After Gu Heng put down the communicator.
As expected, Zuo Shihuan was still on a call on the other side, and left with no choice, Gu Heng could only sit there by himself.
As he looked at Zuo Shihuan, he muttered in his heart about when Shihuan would finally hang up and come over to see him, what could possibly be more important than him?
Definitely nothing.
Nearly bored to the point of suffocation, Gu Heng simply stared at Zuo Shihuan on the balcony and, without realizing it, became completely absorbed.
This caused Zuo Shihuan to sense a strong, resentful gaze fixed on him. Without needing to guess, he knew exactly who it was. Yet that gaze was far too focused and lonely.
It made Zuo Shihuan feel a sense of guilt, and he couldn’t help turning his head to look toward the lonely, pitiful person in the living room, as if a little rain cloud were hanging over his head.
Clearly, Gu Heng’s sitting posture was domineering and boss-like, straddling the metal sofa alone, nearly occupying it entirely, one hand propping up his dark, coldly handsome face, the black eyes glimpsed between his fingers hidden and dangerously sharp.
Like a black wolf lurking in the grass, intently staring at prey not far away.
And yet, as the prey himself, Zuo Shihuan couldn’t help but laugh.
In his eyes, all he saw was an impatient little black wolf cub, aggrieved yet enduring, looking at its owner, lips pressed shut and still wearing a sulky expression.
The wolf’s tail hidden behind him had long since started flicking impatiently.
If that wolf tail truly had a physical form, it would probably be whipping things around with loud slaps, dust flying everywhere.
Just imagining that scene made Zuo Shihuan amused; he unconsciously smiled, his light brown eyes filled with warm, sunlit, spring-breeze-like mirth. Turning sideways to look at Gu Heng, he too drifted off, lost in the moment.
Even the voice from the call at his ear faded and grew faint.
But this seemed to be noticed by Gu Heng, who had been watching him intently all along.
Seeing Gu Heng’s eyes suddenly light up as he stood and walked toward him, Zuo Shihuan snapped back to his senses in alarm.
At the same time, on the other end of the communicator, Yu Lizhu, having regained her spirits under his comfort, cheerfully called out his name, “Zuo Shihuan, Ah Huan…”
Caught between attacks from both sides.
Zuo Shihuan’s gaze became a little flustered. While nervously glancing at the approaching Gu Heng, he held the communicator and replied, “What is it, Yu Lizhu?”
Yu Lizhu answered happily, “Didn’t you hear what I just said? Ji Shenwen messaged me, it’s just strange that he asked where I am now. Do you think he wants to meet me?”
Zuo Shihuan, nervously glancing at Gu Heng drawing closer, replied absentmindedly, “That’s good then. Ji Shenwen finally replied to you.”
Yu Lizhu said with a buoyant tone, “Yes! I was worried that Ji Shenwen not replying meant he was angry with me. Luckily, he must’ve just been busy lately, he replied to my message as soon as he had time!”
Zuo Shihuan looked at Gu Heng, who had already come over and pressed close. A helpless smile flashed through his eyes, yet he still let Gu Heng wrap his arms around him from behind, holding him completely.
Those black eyes, bright as stars, were full of sly, teasing laughter.
That magnified, noble, handsome face…
Gu Heng deliberately leaned close to his ear, close enough that the communicator on the other side could probably still hear, and insisted on holding his waist as he spoke ambiguously in a breathy voice.
“I’ve already explained things to Ji Shenwen. Shihuan, how are you planning to thank me?”
Zuo Shihuan’s cheeks instantly heated up. He was truly afraid that the sound would be transmitted to Yu Lizhu through the communicator by his other ear. But he already roughly understood that Yu Lizhu receiving Ji Shenwen’s reply message was probably Gu Heng’s doing.
Otherwise, Ji Shenwen’s reply wouldn’t have been sent to Yu Lizhu immediately after Gu Heng made contact.
Hearing Yu Lizhu’s voice on the communicator restored and energetic was, of course, a good thing.
But…
Zuo Shihuan cast a slightly troubled glance at Gu Heng beside him, who was eyeing him like a tiger and demanding compensation and thanks. The pressure in his heart was immense.
If he didn’t give him some benefit…
This b*stard would definitely never let it go.
Thinking of how Gu Heng had been unhappy about him calling Yu Lizhu, waiting in the living room earlier with an impatient, aggrieved expression, yet still willing to proactively contact Ji Shenwen for his sake so that Ji Shenwen and Yu Lizhu could reconcile,
Zuo Shihuan naturally knew who Gu Heng was doing this for. Warmth surged through his heart, and he didn’t get angry at Gu Heng’s willful, clingy little gestures.
Softening, he reached out and ruffled Gu Heng’s slightly upturned black hair.
Then his hand naturally slid down to stroke Gu Heng’s cheek.
Gradually, Zuo Shihuan touched Gu Heng’s chin with interest, adopting the posture of teasing a little wolf cub.
