan and others to make sure Mingzhu took her medicine properly. Mingzhu, feeling weak, fell asleep with her head on the pillow. She didn’t know when Yuwen Chu came back, but she vaguely remembered hearing some noise in her drowsiness, as if Su Lan was calling her, and then she heard Yuwen Chu saying something, and then her ears were quiet.
When she woke up, it was already bright outside, and Yuwen Chu was no longer by her side. Su Lan and Zheng Momo, along with a group of people, were waiting on the side to serve her. When they saw her wake up, they eagerly came forward to greet her, holding up clothes, jewelry, and accessories for her to choose from.
Mingzhu’s mood was quite good. She got up slowly to wash, then sat down at the dining table before asking, “Where’s His Highness?”
Su Lan reported, “His Highness has already eaten. He had something to attend to, so he asked Wangfei to eat by herself.
“The female members and stewards from the mansion will come to pay their respects to you later, and His Highness will also come by then.”
Mingzhu nodded and shifted her focus to the dining table. The breakfast was simple and light, consisting of a few kinds of nourishing congee accompanied by fresh and vibrant side dishes, which suited her post-illness appetite quite well.
“The breakfast this morning was prepared very appropriately. Li Quanxin deserves praise for it,” Mingzhu said, feeling satisfied as she put down her chopsticks and took a sip of tea to rinse her mouth.
Su Lan smiled and remarked, “That was arranged by His Highness before he left.”
Zheng Momo added at the right moment, “His Highness really cares for the Wangfei. He remembers even such small details.”
Mingzhu smiled and said, “So, as someone as careless as me, I need you, Momo, to remind me from time to time. In short, it’s about making His Highness happy and ensuring that everything in the mansion runs smoothly.”
Zheng Momo smiled knowingly, “The weather is nice today. How about I accompany Wangfei for a walk to aid digestion?”
Mingzhu offered her hand to Zheng Momo, “Let’s go.”
As they walked ahead, Su Lan and the others followed a few steps behind. Zheng Momo smiled, “Wangfei, ever since I followed you, my life belongs to you. Whatever you command, just say the word.” She understood that Mingzhu initially didn’t want her to come along, but then summoned her, so there must be some tricky people and matters that needed her attention. As a newcomer, she had to establish her position before Mingzhu. She didn’t know what kind of person the Wangfei, who was known for her arrogance, was, but people like her usually didn’t have much scheming, and straightforwardness was best.
Mingzhu said, “Momo is a clever person, and I like it when you ask me straightforwardly. You should know that a servant’s cleverness isn’t meant for their master, but should be shown when the master assigns them tasks. Otherwise, no matter how capable they are, the master won’t feel comfortable using them. Do you agree with this?”
“Wangfei is right, I’ll remember that,” Zheng Momo straightened up, somewhat surprised by Mingzhu’s behavior. First, she didn’t expect Mingzhu, who appeared spoiled and immature, to be so clear-minded. Second, Mingzhu indeed spoke straightforwardly, even when scolding her, but masters scolding servants didn’t need to beat around the bush. They had to make the servants fear them first before discussing kindness; otherwise, they might spoil the servants and cause them to betray or forget their gratitude.
Mingzhu continued, “In short, Momo, remember this: I have no shortage of clever people or loyal people, but I lack someone who has both. From now on, whenever there’s anything that needs to be negotiated with Zhu Changsheng, the chief steward of the front courtyard, it will be your responsibility. You must handle it well, and don’t allow any concessions. I’ll support you from behind in everything.”
That’s easy, Zheng Momo immediately thought of Zhu Changsheng’s round, smiling face, and breathed a sigh of relief, “Understood.”
Mingzhu teased her, “Momo doesn’t think I’m asking you to commit murder or arson, do you?”
“Who’s going to commit murder or arson?” Yuwen Chu and Li Quanxin approached from the front. Yuwen Chu glanced at Mingzhu’s face first, smiled, and said, “You look much better today than yesterday. Let’s go, it’s about time, they’re all waiting.”
Li Quanxin immediately wanted to step forward to help Mingzhu, “Wangfei, please walk this way. Let me serve you.” His fingers had just touched Mingzhu’s sleeve when Yuwen Chu frowned, “Li Quanxin, don’t you need to check if everyone else has arrived?”
