The No. 1 Hunfen King in the Entire Server [Interstellar] Chapter 44

The Brain Development Project

Lin Jing stared at the computer screen for a long time, softly murmuring her name: “Laixiya.”

He re-entered “Laixiya Osmond” into the search bar, but once again, nothing came up.

This was someone the world had deliberately erased… But why?

The destruction of Aurora had turned a century of the empire’s efforts and billions in resources into ashes. If she was truly the mastermind, there would be no reason to hide it.

A great sinner should be exposed to the public.

Was it due to the secrecy surrounding Aurora? Or to protect the Osmond family’s reputation?

Lin Jing came up with many explanations, yet none felt convincing.

He stopped dwelling on it and deleted his search history. Standing up, he wanted to get a drink of water but noticed a book pressed beneath a glass on the desk.

Kinder- und Hausmärchen. The cover was simple and childlike, depicting two fawns in a forest.

Lin Jing raised an eyebrow. Wasn’t this the fairy tale book his mother used to read to him? She was that sentimental? She had kept it all this time?

Muttering to himself, Lin Jing picked up the book.

The moment he opened it, two slips of paper fell out.

Startled, Lin Jing arranged them. They looked like clippings from a newspaper, and the bolded headlines were shocking.

“This is a double-edged sword. We simply mishandled the blade.”

The other was a sharp rebuke:

“This was a mistake that goes against human nature. Continuing will only lead to irreversible consequences.”

There was no context. Lin Jing was completely puzzled.

“What is this?”

He sighed in frustration.

Moving the paper aside, his gaze landed on the first page of the book—where a name was written in a neat, childlike script:

“Lin Jing.”

So this book really was his.

The bell signaling the end of classes rang at Hailan University.

On the way home, Lin Jing hesitated for a moment before bringing up the topic.

“Mom, I saw an old fairy tale book on your desk.”

Mother Lin chuckled. “Yeah, you’ve got sharp eyes, huh? You even spotted that.”

Lin Jing looked at her with clear eyes and asked, “And I noticed you had two newspaper clippings in it. What is that ‘double-edged sword’ referring to?”

The traffic light ahead turned red, and the car came to a sudden stop.

Mother Lin gripped the steering wheel, staring straight ahead as she replied indifferently, “It’s nothing. Just an abandoned mental power project.”

Lin Jing frowned. “Huh? Explain properly.”

The light turned green, and the car moved forward again.

His mother changed the subject outright. “What do you want for dinner?”

Lin Jing: “…”

Your blatant avoidance is making me very angry!

Suppressing his frustration, he muttered, “Steamed hyacinth.”

Mother Lin laughed and scolded, “Brat.” Then, as if realizing he wasn’t satisfied, she sighed and said softly, “Has your father ever told you why the research institute created Survivor?”

Lin Jing was puzzled. “Does he even need to? The whole world knows—it’s to strengthen national mental power.”

Mother Lin smiled. “That’s right. Survivor was designed to enhance mental power. But in reality, it’s a heavily diluted version of the original Brain Development Project—the very one that was ultimately terminated. That’s the ‘double-edged sword’ you were asking about.”

Lin Jing was stunned. “Brain development… project?”

His mother nodded. “Yes. To put it simply, Survivor is a remnant of that project. But originally, it wasn’t a ‘game’—it was more like a gamble.”

Her gaze turned distant, lost in old memories. Gripping the steering wheel, she smiled faintly.

“In science, the emergence of a single genius represents infinite possibilities. The empire wanted to create a 3S-level genius. But the human limit for mental power is double-S. When someone gains abilities beyond human norms, they must inevitably lose something normal in return.”

Mother Lin continued in a soft, snowflake-light voice, “Forty years ago, the first and only person with SSS-level mental power was born. She truly was a genius. Because of her, we gained the ability to reach further into the universe. But… everything comes at a price.”

She said, “That genius lost her ability to empathize.”

“Without human empathy, there is no joy, no sorrow. No sense of honor, belonging, or responsibility. So tell me—what could possibly restrain someone like that?”

