The Wusun Princess scrutinized Yuwen Cong warily. “I heard you want to see me? Who are you?”
Yuwen Cong smiled. “Of course, I’m someone who can help Wangfei.”
The Wusun Princess smiled faintly, lifted the cup of purple cedar cup in her hand, took a sip, and said indifferently, “Many people have said that to me. But they don’t even know what I want.”
“But this is the first time I’ve said such a thing, and I know what Wangfei wants.” Yuwen Cong glanced at the cedar cup, raised an eyebrow slightly. No wonder there had been no good news from this couple. But what did that have to do with him? All he cared about was holding Yuwen You and Fu Mingzhu in his hands, making a great contribution, and then dealing with Zhu Wenhan before returning to the Northern Territory.
The Wusun Princess fell silent for a moment and said, “You’re the one who lent money to our Highness, right?”
“Yes. So when I say I can help Wangfei, it’s definitely not a lie.” Yuwen Cong had a long conversation with the Wusun Princess and handed her a letter. “I know Wangfei has a way to communicate with the king of Wusun. Please pass this letter on to him.”
The Wusun Princess accepted the letter in silence and asked, “I heard your esteemed Madam came with you…”
“That’s Jiang Shanshan, not my wife.” Yuwen Cong smiled disdainfully. “I brought her here to present her to Wangfei.”
The Wusun Princess’s heart skipped a beat, almost losing her composure. “Present her to me?”
“Yes, doesn’t Wangfei want her?” Jiang Shanshan had no value to him anymore, so he might as well give her to the Wusun Princess to play with, just barely fulfilling a favor.
“What use do I have for her?” The Wusun Princess took a sip of water, her expression indifferent. “Our Highness is sentimental. If I treat her as an honored guest, I won’t be satisfied. If I’m not polite to her, our Highness won’t be happy. So the guest is causing me trouble.”
Yuwen Cong understood her meaning. She wanted him to kill Jiang Shanshan so she could show her favor and become friends with him.
“Alright.” Yuwen Cong smiled and performed a Wusun courtesy to the Wusun Princess, then smiled and left. “Wangfei, wait for my good news.”
The Wusun Princess lifted her chin arrogantly and watched Yuwen Cong leave. Jiang Shanshan deserved to die.
When Yuwen Cong met Jiang Shanshan, he smiled and said, “The Wusun Princess wants me to kill you. I really want to make friends with the Wusun king, so I agreed.”
Jiang Shanshan looked up in astonishment. “Fifth Master, you can’t do this to me! I still know a lot of things.” Did he not want her to know those things anymore? She knew a lot. Why were these men different from what she thought they should be? Shouldn’t they all be driven by self-interest? Why did everyone have to be against her?
“I’m not interested. You’re disloyal to me, so you’re useless to me, and you’re an enemy who puts me in danger. People like you, who waver between Qin and Chu, are the most contemptible type to me in this life.” Yuwen Cong showed a row of white teeth and enjoyed the despair in Jiang Shanshan’s eyes. “Two choices, one is to go to the palace and be bait to lure Fu Mingzhu, the other is for me to kill you right away.”
Jiang Shanshan remained silent for a long time, her eyes revealing a fierce light. “I’ll go to the palace as bait.”
“Let’s see if you have the ability to survive.” Yuwen Cong burst into laughter. He really wanted to have a big battle with Yuwen Chu. Let’s see who would have the last laugh.
The light snow soon melted, and the weather cleared up, truly cloudless, with a clear blue sky. The plum blossoms were about to bloom, emitting a faint fragrance. Mingzhu picked a half-bloomed plum blossom, held it in front of her son’s chubby little nose, and let him sniff. “Zhuangzhuang, does it smell good?”
Zhuangzhuang sneezed loudly, blowing out a bubble of snot, which landed on the petal of the plum blossom, crystal clear. Mingzhu was stunned for a moment, then burst into laughter, took out a handkerchief to wipe Zhuangzhuang’s nose, and affectionately pinched his little nose. “My son, you’re really good at ruining the mood. Only you can do such an inelegant thing.”
“It’s like mother, like son.” Yuwen Chu walked over with his hands behind his back, although he had a smile on his face, he exuded a sense of majesty and dignity that made the maidservants and eunuchs serving on the side dare not look directly at him, bowing their heads to salute one after another.
Mingzhu could clearly see this, and couldn’t help feeling a little proud. Over the past year or so, Yuwen Chu had indeed become more majestic. This kind of majesty wasn’t something he put on, but something that naturally emanated from him, often revealed inadvertently in his gaze, expression, and actions, instilling awe in people.
This was probably the so-called aura of an emperor, right? Her man was the best. The more Mingzhu thought about it, the happier she became. She trotted over, handed Zhuangzhuang to Yuwen Chu to hold, and hung on his arm, whispering to him affectionately, “Your Highness, you’re getting more and more handsome.”
Even though Yuwen Chu had thick skin, he still felt a little embarrassed in front of so many maidservants and eunuchs. He pretended to glare at her and said, “Speak properly!” Then he lowered his voice so no one could hear and said, “I also think you’re getting more and more beautiful.”
“Does Your Highness have any good news for me?” Mingzhu was ecstatic. After all, her own Highness was the most considerate, knowing what she liked to hear.
Yuwen Chu smiled. “My eldest brother-in-law has news. He’s already prepared to return. The letter was written a month ago, so he must be almost inside our territory by now.”
This was really good news! Mingzhu laughed heartily. “That’s great! So, what about that matter?”
She was referring to Fu Mingda’s persuasion of the Wusun king to form an alliance with Yuwen Chu. Yuwen Chu smiled. “My eldest brother-in-law has a good eloquence and is steady and upright in his character, very trustworthy. The Wusun king values him highly.”
So tactful, you could’ve just said it directly.” Mingzhu gave Yuwen Chu a glance and proudly showed him: “Zhuangzhuang is teething!”
“Is he?” Yuwen Chu sat down on a stone bench nearby, cradled Zhuangzhuang in his arms, and made funny faces to make Zhuangzhuang laugh. Zhuangzhuang loved to laugh, especially when someone played with him. He laughed heartily and revealed his pink gums.
Mingzhu and Yuwen Chu immediately took the opportunity to lean in close together and examine Zhuangzhuang’s lower teeth. There were two small bulges on the pink gums, already faintly showing white. Mingzhu proudly showed off to Yuwen Chu: “The maidservants say these teeth are coming in quite early.”
Yuwen Chu smiled gently as he looked at Zhuangzhuang, his expression tender, proud, and full of love, but he didn’t join in Mingzhu’s praises.
Seeing him maintaining his stern demeanor, Mingzhu couldn’t resist teasing him: “Your Highness, don’t you want to touch Zhuangzhuang’s little teeth? This is his first tooth. It feels really good.”
