Genetically modified hyacinths had much larger flower clusters and a longer lifespan. The valley’s terrain was lower, allowing the wind to sweep through freely. Green grass quivered, white petals scattered in the air. Lin Jing raised a hand to shield his eyes from the glare and murmured, “It is quite romantic.”
The senior chuckled. “Everyone who sees it for the first time says the same thing.”
Lin Jing smiled but didn’t echo her words.
Beyond the flower field was where his parents had lived.
The senior had other matters to attend to, so she left him alone to get familiar with the place.
Not that it was necessary—Lin Jing didn’t think he’d be staying long.
Dean Chang’s suggestion was just for him to train a bit. And training… meant participating in a few more games.
Lu Xingyu had been bombarding him with messages.
Annoyed, Lin Jing propped his phone on the table and switched to video chat.
Lu Xingyu lounged on his sofa, hugging a caterpillar pillow, his expression full of curiosity. “You okay? How’d you sleep last night? Are the streets in District 1 harder than usual?”
Lin Jing: “It was alright. The ground’s cold. I need a blanket.”
Lu Xingyu burst out laughing. After messing around for a while, he finally asked where Lin Jing was now.
Lin Jing gave him a brief rundown of yesterday’s events.
Lu Xingyu was dumbfounded. “D*mn, that’s way too much of a coincidence. Are you sure you’re not making this up?”
Lin Jing shot him a look. “Am I crazy? Why would I make up a story where some guy hotter than me swoops in to save the day?”
Lu Xingyu clutched his nose. “Okay, okay, my bad, I was wrong.” Then, with a sly grin, he added, “So, let me see this handsome guy.”
Lin Jing, sorting through his things, pointed at himself. “There, take a look.”
Lu Xingyu corrected him, “The one hotter than you.”
Lin Jing: “Nope. Find him yourself.”
Lu Xingyu raised an eyebrow. “Oh? Hiding him from me already? Alright, I get it. This thing between you two—it’s real.”
Lin Jing laughed. “You sure don’t look like someone with an upcoming assessment. So much free time. Aren’t you supposed to be training?”
Lu Xingyu, looking utterly jaded, sighed. “Whatever. At some point, you just have to learn to let go.”
Then, just as quickly, his interest reignited. “Oh, I gotta tell you something. You know how the General is coming? Apparently, he’s going to tour the university too, so a bunch of departments are putting up exhibitions just for the occasion. The art, engineering, and software faculties are especially into it. It’s gonna be huge. You have to come.”
“Sure.”
Lin Jing hesitated for a moment before asking, “Are there any rental places near Imperial University?”
Lu Xingyu’s eyes widened. “Huh? Why are you looking for a rental? You’re not staying in District 1 anymore?”
Lin Jing lowered his gaze. “Mm. It’s inconvenient.”
Lu Xingyu: “What’s inconvenient?”
Lin Jing: “To be precise… I feel a little awkward.”
Lu Xingyu was shocked. “You? Awkward? No way. No way. Dude, you used to shamelessly mooch off my family’s lunches for a whole month without breaking a sweat.”
Lin Jing: “……”
Lately, Lu Xingyu had been in full romance-brain mode. He analyzed seriously, “For someone as… uh, independent as you to feel awkward, there are only two possibilities: either you hate him, or you love him.”
After saying that, he instinctively shrank back, hiding behind his pillow. But strangely, Lin Jing didn’t roll his eyes or fire back with sarcasm.
Lin Jing was still organizing his things, holding a stack of old books. He lowered his gaze quietly, standing before the desk, lost in thought.
Lu Xingyu: “……”
Lu Xingyu swallowed hard and asked, his voice trembling, “What are you thinking about?”
Lin Jing snapped out of it and gave him a deadpan look, full of mockery. “I’m wondering… what makes you think you’re qualified to tell me how to do things?”
Then, without hesitation, he hung up.
Lu Xingyu could only curse at the air.
The window of this room faced the sea of flowers.