While soothing the restless Gu Heng, Zuo Shihuan smiled and said, “Isn’t this good? Once we deal with the Zuo family matters, you’ll be able to meet Ji Shenwen.”
Beside him, Gu Heng felt a subtle surge of displeasure, but under Zuo Shihuan’s smile and touch, he didn’t resist.
He only decided in his heart that the compensation he’d demand later would be doubled!
Who told Zuo Shihuan to keep calling irrelevant people right in front of him!
He had already heard Yu Lizhu say that Ji Shenwen had messaged her, since the boyfriend had already come looking for her, why was she still so shamelessly calling Zuo Shihuan?!
On the other side, Yu Lizhu should have felt genuine happiness and anticipation at the prospect of meeting Ji Shenwen, but she hadn’t forgotten what Gu Heng had deliberately said to provoke her.
Even though Gu Heng had no evidence proving that Ji Shenwen had really appeared at the engagement banquet yesterday….
It might not be true.
But Yu Lizhu lacked confidence.
What if it was true?
What if Ji Shenwen really saw her behavior at the engagement banquet yesterday, then he would know that she had been lying to him these past few days, claiming it was a family-mandated event banquet, when in reality she had very improperly been attending her own engagement banquet.
How should she confess and apologize to Ji Shenwen?
Thinking of Ji Shenwen’s possibly disappointed and heartbroken puppy-dog eyes made Yu Lizhu feel miserable and guilty as well, and she became a little inclined to escape and afraid to face reality.
The originally anticipated date and meeting with Ji Shenwen also became somewhat hesitant and melancholy.
Yu Lizhu knitted her delicate brows tightly and said in a retreating, small voice, “Or… we don’t need to rush it. Actually, Zuo Shihuan, you can take it slow. The Zuo family hasn’t really mistreated me in any way. At most I was a bit frightened at the beginning, but now it’s already much better. I’m actually not in a hurry to leave!”
Zuo Shihuan frowned in confusion. “How can that be? Yu Lizhu, haven’t you wanted to see Ji Shenwen for a long time? You told me before that Ji Shenwen had work and hadn’t come to see you in person for a long time.”
Yu Lizhu hesitated and spoke awkwardly. “Actually… there’s really no need to rush. Zuo Shihuan, you can just take it slow. I can still text and chat with Ji Shenwen on the communicator.”
A trace of self-blame surfaced in Zuo Shihuan’s eyes as he said in a low voice, “You wanted so badly to meet Ji Shenwen before, how could you suddenly not be in a hurry now? If you’re worried about me, Yu Lizhu, I’m very touched, but I’m even more worried about your situation in the Zuo family.”
Yu Lizhu denied it. “No, ah, that’s not right… I am worried about you, Zuo Shihuan, but that’s not the reason. I’m really fine in the Zuo family!”
Zuo Shihuan instead became even more self-blaming. “How could it be fine? Yu Lizhu, you don’t need to comfort me anymore. If my father, Zuo Zoujian, does anything to you, you can directly give up my information, contact numbers, address, anything, and sever ties with me. As long as your safety is ensured, that’s enough!”
Yu Lizhu was instantly moved to tears and said with a sobbing tone, “Ah Huan, I won’t give you up! No matter what, I’m not some delicate young lady who can be pushed around. If anything really happens, both me and the Yu family behind me are not easy to mess with!”
Zuo Shihuan’s gaze grew even more worried. “If it really comes to that, you must not oppose my father! It’s fine to give up my information and sever ties with me. Father won’t really do anything to me, and…”
“I still have Gu Heng by my side.”
An unconscious trace of gentle amusement flashed through Zuo Shihuan’s eyes as he looked trustingly toward Gu Heng beside him, watching Gu Heng also reveal a warm, mutually understanding smile toward him, followed by an even more confident and arrogant expression as he said,
“Shihuan, you can just believe in me. I absolutely won’t let your father find us!”
Zuo Shihuan leaned in close to Gu Heng, their foreheads touching, his eyes full of gentle trust as he smiled and said, “Alright, I believe you.”
Gu Heng then laughed as well.
He couldn’t help wrapping an arm around Zuo Shihuan’s waist, resting his chin on his shoulder, laughing until his chest rose and fell, and under the contagion of that pure laughter, those black eyes were like a resplendent galaxy of stars.
It made Zuo Shihuan stare blankly for a moment, then he couldn’t help but follow along and laugh indulgently.
After quite a while.
Zuo Shihuan slightly reined in his smile and said to Yu Lizhu on the other end of the communicator, “So you don’t need to worry too much. Nothing will happen to us.”
Yu Lizhu felt a little more at ease, yet still said shyly with a red face, “I understand. But… but I still don’t want to leave the Zuo family so quickly. Staying here is actually quite nice too, really!”
Zuo Shihuan asked in confusion, “Don’t you want to leave?”
Yu Lizhu stammered, unable to give a concrete reason.
