In the bedroom.
Early in the morning, he had been pulled up by the restless Gu Heng to do morning exercise.
Even though Zuo Shihuan was a young Alpha who regularly maintained fitness training habits, he could not withstand exercising through the entire night and then going at it again without restraint in the morning.
Clearly the one who expended the most physical energy was Gu Heng. He did not understand why Gu Heng did not look tired at all, he could hardly tell who was the Alpha anymore.
The master bedroom was filled with only one person’s scent.
Zuo Shihuan’s eyes were unfocused as he leaned sideways against the headboard. For a long time he had not recovered, as if his entire body did not belong to him, his muscles aching all over.
Listening to the person outside in the kitchen humming a little tune while busying himself, Zuo Shihuan did not even have the strength to roll his eyes. He remained motionless against the headboard, two soft pillows propped behind his back. A dark blue blanket was draped over his body as he hugged his limp, numb waist with both hands. On his fair neck, the ambiguous reddish kiss marks had not faded and had deepened again.
He was truly so tired he could barely lift a finger.
Zuo Shihuan glanced sideways at the set of clothes Gu Heng had prepared for him and could not help showing a troubled expression.
There was nothing wrong with the clothes.
Although different from the style he usually wore at the Zuo residence, they were slightly more fashionable and youthful long sleeves and trousers. Gu Heng had probably picked a set of his own clothes of a similar size for him to wear first.
According to his usual biological clock, Zuo Shihuan would have long since gotten up, dressed neatly, and prepared to go out to work, but it just happened to be such a day…
A person who had always been strict with himself even felt ashamed of his own laziness.
The sun was already shining on his backside.
Yet he was still lying sluggishly in bed, wasting time, delaying time, even wanting to ignore everything and sleep again until nightfall.
It was not that Zuo Shihuan had not tried to get up.
He had tried several times.
But his waist was truly so weak he could not straighten it. Even getting out of bed had become a difficult matter, let alone dressing afterward.
And the culprit who caused him to become like this, Gu Heng was outside cheerfully humming a tune!
At the thought of that energetic b*stard still being lively and spirited enough to go make breakfast in the kitchen, Zuo Shihuan suddenly felt an inexplicable itch in his teeth, an impulse to bite someone. At the same time, he felt a depressed frustration of having lost in physical strength, helplessly tilting his head back to lie among the pile of pillows.
Raising his head, the golden-orange bouquet that Gu Heng had brought in last night and placed at the bedside also leaned out, as if, like the sunlight outside, it emitted warm radiance and a comfortable faint fragrance.
He reached out and plucked a petal.
Closed his hand around it.
Zuo Shihuan inexplicably smiled with heartfelt joy, then released the petal and instead looked toward the direction of the b*stard outside humming.
The aroma of food spread into the room.
Warm sunlight passed through the glass window and fell upon him, so warm that he felt incomparably at ease and relaxed. The blanket draped over him, the bed, and even the new clothes all carried Gu Heng’s reassuring, crisp scent.
Lifting his head and opening his eyes, he could see his lover at any time, as well as the flowers his lover had given him. With a light sniff, he could smell the elegant, comfortable floral fragrance and the cozy scent of food drifting from the kitchen.
Like… a home.
Suddenly, Zuo Shihuan dazedly widened his eyes in shock, as if he had never expected this word to come from his own mouth, even giving him a fantastical, absurd sense of unreality.
But no matter how nervous and flustered he felt inside, no matter how he tried to think and deny the word, he found that no other word was more suitable than home.
This would become the home of him and Gu Heng.
Finally.
Zuo Shihuan felt a trace of reality that he and Gu Heng were now living together, and that feeling made him involuntarily nervous, worried, yet also expectant.
And just at this moment.
Having not seen Zuo Shihuan come out for a long time, Gu Heng decided to come in and call him.
Gu Heng suddenly poked his head in and raised his brows with a smile. “Shihuan, I’ve already made breakfast. Why haven’t you gotten up yet?”
Zuo Shihuan immediately panicked, his gaze darting around, looking everywhere but refusing to meet Gu Heng’s eyes directly.
This made Gu Heng feel a trace of confusion. He walked in and glanced around the room. Nothing seemed to have changed, including the clothes he had given Zuo Shihuan to wear and his personal belongings, which were still in their original positions.
