A Dog Out of Nowhere Chapter 95

Extra 1

It was a stray cat.

A stray cat born from another stray cat. It had no name, only a sex and fur color.

Male. Yellow.

Its mother was also a yellow cat, but aside from sex and fur color, its mother actually had a name.

Her name was Huang Dapao.

Actually, it thought its mother didn’t resemble a “big cannon” at all, but that person who walked by every day carrying a backpack stubbornly insisted on calling her Huang Dapao.

There were many aunties in this neighborhood who fed cats. Mother knew all of them. But this person had only once given Mother a half-eaten steamed bun, and Mother wasn’t familiar with him, so whenever he passed by, she would hide it and its siblings in the grass.

Originally, it had three siblings.

Now only it remained.

This person was a student. Every time he passed by, he wore sportswear. Once, while passing, he suddenly squatted down and formally introduced himself to Mother:

“Hello Huang Dapao, my name is Fang Chi.”

Mother probably also couldn’t understand why she had suddenly been saddled with such a ridiculous and ugly name. This student called Fang Chi insisted on calling her Huang Dapao, Dapao, but Mother never responded once. If not for considering the safety of a stray cat, she probably wouldn’t have paid him any attention at all.

But Mother couldn’t protect it for very long.

One day, Mother left the grass nest to wander around for a bit, and never came back.

Only it remained in the grass nest.

One day. Two days. Then it rained once. It felt like it had caught a cold, but Mother never returned. It didn’t dare leave, and the aunties who brought food didn’t know where Mother had gone either.

Three days. Four days.

Hungry and miserable, it felt like it was about to die. Survival instinct made it struggle out of the grass nest when that person called Fang Chi passed by.

“Huh?” Fang Chi spotted it and bent down to look. “Dapao? You got smaller?”

It struggled to turn around and crawl back into the grass nest, feeling that Fang Chi’s intelligence was deeply concerning.

But it failed. Fang Chi scooped it up by the belly.

“You’re Huang Dapao’s…” Fang Chi flipped it over and looked at its stomach. “Son?”

It felt awful and weakly let out a meow in protest at Fang Chi casually inspecting its little pen*s.

“You’re sick, huh? Where’s your mom?” Fang Chi took off his hat and put it inside. “Come back with me. Feels like you’re about to die.”

And just like that, Fang Chi carried it home inside a hat.

“It’s too late today,” Fang Chi told it. “Chief Huang, drink some water and eat something first. I’ll take you to the doctor tomorrow.”

Chief Huang?

Did this person always name cats this casually?

How had someone with such low intelligence survived this long…

And apparently even lived alone?

Its illness seemed fairly serious. Every day Fang Chi carried it to the hospital for injections, then brought medicine home and force-fed it into its mouth.

The medicine tasted terrible. So terrible that snot and tears streamed down together.

Fortunately, after a week, it recovered. It didn’t know whether the medicine had worked or whether it simply couldn’t endure Fang Chi’s clumsy medicine-feeding techniques anymore.

Either way, it got better.

And once it got better, it should’ve left.

But it discovered it couldn’t leave.

Every day before Fang Chi went to school, he would prepare a bowl of cat food and a bowl of water, then lock it inside the apartment with the doors and windows shut tight.

It searched the entire place and couldn’t find a single way out.

It felt wronged.

It was a stray cat. A stray cat born between heaven and earth. A stray cat living beneath sunlight and starlight. And now it was actually imprisoned by a not-very-intelligent human!

Somewhat angrily, it shoved the bag of cat food Fang Chi had placed on the cabinet onto the floor.

Author’s Note:

This chapter was just written for fun from Chief Huang’s perspective, so the VIP chapter only contains one thousand words (because it can’t be fewer), and the remaining five thousand words are in the author’s notes. Everyone relax and enjoy. Tomorrow will be Xiao Yiming and Cheng Mo’s extra.

When Fang Chi came home and saw cat food scattered all over the floor, he seemed somewhat angry. After cleaning it up, he pointed at its nose and said, “Chief Huang, I’m warning you. If you knock it over one more time, I’m throwing you outside to wander the streets.”

