“Why… why are you like this? Why is it like this… you shouldn’t have come to this world. You will destroy all happiness. You shouldn’t have come…”
“…I’m sorry, I… I was wrong. Don’t abandon me.”
……
“Don’t blame me for being ruthless. You must die! Just take it as me owing you, I’ll repay it in the next life.”
“…It hurts… it hurts so much. Don’t kill me, I don’t want to die… no, don’t leave me!”
……
“It’s all your fault! It’s all because of you! Why did you appear, why didn’t you just die! You should disappear! You destroyed everything, you killed everyone. Die! Die! Die!!”
“…Please, don’t leave me alone… don’t abandon me, I’m afraid… I’m afraid…”
……
“It’s all his fault.” “It’s all because of him, he’s a disaster star.” “The one who deserves to die most is him.” “Why wasn’t he killed at birth?” “Why was he allowed to live?” “He doesn’t deserve to live.” “Who will kill him?!” “Don’t let him run!” “Catch him!”
……
“Only if the red seed can bloom does it prove there is love.”
“You think he can truly accept you, this mixed-blood? You think he doesn’t despise you? No one will truly accept you, and he’s no exception. One day, he will abandon you. Because you are not worthy!”
……
Mo Xuanli suddenly jolted awake from his unconsciousness, his whole body shuddering uncontrollably as if he were on an icy plain. From his heart to his limbs, he felt not the slightest bit of warmth, a cold that penetrated deep into his bones, his soul.
The scenes from his dreams kept flashing through his mind. He hadn’t dreamed of those things for a very, very long time. He wanted to stop the images, wanted to drive away the memories, yet he couldn’t do it at all. They followed him like shadows, clinging to him, like blade after blade relentlessly slicing his soul.
Instinctively, he reached out to sense his Master, but there was nothing… nothing at all… the feeling from the dream of being abandoned by everything in the world surged back once more.
“No… Master promised he wouldn’t abandon me… absolutely wouldn’t… I can’t let my thoughts run wild. Master just stepped away for a bit because of something.”
Mo Xuanli sat on the bed, murmuring to himself, continuously using reason to suppress the mad thoughts surging up from deep within his heart.
But the redness in his eyes still spread little by little, and his gaze gradually changed.
Demonize. Demonizing could give him powerful strength, could level all obstacles. No matter where Master went, he could find him.
Demonize. In the past, every time he demonized, hadn’t Master stayed by his side? Even if it was against his will, he would still be tightly held in Master’s arms. Whatever he wanted, Master would grit his teeth and cooperate.
Demonize. As long as he demonized… even Master would no longer be his match. He could… forever make Master incapable of abandoning him. He could… lock up Master, imprison Master, make Master stay inseparably by his side. That way… he would never have to worry about being abandoned again.
He wouldn’t need to worry anymore about whether Master would despise him. After all, despise him or not, he wouldn’t be able to escape.
That’s right, he could also hold Master, kiss every inch of his body, then ruthlessly possess Master. That was what he most wanted to do, make Gu Baiqing be only beneath him, hook his neck, respond to him, his entire body filled with his scent. He wanted Gu Baiqing to face him every day, to share spring nights with him every night. All emotions could only revolve around him, with nowhere else to go.
Whether he was loved or not didn’t matter. As long as he loved him, as long as he could monopolize him, that was enough.
Yes, he was going to seize Gu Baiqing! He was going to take Gu Baiqing away and hide him in a world that belonged only to himself. What acknowledgment, what righteous path, what cultivation, none of it was needed. He wanted only Gu Baiqing… only Gu Baiqing!
Mo Xuanli’s thoughts gradually fell into madness. His eyes were already dark red, filled with a frenzied desire for exclusive possession, primal savagery, extremely similar to his former rampaging demonic state, yet faintly revealing Mo Xuanli’s inherent shrewd obsession.
If Gu Baiqing were to see Mo Xuanli at this moment, he would certainly be shocked, because the current Mo Xuanli was like Little Mo Dog, and also like Little Demon Dog. As if he were no longer two separate states.
A red glint flashed through Mo Xuanli’s eyes, and his figure instantly flickered from the bed toward the doorway.