“In the end, the empire lost the gamble.”

Lin Jing stared blankly ahead.

Inside the submarine’s control room, he could hear every word of what Elina had said playing back in his mind.

—Aurora was actually the name of a space probe, meaning ‘Dawn’.
—And it truly was humanity’s dawn. Aurora had the ability to travel at the sixth cosmic velocity, capable of carrying humans across a two-billion-light-year-wide supercluster.
—It was amazing. We left Earth, left the Solar System, left the Milky Way, left our local galaxy group, and were finally about to leave the supercluster to explore a truer universe. But then… it failed.
—That day, all media outlets, television stations, and live-streaming platforms broadcasted Aurora’s launch in real time. We all watched as it shot into the eternal starry river, past the deep crimson Rose Nebula and the blue-green Crab Nebula—yet it never even left the Milky Way.
—At the edge of the galaxy, it suddenly stopped, and then… it exploded.

A sudden realization struck Lin Jing like lightning.

He blurted out, “When you say the empire lost the gamble… Do you mean the Aurora explosion?”

The car interior instantly froze.

They were now driving along a winding forest road. Mother Lin abruptly hit the brakes, bringing the car to a stop.

Turning to face him, her deep blue eyes were more serious than ever.

“Who told you that?”

Lin Jing hesitated before answering truthfully, “A teammate I met in the game.”

His mother’s voice was unwavering. “What’s their name?”

Lin Jing was confused. “Uh… Why are you asking in such detail? Wasn’t this event widely reported back then? Any older person would know about it.”

Mama Lin let out a sarcastic laugh. “Even if older people know about it, all they’d say is ‘cosmic fireworks.’ The media called it ‘Explorer 245,’ and only a handful of people knew its real name—Aurora.”

Lin Jing was stunned. Meeting his mother’s serious gaze, he quickly answered honestly, “Her name is… Elena.”

Mama Lin frowned slightly, as if trying to recall something. But after a while, she still couldn’t find anyone by that name in her memory.

“Forget it.” She leaned back, her expression weary under the shifting light and shadows. With a sigh, she said, “The project was terminated, and that person died in the explosion. Let’s drop the topic for now.”

Lin Jing pressed his lips together before asking one last question. “Then… was it?”

Mama Lin: “Hm?”

Lin Jing: “Was the explosion of the probe intentional?”

His mother was silent for a second before restarting the car. Moonlight filtered through the trees, casting flickering shadows on her face. Her lips curled into something between sorrow and mockery. “It was probably her revenge.”

Lin Jing still had things he wanted to say, but seeing his mother’s expression, he held back.

Revenge? Revenge meant hatred. But someone without empathy wasn’t supposed to feel hate, right?

The first thing Mama Lin did after returning home was water the plants. Then she went to the kitchen with the robot to cook.

Lin Jing climbed upstairs, opened the official Survivor game website, and stared at the leaderboard. He hesitated for a long time before sending a friend request to “Wan Feng Wan Yue.” But he didn’t have high hopes. Xu Wanzhi probably received countless friend requests every second—it was unlikely he’d even notice.

Just as Lin Jing exited the site, a chat window suddenly popped up.

It was from the blonde guy from the last match.

[One Hundred One Night]: …Lin bro, is that you?

[One Hundred One Night]: [Forum: Sharing an absolute god-tier match I just played—first, check out this insane scoreboard…]

Lin Jing: “???”

What the h*ll.

He clicked in.

D*mn, my hands are still shaking from excitement. Am I secretly the long-lost son of the research institute’s director?!

1L: Holy sh*t…

2L: HOLY SH*T.

3L: HOLY SH*T!!!

4L: Stop saying “holy sh*t.” Can we have some variety? Say something cultured, like me: Amazing [wow][beer]

5L: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7… SEVEN people lost 25 points. How is that even possible?

6L: Another +25 points god-tier player? Wait… hold on… why does the ID “Shuang Mu Cheng Jing” seem so familiar?

56L [I’m a Good Boy]: Sorry, sorry, I type a bit slow.

