“Oh, he’s angry,” said Li Shumei, who had come to visit Mingzhu. Seeing this, she laughed, “Such a small child already knows how to be angry.”
Zhuangzhuang immediately reached for Li Shumei, ignoring Mingzhu.
Mingzhu, half laughing, half crying, felt a twinge of heartache. Seeing Li Shumei’s hesitation, she said, “He wants you to hold him. Go ahead.”
Li Shumei happily took Zhuangzhuang and pointed to Mingzhu, “Sweet Zhuangzhuang, this is your mother. You’ve been missing her, haven’t you? Mother had things to take care of and couldn’t come back sooner, but she missed you too.”
Zhuangzhuang buried his head in Li Shumei’s arms, not making a sound or looking back. Mingzhu’s eyes reddened. She took Li Shumei inside, sat on the couch, and took the egg custard from Wet Nurse Lin, gently coaxing, “This egg custard smells delicious. If Zhuangzhuang doesn’t eat it, someone else will.” She tapped the spoon against the bowl, and Zhuangzhuang peeked back, drooling.
Mingzhu felt overjoyed, all her worries vanished. She gently pressed her forehead against Zhuangzhuang’s and whispered, “Good baby, Mother loves you.”
Zhuangzhuang frowned slightly, his expression full of emotion.
Li Shumei laughed, “This child is so clever, as if he understands everything.”
Mingzhu held back her laughter and patiently fed Zhuangzhuang the egg custard. After he finished, he reached for her. Mingzhu quickly hugged him, kissing him repeatedly. Whether he understood or not, she whispered about recent events, “Mother met bad people and wanted to come back to you but couldn’t. My Zhuangzhuang is the best and most understanding. Mother missed you so much…”
Li Shumei quietly left, instructing the servants to take good care of Mingzhu and her child. She inspected Mingzhu’s quarters, ensuring everything was in order before leaving.
Zhuang Zhuang quietly nestled in Mingzhu’s arms, his furry little head rubbing against her chin, melting her heart. Holding him, Mingzhu’s eyes welled up with tears. For the sake of her dear Zhuang Zhuang, she was determined to eliminate the rift that Jiang Shanshan had caused between her and Yuwen Chu. She would never let Zhuang Zhuang suffer any grievances.
It seemed that once Zhuangzhuang was in his mother’s arms, he quickly fell asleep. Mingzhu didn’t want to put him down, so she continued holding him. The familiar scent of the room brought her comfort, and she soon felt drowsy. She decided to lie down on the bed with Zhuangzhuang, not even bothering to change out of her clothes, and fell asleep.
Su Lan came in, carefully covered the mother and son with a blanket, and quietly left. Outside the door, she informed Fu Mingzheng and Huayang Wang, “The Wangfei just fell asleep with Young Master Zhuang.”
Fu Mingzheng didn’t want Huayang Wang to disturb Mingzhu, “She’s been through a lot these past few days. If it’s not a confidential matter, could you let me convey your message to her?”
Huayang Wang simply wanted to express his loyalty and get closer to Mingzhu. Since Fu Mingzheng said this, insisting further would be inappropriate. He replied, “There’s nothing confidential.”
Despite being asleep, Mingzhu was restless and heard them. She got up and invited Huayang Wang and Fu Mingzheng in.
Huayang Wang explained what happened at Jade Palace, “…That’s the gist of it. Luckily, my sixth brother was unharmed; otherwise, it would have been our fault.”
Indeed, that throne is built upon a foundation of corpses, a truly perilous path. She had only been separated from Yuwen Chu for a short while, and he had already encountered such danger. Mingzhu clenched her fists in fear, calming herself before asking, “It’s a good thing Seventh Sister-in-law was rescued, but why would Seventh Brother say such a thing? Clearly, it was Zhongshan Wang and Yuwen Cong, the traitors, who plotted the assassination. What does it have to do with Seventh Brother and Seventh Sister-in-law?”
Huayang Wang replied, “No, Sixth Sister-in-law, please let me explain in detail. Yuanyuan was drugged and placed in the Jade Palace among corpses to serve as bait. Yuwen Cong arranged assassins inside to lure my Sixth Brother there and ambush him. If it weren’t for Yang Dianjun and He Zhengtu’s loyalty in protecting him, my wife and I would have been eternal sinners.”
Yuanyuan was Huayang Wang’s wife’s nickname.
Mingzhu finally understood. Huayang Wang was worried that Yuwen Chu would despise them for this incident, so he sought her out to profess their loyalty and innocence indirectly. She sighed inwardly. In this royal family, there was truly no kinship. Yuwen Chu had not even ascended to the throne yet, and Huayang Wang was already like this. Once he did become emperor, he would likely be even more isolated.
Thinking it over, she earnestly replied for Yuwen Chu, “You worry too much. His Highness doesn’t think that way. You are his brother and should understand him better than others.”
“I will remember that. Thank you for the advice,” Huayang Wang said, feeling a bit ashamed. His relationship with Yuwen Chu had only grown closer after Mingzhu saved his wife last winter, so their bond wasn’t deep. It was natural to have doubts during crises.
“If you came just for this, there’s no need to worry,” Mingzhu said seriously. “These are troubled times. I won’t keep you any longer. Just remember, your generation of brothers is dwindling. Not many are left. Linan Wang is always at odds with us, and Fu Wang is unreliable. Only you can be a trusted ally to His Highness. United brothers are strong. Please, continue to support him.”
After saying this, she solemnly bowed to Huayang Wang, “I ask this of you.”
Huayang Wang, who had come with ulterior motives, felt very embarrassed. “Sixth Sister-in-law, what are you saying? I live and die for my sixth brother. I will follow his orders without question.”
Mingzhu laughed heartily, “You are brothers, not a married couple. Why talk about living and dying for each other? Tell this to your wife. Go back to her now. She must need you after what happened.”
“Yuwen Cong hasn’t been caught. He’s cunning and unpredictable. Be very careful,” Huayang Wang advised before leaving, satisfied. Mingzhu watched him go, then turned to see Fu Mingzheng looking at her with admiration. She touched her face, “Why are you smiling, Fourth Brother?”
Fu Mingzheng replied, “I’m happy for you. I never thought you could be so wise.”
