A Dog Out of Nowhere Chapter 64

The moment Fang Chi stepped into the courtyard, he was extremely nervous. Not only was this his first time meeting Sun Wenqu’s father, his partner’s parent, but he could also feel the heavy, suffocating pressure between father and son. Before he could even figure out how to react to their brief exchange, the high‑difficulty question of “Who are you?” was thrown at him.

It felt like a gust of wind blew through his brain, not a small breeze, but a howling one, scattering his thoughts everywhere.

This tall, thin, scholarly‑looking old man was Sun Wenqu’s father.

Fang Chi stared at him.

And the old man stared back with an expression Fang Chi couldn’t decipher.

How should he answer?

Hello, Grandpa, I’m Sun Wenqu’s son.

Hello, Uncle, I’m Sun Wenqu’s boyfriend.

I’m a chive spirit.

I’m a wild dog.

I’m the gun king.

I’m…

Sun Wenqu turned to look at Fang Chi. He hadn’t expected his father to shift his attention to Fang Chi so quickly. Fang Chi was standing there expressionless, staring back at the old man.

He must be nervous.

But after a couple seconds, Sun Wenqu wasn’t so sure.

Fang Chi’s face showed no expression at all, just silently meeting the old man’s gaze, even with a strange hint of arrogance.

For a moment, Sun Wenqu suddenly felt very pleased.

“Hm?” The father frowned when Fang Chi didn’t answer.

“You asking me?” Fang Chi said.

“Who else would I be asking?” The father’s brows tightened.

Sun Wenqu cleared his throat, thinking Fang Chi might not be able to handle this situation and preparing to step in, when Fang Chi spoke again:

“Oh, asking me. I’m Sun Wenqu’s… boy…”

Boyfriend.

Sun Wenqu raised an eyebrow, looking at him.

He had considered the possibility that Fang Chi might answer like this, but given how nervous Fang Chi was, he thought it would be difficult for him to say it out loud.

Hearing it now, warmth spread through his chest, soft and gentle.

But Fang Chi didn’t get to finish the word. Li Bowen suddenly burst out with two loud, awkward laughs, cutting him off: “Friend! He’s Wenqu’s friend. Uncle Sun, this kid is a guide we met at the club.”

After saying that, he glanced at Sun Wenqu. The look he gave after “covering” for them made Sun Wenqu’s stomach twist.

Who the h*ll asked you to cover?

With acting that exaggerated, even if it were a cover, it would be a failed mission with total casualties.

“Did I ask you?” Fang Chi suddenly said, staring at Li Bowen.

Sun Wenqu snapped his head toward Fang Chi.

Fang Chi finally had an expression, disgust and impatience.

The moment those words came out, everyone in the courtyard, including Hu Yuanyuan, who had just lifted a foot to step outside, froze.

Fang Chi, you’re *** incredible.

You really made an entrance today.

You’re too *** incredible.

Being too nervous to speak would’ve been fine.

But opening your mouth and saying something this high‑difficulty?

You’ve basically decided you’ll never speak to this old man again…

Li Bowen stared at him in disbelief. “What?”

“Hello, Uncle,” Fang Chi said to the father. “I’m Sun Wenqu’s boyfriend.”

“Boyfriend?” The father looked him up and down in surprise, then turned to glance at Li Bowen.

Li Bowen gave a tiny nod.

“This is that little boyfriend of yours?” the father asked Sun Wenqu, his tone full of disdain.

“Mm,” Sun Wenqu crossed his arms and curled his lips. “That’s right.”

The father didn’t speak. After a moment, he gave Fang Chi a cold, contemptuous look. “So it’s you.”

Fang Chi said nothing.

“Sir,” Hu Yuanyuan stepped up with a smile. “Didn’t you say you wanted to see the kiln? Let’s go look now? Liangzi! Take him around again. I’ll go call and book lunch.”

“Master,” Ma Liang hurried over. “Come check the kiln with me?”

Sun Wenqu’s father snorted coldly and followed the couple toward the backyard.

Li Bowen hesitated, then followed.

“Id— idle people,” Ma Liang reached back and blocked him. “No entry.”

Li Bowen froze awkwardly.

Now only three people remained in the courtyard.

Fang Chi looked at Li Bowen. He hated this man, he’d disliked him from the first meeting, sensing how fake he was. Now he hated him even more.

Judging from the father’s reaction, Li Bowen had clearly already told him about Fang Chi.