It had been a week since the last game.
It was about time to start the third one.
But for now, since he had accepted Lu Xingyu’s invitation, he had to delay it again.
At night, Dean Chang took him for another examination. When he came out, Xu Wanzhi was sitting on the sofa reading a book, his arm lazily draped over the armrest, his expression indifferent and relaxed.
Dean Chang said a few more things, but Lin Jing didn’t really pay attention.
The dean asked where he was planning to stay. Lin Jing replied that he’d stay at the base for the night and return to the main star tomorrow.
Dean Chang nodded and instructed Xu Wanzhi not to leave him alone in District 1.
Xu Wanzhi lifted his eyes, his gaze landing directly on Lin Jing.
Lin Jing forced a stiff smile.
By the time he was sent off, it was already nighttime, and the stars were out—perhaps the only place on the main star where one could still see the Milky Way.
The forest, the sea of flowers, the starry sky… As they walked, the cool night breeze helped Lin Jing clear his mind.
He took a deep breath and spoke. “I didn’t get a chance to introduce myself yesterday. Let’s get to know each other properly in reality. Lin Jing, 19 years old, from Hailan Star, a… pending student at Imperial University.”
“Pending student” really was the perfect way to put it.
Xu Wanzhi’s steps paused as he stopped in front of him, his voice as cool as the night breeze, his gaze carrying a hint of doubt. “So, you want to reintroduce yourself to me?”
Lin Jing hadn’t expected him to respond that way. “Well… yeah, something like that.”
Xu Wanzhi looked at him with amusement, watching as he lowered his head, lips curving slightly before he leaned down. “Let me ask you something first. You’ve been avoiding my gaze all day yesterday and today. Why? Are you shy?”
His breath brushed against him as he leaned in. The cold scent of cedar mixed with the hyacinths, strangely intoxicating.
Shy, my *ss.
Not this again.
Once the nervousness, panic, and strange awkwardness passed, Lin Jing finally lifted his head, his eyes full of frustration as he spoke honestly. “It’s this feeling. You could flirt recklessly in the game, fine, whatever, but in reality… it just feels weird.”
Xu Wanzhi probably hadn’t expected that answer. He was momentarily stunned before letting out a soft chuckle.
He took a step back, politely maintaining some distance.
“Apologies.”
But his apology was accompanied by a teasing smile.
Lin Jing suppressed whatever he was feeling inside and quickly said, “It’s fine, it’s fine.”
In the sea of flowers, the sound of insects filled the air.
Xu Wanzhi gave a faint smile. “Must’ve been that first world. Left too deep an impression.”
Lin Jing’s memory was immediately pulled back to that disastrous night.
Scar Bro had been spitting mad, and the more he explained, the worse it got.
“Speak up! Didn’t you want to explain? Here’s your chance! What were you two doing if not setting fires? What were you doing on the mountain top?!”
“Uh… looking for a thrill.”
“A thrill?! You two went to the mountaintop for a thrill?”
“…Is it that unreasonable for young people to seek a bit of excitement?”
With Feng Haozhong fanning the flames in the background, the ever-cool and distant Xu Wanzhi had somehow been dragged into a ridiculous scandal—one involving “riding a cow for a secret rendezvous”—and even ended up with the label of “boyfriend.”
Thinking back on it now, Lin Jing wanted to strangle his past, overly straightforward self.
That night was still crystal clear in his mind.
The dim, flickering light in the police station, Scar Bro roaring with rage, the village chief trembling with fury as he raised his cane to hit someone, Feng Haozhong clapping and cheering in glee, teammates eating popcorn like they were watching the drama of the century.
Lin Jing, utterly defeated, had buried his face in his hands while beside him, Xu Wanzhi had been laughing—head down on the table, arm covering his face, laughing so hard the climbing ivy outside the window trembled.
Lin Jing: “…” So the root of all this disaster was a d*mn cow?