It was delighted. Extremely happy.

So the next day, it knocked the cat food bag over again.

When Fang Chi came back, he pointed at its nose again. “What’s wrong with you? Knock it over one more time and I’m throwing you out!”

On the third day, it continued.

“You’ve got guts. Do it again and I won’t be polite!”

Fourth day, it knocked it over again.

“There won’t be a next time!”

Fifth day.

“Do you have some kind of psychological disorder?”

Sixth day.

Fang Chi stopped talking altogether.

Seventh day. Eighth day. Fang Chi still said nothing, only quickly cleaned up the cat food before opening his computer to play around.

It felt deeply confused.

Wasn’t he supposed to throw it out?

How could a human be this untrustworthy?

How could someone not keep their word!

Fang Chi never again mentioned throwing it out. Gradually, knocking the bag over became boring. Occasionally when it got bored it would still give the bag a shove, then sit on the cabinet watching Fang Chi bend over to clean the floor.

And it noticed that Fang Chi’s mood during this period wasn’t very good. There wasn’t much of a smile on his face anymore, and he didn’t talk to it much either. Sometimes he came home very late, and the scent on him didn’t smell like school anymore.

It felt Fang Chi must’ve run into some sort of trouble.

Then one day, it heard Fang Chi on the phone saying he was taking it to the hospital.

But it wasn’t sick anymore! Why go to the hospital?

Wait a second. What did “neuter” mean?

“Can he get neutered now? I’m just afraid that once spring comes, he’ll spend all day yowling,” Fang Chi said.

It suddenly understood what that meant and panicked, lowering its head to look at its little pen*s.

Then it looked back up at Fang Chi.

How could this person do this? Just because he was in a bad mood, he wanted to take it out on a cat? Neuter it? Cut off a cat’s little pen*s and that would make him happy?!

But no matter how unwilling it was, the day still arrived.

Fang Chi grabbed it and stuffed it into a cat carrier, carrying it out the door and into a taxi.

Was it over? Was it doomed? Was everything about to end?!

Only then did it truly feel despair. Inside the carrier, it struggled frantically, scratching, clawing, and yowling.

“This cat’s got a pretty bad temper,” the driver said.

Of course it did! How could anyone possibly have a good temper at a time like this?

“…Takes after me,” Fang Chi said, sighing.

Who took after you? Took after you in what? Your intelligence?!

But halfway through the ride, its savior appeared. The castration plan seemed to be interrupted by someone! Fang Chi received a phone call, then unwillingly told the driver to change destinations.

It was overjoyed.

There was still hope.

The car eventually stopped somewhere unfamiliar. Fang Chi carried it out, and it heard a very pleasant male voice say, “Where’s the cat? Take him out so I can play with him.”

Then Fang Chi’s hand reached into the carrier. The moment it saw that hand, it furiously pounced and smacked it hard twice with its paws.

Fang Chi jerked his hand back. Before it could chase after him, another hand reached inside.

This hand was beautiful. The fingers were long, and the fingertips carried a faint pleasant fragrance. It raised its paw but didn’t strike.

That hand gently scratched beneath its chin, then lightly rubbed at its neck.

Comfortable!

So comfortable!

Completely different from Fang Chi’s rough, completely un-gentle scratching!

It felt wonderful. When that hand slid beneath its belly, it sprawled across it willingly, allowing the hand to lift it out of the carrier.

It liked this man.

This person smelled good, his body temperature felt comforting, and even his speaking voice was enjoyable.

It liked how gently he scratched it. Liked the casual, light tickling of his fingertips through its fur.

It wanted to stay with this person!

Not Fang Chi!

This person!

And this person liked cats too, it could tell. It had to perform well!

It happily ate all the food this person gave it and drank the water too, meowing desperately and rubbing itself all over him.

But…

It failed.

This man named Sun Wenqu, with the pleasant voice and pleasant scent, wanted to keep it. But stingy Fang Chi refused. It was only allowed to stay one night at Sun Wenqu’s place.

