Are All You Straight Guys Like This Chapter 55

Prelude to Cohabitation Part 1

At 5:30 in the afternoon—

The door of dorm 211 suddenly burst open, followed by a loud, excited shout:

“Brothers! Family! Friends! Hu Hansan is back again!”

The room was dim, curtains drawn. A faint gray light slipped through the gaps.

Little Fatty’s voice cut off mid-sentence, confused. What the, was he the first one back?

He glanced around. Ye Ran’s and Shen Shi’s desks were neatly arranged, their bed curtains drawn tight. Before he could figure it out, Ye Ran’s mosquito net was pulled aside, and a sleepy head poked out.

“Little Fatty?” His voice was hoarse from sleep, a few tufts of hair sticking up. He blinked drowsily for a few seconds before recognizing him.

Across the room, Shen Shi’s bed curtain opened too. The freshly-awakened boy sat up with bent knees, pale wrists, fingers brushing aside the dark hair that shaded his eyes. He glanced down at Little Fatty and gave a quiet “Mm.”

Ye Ran squinted. He’d talked with Shen Shi for a long time and had only fell asleep at three. He just awoke so he still wanted to go back to sleep, but Shen Shi’s voice came, calm and firm: “Don’t sleep. You can sleep again tonight.”

“Oh.”

Ye Ran rubbed his eyes and sat up, yawning. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed Little Fatty still frozen by the door. “Little Fatty, why aren’t you coming in?”

Little Fatty exhaled heavily, his voice gloomy. “The smell’s too strong. I need a minute.”

He turned to the doorway.

Ye Ran blinked. “Huh? Smell? What smell?”

“The smell of love.”

Ye Ran: “…”

Ye Ran couldn’t help but laugh. “Come in and turn the light on, Brother Shu’s not back yet.”

Little Fatty grumbled, flipped the switch, and the room lit up.

He went to the balcony and pulled the curtains open. Cool air flowed in, the gray-blue sky stretching endlessly overhead. The clouds were thick and layered. It had been snowing in Beijing for days, but lately it had only been overcast, with no more snow in sight.

Spring was nearly here, shops were already displaying new spring clothes, and the braver students had started wearing light coats.

“Looks like Brother Shu’s not coming back today,” Little Fatty said, setting his suitcase in the hallway. He ran a hand over the desk and exclaimed in surprise, “Eh? Ye Ran, did you clean my desk for me?”

“I cleaned it together with Shen Shi,” Ye Ran said, a little thirsty, licking his lips. “Brother Shu isn’t coming today?”

“Right. He said he couldn’t get a high-speed train ticket, and the regular train’s delayed. The earliest he’ll arrive is five in the morning.”

“Five?”

Beijing University wouldn’t even be open by then.

Across the room, Shen Shi climbed down from his bunk, picked up his water cup from the desk, and went to the water dispenser to fill it with warm water.

He was wearing casual loungewear, the same color as Ye Ran’s. When he bent over, the lines of his shoulders and back flowed smoothly down to his waist. lean and powerful.

After filling his cup, he tested the temperature, and once it felt right, he walked over to Ye Ran’s bed and handed it to him.

Ye Ran sat cross-legged on the bed, wearing loose gray cotton pants that reached his ankles. As he kneeled, his pale, slender ankles, delicate and veined like flower branches, peeked out. Noticing Shen Shi’s open, unhidden gaze, Ye Ran slowly drew his feet back.

Sensing that, Shen Shi looked away casually, as if nothing had happened.

Both of them tacitly pretended to have forgotten what happened that night.

Shen Shi’s cup had two straws, one silicone and one glass. Ye Ran bit the silicone one as he drank, his lips flushed and moistened by the warm water. Curious, he kept chatting with Little Fatty: “So Brother Shu will just wait outside the school gates tomorrow morning?”

“No choice,” Little Fatty said with glee. “I reminded him several times to book tickets early, but he didn’t listen. Only remembered last week and with all the students in Beijing heading back to school, what ticket could he possibly get?”

This year, Brother Shu spent New Year’s in Sanya and stayed there for quite a while afterward.

All winter break, Little Fatty had watched him post endless food pics and selfies in group chats and on Moments, and now he finally had a chance to vent his envy.

Ye Ran couldn’t help feeling lucky. “Good thing I live locally.”