And judging by that reaction… it wasn’t a good introduction.

The thought made anger surge up from Fang Chi’s feet.

“You know,” Li Bowen finally spoke to Sun Wenqu after a moment of silence, “you haven’t seen your dad in so long. When you do, can’t you talk a little more respectfully?”

“You brought my dad here?” Sun Wenqu asked.

“…Yes,” Li Bowen frowned and sighed. “Wenqu, you can’t keep being like this with him. You need to find a way…”

“How did you introduce my boyfriend to him?” Sun Wenqu interrupted.

“I just mentioned it casually,” Li Bowen glanced at Fang Chi and lowered his voice. “What else could I say? The old man already can’t accept it, and since he thinks he’s just a kid… the only way was to cover for you, say it’s just fooling around, no one’s serious, so he wouldn’t…”

Fang Chi snapped his head toward him.

“Get out.” Sun Wenqu said.

“…Wenqu?” Li Bowen frowned.

“Get out.” Sun Wenqu repeated.

“You…” Li Bowen stared at him, then sighed and walked toward the courtyard gate. “Fine, fine, I’ll go walk outside. Your temper…”

After he left, Fang Chi stood silently for a moment, then turned and headed toward the gate.

“Where are you going?” Sun Wenqu asked.

“Nowhere.” Fang Chi said.

“Fang Little Chi, what are you doing?” Sun Wenqu leaned against a tree trunk, narrowing his eyes.

Fang Chi turned back. “Stay here. I’ll be right back.”

Sun Wenqu didn’t reply.

Outside the studio was a newly built road, still unfinished, with open drainage ditches and piles of dirt on both sides.

Li Bowen hadn’t gone far, he was standing on a dirt mound across the road, talking on the phone with his back to the courtyard.

Fang Chi crossed the road, jumped over two dirt piles, walked up behind him, and kicked him squarely in the back.

“Ah!” Li Bowen let out a short, sharp scream as he was kicked straight into the drainage ditch.

Before he could climb out, Fang Chi jumped down after him, grabbed him by the back of the collar, and yanked him up.

“Fang Chi?” Li Bowen’s eyes bulged when he saw who it was. Then he shouted, “What the *** are you doing! Are you insane!”

Fang Chi didn’t answer, he punched him in the stomach.

Li Bowen gasped, losing his voice.

Fang Chi let go. Li Bowen collapsed to his knees in the ditch. Fang Chi stepped back, standing in front of him silently.

“What the *** are you doing!” Li Bowen gritted his teeth. “You got a death wish?”

“That’s you.” Fang Chi said, kicking his leg, this time lightly.

“Trying to vent for Wenqu?” Li Bowen clutched his leg and laughed. “I didn’t provoke him. He and I are brothers, we’ve known each other twenty years…”

“You provoked me.” Fang Chi said.

***

Sun Wenqu sat at the tea table, poured himself some tea, picked a cup, and drank slowly.

After two sips, Fang Chi walked back in.

Sun Wenqu glanced at him. “Want tea?”

“No,” Fang Chi sat beside him and glanced toward the backyard. “Your dad’s not back yet?”

“Mm.” Sun Wenqu looked at him. “Where’s Li Bowen?”

Fang Chi paused, then muttered, “He accidentally fell into the drainage ditch.”

“Oh.” Sun Wenqu took a sip of tea, smiled, and sighed softly.

“I’m done for today, right?” Fang Chi whispered.

“Hm?” Sun Wenqu set down his cup.

“I managed to offend everyone I shouldn’t offend.” Fang Chi said.

“It’s fine,” Sun Wenqu smiled. “Other than me, there’s no one you’re not allowed to offend.”

“…Oh.” Fang Chi took his cup and drank from it. “I was just… so angry. I don’t even know why.”

“It’s summer.” Sun Wenqu leaned back, stretching his legs.

“He’s the one who told your dad you were here. He brought him to cause trouble. And he told your dad… that ‘just playing’ thing, if he hadn’t said that, I wouldn’t have gotten so mad.” Fang Chi bit his lip. “I’m not playing.”

“I know.” Sun Wenqu hooked a finger under his chin twice.

When the father and Ma Liang’s couple returned from the backyard, Li Bowen, covered in mud, walked into the courtyard at the same time.

“Wh, what happened?” Ma Liang froze when he saw him.

“Nothing,” Li Bowen glanced at Fang Chi. “I just… fell into the ditch.”

