Chapter 424: Compete (Part One)

I don’t need you to care! His words were insincere. If he really cared so much, why did he eat whatever Zhou Nushi gave him? Was he a pig? Shouldn’t he have dropped his chopsticks, blackened his face, and driven her away? Mingzhu rolled her eyes and stood up. “I’m full, Your Highness. Take your time.”
Yuwen Chu politely said, “Wangfei, take care.”
Mingzhu held her breath, feeling neither here nor there, and left with a sullen face.
Zhou Fuyan noticed that she was unhappy and looked nervously at Yuwen Chu, whispering, “Your Highness?”
Yuwen Chu said lightly, “Continue serving the dishes.”
“Oh!” Zhou Fuyan smiled through tears, becoming much more adept.
Zheng Momo and the others all looked confused. What was going on? Wangfei actually pushed the matter onto Zhou Fuyan. There wasn’t even an argument, so why the sulking?
Mingzhu, with an imposing manner, directed them, “Go and check if the carriage is ready. We’re leaving now.”
Everyone looked at the sky and fell silent. Winter nights were long, and it was still dark outside. Was she really going out at this hour? Was she in such a hurry?
“Why aren’t we hurrying?” Mingzhu glanced at the next room. Yuwen Chu and Zhou Fuyan were still inside. What were they eating that was taking so long? Didn’t Zhou Fuyan understand the rules? When the mistress was leaving, didn’t she know to come and see her off? If these two dared to do anything in her house, they couldn’t blame her for not giving them face!
Just as she was getting angry, Zhou Fuyan finally came out, smiling happily as she bowed to Mingzhu. “Allow this servant to assist Wangfei into the carriage.”
Yuwen Chu didn’t come out with her.
Being serious meant losing. Shameless man! His true colors were finally revealed! Mingzhu gritted her teeth, squeezing out a sentence through them, “Stay here and assist His Highness.”
Zhou Fuyan smiled meekly. “This servant will assist Wangfei.”
Mingzhu didn’t refuse. She just went along with her outside.
Yuwen Chu stood at the window watching her leave, silently counting. With her explosive temper, even if she tried to endure, she couldn’t hold it in for long. He thought that once he counted to ten, she would come back to confront him, asking him why he didn’t send her off.
“One, two, three… ten.” When he counted to ten, Mingzhu indeed stopped. His heart started pounding wildly. He hoped she would turn back and come to him, and then he wouldn’t be angry with her anymore, just going along with whatever she wanted. However, Mingzhu just paused for a moment before continuing forward without looking back.
Truly heartless.
She could really do it, leaving without a second thought. Even the unreasonable jealousy and possessiveness during their honeymoon period, she could endure. Despite her wild nature, she was now being restrained by cold logic. Indeed, as people grew older, their hearts hardened, whether toward others or themselves.
Yuwen Chu sighed and rubbed his forehead. He looked at Xiangli. “Go and bring Wangfei back.”
“What?” Xiangli was still trying to figure out what was going on between Wangfei and His Highness. Suddenly, she was assigned such a difficult task and was left dumbfounded.
Yuwen Chu grew impatient, looking at her coldly.
“Yes,” Xiangli hurriedly chased after her.
Mingzhu felt like her legs were weighed down with sandbags, every step feeling difficult. However, she told herself she had to keep moving forward. To walk away was to win. Enduring what she couldn’t change would help her win what seemed impossible.
According to Yuwen Chu, he hadn’t done anything wrong, at least not yet. But Mr. Meng had awakened her from her illusions. Today it was Jiang Shanshan, who knows who it might be tomorrow? To ascend to that position, the road ahead was long and uncertain. Who knew what temptations and necessities she might encounter?
Being mutually in love and growing old together was certainly wonderful. But protecting oneself and one’s heart with rationality was even better. Otherwise, if she got angry or hurt herself over trivial matters like this, how would she save and protect her family? How would she care for the child in her womb?
So, she had to walk away. Being soft-hearted wasn’t a good thing. The more she thought about it, the more she felt she had truly grown.
“Wangfei, Wangfei!” Xiangli caught up, panting, and said eagerly, “His Highness is worried about you, please go back. Look, it’s not even daylight yet, and the roads are still icy.”
Mingzhu said lightly, “Don’t worry, I’ll take the carriage.” If he wanted her to stay, didn’t he know to come himself? There was no sincerity in this!
Xiangli was at a loss. She looked to Zheng Momo and Su Lan for help, but both pretended not to see her, looking away.
Zhou Fuyan glanced around, smiling, “Perhaps His Highness still has something to tell the Wangfei.”
Before Zhou Fuyan could finish her sentence, Mingzhu gave her a cold glare, which immediately silenced her. When immortals fought, lesser beings suffered. After finally coming out, she didn’t want to get involved in their mess.
“His Highness has already said everything he needed to,” Mingzhu continued walking. Yuwen Chu couldn’t resist sending someone to call her earlier, making her feel like she had won a small victory. Therefore, she felt particularly spirited, striding confidently.
Xiangli chased after her for a while, trying to say nice things, but getting no response, she had no choice but to sullenly return to report to Yuwen Chu.
Yuwen Chu felt thoroughly frustrated and aggrieved. He felt unjustly accused, thinking he had done nothing wrong. Even if Mr. Meng had done something unforgivable behind his back, he had explained it. Why was she still so unyielding? Why was she making him feel nauseous and neglected so early in the morning? What did she want?
Seeing his genuinely unpleasant expression, Xiangli said, “I’ve heard that women become especially strange-tempered when they’re pregnant. Even a small matter can make them blow things out of proportion and make them angrier the more they think about it.”
“Really?” Yuwen Chu finally felt a bit relieved. That made sense.
Xiangli nodded vigorously. “It’s true.”
Yuwen Chu sat silently for a moment and then ordered Wei Tiande, “Go and wake up Mr. Meng! Let him accompany me on a trip outside the city.” He didn’t intend to go send Mingzhu off. Since they were going to act, they might as well go all the way. This was an opportunity to straighten out Mr. Meng.
Wei Tiande looked at the sky uncertainly. “Your Highness, it might snow heavily.”
“It’s precisely because I know it’s going to snow heavily that I need to go out.” Yuwen Chu said calmly. Mr. Meng was someone he respected, so he couldn’t openly blame him for doing something inappropriate. But he also wanted Mr. Meng to know his dissatisfaction and unhappiness, to make sure Mr. Meng wouldn’t act on his own again in the future.
Wei Tiande could only go out, muttering to himself. During last night’s discussions, His Highness hadn’t slept until the early hours of the morning, while his advisors were still discussing and preparing documents for the aftermath. It was already past five in the morning before they could even think of sleeping. At this moment, Mr. Meng might have just closed his eyes. To wake him up at this hour and make him go to the outskirts of the city in the wind and snow, wasn’t it intentionally troubling him?