Still, Beijing traffic had been terrible that morning, parents and students everywhere, car lines stretching endlessly, jammed till ten.

After resting a bit, Little Fatty was back to full energy. He’d gained another round of weight over the break. If he used to be a small dumpling, he was now a plump bun. Opening his suitcase, a burst of fragrant, spicy aroma filled the entire dorm room.

Ye Ran paused mid-sip and turned toward him, eyes lighting up. “That smell… fried fish pieces?”

Little Fatty’s mom often sent food for the whole dorm, and fried fish was her signature dish. The first time Ye Ran tasted it, he was amazed, ever since, he ordered it every time they went out to eat together.

He’d tried frying some himself over the break, but without Little Fatty’s mom’s secret seasoning, it never tasted quite right.

Little Fatty grinned proudly. “That’s right! My mom fried five boxes this time, one for each of us. Guaranteed enough to go around!”

Ye Ran handed his cup back to Shen Shi and started to get off the bed. “Then let’s go buy some rice later, eat it with the fish.”

“Heh!” Little Fatty’s grin widened, his eyes crinkling into crescents. Making sound effects for himself, he pulled out four pieces of Xinjiang naan from his suitcase. “Ta-da! Fresh-baked this morning by my mom, goes perfectly with fried fish. Who needs plain rice when you’ve got naan?”

“Nice!”

Ye Ran climbed down from the bed, but just as his feet touched the ground, his shoulder brushed against the chest of the person behind him. Little Fatty was still rummaging through his luggage, not noticing.

Ye Ran turned around in confusion. Shen Shi’s lips were still damp, the silicone straw slipping from between his teeth. His expression was calm, his dark eyes deep as night. He leaned down naturally and kissed him.

Ye Ran jolted, his pupils trembling. “…Hey!”

But Shen Shi had already turned, carrying his cup back to his desk as if nothing had happened, his back relaxed. He started changing clothes.

Ye Ran: “…”

His cheeks burned. He let out a small, shaky breath.

Shen Shi really was… getting more and more reckless.

***

Dinner was fried fish and Xinjiang naan.

It really was perfect.

Ye Ran ate too much and decided to take a walk to digest.

Little Fatty looked at Ye Ran and Shen Shi’s slim builds, then down at his own, questioning his life choices. After thinking hard, he finally made up his mind. “Fine, I’ll go work it off too.”

Ye Ran was putting on shoes and smiled at him. “If we walk to Lover’s Lake, loop around once, and come back, would that be okay?”

Lover’s Lake wasn’t far from the men’s dorms, just right for Little Fatty’s level.

“Okay.” He clenched his fists and dug out his running shoes.

After a moment’s thought, he even changed into an all-black tracksuit right in front of them, wrapping on a headband and wristbands, fully geared up.

Ye Ran: “…”

Ye Ran chuckled. “All ready?”

“All ready.” Little Fatty nodded.

The three of them left the dorm one after another, walking through the chilly early-spring air, chatting softly under the quiet night sky.

The heavens were ink-dark, faintly dotted with a few glimmering stars.

Beijing University had beautiful landscaping, not only tree-lined avenues but also dense green shrubs. By spring, when the gardenias bloomed, the whole campus would be filled with their elegant fragrance.

Little Fatty, wearing Bluetooth earphones, power-walked with a determined expression, as if trying to burn off calories through sheer willpower.

Ye Ran and Shen Shi strolled slowly behind him, hand in hand.

By a little past eight, the three finished their walk and returned to the dorm.

Meanwhile, the campus forum had started to blow up.

——[Ugh, was on a date with my boyfriend by Lover’s Lake and ran into another couple also on a date, eek~]

1st comment: Wherever there’s Shen-Ye sugar, there’s me!

2nd comment: Eeeek, holding hands on a nighttime walk? That hits my soft spot, ovo!

3rd comment: I’m in love with the third pic. It’s going to be my wallpaper!

Unaware readers instinctively clicked open the third image.

Under the dim, scattered streetlights, the crooked curb stretched to the end of the road.

Wearing a black down jacket, Ye Ran carefully walked along it. His head was lowered, revealing only the snow-white, delicate curve of his neck and cheek. His black, messy bangs hung beside his face. One of his hands was held by the tall, upright boy beside him, while the other hovered in the air to keep balance.