“Ditch?” Ma Liang clicked his tongue. “The toilet is inside the house.”

“Liangzi!” Li Bowen snapped, annoyed.

“There’s water in the backyard,” Hu Yuanyuan waved him over. “Come on, wash up. Did you get hurt?”

“No.” Li Bowen pressed his stomach.

Sun Wenqu’s father hadn’t spoken the whole time. After Li Bowen followed Hu Yuanyuan to the backyard, he finally glanced at Fang Chi. “What was he doing over by the ditch?”

“I don’t know,” Fang Chi froze for a moment. “Peeing?”

The father said nothing. Sun Wenqu quickly turned his head away and laughed toward the wall.

“I’m not eating,” the father said. “I have things to do this afternoon. I’m leaving.”

“Eat before, before you go,” Ma Liang blocked him. “You rare— rarely come to my place.”

“There will be other chances,” the father said. “Isn’t he making things here?”

“He’s making them?” Ma Liang laughed. “If he’s willing to, then great.”

The father gave Ma Liang a cold sneer. “You two really do wear the same pair of pants.”

“Really wear, can’t fit,” Ma Liang said. “I’ve gotten fat lately.”

“I’m leaving.” The father walked toward the courtyard gate.

Sun Wenqu stood up and followed him out.

“Something to say?” the father turned to look at him.

“No.” Sun Wenqu said.

“I don’t want to interfere in your business,” the father said. “But I do want to see what kind of mess you manage to make.”

“A big loud flower.” Sun Wenqu said.

Li Bowen came out of the courtyard, still wet, looking miserable.

“Uncle Sun,” he walked over, “you’re leaving? You finally came all this way…”

“Looking like that, you still want to eat?” the father glanced at him. “If you want to meet up with him, find another time.”

“Then Wenqu…” Li Bowen turned to look at Sun Wenqu.

Sun Wenqu didn’t speak or look at him, he just turned around and went back inside.

After Ma Liang and his wife walked the father out, they hurried back. Hu Yuanyuan came over and slapped Fang Chi on the back. “My god, nephew!”

“What… Auntie?” Fang Chi choked from the slap.

“Was it you who threw Li Bowen into the ditch!” Hu Yuanyuan glared at him.

“No,” Fang Chi shook his head. “Uncle Liangzi said he fell in while peeing.”

“Kee— keep pretending,” Ma Liang pointed at him, then glanced at Sun Wenqu. “You two really, really aren’t afraid of trouble.”

“I’m hungry.” Sun Wenqu said.

“People like him, you, you two just wait, wait and see,” Ma Liang drank two sips of tea. “He definitely won’t, won’t let it go.”

“Eat.” Sun Wenqu said.

Hu Yuanyuan booked a small private room at a nearby restaurant, and they all drove over.

As soon as they sat down, Hu Yuanyuan told the waiter to start serving the dishes she ordered earlier.

“We can’t finish all that,” Sun Wenqu said. “Cancel a few.”

“I ordered for four,” Hu Yuanyuan said. “There’s no way the old man would eat with us, no, with you. I never ordered for six.”

“…You really married a smart wife.” Sun Wenqu blinked and gave Ma Liang a thumbs‑up.

“Of course.” Ma Liang nodded without shame.

Fang Chi still hadn’t recovered. He felt dazed the whole morning. During the meal he just kept his head down eating, not saying a word.

He only listened to Sun Wenqu and Ma Liang talk.

Only now did he learn how bad things were between Sun Wenqu and his father. Only now did he understand why Sun Wenqu moved out of that apartment and went to live with his grandfather.

Normally, a 30‑year‑old man falling out with his family isn’t a big deal. But Fang Chi suddenly felt worried.

Because this wasn’t just anyone, this was Sun Wenqu. A 30‑year‑old who had never held a job, never supported himself.

And was very pampered.

After eating, they returned to Ma Liang’s studio. Sun Wenqu and Ma Liang went into the office with the technician to work on the computer.

Fang Chi watched for a bit but couldn’t understand anything, so he went to the courtyard.

“Come shopping with Auntie?” Hu Yuanyuan asked.

“What?” Fang Chi froze. The studio looked modern, but it was surrounded by industrial parks. Shopping?

“Shopping,” Hu Yuanyuan said. “There’s a big village nearby, like a small town. Lots of nice clothes…”

“I’m not going.” Fang Chi refused immediately.

“Oh!” Hu Yuanyuan laughed. “You’re not planning to sit here guarding Sun Wenqu all day, are you?”