But suddenly, the ring on his chest lit up with the power of lightning. The familiar numbing sensation spread through his entire body, instantly dispersing the demonic energy that had begun to coil around Mo Xuanli, making him freeze for a moment. Mo Xuanli unconsciously turned his head and saw himself reflected in the mirror in the room.
For a moment, his expression went blank. Those red eyes were abrupt and ugly, symbolizing an evil bloodline. Regret instantly spread upward.
What was he doing? He had clearly promised Master that even without accepting the Divine Tree’s blessing, he could still control himself. He had clearly said he would never enter demonhood. What was wrong with him? How had he been shaken so easily?
What had he just been thinking about? How could he be this despicable. Why would he think of such evil things? He was clearly someone who would rather die than hurt Master, had he gone mad? Because he was a mixed-blood, was he destined in the end to enter demonic madness, to go insane?
Perhaps the people in his dreams were all right. Even if Master would not abandon him, he was still… not worthy.
But the demonic nature within his body was still struggling against his rationality. He could clearly feel that he was about to be unable to suppress it, and the demonic qi around him was gradually converging toward his body, as if constantly reminding him of his dark side.
Feeling that he was about to be unable to suppress the urge to rush out, Mo Xuanli’s gaze hardened, and in an instant he summoned God Nine Transformations. Yet God Nine Transformations on his wrist only spun lightly once, seeming uncooperative. The red cord at its end softly and limply wrapped around Mo Xuanli’s wrist, as if intending to soothe its master.
Mo Xuanli’s eyes flickered with a fragile light as he looked at God Nine Transformations. “Please… you can help me! I don’t want… to disappoint Master. Master promised, he won’t abandon me. I believe him… all these doubts are only my own fault. I can’t make another mistake!”
With another surge of spiritual power, God Nine Transformations finally transformed into eighteen nails, just like that time in Taixu Hall, shooting straight toward Mo Xuanli from all directions.
Mo Xuanli clenched his teeth, fists tightly closed, preventing the backlash of his demonic nature, and instantly used spiritual power to drive God Nine Transformations.
The eighteen nails shot directly toward Mo Xuanli’s vital points, but at the final moment God Nine Transformations shifted its angles. None struck a vital point, yet they still injured Mo Xuanli, knocking him flying to the ground. The eighteen nails took effect, restraining his movements.
God Nine Transformations itself was forged from fragments; fragments of the God-Slaying Sword had the greatest lethality against demonic nature. Mo Xuanli was in such pain that his expression twisted, yet he did not make a single sound. At this moment, Mo Xuanli’s demonic nature eased a little, but since the vital points were not struck, the effect was limited. Even though it looked like eighteen bloody wounds, as if he had been completely nailed down, his body would recover very quickly.
Mo Xuanli weakly thought of ways to deal with it. With Master not here, he could only rely on himself to return to normal.
Suddenly, the door was violently kicked open.
A powerful barrier spread directly from the walls to envelop the entire room.
Only to see Li Xiuran suddenly rush in with his sword. The moment he entered, the door slammed shut, completing the barrier’s seal.
A voice came from outside the door. “Xiuran, let me in. Did something happen to Xuanli? Such heavy demonic qi, could it be a demon race!”
“If there’s a demon race, go protect Lou Zixiao. Leave this to me and Mo Xuanli.” Li Xiuran’s expression was extremely grim as he looked at Mo Xuanli, covered in blood. Having tricked Ji Chuling away, he hurried forward and said, “Xuanli! How are you? What’s going on?”
Seeing Mo Xuanli harming himself, Li Xiuran no longer knew how to deal with it.
“Xiuran! Stop me.” Mo Xuanli spoke with difficulty. He felt that now he seemed to absorb demonic qi even more easily than before. He didn’t understand what was going on. Had his heart demon grown heavier, had he fallen deeper into demonhood?
Li Xiuran couldn’t understand it either, how he had suddenly entered demonhood, but he believed Mo Xuanli must have had a reason. After all, no matter how difficult or wronged things had been before, Mo Xuanli had never entered demonhood. Perhaps something had triggered it. He didn’t know, nor could he investigate. He could only stop things from getting worse.
With Senior Gu not present, he didn’t know how to make Mo Xuanli recover. He could only use spiritual power to disperse the demonic qi continuously gathering around him. But after a while, it still wasn’t enough.
