December 10th was also the anniversary of Nobel’s death.
The award ceremony was held at the Karolinska Institute.
Most of the attending guests came from the recommendation lists of the four major Nobel Prize awarding institutions: the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Karolinska Institute, the Swedish Academy, and the Nobel Foundation.
In addition, members of the Swedish royal family attend every year and invite foreign envoys. The remaining spots are given to media, social figures, and students.
The ceremony first presents the Nobel Prize in Physics and Chemistry, followed by the Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
Jiang Fuyue, Xie Dingyuan, and the other laureate in medicine, Albrecht Kossel, were arranged to sit together.
Before the ceremony began, the three chatted quietly in English.
“…Oh! So you two are a couple? Truly incredible!” Kossel was already in his fifties, but looked only in his forties. Chatting with the two young people, there was no generation gap at all.
On the contrary, his language was humorous, his demeanor gentlemanly, giving people a feeling of courtesy and warmth.
Jiang Fuyue had a good impression of him.
Xie Dingyuan: “Maybe we’ll soon become husband and wife.”
Kossel: “That would certainly be something exciting. I wish you success.”
“Thank you.”
After becoming familiar with each other, they began talking about their field.
A large number of professional terms came out of the three of their mouths, leaving the reporters sitting behind them, straining their ears to eavesdrop, completely confused.
Then they found a professional interpreter nearby and asked, “What are they talking about?”
Interpreter: “It should be something academic, because… uh… I don’t quite understand either.”
“……”
Stockholm local time, 5 p.m. on the 10th, which was 11 p.m. on the 10th in China, more than a thousand guests had taken their seats, and the ceremony officially began.
According to regulations, each Nobel laureate may bring no more than 19 family members to attend the ceremony.
So, everyone from the Xie family and the Han family came.
They were arranged to sit in the middle section, from where they could clearly see Jiang Fuyue and Xie Dingyuan seated in the front row.
Han Yunru nervously drank water for the Nth time: “Is it about to start?”
Jiang Da scratched his head: “It should be soon…” In fact, he couldn’t understand a single word, the broadcast was all in foreign languages, but what was being said didn’t matter. Seeing his daughter step onto the stage with his own eyes was what mattered most.
Fu Wanxiu pushed up her glasses and craned her neck, trying to see more clearly.
Xie Zhendong remained relatively calm and gave a light cough as a reminder: “Physics and chemistry will be awarded first. It’s not Ah Yuan and Yueyue yet, why are you in such a hurry?”
“Can’t I just look at the two kids?”
“…”
Little Brother Jiang and Han Heng had already set up cameras, aiming at the stage.
“Didn’t expect that in my lifetime I’d get to appear at such a high-end occasion,” Han Heng rubbed his hands. “Worth it, worth it.”
Jiang Chenxing’s eyes were also shining, this might be the closest he would ever get to science!
This year’s physics prize was awarded to two scientists, one from the R-country Cosmic Ray Research Institute, and one from Queen’s University in Kingston, C-country.
Jiang Fuyue: “…Through oscillation experiments, they discovered changes in neutrino properties, thereby proving that neutrinos have mass, overturning the world’s understanding of the internal structure of matter, as well as its view of the universe.”
Kossel casually asked what the two had achieved, and Jiang Fuyue happened to have read their papers, so she answered offhand.
“My goodness!” Kossel exclaimed. “Jiang, you seem to be quite good at physics as well?”
Jiang Fuyue: “Just a little bit.”
Xie Dingyuan chuckled to himself at the side.
Mm, indeed just a “tiny bit.”
When it came time to present the chemistry prize,
Kossel couldn’t help but casually ask again.
Jiang Fuyue: “Tomas Lindahl, Paul Modrich, and Aziz Sancar, their achievements are mainly in the study of DNA repair mechanisms. At the molecular level, they revealed how cells repair damaged DNA and protect genetic information…”
Kossel: “?” Why do I feel like she’s here to receive the physics and chemistry prizes?
Xie Dingyuan continued to chuckle.
Only to be lightly elbowed by Jiang Fuyue. “…Tone it down. There are so many reporters watching behind us.”
Xie Dingyuan: “Who exactly isn’t toning it down? Hmm?”
His tone rose at the end.
“Ahem… wasn’t it because Kossel asked? I just answered casually.”
Xie Dingyuan couldn’t help but want to laugh again.
At 12:12 a.m. China time on the 11th, it was finally time for the Physiology or Medicine Prize.
Han Yunru: “It’s here! It’s here!”
Jiang Da almost stood up, but managed to restrain himself.
Han Qishan excitedly gripped his cane.
Fu Wanxiu and Xie Zhendong tightly held each other’s hands, tighter than when they exchanged vows at their wedding.
Xie Dingyuan, Jiang Fuyue, and Kossel went on stage together. Amid solemn and majestic symphonic music, each received a gold medal and certificate from the King of Sweden.
Of course, there was also a considerable prize sum, which would be equally divided and transferred into the accounts of the three.
Jiang Fuyue stood in the middle, with Xie Dingyuan on her left and Kossel on her right. The three held up their medals and certificates, smiling at all the audience below and the media cameras.
Thunderous applause erupted throughout the hall.