The black-haired boy was very tall. He followed him step for step, hands lazily tucked in his pockets, but his head was tilted, eyes tightly fixed on him.

The whole photo was a little blurry, obviously a casual snapshot, yet it captured the essence of both figures. The sweet, romantic atmosphere almost burst through the phone screen.

The people downstairs went wild.

4L: Hehehe, high-res version (without Shen Shi!!!) is done. DM me anytime. (PS: WeChat: Yi Jiu Ba 377 Years Old)

5L: Upstairs, can I buy the high-res version of the second picture (without Shen Shi!)?

6L: Yes, don’t worry, I’m professional.

8L: I want it (no-Shen-Shi version).

9L: I want it (no-Shen-Shi version).

10L: I want it too… wait, who’s that big black rat behind Ye Ran?

11L: Holy cr*p, someone finally noticed. This black rat is in all three photos! I’ve edited my Meitu app to death trying to erase him!

12L: Speechless… could he be… a professional paparazzi?

13L: Impossible. Aren’t paparazzi all supposed to be skinny? This black rat looks like he’s got too much nutrition.

14L: He looks kind of familiar though.

15L: I think so too…

16L: +1

17L: …Guys, are you serious? Isn’t that Ye Ran’s roommate, the one called Little Fatty?

18L: !

19L: !

20L: !

21L: Bro disappears for one winter break and you still call him “Little” Fatty?

22L: I strongly demand upgrading him to the “Big” generation.

23L: “Big Fatty” doesn’t sound nice.

24L: Just admit it fits?

25L: Scared me to death. Good thing he’s not a real black rat.

26L: Scared me to death. Good thing he’s not a real black rat.

27L: Scared me to death. Good thing he’s not a real black rat.

At exactly 10 p.m.

Room 211 let out a wail: “…Damn it!”

Little Fatty clutched his phone, pounding the bed in heartbreak: “Damn it!!!”

You’re the black rats!

A whole bunch of chattering rats!!!

***

Brother Shu didn’t come tonight, and Little Fatty had traveled all day, so Room 211 turned off the lights early.

By 11:30, you could already hear Little Fatty snoring.

He didn’t snore often, only when he slept deeply.

Ye Ran, half-asleep and fuzzy-headed, also drifted off.

He hadn’t drawn the bed curtain, only let down the outer white mosquito net.

With a soft “pa,” the lights went out. Shen Shi came out of the bathroom and turned off the switch.

His half-wet black hair dripped water as it slid down his sharply defined face. His dark, heavy phoenix eyes lifted, and when he saw Ye Ran was asleep, he quietly picked up the hair dryer and pushed the dorm door open, heading to the first-floor lounge.

Ye Ran vaguely lifted his eyelids, only catching Shen Shi’s retreating back.

Sleepy again, he closed his eyes, thick lashes like a fan casting fine shadows.

The city’s heating was still on.

The dorm was filled with warmth, while cold wind howled past the windows, a sharp contrast to the room.

Half-dreaming, Ye Ran suddenly felt something strange.

At 3 a.m., the time when even night owls were dead asleep, he opened his eyes in a daze. It was a moonless night. The scene before him slowly sharpened, and he saw a figure climbing out of bed.

…Shen Shi?

Ye Ran regained a bit of awareness. With his eyes half-closed, he called instinctively: “…Shen Shi?”

The man on the floor paused and turned.

Shen Shi wore simple cotton pajamas. Something was off about his expression. His eyes were pitch-black and intense, messy dark hair falling over them. Without showing emotion, he answered in a low voice: “Mn?”

Ye Ran didn’t sense anything, his sleepy mind dull and foggy as he drifted toward sleep again: “…You can’t sleep?”

He was too tired. His lashes were damp with the tears from yawning, his lips dry and soft from the heater. Eyes closed, he comforted him purely on instinct: “Do you want some warm water… drink a bit and you’ll get sleepy.”

The bed creaked.

Ye Ran didn’t react, thinking Little Fatty had turned over.

A few seconds later, the bed was still moving.

His slow thoughts finally caught up. There were bunk ladders between the beds. One side’s shaking wouldn’t affect the other unless Little Fatty was sleepwalking.

