Chapter 365: Bad Things Ahead

Who leaked this news to the Great Empress Dowager, deliberately causing this misunderstanding?
Mingzhu was extremely distressed. It was too late to chase after Liang Youyi now. Even if she caught up with him, with Liang Youyi’s character and their slight acquaintance, he wouldn’t pay attention to her. She had to go herself.
“Prepare the carriage. I’m going to the palace.” Mingzhu couldn’t wait for Yuwen Chu to return to the palace. She hurriedly prepared to go out. The clothes she was wearing had just been changed to receive the gifts, so she couldn’t afford to lose face.
Zheng Momo was afraid that she would have an accident and refused to let her go out in such a situation. “His Highness said that it’s chaotic outside. It’s better for you not to go out casually these days. Even if you want to go to the palace, wait for His Highness to come back and accompany you. The Great Empress Dowager is an elder. It’s not like you have to go right away. Sooner or later won’t make a difference.”
Mingzhu was anxious, but just as she was about to ask Zheng Momo to leave, she suddenly felt uncomfortable in her lower abdomen. Her heart sank immediately. She hurriedly held Zheng Momo’s hand and sat down nearby, calming herself down and nervously calling Tang Chunlai to come and see her.
Tang Chunlai had been instructed by Yuwen Chu to closely monitor Mingzhu’s movements. When he heard that Mingzhu was uncomfortable, he hurried over as if flying. After checking Mingzhu’s pulse, he felt relieved. He first reassured Mingzhu, “Wangfei, you’re in good health, and your pregnancy is going well. It’s just a normal phenomenon in the early stages of pregnancy.” Then he warned her, “But in the first three months, the fetus hasn’t stabilized yet, so you shouldn’t be overly happy or sad, or overwork yourself. Since you’re feeling uncomfortable, you shouldn’t indulge yourself. Lie down and rest properly.”
Mingzhu had waited for this little bump for two lifetimes. She didn’t dare to be careless at all. She obediently laid down, comforting herself that she would visit the Great Empress Dowager to express her gratitude tomorrow, accompanied by Yuwen Chu.
Liang Youyi entered Changxin Palace smoothly and deliberately lightened his footsteps as he approached the main hall. He first listened carefully to the movements inside, then quietly asked Sang Shen, who was guarding outside the hall, “Where is Her Majesty?”
Sang Shen replied, “She’s currently reviewing County Prince Sien’s homework.”
Liang Youyi stood outside the door and sneaked a peek inside. He saw the Great Empress Dowager sitting at the desk, holding Yuwen Fu in her arms, teaching him how to write. There was a stack of memorials piled high on her left, and the pen Yuwen Fu was using was the ivory pen the Great Empress Dowager usually used to mark her comments.
This isn’t reviewing County Prince Sien’s homework at all! Clearly, it’s teaching County Prince Sien how to review memorials!
After pondering for a moment, Liang Youyi took two steps back and loudly announced, “Your servant Liang Youyi pays respects to Your Majesty!”
There was a rustling sound inside the hall, and after a while, the voice of the Great Empress Dowager echoed, “You’re back. Come in and talk.”
Liang Youyi walked in with his head bowed. He discreetly glanced around and saw Yuwen Fu had already been taken out of the Great Empress Dowager’s arms, standing obediently on the side, wide-eyed and curious, watching him.
Liang Youyi lowered his eyes and reported, “Your Majesty, the items rewarded to Ying Wangfei have been delivered to her. Ying Wangfei sends her regards and thanks to Your Majesty!”
The Great Empress Dowager’s eyes were full of anticipation. “Did she say anything else?”
Liang Youyi replied firmly, “No.”
The Great Empress Dowager fell silent, tightly pursing her lips. Yuwen Fu stood aside, seeing her trembling hand on the desk, knowing that the Great Empress Dowager was angry. He didn’t know what had happened, but he instinctively felt afraid. However, in the vast main hall, there was nowhere for him to hide.
Liang Youyi glanced sympathetically at him and whispered, “County Prince Sien should be served tea now.”
The Great Empress Dowager forced a smile. “Yes, I almost forgot. It’s been a while since you’ve seen your Royal Mother. Take these treasures I gave you a few days ago to her and have her keep them for you. Don’t come back tonight. Spend time with your Royal Mother. Just remember, don’t be late for lessons tomorrow, or you’ll see how I deal with you.”
Yuwen Fu was overjoyed, his eyes turning into crescent moons. But knowing he had to control his emotions, he composed himself and respectfully thanked and bid farewell to the Great Empress Dowager.
He hurried back to the rear hall, intending to have the wet nurse fetch the treasures he had recently received and take them back to make his Royal Mother happy. However, the wet nurse was not in the hall, nor were the palace maids who usually served there. Just as he was about to call out, he heard low voices coming from the small storage room where things were piled up.
He tiptoed over and saw a eunuch responsible for sweeping and the wet nurse talking in the storage room. “The Great Empress Dowager is about to collapse. She’s relying on medicine to hold on. When she has an attack, it’s terrifying. We don’t know when she’ll pass away. County Prince Sien is living a good life now, but when the time comes, it’ll be pitiful.”
The wet nurse’s voice sounded sharp and anxious, “You son of a turtle, what nonsense are you talking about? How dare you spread such rumors? Aren’t you afraid of losing your head?”
The eunuch said, “I’m not making this up. Would I say such things lightly? If it weren’t for you saving my life, I wouldn’t tell you this. Believe it or not! Don’t regret it when it’s too late!”
The wet nurse asked seriously, “Where did you hear this?”
“Shh…” The eunuch suddenly stopped talking. Yuwen Fu quickly hid behind the curtain, leaving only a small gap to peek through. He saw the eunuch come out, look around, then go back in and lower his voice, “That day, I was sweeping the floor and saw a nest of ants in the corner. You know, the Great Empress Dowager hates them the most, so I had to get rid of them. Just as I was squatting there dealing with the ants, I saw Ying Wang and Ying Wangfei walking over.”
He paused, lowering his voice even more, “Ying Wangfei said to Ying Wang that the Empress Dowager’s illness is serious. She saw it with her own eyes. It must have been a month ago, around the time when Eunuch Rong passed away.”
Yuwen Fu’s mind was suddenly in chaos. The scenes of those days were vividly remembered, and he felt scared again. Because the Great Empress Dowager took him to court that day, he almost got killed by Yuwen Bai. It was Sixth Uncle who saved him, and Aunt Mingzhu came to take care of him at night. He remembered all this clearly, but they said the Great Empress Dowager was going to die?
If his Royal Grandmother passed away, he, his Royal Mother, and his other brothers and sisters would all be in trouble! Yuwen Fu was frightened by this terrible news, and after a moment of hesitation, he turned around and ran frantically towards the main hall.
Hearing the noise, the eunuch and the wet nurse rushed out of the storage room in panic. “Who’s there?”
“It’s the county prince.” The wet nurse saw Yuwen Fu’s back clearly and breathed a sigh of relief, but then became very worried, “This could be bad! Did he overhear us?”
