Luo Jiuqian’s wife choked up and gestured to Mingzhu a few times, then let her son Pei Si bow and salute Mingzhu.
Luo Peisi saluted and, very sensibly, explained his mother’s gestures to Mingzhu: “My mother says, thank you for your concern, but my father’s condition is very bad…”
Here, his mother couldn’t help it anymore and rushed in to see Tang Chunlai for treatment. Luo Peisi asked Mingzhu, “Wangfei, are you the Wangfei? I heard you’re very capable and powerful. Can’t you help my father not die? My mother and I can’t live without him.”
Children’s words were powerful, indeed. Mingzhu suddenly felt a surge of sorrow, tears almost welling up in her eyes. She squatted down, looked Luo Peisi in the eye, and said softly, “I promised His Highness to do everything I can to help you all, and now I promise you the same. We brought the best doctor and medicine. Let’s first hear what he has to say, okay?”
Luo Peisi looked at Mingzhu for a moment, then suddenly whispered, “My dad won’t make it, will he?”
Mingzhu’s heart ached. She couldn’t imagine the same thing happening to Zhuang Zhuang. Just thinking about it made it hard to breathe. She touched Luo Peisi’s head and solemnly assured him again, “I will do my best. Let’s all work together, do our best, okay?”
Luo Peisi whispered, “I’m too young. My parents always say I can’t do anything. What do you think I can do, Wangfei?”
Mingzhu handed him over to Su Mei: “We brought some things over. Peisi can help them place things properly. Such as where to put firewood and charcoal, where to put rice, oil, and eggs, and also blankets.”
“I know that.” Luo Peisi trotted off, leading Su Mei and others to place the items.
Since Luo Jiuqian was a man, Mingzhu couldn’t barge in, so she could only stand outside and wait quietly. A servant who accompanied her brought in a chair, “Wangfei, please sit here. Hot tea will be served shortly.” Su Mei also handed her a hand warmer.
Mingzhu shook her head, “Take it back.”
Someone inside was seriously injured and dying. She came specifically to visit and offer condolences, but sitting outside drinking tea while they were suffering inside was inappropriate. If she were Luo’s wife, she might have been so angry that she would have swept them out with a broom.
Life and death were fated. She probably couldn’t save Luo Jiuqian’s life, but she could show the most sincere and humble attitude, not letting the deceased leave with resentment and not letting the living hold grudges. This was the responsibility bestowed upon her by the identity of Ying Wangfei. She had to do her best. Besides, she really sympathized and felt sad.
Mingzhu stood in the yard for almost an hour until her hands and feet were cold. Zhang Huan came out and called her, “Wangfei, Luo Jiuqian wants to see you.”
Mingzhu looked inquiringly at Zhang Huan. Zhang Huan sighed and shook his head lightly at her: “It’s no use.”
Although she had anticipated it, Mingzhu still couldn’t avoid this heaviness and sadness. She followed Zhang Huan into the room and saw the young man lying on the bed.
Luo Jiuqian laid on the bed, his face pale, but his eyes were unnaturally bright. He had been staring at Mingzhu all along, his hand raised to point at his sobbing wife beside him, and then urgently looking outside. A guard brought Luo Peisi in and placed him in front of him.
Luo Jiuqian held Luo Peisi tightly, staring at Mingzhu, his eyes bulging as if he wanted to speak, but his throat had been stabbed, and he couldn’t make a sound.
Mingzhu walked over, placed her hand on Luo Peisi’s trembling shoulder, and said firmly and clearly, “Don’t worry, I will treat them kindly, let them have peaceful days, let Luo Peisi grow up safely, without hunger or cold, able to study if he wants to, able to learn martial arts if he wants to.”
Luo Jiuqian looked at his wife again, and Mingzhu added, “I won’t let anyone bully them.”
Luo Jiuqian smiled, sighed softly, and closed his eyes.
The room was filled with cries, and Mingzhu’s nose felt sour as she comforted Mrs. Luo, “Please accept my condolences.”
Mrs. Luo kept crying loudly, leaning on Luo Jiuqian, her voice hoarse, while Peisi also cried uncontrollably. Zhang Huan was worried that Mingzhu might be frightened, so he whispered to her, “Your Highness, please go back first. We’ll take care of things here.”
Mingzhu wasn’t afraid. She had a clear conscience, so how could she fear the deceased Luo Jiuqian? However, it wasn’t appropriate to persuade them any further. After all, there was no way to bring Luo Jiuqian back to life. So she went outside to find a place to sit, instructing the people she brought with her to set up the mourning hall and prepare the coffin, burial clothes, and burial site.
Neighbors who heard the cries from the Luo family came to inquire. When they saw Mingzhu and the others, they were scared and retreated. Mingzhu instructed Su Mei to intercept them and invited two women who were familiar with Mrs. Luo to come over. She kindly asked them to help take care of Mrs. Luo and her son, saying, “Neighbors are better than relatives. You two have been living with them day and night. If they encounter any difficulties in the future, please help them and inform Ying Wang Mansion. After all, Mrs. Luo is not well, and Peisi is still young.”
The two women understood that apart from asking for their help in taking care of the Luo family, Mingzhu also meant to indicate that Ying Wang Mansion was their support. They immediately expressed their admiration and sympathy, promising to comfort Mrs. Luo or assist in arranging Luo Jiuqian’s funeral. Soon, the situation was under control.
By the time Mrs. Luo regained her composure, the funeral arrangements were well underway. Mingzhu left a capable person in charge and quietly left for the next household.
It was inevitable that people would inquire about Mingzhu’s true identity. Peisi, crying, exclaimed, “She’s Ying Wangfei.”
Some people were skeptical, thinking, “Can a Wangfei dress so plainly and simply?” But when they thought of Mingzhu’s appearance and demeanor, they believed it again. They praised the Ying Wangfei for her thoughtfulness, humility, and beauty, saying she was truly a rare virtuous and kind-hearted woman. Then, others praised Ying Wang, believing that he was also very good. They thought that the Wangfei’s actions were probably approved and participated in by Ying Wang. They also felt that although Luo Jiuqian was unfortunate, he was fortunate to be on the right side.
As the conversation veered off, some recalled Mingzhu’s charitable deeds at the Great Temple, and how Yuwen Chu contributed his own money to disaster relief, despite facing criticism. Ultimately, they concluded that the Ying Wang couple were good people.
Mingzhu was unaware of the subsequent events. She visited five or six families in succession, all of whom had deceased members returned home for funerals. Mingzhu courteously offered condolences, provided funeral items and financial support, paid respects to the deceased, comforted their families, and addressed any immediate difficulties they faced.
As dusk approached, Mingzhu returned to the mansion.
Yuwen Chu had sent Wei Tiande to the gate to check on Mingzhu several times. When he heard that she had returned, he went to see her. “You don’t have to work so hard. There’s always more to be done,” he said.