Xu Wanzhi spoke as if it were just an ordinary matter. “I’d never been anyone’s boyfriend before. Thought it was interesting, so I played along. And then… well, I guess I got a little addicted.”
He couldn’t help but laugh again, his eyes soft with a breathtaking beauty.
Lin Jing was exasperated—Did he even know what “addiction” meant?
Xu Wanzhi’s smile faded slightly as he said, “But if that’s what’s bothering you, I’ll be more careful.”
“…Alright.” Lin Jing was momentarily dazed, unable to understand the faint sense of disappointment in his heart.
Xu Wanzhi tilted his head. “Then let’s do it your way. A proper introduction.”
He said, “Xu Wanzhi, 22 years old, main star, Imperial University, Mecha Department.”
Lin Jing exhaled, lifted his head, and his deep brown eyes were clear and bright. “Pleasure to meet you, Senior.”
Great, no more awkwardness.
He really was a genius at diffusing awkward situations.
Xu Wanzhi smiled faintly. “Pleasure.”
Wait.
Lin Jing’s mind latched onto something.
Imperial University… Mecha Department?
He hesitated. “Mecha Department?”
“Mm.”
Lin Jing asked cautiously, “Are you the guy who barely goes to school but has been first in your year for years?”
Xu Wanzhi thought for a moment. “Seems like it.”
Lin Jing was speechless. So it really was him. The legendary figure of Imperial University was standing right in front of him.
Lin Jing muttered, “…I have a friend who really admires you.”
Xu Wanzhi gave a polite smile, seemingly unsurprised. “Thanks.”
True to his word, in the days that followed, he remained polite, distant but not unfriendly—just like the perfect, untouchable prodigy relative you’d meet at family gatherings.
Lin Jing rubbed his nose and let out a quiet sigh. He had figured out how to interact with Xu Wanzhi in reality. But… why wasn’t he particularly happy about it?
Back in his room, Lin Jing showered and collapsed onto the bed. But just like the night before, he couldn’t seem to calm down—both times because of the same person.
What do you do when you can’t sleep?
Read, I guess…
Lin Jing stared blankly at the ceiling for a moment before sitting up abruptly, shaking off his thoughts. He took a deep breath, reached for the nightstand, and pulled out the diary he had unexpectedly found while organizing earlier that day.
Looking at his mother’s familiar handwriting, Lin Jing felt his emotions settle.
He adjusted his lying position, making himself more comfortable as he flipped through the pages.
His mother’s diary was filled with small, everyday details—a plant blooming, a new sprout breaking through the soil. Every line seemed to carry a faint, elegant fragrance.
It seemed she had some kind of recording duty at the base, as her diary occasionally mentioned brief observations. “He seemed to be in good condition today.” “What an adorable child. I really look forward to the day he opens his eyes.”
His mother had always been a little mysterious like that.
Sleepiness crept up on Lin Jing as he read, his eyelids growing heavier.
His vision blurred and cleared repeatedly.
May 2nd, Sunny.
Laixiya asked me how to connect with a child.
I told her—why not tell him a fairy tale?
No child can resist elves, dragons, forests, and princesses.
May 3rd, Rainy.
But it seems like there are always surprises.
May 12th, Sunny.
Lin Jing caused trouble. That little troublemaker—I should never have let him come here.
Where did he get the confidence to proudly educate others about the outside world when he can’t even speak clearly himself?
June 7th, Overcast.
Laixiya asked me if I ever wanted my child to become a hero.
Lin Jing was playing in the flower field and tripped over nothing.
Utterly clueless.
I said—there’s no such thing as a hero that dumb.
Laixiya didn’t reply and just left.
Lin Jing picked a flower off the ground and handed it to me, looking up with a dirty face but an expression full of pride.
I took the flower, intending to scold him for not keeping clean, but his eager, expectant eyes were too cute—I couldn’t keep up the act and ended up laughing instead.
Forget it.
It is what it is.
He’s not my hero. He’s my angel. A clumsy little angel.
As long as he’s happy, that’s all that matters.