Gu Heng crouched down and smiled at Zuo Shihuan. “Why haven’t you changed clothes after so long? At this rate breakfast is going to get cold. Do you want your boyfriend to help you change?”
Facing Gu Heng’s ill-intentioned teasing smile, Zuo Shihuan immediately shuddered, raised his guard, and firmly refused, “I don’t want that. Don’t even think about taking advantage of me again. One should know when to stop and have restraint.”
Gu Heng helplessly raised a brow. “Shihuan, what are you thinking? Even if I were a beast, I wouldn’t make a move on you again today. You know… just now your legs were trembling. You couldn’t even lift them. How could I possibly bear to make you go a few more rounds?”
Leaning closer, he watched as Zuo Shihuan’s face instantly flushed red, his light brown pupils trembling continuously, as if resisting from the bottom of his heart the facts Gu Heng had spoken.
Gu Heng ambiguously licked his lips, a trace of cunning, teasing light gathering in his black eyes, as if in the next second he would make Zuo Shihuan relive what had just happened.
He admired for quite a while Zuo Shihuan’s overly shy and upright expression, so overwhelmed that he seemed to crash, before finally, satisfied, barely reining in his restless urge to continue teasing him.
Although Zuo Shihuan occasionally did things that surprised him by going out of bounds, the real Zuo Shihuan was still that low-offense, low-defense, proper gentleman Alpha who would shyly crash from even a little teasing.
Gu Heng returned to a normal expression and curled his lips. “If you don’t want me to help you, then you’ll have to hurry up. After we finish breakfast… well, maybe we should call it lunch, afterward I’ll take you out for a walk, buy some of your daily clothes and necessities, and go to a furniture store…”
Listening to Gu Heng speak smoothly about their future plans, how he’d already considered all of Zuo Shihuan’s needs and folded them neatly into his life plans, even asking what kind of furniture styles Zuo Shihuan preferred, Zuo Shihuan began to feel as if he were truly stepping into Gu Heng’s world, that together they were going to build a warm home that belonged to just the two of them.
“Shihuan? Shihuan?”
“Eh?!” Zuo Shihuan snapped out of his daze, realizing he had drifted off again.
Gu Heng, already used to this, sighed helplessly. “Shihuan, were you even listening to what I just said?”
Zuo Shihuan: “……” He felt guilty and didn’t dare to answer.
Gu Heng pressed, “What were you thinking about just now?”
Zuo Shihuan shifted his gaze and answered weakly, “Nothing.”
But one look at his expression and Gu Heng knew he was lying. Having suffered enough from Zuo Shihuan’s wild imagination before, Gu Heng decided to get to the bottom of it this time.
He raised an eyebrow in mock threat. “Shihuan, if you don’t tell me, I’ll just have to start tickling you again—”
Zuo Shihuan froze instantly, memories of that torturous tickling flashing before his eyes. Just recalling it made his body go soft; he had laughed and cried at once and could hardly bear it.
Absolutely not!
But the price of refusing was having to tell Gu Heng what he had just been thinking about and he could already imagine Gu Heng’s delighted, smug look when he found out, using their cohabitation as an excuse to ask for even more teasing “requests.”
Zuo Shihuan frowned gloomily, but then his eyes lit up as he spotted something and came up with an excuse.
“Oh, right, I just remembered something. I was thinking, back then, that your bed was also made of metal. That you slept on a metal bed too.”
Technically, it wasn’t a lie.
He had once wondered whether the bed in Gu Heng’s room was made of the same cold, metallic material as that strange sofa in the living room.
Gu Heng: “…?”
Who in the world would sleep on a metal bed?!
Well, sure, beds could be made of metal but no one would actually sleep directly on it! That would be pure self-torture!
Gu Heng rubbed his temples. Sometimes he truly couldn’t understand the strange loops of logic in Zuo Shihuan’s mind.
With a long sigh, he said helplessly, “Now you’ve seen for yourself, right? My bedroom and my bed are both perfectly normal, none of those bizarre things you imagine.”
Zuo Shihuan frowned in protest and muttered, “But your living room sofa is metal. Who knows whether you’ve done the same thing in your room…”
Gu Heng couldn’t help laughing in exasperation. “You’re that curious? How about we go to the furniture store this afternoon and order you a metal bed?”
The reason he’d placed a metal sofa in the living room in the first place was that he was used to the mech environment; leaning against cool metal helped him feel relaxed and clear-headed.