Sun Wenqu chatted with it and even did calligraphy, writing “Chief Huang is beautiful,” much prettier than Fang Chi’s dog-scratch handwriting. It didn’t even mind Sun Wenqu calling it ugly.

As long as it could stay with Sun Wenqu, ugly was fine.

But Fang Chi still took it away. And when Fang Chi took it away, he and Sun Wenqu argued unpleasantly. Fang Chi seemed angry. Sun Wenqu got angry too and even smashed a bowl.

It didn’t understand what those two were upset about. The whole thing felt inexplicable.

But even more inexplicable things came afterward.

Fang Chi constantly complained at home about how annoying and irritating Sun Wenqu was, yet every single day he still went over to cook for him.

And he never brought the cat along!

A deeply unwilling human went every day to cook for another human, while a very willing cat was locked at home unable to see that person!

Why?

The human world was truly incomprehensible.

Yet as it spent its days bored and staring at Fang Chi, it slowly realized Fang Chi didn’t actually seem all that unwilling to cook anymore. At first he really had seemed reluctant, but gradually he didn’t look nearly as displeased.

But Fang Chi’s intelligence was too low. He seemed not to notice his own changes at all.

It sighed and licked its paw.

This idiot had recently been spending all his time with Sun Wenqu. Whenever he came home, he carried Sun Wenqu’s scent on him. Although faint, it could still smell it.

And Fang Chi mentioned Sun Wenqu more and more often.

Sun Wenqu this, Sun Wenqu that. Every night after it fell asleep, Fang Chi would wake it up and pet it uncomfortably while endlessly complaining and grumbling.

While acting disgusted, they still stuck to each other every day. Shameless, honestly, ptooey!

While acting disgusted, Fang Chi even hung the drawings Sun Wenqu painted on the wall. Those drawings were of Chief Huang, okay! Not you!

And he even openly said things like, “Does Chief Huang really want to stay with Sun Wenqu?” In your dreams.

It seriously had nothing to say to him.

But that state of affairs didn’t last long.

One day, Fang Chi suddenly came back looking very downcast.

Yes, downcast.

Based on its experience as a stray cat, this idiot looked exactly like someone heartbroken.

Back when it lived in the grass nest, it had seen plenty of people like this, some dejected, some melancholy, some confused, and some who even cried.

These people were collectively known as the heartbroken.

Fang Chi matched them perfectly. While doing homework, cooking noodles, spacing out, feeding it, he would suddenly drift off every now and then.

He just didn’t cry.

It felt Fang Chi must really be suffering, because it itself felt terrible too.

Fang Chi stopped going to see Sun Wenqu. When he came home, he no longer carried Sun Wenqu’s scent, and he stopped mentioning Sun Wenqu to it too.

It ended up heartbroken right along with him.

During New Year, Fang Chi got winter break and stuffed it into a cat carrier, apparently taking it somewhere.

That trip nearly killed the cat, chaotic noises, all kinds of smells, endless bumping and shaking.

By the time Fang Chi finally carried it off the vehicle, before it had even recovered its senses, it saw a huge tongue and heard panting noises.

Oh my god!

A dog!

And it was barking at it! Barking so hard drool was flying everywhere!

Terrifying. In shock and horror, all its fur exploded outward as it bared its teeth and hissed warnings at the carrier entrance.

Stupid dog! If you dare come over here, you’re dead!

Dead for sure!

At that moment, it missed Sun Wenqu terribly, his pleasant voice, his gentle hands, his warm coat.

This was Fang Chi’s home. Only now did it realize Fang Chi hadn’t been living alone at all. He had family. And a dog!

Before it could even adapt to such a drastic environmental change, Fang Chi actually set it down and ran off by himself.

Just ran off! And he even took the dog with him!

Taking a dog but not a cat!

What an idiotic choice…

While it sat there lost and bewildered, someone opened the cat carrier.

The doors to the world suddenly swung open before it. No doors or windows, no Fang Chi keeping watch.

After hesitating a moment, it darted out of the carrier. Amid several startled cries, it leapt onto a pile of firewood in panic, then sprang onto the top of a wall between several outstretched hands.

Run run run!

It ran along the wall.

But after a short distance, it stopped. So cold!