He slowly lifted his eyelids. In his line of sight, Shen Shi’s expression was calm as he climbed Ye Ran’s ladder, only one step away from getting onto his bed.

Ye Ran froze for two seconds: “…”

Suddenly wide awake, his eyes opened round, bewildered and stunned. His herbivore instinct made him curl up and scoot toward the head of the bed, increasing the distance.

His whole body was weak and limp from sleep, voice soft and airy: “Shen Shi… did you go to the wrong bed?”

Little Fatty was still snoring, completely unaware.

Shen Shi’s movements were swift and sharp.

Like a predator hunting in the night.

He climbed fully onto Ye Ran’s bed, slipping in from the curtain-less foot of the bunk.

The night was too dark. No light inside the curtains.

Ye Ran’s clothes were rumpled from sleep, rolled up to his lower abdomen, revealing a narrow, pale waistline.

His eyes drooped, still unaware of danger. Slowly, his two thin, pale ankles slid out from his pants, veins winding beautifully like flowing blue ink.

Shen Shi’s gaze darkened. His Adam’s apple bobbed. Kneeling at the end of the bed, he frowned, expression cold, impatient, stripping off his shirt with a flick.

His body was lean and powerful, abdominal muscles defined and smooth, the lines running down past his V-line into the gray cotton pants. The pants hung a little loose, shadows hinting at something hidden and dangerous beneath.

When Ye Ran finally sensed that something was wrong and lifted his head, Shen Shi was already narrowing his eyes, grabbing his foot. The elastic band of those gray long pants was roughly pulled open by him, the white band dropping straight down, landing against Ye Ran’s sensitive leg and stomach.

Ye Ran’s eyelid twitched sharply. His sleepiness disappeared completely. He jolted awake and hurriedly kicked him, not daring to use too much force.

“What are you doing…” He was terrified and at a loss. “Shen Shi? Shen Shi, you—”

Both ankles were firmly pinned down, the soft skin of his foot touched and rubbed. Shen Shi’s expression was calm, but his Adam’s apple dipped heavily as he swallowed, making a sound like a beast before eating.

The scene from that night flooded into his mind. Ye Ran trembled all over, panicked and trying to crawl over to stop him.

His ankles were yanked forcefully, and he immediately lost his ability to resist. His half-raised upper body fell back onto the bed again.

His eyes widened further. Afraid of waking Little Fatty, he hissed soft breaths. The moment Shen Shi leaned down, Ye Ran’s fingers blindly reached forward and happened to grab Shen Shi’s hair.

Ye Ran’s eyes lit up. Both hands grabbed at Shen Shi’s messy black hair one after another.

Afraid of hurting Shen Shi, his fingertips even gently rubbed the roots of the hair he had pulled. Shen Shi’s movement of leaning down abruptly halted, and the cold, irritated aura around him inexplicably softened a lot. He lazily lifted his eyelids, leaned against Ye Ran’s waist and stomach, and quietly looked at him.

Ye Ran still didn’t understand why Shen Shi was suddenly acting aggressive tonight. All he could do was lower his voice and ask, “What’s wrong with you? Did you have a nightmare?”

Saying this, Ye Ran even felt like crying.

Who has a nightmare and then comes to torment their boyfriend?

“No,” Shen Shi lowered his eyelids. “I just want you.”

Ye Ran, completely unprepared for those words, had the rims of his ears turn red. His body quietly slid upward, away from the already-awake little Shen Shi.

“Don’t mess around…” He scolded in embarrassment. “I told you we can’t do things like that in the dorm!”

“I want to kiss you,” Shen Shi said.

Seeing his mood stabilize, Ye Ran let go of his hair and covered his mouth, whispering to him, “You can… but you have to be quieter.”

He obediently lowered himself, and the two of them squeezed into the small space at the foot of the bed.

Shen Shi’s breath was hot. The kiss was fierce and deep, his hand cupping Ye Ran’s jaw. Shen Shi’s kissing had improved, but tonight he seemed to return to beginner mode. Ye Ran couldn’t swallow fast enough, his jaw was damp, and the tip of his tongue was a little swollen, red and soft, the color deep and bright.

“Kissing with ** is still kissing.” After letting go of his lips, Shen Shi’s breathing was uneven. He looked at Ye Ran’s unfocused pupils and, unconcerned, finished speaking. Then he held Ye Ran’s waist and pressed him against the wall.

