The No. 1 Hunfen King in the Entire Server [Interstellar] Chapter 26

Antique Codex (5)

Lilith?

Lin Jing found the name somewhat familiar. Then he remembered—it was from a post on the forums. It mentioned the top ten scorers in Survivor, noting Lilith as the only female among them.

The corners of Xu Wanzhi’s lips curled slightly, though the smile didn’t reach his eyes. “I don’t know her.”

Elena smiled. “Really? But you two look very alike, especially your eyes.”

Ke Lingxuan froze at the mention of the name, her eyes lighting up with excitement. “Are you talking about Lilith, the one from the Council Chief’s family? Oh my god, she’s my idol!”

Elena replied, “Yes.”

Ke Lingxuan gasped, “Oh my god! You know Lilith?”

Elena casually flicked her curled hair back and smiled. “I wouldn’t say know her—we’ve just crossed paths a few times.”

As soon as she said this, the group’s expressions shifted subtly. After all, meeting Lilith even a handful of times wasn’t something just anyone could claim.

Lilith was born into the ancient and prestigious Osmond family, an imperial noble house. The family’s superior genetics endowed its members with exceptional abilities. Besides the current head, who served as the Council Chief, the family had members occupying significant positions across research institutes, the military, and the judiciary. Lilith herself, with her extraordinary mental power, was adored even within her illustrious family. She was the undisputed darling of the interstellar age, attending only the most elite gatherings.

The plump girl snorted, clearly skeptical. “Anyone can brag.”

Although no one else said anything, they silently agreed with her.

If Elena truly were nobility, how would she have ended up in the same place as them?

Elena shook her head, offering no explanation, and simply smiled.

Karl, who was also intrigued by Lilith, found common ground with Ke Lingxuan and chimed in, “I saw a photo of Lilith in the newspapers—she’s stunning. The reporters were chasing after her, and not even her bodyguards could hold them off. Frustrated, she simply picked up her skirt and leapt off the aerial platform. The photo they captured was of her mid-jump.”

Ke Lingxuan nodded fervently, her expression that of a starstruck fan. “Yes, yes! That’s the photo that made me fall in love with her. Lilith is absolutely gorgeous—golden curls, violet eyes. She must’ve just come from a banquet, still wearing her gown and high heels. The moment she impatiently jumped off the platform, my heart nearly jumped out of my chest.”

Suddenly, she paused, sneaking a glance at Xu Wanzhi. Hesitantly, she said, “Wan, your eyes… they really do look like Lilith’s.”

Though the pupils were different—one violet, the other black—the shape of the eyes was strikingly similar.

The eyelids were thin, with a subtle upward tilt at the corners, exuding a cool and distant air whether lowered or raised.

Thinking more deeply, Ke Lingxuan realized that both Xu Wanzhi and Lilith gave off a similar unapproachable aura. Lilith’s had an added touch of arrogance, while Xu Wanzhi’s carried a hint of nonchalance.

Xu Wanzhi merely smiled faintly at the mention of Lilith, offering no further response.

After dinner, Lin Jing returned to his room and started studying the creatures of the Ordovician period.

Unlike the tiny organisms of the Cambrian era, the Ordovician period saw the emergence of many large predators. Among them was the era’s dominant predator, the giant nautiloid. This creature evolved from a soft-bodied ancestor that Lin Jing had just photographed. Who would’ve guessed that once it developed a shell, it would rise to the top of the food chain?

The bathroom was adjacent to the room. After washing up, Xu Wanzhi casually dried his dripping black hair with a towel.

Lin Jing was still making notes, leaning against the bed and mumbling, “Giant eurypterids—these things really look like scorpions.”

Xu Wanzhi sat beside him and remarked, “Their descendants are commonly known as sea scorpions.”

Lin Jing replied, “Huh? Really?”

Sea scorpion was certainly easier to remember than “giant eurypterid.”

As he flipped through Antique Codex, Lin Jing couldn’t help feeling like he hadn’t accomplished much, which left him somewhat unmotivated. Resigned, he decided to take it easy and started being more polite to Xu Wanzhi.

That night, transitioning from the Cambrian to the Ordovician was destined to be unique.

Lin Jing, wide awake, had no desire to sleep. Through the submarine windows, the swiftly shifting undersea scenery painted a picture of millions of years passing in the blink of an eye. Awake or asleep, it was an awe-inspiring experience.