This is my first time posting in the forum, and I just want to say—this match was absolutely insane. I think I’ll only ever get this lucky once in my life. It wasn’t some pro carrying me—it was my entire team throwing the game in my favor.

Let me set the stage: The match was an Ancient Era Codex collection mission—you take photos with a camera. The rule was simple: get attacked by prehistoric creatures, lose health, and if your health hit zero, you were forcibly eliminated. But the system gave us a single-use revive per day, so it should’ve been an easy, stress-free match.

Yeah… we wasted that revive almost immediately. (Uh) (sweat) Long story short, let’s just move on.

Now, let’s talk about my baffling start.

I, the OP, am a good boy. Despite my eccentric fashion sense, occasional foul language, and mild prejudices, I am still a good boy.

And then I met my teammates.

My first impressions (this is what I thought on Day 1—don’t judge me, my opinion changed later):

  • A petty, mean-spirited fat one
  • A flirtatious fox-spirit wannabe
  • A brainless idiot who probably indulges too much
  • A nosy woman
  • The nosy woman’s simp
  • A scrawny guy
  • A timid, cowardly guy
  • And a gay couple

That’s it.

57L: …

58L: 666, here to witness this “good boy” speak.

59L: Alright, alright, your descriptions alone confirm you are, indeed, a “good boy.”

60L: Hahahahahaha, I’m dying.

61L: ??? Gay couple?! Wait, why does this feel so familiar?

84L [I’m a Good Boy]: (Ducking for cover) Don’t flame me, don’t flame me! It was just my first impression! Later on, Lin bro and Xu bro totally won me over. All mech students are just so straightforward and pure.

Green vines crept up the pitch-black castle; the third snowy night was upon them. Time had run out, and the mission had failed. As the door creaked shut, the dim light illuminated the players’ faces, twisted in despair. Ding dong. The punishment begins. Out of the darkness strode a tall, lean judge, with straight legs and an indescribable air of elegance. All the players were shocked, angry, and terrified. The man gave a lazy smile, his voice casual yet distant: “Don’t rush. I’ll give you ten minutes to run.” The survivors gritted their teeth, faces pale, trembling as they stood and began to flee frantically, searching for the final door. Among them, Lin Jing rose indifferently, heading to the depths of the third floor—the castle's forbidden zone. The final escape route had long been destroyed; it was nothing more than the judge’s cruel game. He’d rather end himself than die at that person’s hands. Suddenly, a statue’s eyes glowed red, and it lunged at him with a knife. In that instant, someone grabbed him around the waist from behind, pulling him out of harm’s way. A low chuckle sounded near his ear: “Baby, it’s only been ten minutes, and you’re already running into my arms?” Lin Jing lowered his gaze: “Get lost.” The young and handsome winner smirked, murmuring softly: “Call me husband, and I’ll let you go.” Lin Jing ground his teeth: “Heh, dream on, kid.” When the role-playing ended, he finally learned the truth: in this game, the "devoted and perfect boyfriend" written into his script was actually the final boss. A scummy liar who toyed with his feelings and ruined his youth. What Lin Jing didn’t know was that from this moment on, this liar would bind himself to him completely. *** In the Eternal Game Player Forum, one post remains perpetually at the top: — — Let’s continue to call out the infamous rank-climbing leech ‘Shuang Mu Cheng Jing’ and his forever-bound lover ‘Wan Feng Wan Yue.’ Ugh, what a disgusting dog pair!” Lin Jing originally wanted to rely on his own skills to pass levels and make money honestly. But thanks to his in-game first love/husband/boyfriend/master(?), he became the most notorious freeloader in the entire interstellar network. Even the official game moderators certified him as the #1 freeloader in the server. Lin Jing typed a slow “?”: Huh? Who’s the freeloader? Xu Wanzhi chuckled lightly, coaxing him gently: “I’m the freeloader. Thank you, baby, for carrying me to the top.” Two powerhouses. *Hunfen: Literally "mixing points," a gaming slang term for someone who gains points, rankings, or rewards by putting in minimal effort, often relying on teammates.