Ye Ran reacted a beat late. He panicked again and grabbed Shen Shi’s hair, tangled and helpless and wanting to cry.

“No… kissing doesn’t include this!”

“It includes,” Shen Shi said without allowing doubt. He lifted Ye Ran’s shirt and pushed the hem to his lips, forcing him, “Bite it yourself.”

His eyes were dark and unreadable. Ye Ran’s mind, muddled for half the night, suddenly understood everything in this moment. His eye corners were red, his soft long eyes misty with moisture, his voice slightly hoarse. He wrapped his arms around Shen Shi’s neck and rubbed against him.

“What exactly do you want…”

Shen Shi’s movements paused. For a moment, something softened in his eyes. He slowly held Ye Ran’s waist. His breathing settled completely. On the narrow dorm bed, he lowered his eyelids and kissed Ye Ran’s ear, red like it might bleed.

“Friday. Go to South Street with me.”

South Street by Jing University, hotel heaven.

Not only were there chain hotels and small inns, but also several famous five-star hotels.

Suites included standard rooms, king-bed rooms, themed rooms, and more.

Ye Ran’s body trembled. His eyelashes fluttered and kept fluttering. He tried to slip out of his embrace, but Shen Shi held him tightly and kissed the side of his neck and cheek where fine sweat had appeared.

His voice was as soft as a mosquito, “…It’s too fast.”

“It’s not fast, baby,” Shen Shi said, voice low and rough, breath hot as it circled his ear like he might bite it anytime. “If you don’t go book a room with me soon, I’m going to lose my mind.”

Status: Ongoing
— Ye Ran feels like his straight roommate might be… flirting with him. * 【Conscientious, gentle, polite art-department little-angel shou × aloof flower, calculating, self-bent, teasing gong His “straight” roommate is a campus celebrity — a god-tier figure in the university town. Handsome, quiet, distant — he’s the well-known aloof flower everyone admires from afar. Love letters pile up until his hands go soft; his admirers are countless, and they come in both genders. Feeling troubled, Ye Ran calls up his childhood friend to complain. After listening, the friend instantly understands: “Got it. You want to chase him.” Ye Ran: “?” Friend: “I support you.” Ye Ran: “……” Friend: “I’m super experienced in this kind of thing. I’ve chased plenty of hotties — you can tell right away if they’re into you once you confess.” Chasing someone, after all, only comes down to a few approaches:
  1. Show concern and care
  2. Be attentive in every detail
  3. Be gentle and thoughtful
…… Ye Ran struggles to explain: “Actually…” The friend, enlightened again: “Ah, I see. You don’t get it yet.” He gives examples: “When he’s sick, you take care of him — buy medicine, bring water — that’s showing concern. When he needs something, you help right away, always keeping an eye on his social media — that’s being attentive. When he’s sad or upset, you comfort him — that’s being gentle.” Ye Ran stays silent for a long while.  Then, gathering his courage: “What if… he’s the one doing all that to me?” Friend: “?” Ye Ran’s ears flush red, his voice soft: “He… he lets me wear his clothes, join the same club as him, takes me traveling with him… and… and…” Friend urges impatiently: “And what else?” Ye Ran: “When he got drunk, he hugged me and slept with me.” Friend: “Tsk.” Friend: “Sneaky straight guy.” Friend: “Pah — devious top.” …… Ten minutes later. Friend: “Plane tickets booked.” Ye Ran: “Huh? You’re coming back to the country?” Friend: “Yep.” “Romance is always most fun when you’re watching someone else’s.” Reading Notes:
  1. Slice-of-life; written in memory of my own college days.
  2. The gong is cunning and teasing, but only teases the shou.
  3. The pre-relationship tension and post-relationship sweetness are about equal — I love that silent, unspoken ambiguity before the window paper is pierced.
After starting university, Ye Ran is assigned to a mixed dorm. His roommate Shen Shi is a campus heartthrob — handsome, quiet, and considerate, which quickly earns Ye Ran’s admiration. Living, eating, and attending classes together, their feelings subtly change with time. The story’s characters are vivid and realistic; the tone is light and humorous. It gently explores family, friendship, and love, resonating easily with readers. Definitely worth a read.