There was another reason, too: because of his special missions, he often couldn’t stay home for long periods. A leather sofa would gather dust and be difficult to clean, and he didn’t want to trouble his subordinates. So he had simply chosen an easy-to-clean metal one.
But after all, he was still human, of course he preferred sleeping on a soft, comfortable bed.
Zuo Shihuan coughed awkwardly. “That’s not necessary. It’s fine the way it is.”
Gu Heng looked at him doubtfully. “Really? If you’re that curious, I don’t mind, maybe I’ll get one just to satisfy you.”
Zuo Shihuan’s face flushed red. “Really, don’t! And stop standing here. Listen, I heard something from the kitchen! Go check before your food burns!”
Gu Heng didn’t move, calm as ever. “That’s probably the porridge I made for you. It’s fine to let it simmer a bit longer. What worries me more is that if you don’t come out soon, the other dishes will go cold and I’ll have to reheat them.”
Zuo Shihuan froze, his ears turning red. “I got it! I’m coming! I won’t waste your food.”
He hurriedly grabbed the neatly folded clothes from the bedside table, intending to get up and put them on.
But he forgot his condition.
The moment his feet touched the floor, his knees gave out like a current of static ran through him, making his whole body weak and numb.
He would have fallen straight to the ground if Gu Heng hadn’t reacted fast enough to catch him by the waist, pulling him into his arms just in time.
A messy, embarrassing scene was narrowly avoided.
But Zuo Shihuan’s face burned scarlet. He felt the damp warmth trickling down from his thighs, realization dawning instantly. His fingers clenched tightly.
Ignoring his own trembling, oversensitive body, he snatched up a shirt to cover himself, bracing against the bedside table as he struggled to stand.
Mortified, he bit his lip and said, “I’m fine now, Gu Heng. You can go out first.”
Gu Heng frowned, still worried. “Are you sure? Maybe I should carry you out.”
“No need!” Zuo Shihuan quickly added, his ears bright red. “Don’t! I’m an Alpha, there’s nothing for you to carry.”
Gu Heng disagreed completely.
“Now that, I can’t accept. Who said an Alpha can’t be carried? There’s no law against it, it’s just a silly social bias. And besides, I want to carry you, Shihuan.”
He leaned down and brushed his nose affectionately against Zuo Shihuan’s, his eyes gleaming with mischief as he smiled. “People also say Alphas don’t cry but didn’t you cry many times last night…”
Zuo Shihuan: “…”
Flustered and embarrassed, he tried to push Gu Heng’s face away, but in the end, he couldn’t win. Gu Heng held him close and peppered his face with kisses, one after another, each one burning like fire against his skin, spreading crimson warmth across his cheeks.
“Even if an Alpha cries, so what? There’s nothing shameful about crying in front of your boyfriend,” Gu Heng said softly, his gaze filled with tenderness. He looked at the flushed, bashful Zuo Shihuan and continued, “Besides, if you were to hide away somewhere and cry alone instead of coming to me, then the one who’d really be pathetic and useless would be me. So Shihuan, just come to me whenever you want, okay?”
Zuo Shihuan, utterly defenseless under his kisses, felt a strange happiness rise in his chest. Leaning against Gu Heng’s warm chest, he nodded lightly.
***
Even though Gu Heng’s words made perfect sense, Zuo Shihuan still insisted on pushing him out of the room step by step, shutting the door behind him with a firm click.
Well… maybe not that firm.
At least, before closing the door, he had told Gu Heng that once he finished changing, he’d come out.
Still, Gu Heng stood there, staring at the closed door in confusion.
If Shihuan agreed with him and even nodded then why wouldn’t he let him hold him?
He had watched the man shuffle along, moving so slowly it looked like he was walking on thin ice. What if he fell again?
But Zuo Shihuan had been unusually firm this time, giving him no chance at all to help. With no choice, Gu Heng sighed and turned away.
Meanwhile, in the master bathroom, the sound of running water filled the air.
Steam clouded the space, breath mingling faintly with the mist.
Zuo Shihuan had meant only to take a quick shower, but every movement made his limbs weak and heavy; he had to brace himself against the wall several times just to continue.
His black hair clung to his damp skin, hiding the flushed tips of his ears; his cheeks were warm and his breathing uneven in the thick, humid air. Alone in the shower, his silhouette blurred through the mist as water coursed down his back and legs, washing everything away.