And it didn’t know the way.

Where even was this place?

There were no familiar tall buildings, no crowds of people coming and going, no cars rushing past.

But there were other things, cold, lots of trees, strange unpleasant smells, and barking dogs!

Lots of dogs!

It suddenly had no idea where to go and sat atop the wall in confusion. Was this the world of dogs…?

“Meow.”

Its ears shot upright instantly.

That voice… very familiar, very nice, very comforting!

“Meow.”

Although it couldn’t understand what nonsense the other side was meowing about, it still turned its head, because it recognized the voice.

Sun Wenqu! Sun Wenqu! Handsome Sun Wenqu! Gentle Sun Wenqu!

It immediately answered back, meow, I’m over here!

Sun Wenqu’s face appeared over the wall. Meow.

Meow. Why are you here?

Meow.

Meow. Is it really you?

Meow.

Meow. Did you bring the dog with you?

Meow.

Meow meow. Why isn’t Fang Chi playing with you anymore? Did you stop paying attention to him? Meow. He’s heartbroken, you know. Meow. I can’t even bear to compete with him anymore, he looks so pitiful.

Meow meow.

Sun Wenqu reached a hand toward it.

Ahhhhh that hand, I love that hand! To h*ll with Fang Chi! It hurried over and rubbed itself against Sun Wenqu’s hand, finally feeling that gentle warmth again.

Sun Wenqu tucked it inside his coat, which immediately put it in a good mood.

Of course, it could also tell Fang Chi was in a good mood too. His breathing was lighter, his steps more lively. It poked its head out from Sun Wenqu’s coat for a glance and yep, there was a smile back on his face too.

It shrank back into the coat and licked its paw.

Humans were so strange. Such a huge change in such a short time.

Just like that, no more heartbreak?

It sighed. Fang Chi looked so pitiful like this that it truly couldn’t bear to keep flaunting the fact that it could receive Sun Wenqu’s affection.

But Fang Chi wasn’t the only one who had changed.

Sun Wenqu had changed too.

It still remembered the very first time it met Sun Wenqu. The way Sun Wenqu looked at Fang Chi back then was different from now.

But exactly how it was different, it couldn’t really say. After all, it was only a cat and didn’t understand human thoughts. It only knew that Sun Wenqu liked watching Fang Chi.

And Fang Chi liked watching him too.

The two of them only looked at each other when the other person wasn’t looking.

Kind of crazy.

Here, its attention couldn’t stay completely focused on Sun Wenqu anymore.

There was a stupid dog downstairs. It barked all day long, happy barking, hungry barking, barking whenever it saw people. Every time it heard barking, it would flinch in fright.

So annoying!

Now it didn’t want to leave this room at all. This room was safe. The dog couldn’t come in, Sun Wenqu spent lots of time here, and Fang Chi no longer forcibly carried it away. It could freely curl up in the crook of Sun Wenqu’s arm and sleep.

Sometimes Fang Chi would come in too, reading here. Though it didn’t know if he was really reading, because he was always glancing toward Sun Wenqu.

Actually, it felt a little depressed too. It had noticed that although Sun Wenqu liked it very much, petting its fur and scratching it all the time, he spent even more time with Fang Chi.

Running together, though someone sprained an ankle. Eating together. Chatting together. Looking at each other when the other wasn’t looking. They even exchanged gifts to wear around their necks, kind of like the collar Fang Chi once bought for it that it later tore off.

Probably, the two kinds of affection were different.

That conclusion was confirmed one night.

That night was terrifying.

The entire world seemed to explode. It just kept exploding, huge booming sounds and sparks flying sky-high everywhere.

Terrifying. Sun Wenqu held it the whole time, covering its ears, which moved it deeply, though it had no idea why Sun Wenqu insisted on standing at the scene of all those explosions while looking so happy.

As for Fang Chi, of course Fang Chi was happy too, because he got to put his hands on Sun Wenqu’s face and ears.

Everything happened that very night.

After the giant explosions, everyone probably celebrated surviving disaster by eating a huge meal.

Fang Chi drank a lot and ran into Sun Wenqu’s room to steal his bed.