“Mm.” Fang Chi smiled, then the smile faded. “I think I was too impulsive today.”

“Impulsive? About Li Bowen peeing?” Hu Yuanyuan asked.

“Will it cause trouble for Sun Wenqu?” Fang Chi frowned.

“When you went to watch Li Bowen pee, did Wenqu stop you?” Hu Yuanyuan asked, smiling.

“…No. I guess not.” Fang Chi muttered.

“Then it’s fine,” Hu Yuanyuan patted him. “Wenqu looks like he doesn’t care about anything, but he knows exactly what he’s doing. If he didn’t stop you, it means it’s fine. If he doesn’t care, why should you?”

“Really?” Fang Chi looked at her.

“Trust Auntie. Don’t worry,” Hu Yuanyuan waved her arm. “Besides, what trouble could there be? You’ve got me and Uncle Liangzi.”

Fang Chi smiled.

Sun Wenqu stayed in the office the whole time. Fang Chi didn’t go in, he just sat in the courtyard playing on his phone.

By the time Sun Wenqu came out yawning around four, Fang Chi’s phone was nearly dead.

“Let’s go,” Sun Wenqu came over and touched his face. “Heading back.”

“All done?” Fang Chi stood up.

“Mm. We can start working with the soil tomorrow,” Sun Wenqu smiled, hooked an arm around his neck, and leaned in to kiss the corner of his mouth. “It’s going to get busy.”

“Oh my god.” Hu Yuanyuan, standing nearby, ran back inside.

“Are we cooking at home or eating out?” Fang Chi held his waist.

“Home,” Sun Wenqu said. “Haven’t eaten your cooking in a while.”

“Didn’t you say my cooking tastes bad?” Fang Chi laughed.

“It is bad,” Sun Wenqu stretched lazily. “But I want it. Let’s buy groceries on the way.”

Fang Chi looked at him. Every time he saw Sun Wenqu in this lazy, ready‑to‑collapse‑onto‑a‑bed state, he felt dazed.

Beautiful.

He liked it.

“Hm?” Seeing him silent, Sun Wenqu glanced at him.

Fang Chi snapped back. “Cook?”

Sun Wenqu flopped onto a chair and laughed. “Hey, son, do you have anything else in your head right now?”

“…Probably.” Fang Chi rubbed his nose, embarrassed.

As soon as they got in the car, Sun Wenqu leaned back and closed his eyes. Fang Chi felt they hadn’t even driven ten minutes before he fell asleep.

Tonight was probably a no‑go.

Even though Fang Chi really, really, really wanted to, just seeing Sun Wenqu leaning like that made him want to pounce and tear off his clothes, but… Fang Chi looked at his profile. Today probably wasn’t a good day. He wasn’t in a great mood and had worked all afternoon.

Fang Chi sighed softly. Maybe he really did have nothing else in his head. His own mood wasn’t great today either, yet his mind was full of Sun Wenqu’s hoarse moans and *** breaths.

He parked in the supermarket lot across from their building, hesitating whether to go buy groceries or wake Sun Wenqu.

In those few seconds of hesitation, he sadly realized that just looking at Sun Wenqu’s collarbone was enough to make him hard.

“D*mn.” Fang Chi whispered miserably.

“…We there?” Sun Wenqu opened one eye sleepily.

“Mm.” Fang Chi nodded.

“Go buy groceries. I’ll nap.” Sun Wenqu said.

“Okay.” Fang Chi answered, but didn’t move.

He wanted to wait for himself to calm down before getting out. But he overestimated his self‑control. He didn’t even need to look at Sun Wenqu or hear his voice, just the coconut scent on him was enough to keep the flag flying.

Sun Wenqu waited a long time with his eyes closed. When Fang Chi still didn’t move, he opened them again. “Forgot your wallet?”

“No.” Fang Chi stared at him.

“Then…” Sun Wenqu paused, glanced downward, and laughed softly, turning his head away.
“Good lord.”

“What do I do?” Fang Chi said.

Sun Wenqu laughed for a while, then looked around. “You parked pretty far to the side.”

“Huh?” Fang Chi didn’t understand.

“Come here.” Sun Wenqu curled his lips.

Fang Chi froze for ten seconds. “Here?”

“Do you want it or not?” Sun Wenqu clicked his tongue.

“Want.” Fang Chi immediately leaned over.

For the first time, he felt the cramped Beetle was perfectly reasonable.