Zuo Shihuan showed a suspicious, puzzled expression and softly asked Gu Heng beside him, “Do you know what’s going on? Gu Heng, didn’t you just explain things to Ji Shenwen, and he also took the initiative to contact Yu Lizhu? Could there still be some conflict between them?”
Gu Heng shrugged. “I explained it. As for what happened between them, I don’t know.”
Getting Gu Heng’s answer only made Zuo Shihuan feel that something was even stranger. He asked Yu Lizhu suspiciously and probing, “Is it because of Ji Shenwen?”
Yu Lizhu finally couldn’t hold it in and admitted, “Ah, yes…”
Zuo Shihuan asked with concern, “Is there some conflict between you two?”
Yu Lizhu wanted to cover her face. “I just… I just don’t know how to face Ji Shenwen. I lied to him before, and now he knows that yesterday I held an engagement ceremony but didn’t tell him.”
A look of understanding flashed through Zuo Shihuan’s eyes as he advised helplessly, “But Ji Shenwen already knows about this. I also asked Gu Heng to explain it clearly to him, that our engagement was fake. Ji Shenwen being willing to reply to your messages means he probably isn’t that angry anymore.”
Yu Lizhu widened her almond eyes in surprise. “Ah, he already knows? But… but… it was actually Gu Heng who spoke up for me. But is he really not angry anymore?”
She paced around in a fluster on the spot.
Yu Lizhu’s emotions were chaotic and panicked. She anxiously bit her finger. “How did he find out so quickly? No wonder Ji Shenwen asked me where I was just now, and his tone was so strange. What should I do! He already knows!”
Zuo Shihuan patiently comforted her. “It’s fine. Just explain everything clearly to Ji Shenwen. He’ll forgive you.”
Yu Lizhu suddenly stopped mid-spin, her eyes darting guiltily as she released the nail she had bitten until it was chipped. “Or… I’ll tell him a bit later. Yes! I’ll wait until I leave the Zuo family, then personally confess and apologize to Ji Shenwen face to face!”
But the more Zuo Shihuan listened, the more something felt off. His eyes narrowed as he asked, “Yu Lizhu, you’re not thinking of dragging things out and still not wanting to properly confess and explain things to Ji Shenwen, are you?”
Yu Lizhu stiffened, then said dryly, “I know, but I’m not ready to meet Ji Shenwen yet, and I haven’t figured out what wording to use to say it, ”
Zuo Shihuan narrowed his eyes slightly. “Is that so? Actually, you could call Ji Shenwen right now and explain everything clearly.”
Yu Lizhu immediately shrank back. “Alright, I’m just scared to see Ji Shenwen right now. I don’t know how to face him, after all, I lied to him so much…”
Zuo Shihuan helplessly pressed his forehead and sighed, advising earnestly, “Since Ji Shenwen already knows all of this, hiding won’t help. The earlier you confess, the easier it will be for him to forgive you.”
Yu Lizhu hesitated and struggled. “Uh…”
Zuo Shihuan’s gaze sank, and he said in a serious tone, “You’re not thinking of dragging this out forever, are you?” Truly speechless.
Yu Lizhu hung her head dejectedly and said, “Alright, I’ll listen to you. I’ll honestly and sincerely confess and apologize to Ji Shenwen later.”
Zuo Shihuan’s expression eased. “That’s good. Don’t always childishly think about running away. You can escape for a moment, but you can’t escape for a lifetime, especially since Ji Shenwen already knows.”
Yu Lizhu hurriedly nodded in agreement.
After chatting with Zuo Shihuan for a bit longer, she hurriedly hung up the call and logged off.
Zuo Shihuan looked at the communicator and sighed, feeling that Yu Lizhu simply didn’t want to listen to his nagging anymore and so hurried to hang up. Honestly, none of them were worry-free.
The most troublesome one…
“My turn.”
Gu Heng hugged Zuo Shihuan without restraint, then raised a sly, teasing smile and said, “Shihuan, I helped you with such a big favor. How are you going to properly thank me?”
Zuo Shihuan knew he couldn’t avoid it, and laughed helplessly as he asked, “Then what do you want me to do?”
Gu Heng’s eyes were full of affection as he smiled. “From the beginning, there’s only ever been one thing I wanted. Shihuan, let’s go on a date today.”
Zuo Shihuan was slightly stunned. “Are you serious? But isn’t the Zuo family still sending people to search for us today? Is it really okay for us to go out now?”
Gu Heng said mysteriously, “I naturally have a way. They won’t discover us. So… Shihuan, just go on a date with me!”
Watching Gu Heng bend slightly toward him, perfectly gentlemanly as he extended an inviting hand, lifting his head a little and blinking those wickedly playful eyes, raising a confident, proud smile,
“Dear Young Master Zuo, would you be willing to honor me today and go on a date with me?”
Zuo Shihuan placed his hand in Gu Heng’s, bent over laughing, and said, “Alright, I’d be very willing.”