A powerful force suddenly erupted from Mo Xuanli’s body. Although Li Xiuran avoided the attack, the barrier he had learned from the Hidden Gods Clan, specifically to deal with demon races instantly developed cracks. Such immense power caught Li Xiuran off guard. Looking again at the nails embedded in Mo Xuanli’s body, they were slowly withdrawing, and the wounds were rapidly healing.
And Mo Xuanli’s state also seemed to be constantly switching. At times he would even mutter to himself, “He doesn’t want me anymore. He abandoned me. He won’t come back.”
Li Xiuran instantly understood something. “Xuanli, you have to calm down. Listen to me. Senior said he would come find us shortly. He will definitely come. You have to believe him. He has always protected you so much. You just fainted saving him, how could he possibly abandon you and leave you alone. Think about it calmly. Don’t be controlled by your demonic nature. Demonic nature will only make you extreme!”
Just as Li Xiuran was about to be unable to hold him down, and God Nine Transformations was being forced free nail by nail, there was suddenly a loud crash from the roof. Accompanied by a faint dragon’s roar, a black dragon directly coiled above the entire room, using an invisible dragon’s breath pressure to suppress Mo Xuanli’s demonic qi.
The demonic light in Mo Xuanli’s eyes instantly softened a great deal.
“You brat, what are you doing! Hurry and recover. I can’t hold you down for long. If you go out like this, are you planning to leave the cultivation world forever?” Ao Hang said irritably. What was going on, was this kid stronger than before?
Mo Xuanli glanced at them, his expression struggling and pained, but with the help of Ao Hang and Li Xiuran, he gradually regained control of himself.
Seeing that Mo Xuanli’s expression seemed to change, Li Xiuran rushed forward and braced Mo Xuanli’s shoulders. “Mo Xuanli, you told me before that you were unwilling to enter demonhood because of Gu Baiqing, your Master because once you enter demonhood, you will no longer be qualified to stand by his side! Have you forgotten? And don’t you like him? Could the Gu Baiqing you like really be the kind of person you think he is? If you distrust him like this, aren’t you being far too unfair to him!”
Those words struck Mo Xuanli’s mind like a bolt of lightning.
His rationality seemed to find a breakthrough, instantly gaining the upper hand. The demonic nature was gradually suppressed, and Mo Xuanli became clear-headed again. The red in his eyes slowly receded, the demonic qi gradually dissipated, and both Li Xiuran and Ao Hang let out a sigh of relief.
Mo Xuanli also seemed to take a breath from the hopeless exhaustion, trying to drive away the last traces of demonic qi.
At this moment, Three Bean, who was already lying dazed and unable to move atop the black dragon, suddenly let out a meow.
“Xuanli… I sense master.”
Mo Xuanli’s whole body stiffened. Carefully, stealthily, he sensed again… Master was here… right nearby… he could sense him now.
The demonic qi… completely disappeared.
Li Xiuran released Mo Xuanli, pulled him up, and said, “Let’s go. I’ll go with you to find him. When you see him, tell him that you can’t be apart from him for even a moment.”
As soon as Li Xiuran finished speaking, he suddenly froze, his expression unable to hide his astonishment as he looked at Mo Xuanli.
At this moment, by the riverbank,
Gu Baiqing was about to run back when he suddenly stopped in his tracks. “Strange, why did it stop again?”
“What’s wrong? What exactly are you trying to do?” Having accompanied Gu Baiqing running all over the place, exhausted to death, Half-Step Mad finally complained.
“The system reminded me of a value change. I thought something had happened, but now it stopped. It seems nothing happened after all. Could it be… that the system’s scoring is delayed?”
The demonic transformation value, which had originally been 56, had now stopped at 60 and wasn’t moving anymore. Just now, the sudden increase in the demonic transformation value was truly frightening. Gu Baiqing had been afraid that Mo Xuanli had run into some problem. Thinking that the master–disciple bond hadn’t been fully opened yet, he hurriedly opened everything. That way, if Mo Xuanli encountered danger, he could still find his way to him. But now it seemed like nothing was wrong?
“What? Sigh, forget it. Are you done? I’m closing the teleportation array.” Half-Step Mad said.
Gu Baiqing nodded.
“What did you go to the island for, exactly?” Half-Step Mad asked, closing the teleportation array as he spoke.
