Fu Mingcheng whispered, “Ying Wang is one step away from that position. If he can’t bear it and rushes in, he can immediately imprison the Great Empress Dowager and let us die without burial. If I don’t tell him this way, how can I persuade him to endure it?”
Liao Guang looked back at Yuwen Chu’s proud figure and said uncertainly, “Can he endure it?” One step forward was the position of Emperor, how many people in the world could endure it?
Fu Mingcheng said, “I don’t know, but I bet he can endure it. He’s ambitious but cherishes his feathers.” Yuwen Chu had endured so many years for the sake of marrying Fu Mingzhu; now he could definitely endure it. Reputation was still important for someone who wanted to accomplish great things.
Liao Guang said, “Ah, when it rains, it pours. Originally, we couldn’t control this matter. Let’s go to Zhaoyang Palace first and carry out the Great Empress Dowager’s orders.”
As the two walked away, Mu Gugu came out and conveyed the Great Empress Dowager’s orders, saying softly, “Your Highness, please go back. I will take care of Wangfei.”
Yuwen Chu nodded and reached into the sedan chair to lift Mingzhu out. “Are we taking her to where she used to live?”
“Yes,” Mu Gugu replied. Just as she spoke, she saw Yuwen Chu stride forward with Mingzhu in his arms. She hurriedly called a few palace maids to follow, watching as Yuwen Chu skillfully entered Mingzhu’s former residence and placed her on the bed.
Yuwen Chu brushed away the hair on Mingzhu’s face and said, “Please ask a trustworthy physician to come and check on her.”
Mu GuGu said, “I’ve already sent someone just now. Your Highness, are you planning to leave? Is there any news from Consort Min?”
Yuwen Chu shook his head. “I want to be alone with her for a while.”
Mu Gugu silently led the palace maids out and quietly arranged for hot water, clothes, charcoal basins, and other items. Then she stood at the door, lost in thought, thinking about many things.
Yuwen Chu hugged Mingzhu tightly in his arms. He almost lost her just now. He had been too busy before, too worried to care. As he walked along this road, he felt more and more frightened.
Suddenly, he heard Mingzhu let out a sigh and curse through her teeth, “D*mn Yuwen Cong, I’m going to kill you!”
Yuwen Chu was startled, then smiled, “You’re awake?”
“Ah.” Mingzhu responded, only then realizing she had been rescued. She stared at Yuwen Chu for a moment, then grabbed his ear forcefully a few times. With a puzzled expression, she said, “Oh dear, I must be dreaming. Why doesn’t it hurt when I pinch my own ear? It must be a dream.”
Yuwen Chu, feeling a mix of apology and relief, frowned, “You’re pinching my ear, of course it doesn’t hurt for you. Stop pretending, I know you’re faking it.”
Mingzhu refused to admit that she was pretending, looking puzzled, “Did I pull your ears? Did I really pull Your Highness’s ears? Why would I pull Your Highness’s ears?”
“Why? Of course, you’re blaming me for not rescuing you in time. Alright, you’ve suffered enough, almost lost your life. You have the right to vent your anger at me, pull wherever you want, but there’s one condition, no bringing up old grudges after this.” Yuwen Chu patiently removed his helmet and leaned his head towards Mingzhu.
Mingzhu felt like even though he allowed her to punish and scold him, it seemed like she was the one at a disadvantage. After thinking for a moment, she decisively hugged Yuwen Chu’s head and kissed him on the forehead, murmuring, “I’m afraid you’ll bring up old grudges.”
She had been kidnapped by Yuwen Cong for so long, and so many people had seen it. There would definitely be rumors in the future. It depended on whether he remained resolute and unaffected. But if rumors spread, she didn’t care. She had seen everything in her life anyway.
Yuwen Chu understood her meaning and stared into her eyes earnestly, whispering, “Rest assured.”
Mingzhu muttered, “Rest assured about what? Your Highness, don’t you want to know what I’ve been through?”
Yuwen Chu smiled, “Aren’t you tired? You’ll tell me when you want to.”
Mingzhu suddenly remembered Imperial Consort Min and Huayang Wangfei, “Have they been found?”
Yuwen Chu’s smile faded, “Not yet.”
Mingzhu struggled to sit up, “Quick, search everywhere in their disappeared room. There should be a secret passage.”
Yuwen Chu pushed her back down, “Take care of yourself first. I’ll handle everything else.” After saying this, he put on his helmet and turned to leave. When he reached the door, he turned back to look at Mingzhu and whispered, “I want you to know that I didn’t come to rescue you late because I didn’t want to, but because I couldn’t.”
Mingzhu nodded, “I understand. Go handle your affairs with peace of mind.”
Yuwen Chu strode out, and Mu Gugu followed, commanding the palace maids to help Mingzhu bathe and change into clean clothes. Mingzhu suddenly felt pain all over her body, as if her bones were about to fall apart. She wanted to lie down and sleep well, but she also felt incredibly hungry. She had to ask Mu Gugu for food, “Do you have anything to eat? I’m starving.”
Mu Gugu smiled, “Of course, I’ll have someone bring it to you. What do you want to eat?”
Mingzhu wanted to eat everything but decided not to trouble Mu Gugu, “Anything will do.”
Mu Gugu had some hot porridge and a few dishes brought over, “Start with this to fill your stomach.”
Mingzhu had never felt so hungry before. She picked up the chopsticks eagerly and started eating quickly. Mu Gugu watched her with a smile for a while before giving some quiet instructions to the palace maids and then left. The Great Empress Dowager needed her, so she had to attend to her.
Outside the main hall, Mu Gugu saw Yuwen Chu and Fu Zifei talking quietly in the shadow of the corridor. She frowned and deliberately made some noise. Fu Zifei left in a panic, while Yuwen Chu stepped out from the shadow, looking calm, “Is Mingzhu’s appetite okay?”
Mu Gugu said, “It’s alright. She’s still eating now. It’s just that the areas where the ropes bound her are quite badly injured. We’ll need to apply ointment and massage later.” Changing the subject, she asked, “Has Your Highness met with the Great Empress Dowager?”
Yuwen Chu replied, “Yes.” The Great Empress Dowager originally refused to see him, but she suddenly changed her mind after he left Mingzhu’s place and had Mei Yuxi summon him.
Mu Gugu continued, “Then, does Your Highness know that the Great Empress Dowager intends to declare County Prince Yanping as the Emperor?”
“I know.” Yuwen Chu’s face remained calm, unreadable. “The Great Empress Dowager ordered me to oversee the mourning ceremonies for the late Emperor. I have to go busy myself with that. Regarding Prime Minister Fu’s injury, please keep it from Mingzhu for now.”