Waking early, Lin Jing quietly got out of bed, careful not to disturb Xu Wanzhi. Xu Wanzhi, still asleep, had his eyelashes lowered, his serene sleeping face making him appear particularly gentle.

Lin Jing tiptoed out, intending to sit in the conference hall.

Unexpectedly, he ran into Elena in the hallway.

Elena leaned against the wall, a cigarette between her fingers. The smoke she exhaled obscured her gaze as she stared at the notification panel displaying numbers that continuously shifted.

From 510 million years to 480 million years.

The beginning of the Ordovician period.

Lin Jing wasn’t keen on running into her.

But Elena seemed rather enthusiastic. Upon seeing him, she stubbed out her cigarette with her nail and winked at him. “Did you sleep well, cutie?”

Lin Jing responded perfunctorily, “Thanks, well enough.”

Elena’s eyes curved into a smile as she softly called his name, “Lin Jing? Even your name is so cute and gentle. Is this the type Wan likes?”

Lin Jing forced a laugh.

Not at all—he wouldn’t dare presume to be so lucky.

Many people were still asleep, so the hallway lights were off, leaving only the faint underwater glow filtering through the windows.

Elena wore a red dress and said, “Shall we talk?”

Lin Jing replied, “About today’s mission?”

Elena smiled. “No, about your story.”

Lin Jing said, “Sorry, I don’t wish to discuss such personal matters with anyone.”

Elena followed behind him, suddenly asking, “Do you truly know Xu Wanzhi?”

Lin Jing thought to himself: We’ve known each other for less than ten days. How well could I possibly know him? Keeping his expression calm and pleasant, he responded in an indifferent tone, “Does that concern you, ma’am?”

Elena smiled. “Sweetheart, I’m serious. He’s dangerous, you know that?”

Lin Jing, wanting to put an end to this, gazed at her steadily and said, “He is my lover.”

Elena’s red lips curved slightly. “Do you know about the ‘Cosmic Fireworks’?”

Lin Jing replied coldly, “Not interested.”

Elena continued anyway. “It’s understandable if you don’t. This happened over ten years ago. At that time, you were probably four or five years old? The media was all over it, but eventually, the government suppressed the story.” Her gaze turned serpentine as she smiled. “Oh, wait. Maybe you’ll recall its other name—Aurora Explosion.”

The words “Aurora Explosion” made Lin Jing freeze as he pushed open the meeting room door.

Fragments of memories surged in his mind—news reports, television clips, photographs, and the relentless buzz of media coverage. Back then, what caught his attention was probably the name Aurora. Many fairy tale translations used the name Aurora for Sleeping Beauty. His mother had called her that in bedtime stories—something he still remembered.

The memories stopped abruptly at the image of his mother’s tear-filled eyes.

Standing in the red-painted corridor, she had bent down and covered his chattering mouth with her hand, telling him to go back to bed. Young and obedient, he had swallowed his questions, his clear eyes quietly watching her reddened, tear-streaked face.

The Aurora Explosion seemed to carry painful associations for his family as well.

Elena appeared ready to say more, but Xu Wanzhi’s drowsy voice interrupted from behind. He took Lin Jing’s arm, pulling him forward. “You woke up without calling me?”

Lin Jing, relieved, said, “You looked so sound asleep, I didn’t want to disturb you.”

Xu Wanzhi chuckled softly and leaned close to his ear. “So thoughtful?”

Lin Jing forced a smile. “Yes.”

Behind them, Elena flicked her cigarette into a trash can, her face expressionless.

The underwater landscape of the Paleozoic Era was filled with mosses and algae. The higher plants had yet to evolve, and the scenery was dominated by echinoderms and mollusks such as sea lilies, corals, and sea apples.

The Cambrian Explosion introduced a variety of biological “phyla” and “classes,” while the Ordovician Period diversified them further into “orders,” “families,” “genera,” and “species.”

On this second day of exploration, everyone was much more serious compared to the first day.

Even the reckless Black Jacket seemed to understand that losing points was shameful. He spent the day diligently photographing the creatures he had missed before.

The Ordovician was home to many filter-feeding animals. Karl, for instance, casually pointed his camera at the water and managed to light up several entries in his illustrated guide.