“You’ll know in a bit.” Gu Baiqing said mysteriously. Earlier, he had noticed that Half-Step Mad’s appearances and disappearances were very strange. Sure enough, he learned that Half-Step Mad was preparing a teleportation array, so he asked him for help to silently send him onto the island. He successfully went ashore to take care of things. Now all that was left was to quietly wait.
“Let’s go.” Gu Baiqing looked back at his handiwork with satisfaction, preparing to return to find Mo Xuanli, intending to bring Half-Step Mad along.
But Half-Step Mad shook his head and said, “I won’t go.” Because of mission issues, Half-Step Mad was effectively always stirring up trouble for the protagonists, so he felt a bit awkward inside and embarrassed to face the protagonist group.
“You’re not going to say goodbye before leaving?” Gu Baiqing asked.
“Forget it. Go back and watch you guys mess around together? Even though I’m an open-minded parent, the most I can do is not interfere and just give blessings. If you make me watch, I can’t handle it.” Half-Step Mad found an excuse and was about to leave.
Gu Baiqing was speechless and wanted to give Half-Step Mad a punch. Half-Step Mad quickly countered, what was originally horseplay, when suddenly a whip lashed over.
Half-Step Mad was startled and quickly jumped away. Gu Baiqing saw the very familiar whip and didn’t bother with the attacked Half-Step Mad at all, instead turning his head in delight.
Sure enough, Mo Xuanli was seen descending through the air, with quite a few people following beside him.
“Xuanli!” But Gu Baiqing’s field of vision seemed to suddenly shrink; it was as if he could only see Mo Xuanli. He couldn’t help but walk toward him quickly.
Mo Xuanli’s gaze was unfocused as he suddenly rushed forward, but then stopped right in front of Gu Baiqing.
“Master… where did you go… you… left me alone again…” Mo Xuanli’s voice trailed off as he spoke, as if it were merely a complaint.
But Gu Baiqing was somewhat stunned. Judging from that momentum just now, he had thought Mo Xuanli would rush over without regard for anything and hug him. He had already prepared to raise his arms.
After all, he had already faced his own feelings. Although hugging and holding each other in public would be somewhat embarrassing, he was still willing to follow Little Mo Dog’s wishes.
Yet Little Mo Dog did nothing at all, he merely stood in front of him, eyes lowered, seeming to suppress his excitement, muttering a single line of complaint.
Following behind were Li Xiuran and Ao Hang in human form holding Three Bean. Both of their gazes fell on Mo Xuanli with unclear meaning.
Being able to see Mo Xuanli made Gu Baiqing happy inside. He didn’t care about anything else, reached out to pat Mo Xuanli’s head, and said, “Didn’t I run into an old friend? I also took care of something on the side. By the way, how is your body? Are you still uncomfortable? Why does your complexion look so bad? Did something happen just now?”
Gu Baiqing asked with one concern after another. Mo Xuanli could only shake his head and say, “No… everything is fine. Master, later when we go back, I have something to tell you.”
“What is it?” Gu Baiqing asked in confusion.
“Go back… we’ll talk after going back.” Mo Xuanli said softly.
“Senior, you’re here too?” Li Xiuran also noticed Half-Step Mad.
Half-Step Mad said irritably, “You’re only noticing me now?”
Half-Step Mad looked at Mo Xuanli and questioned him, “You brat, why did you hit me earlier!”
Mo Xuanli’s gaze was unfriendly, yet his bearing seemed somewhat dispirited. “You attacked Master.”
“D*mn it, can’t you tell what’s a joke?” Half-Step Mad spat blood, then frantically shot Gu Baiqing looks, as if saying, is this how you teach your disciple?
Gu Baiqing didn’t care at all. He looked toward Ao Hang and Three Bean behind them and asked with concern, “How is Three Bean?”
“He’s fine.” Ao Hang replied succinctly.
Gu Baiqing looked at the drowsy Three Bean and guessed he must have worked hard.
“Since you’re here, perfect.” Gu Baiqing directly pulled Mo Xuanli over to the shore and had him look toward the Immortal Medicine Valley on the opposite bank.
Mo Xuanli seemed distracted, his gaze constantly fixed on Gu Baiqing, completely unable to spare attention for anything else.
Li Xiuran, however, asked, “Did senior do something?”