Sun Wenqu gave Fang Chi a red envelope. It had seen this envelope before. Sun Wenqu had put money inside and also slipped in a drawing.

This time the drawing wasn’t of it.

It was of Fang Chi.

When Sun Wenqu drew it, there had been a smile at the corner of his lips, a kind of smile it had never seen before. Quite pretty.

It hugged Sun Wenqu and asked why he didn’t draw it anymore, but Sun Wenqu said nothing, only scratched its head and meowed twice.

Fang Chi looked extremely happy after seeing the drawing and stared at it for a long time. Then Sun Wenqu drew another picture, this one of himself, and gave it to Fang Chi.

It felt a little jealous, though it wasn’t too bad. After all, life wasn’t easy for an idiot like Fang Chi, especially after he’d been miserable for so long before.

It was a generous cat.

But what happened next completely caught the cat off guard.

The two of them lay on the bed chatting, and while chatting and chatting and chatting, they suddenly started kissing.

Fang Chi made the first move. It looked extremely intense. The scene was shameless beyond belief.

Even though it was only a cat, seeing such a scene still startled it so badly that even all four paws weren’t enough to cover its eyes.

Unexpectedly, though, this shameless business never fully proceeded.

Fang Chi suddenly fell asleep.

Leaving behind a sober and bewildered Sun Wenqu.

It licked its paw. Sun Wenqu must’ve been disappointed, just like how it still hadn’t found a satisfactory lady cat of its own yet. Sun Wenqu had already gotten to the kissing stage, only for it to suddenly stop.

This Fang Chi really was hopeless. Falling asleep at such an inspiring moment.

Not even as good as a cat.

After Fang Chi spent the night hugging Sun Wenqu while sleeping, everything started developing in strange directions.

It was as if that night had never happened. Nobody brought it up again. Sometimes it even wondered whether it had simply been longing for female cats too much and imagined the whole thing.

But there was one thing it was sure about: Fang Chi liked Sun Wenqu very, very much, possibly even more than it did, and as for Sun Wenqu…

Anyway, after New Year, Fang Chi constantly went looking for Sun Wenqu, and Sun Wenqu cooperated every single time. He no longer had the same attitude he’d had at the beginning.

Fang Chi had all sorts of excuses to see Sun Wenqu. Couldn’t solve homework questions, needed Sun Wenqu to help persuade Grandpa, saying Chief Huang missed him…

Though that last one wasn’t exactly an excuse. It really did miss Sun Wenqu. But Fang Chi acted like he himself didn’t miss him at all. So fake.

He’d even stare at the fingers holding Sun Wenqu’s bowl for ages.

Later, Sun Wenqu thoughtfully came to visit Fang Chi on his birthday. The two of them went out for a meal together, and when Fang Chi came back, he looked as if he’d taken some kind of crazy medicine. Something about him just felt off.

It knew he’d gone to eat with Sun Wenqu. Even though Fang Chi bragged to it before sleeping that night, it had already noticed the moment Fang Chi walked through the door.

And Fang Chi had actually said only dogs could smell it. What an underestimation of cats!

That night Fang Chi slept especially soundly. It could practically feel happiness radiating from his whole body.

Those two were dating now, weren’t they? After all that “I look at you while you don’t look at me,” it actually felt pretty happy for Fang Chi. At least he no longer had to mutter to himself alone at home.

And later…

Sorry. It didn’t really want to remember what happened after that.

Not long after those two got together, its nightmare arrived.

That day was something it never wanted to remember again.

Even though afterward it finally got its wish and moved in with Sun Wenqu. And later there was a big courtyard, and a pretty lady who cooked delicious food for it every day. And even later, a beautiful little white female cat…

So what!

None of that could erase its memories. Never!

A tomcat with no balls sat on the windowsill, gloomily licking its paw.

For the rest of its life, it could only sit beside this sesame-paste-colored cat, only look at her like a sister, and reminisce about other people’s love stories.

Those two people really were quite happy. Even though it could never forgive Fang Chi for cutting off its little balls, it still had to admit they were very happy.

Truly depressing.