“This was supposed to be a 30-point-per-person game, right?” Karl muttered. “Feels more like a freebie—just sightseeing and taking photos.”

Following behind Ke Lingxuan, Karl suddenly had an idea. “Lingxuan, let me take your picture.”

Lingxuan was busy photographing a bryozoan but replied without looking back, “Sure.”

Karl positioned himself near a reef and was about to press the shutter button when a sudden underwater gale swept through. Pebbles from the reef tumbled down, hitting him.

Startled, Karl yelped, “What the h*ll was that?”

Lingxuan, struggling to steady her camera in the wind, pushed back the hair blown into her face. She turned around and went pale.

A massive shadow was gradually consuming the light in their vicinity.

It stood about ten meters tall and passed overhead, its hideous mass of tentacles stirring the water violently. Its dark brown appendages churned the water into a vortex, and the nearby marine life sank to the seafloor in fear.

Lingxuan quickly pulled Karl behind a reef, holding her breath to avoid being detected by the creature.

The predator propelled itself with bursts of water, moving swiftly through the ocean.

Its bizarre form consisted of a long, thin conical shell that made up most of its body, beneath which extended octopus-like tentacles. The appendages, dark brown with terrifying patterns, were as thick as pythons, strong enough to strangle a person. As it inhaled seawater, its body expanded like a spindle, wreaking havoc in its path. It looked like the crazed head of a woman cloaked in a gigantic shell.

Karl and Lingxuan recognized it instantly—the apex predator of the Ordovician seas: the Giant Nautiloid.

The nautiloid hovered above, scanning the area for prey. It soon locked onto a two-meter-long Eurypterid scuttling along the seabed—unfortunately, right in front of their hiding spot. Though blind, the nautiloid’s sensitive tentacles could easily pull them in, especially with its highly developed sense of smell.

Karl and Lingxuan exchanged panicked glances.

Green vines crept up the pitch-black castle; the third snowy night was upon them. Time had run out, and the mission had failed. As the door creaked shut, the dim light illuminated the players’ faces, twisted in despair. Ding dong. The punishment begins. Out of the darkness strode a tall, lean judge, with straight legs and an indescribable air of elegance. All the players were shocked, angry, and terrified. The man gave a lazy smile, his voice casual yet distant: “Don’t rush. I’ll give you ten minutes to run.” The survivors gritted their teeth, faces pale, trembling as they stood and began to flee frantically, searching for the final door. Among them, Lin Jing rose indifferently, heading to the depths of the third floor—the castle's forbidden zone. The final escape route had long been destroyed; it was nothing more than the judge’s cruel game. He’d rather end himself than die at that person’s hands. Suddenly, a statue’s eyes glowed red, and it lunged at him with a knife. In that instant, someone grabbed him around the waist from behind, pulling him out of harm’s way. A low chuckle sounded near his ear: “Baby, it’s only been ten minutes, and you’re already running into my arms?” Lin Jing lowered his gaze: “Get lost.” The young and handsome winner smirked, murmuring softly: “Call me husband, and I’ll let you go.” Lin Jing ground his teeth: “Heh, dream on, kid.” When the role-playing ended, he finally learned the truth: in this game, the "devoted and perfect boyfriend" written into his script was actually the final boss. A scummy liar who toyed with his feelings and ruined his youth. What Lin Jing didn’t know was that from this moment on, this liar would bind himself to him completely. *** In the Eternal Game Player Forum, one post remains perpetually at the top: — — Let’s continue to call out the infamous rank-climbing leech ‘Shuang Mu Cheng Jing’ and his forever-bound lover ‘Wan Feng Wan Yue.’ Ugh, what a disgusting dog pair!” Lin Jing originally wanted to rely on his own skills to pass levels and make money honestly. But thanks to his in-game first love/husband/boyfriend/master(?), he became the most notorious freeloader in the entire interstellar network. Even the official game moderators certified him as the #1 freeloader in the server. Lin Jing typed a slow “?”: Huh? Who’s the freeloader? Xu Wanzhi chuckled lightly, coaxing him gently: “I’m the freeloader. Thank you, baby, for carrying me to the top.” Two powerhouses. *Hunfen: Literally "mixing points," a gaming slang term for someone who gains points, rankings, or rewards by putting in minimal effort, often relying on teammates.