A rare trace of a mischievous smile curved at the corner of Gu Baiqing’s lips. He raised his hand and pointed toward the small island, at the only clearly visible object, the enormous divine tree.
Mo Xuanli felt uncomfortable the moment he saw that divine tree, and at that very moment, the enormous divine tree before their eyes seemed to sway slightly.
Everyone was startled, all thinking their eyes were playing tricks on them. Then, as a massive wave of spiritual power surged forth, like a soundless explosion, the river water surged into towering waves, a gentle breeze turned into a gale, directly rushing toward Xiayang City. In an instant, people were knocked over everywhere, and around the small island the heavens and earth completely changed color.
Everyone immediately used their cultivation to steady themselves so they wouldn’t be blown away. When they looked up again, they were instantly shocked. The entire small island was shaking. With a rumbling thunderous sound, the divine tree visibly split into two halves, as if something had cleaved it from the middle. Immediately after, it shattered further and further, breaking into tens of thousands of pieces, and finally… it actually turned into specks of light like fireflies, drifting off in all directions.
The specks of light quickly drifted across the river and came before everyone, carrying an ancient aura but no divine power, gradually disappearing into the air.
It was as if beautiful fireworks blossomed gorgeously in the sky, existing only briefly before disappearing.
Everyone was so shocked they could not speak.
Half-Step Mad took a long while to react, then said in alarm, “You just went up there to destroy the Divine Tree?!”
Li Xiuran also looked at Gu Baiqing in astonishment, never expecting that a dignified Immortal Venerable would actually do such a thing.
Ao Hang let out a snort of laughter. “Well done.”
Gu Baiqing pressed his lips together, smiling faintly, and turned to look at Mo Xuanli, seeing him staring blankly at the distant spiritual glow and drifting lights.
Gu Baiqing was like someone who had given his beloved a sky full of fireworks, and asked, “Do you like this scene? My spiritual power was completely used up for this.”
How could ordinary people contend with the Divine Tree; only someone of Gu Baiqing’s level, at the cost of exhausting all his spiritual power, could completely make the Divine Tree disappear.
Mo Xuanli never imagined that a single resentful remark of his would be remembered by his Master. His Master had not abandoned him, but instead went to fulfill his wish for him. What he himself could not do, his Master did in his place.
He was clearly the Immortal Venerable of the cultivation world, the one who should least be doing such a thing.
He could not describe his feelings at the instant he saw the Divine Tree destroyed, as if the shackles on his body had been released, and even his breathing instantly felt lighter.
“Master…” Mo Xuanli looked at Gu Baiqing hoarsely.
Gu Baiqing smiled indulgently and said, “Don’t worry, I destroyed all the barriers below that I could. What you said, let them rest in peace. This is all we can do for them.”
Mo Xuanli’s pupils trembled. Master really… did not mind mixed-bloods at all. What was laughable was that he had once doubted this in his heart, thinking that Master would eventually mind. His heart felt as if it were filled to the brim with something, and he could not help wanting to reach out and take Gu Baiqing’s hand hanging at his side.
But thinking of something, his body stiffened.
Beside them, Half-Step Mad shouted noisily, “You’re really something, did you just put on a summer fireworks show? What is this called, lighting beacon fires to amuse the feudal lords, all for a beauty’s smile?”
Only Gu Baiqing could understand Half-Step Mad’s words. After thinking about it, he supposed that was about right.
Gu Baiqing looked at Mo Xuanli and said, “What? Not good-looking? Such a beautiful sight.”
As he spoke, Gu Baiqing’s hand slowly reached to the side and gently grasped Mo Xuanli’s hand, a little nervous, a little shy.
Although there had not yet been a confession, seeing such scenery together, expressing it through action should be fine, right.
But Mo Xuanli’s palm seemed a bit cold, and his hand somewhat stiff. Just as Gu Baiqing felt puzzled, Mo Xuanli suddenly withdrew his hand.
Gu Baiqing’s heart jolted. He looked at Mo Xuanli in surprise, only to see a pair of deep eyes looking at him with complicated sorrow.
Gu Baiqing was just about to ask, but what was meant to come still came. His body swayed, and he fell straight toward Mo Xuanli.
Fortunately, in the end he saw Mo Xuanli’s panicked expression and felt the embrace holding him tightly; otherwise, he would have suspected that this brat had changed his heart.
