Sunday night.
8:30 p.m.
The sound of keyboards clacking thundered through Dorm 211. The gunshot effects from the shooter game pounded like drums, thumping through the room.
Little Fatty wore his headphones. He had exchanged his New Year’s money for a new computer this winter break, just over ten thousand yuan. Much better than his old one that could barely run PowerPoint.
On the screen, the game showed a first-person view, and he was shouting nonstop: “There’s a rat camping in the southeast corner! D*mn, he ambushed me! Brother Shu, get him!”
“F*ck, don’t rush like that! I’m almost out of ammo!” Brother Shu practically had his face pressed to the monitor, yelling nervously but cautiously: “Where? Where’s that turtle hiding?”
Little Fatty was about to respond when his ears sharply picked up the sound of the door opening.
He lifted one side of his headphones instinctively and turned. The door opened, and two familiar figures walked in one after the other.
“Yo, you two are finally back—” His voice abruptly faltered, his eyes suspiciously landing on Ye Ran and Shen Shi, sensing something was off.
After two days apart, the two appeared again, both wearing new clothes.
They were dressed in matching black tracksuits, loose-fitting, wide-legged pants down to the ankles, edged with three white stripes. The black jackets had dropped shoulders; Ye Ran’s collar stood upright, zipped all the way up, tightly covering his neck.
He looked lazy, his hair grown a bit longer, black and fine against his forehead. Against his fair, porcelain-like skin, the black looked darker and the white looked whiter. His eyes were tinged with watery red at the corners, long and soft. He looked exactly the same as usual, yet somehow, inexplicably, there was a lingering laziness curled in his brows and eyes.
Shen Shi, on the other hand, showed no visible difference.
Still the same cool and distant expression. What looked like a youthful, slim outfit on Ye Ran was worn by him with a cold, sharp aura.
In his pale, long fingers he carried two lemon teas, condensation misting the surface. Seeing Little Fatty look over, he lifted his eyelids slightly and said casually, “Brought these for you guys.”
“…Oh.”
Little Fatty furrowed his brows, looking at him, then at Ye Ran, confused and getting goosebumps all at once.
He muddle-headedly accepted the lemon tea from Shen Shi’s hand, not noticing the sudden dawning expression in Brother Shu’s eyes. He grinned and slung an arm over Ye Ran’s shoulder: “Ye Ran, where’d you and Shen Shi go play? We’re all brothers here, next time you go out, you have to bring me and Brother Shu! I heard the south district got rezoned and they built a tourist village. Let’s go on a spring outing during Qingming!”
Ye Ran opened his eyes and looked at him. For some reason, his delicate inner double eyelids had drooped into outer doubles, stretching naturally outward from the corners, curled inside and out, tinted with a soft red. His voice was slow, “Okay. From now on we’ll call you and Brother Shu whenever we go out.”
Brother Shu’s eyelid twitched. He felt that this black rat of a Little Fatty was here just to shorten his lifespan.
Shen Shi looked like a gentleman untouched by storm or dust, but in reality his heart and hands were both ruthless.
Brother Shu had no desire to be put on the vinegar bucket’s blacklist for no reason. He was about to smooth things over when Shen Shi spoke first, asking, “Does the dorm have hot water?”
Brother Shu was stunned. “Huh? To drink? We just filled it. Should still be heating.”
“Then I’ll go next door to get some,” Shen Shi said.
After speaking, he looked toward Ye Ran for confirmation.
Ye Ran shook his head. “It’s fine. I’ll drink the dorm’s later.”
Shen Shi was quiet for two seconds, and just when Brother Shu and Little Fatty thought he was going to the next dorm to fetch water, he obediently set down the cup, bent slightly, and spoke to Ye Ran in a low voice.
The usual faint dominance was completely gone, he was unusually well-behaved.
Little Fatty sensed something was off and slipped away early.
Brother Shu, however, felt something weird. Over the next two days, he couldn’t help observing the two more closely.
Aside from that first night they returned, when Ye Ran’s expression and demeanor were a bit lazy, the next morning, after sleeping till eleven, Ye Ran was fully back to his normal spirited self.
Compared to the previously gentle, seemingly temper-less version of him, he now felt much more lively. When he smiled, his lips were rosy, his eyes bright and pure. He grew even more affectionate with Shen Shi, often coaxed lightly by Shen Shi and going out with him for walks.
Shen Shi changed even more.
Maybe Ye Ran and Little Fatty didn’t notice, but from Brother Shu’s perspective, it was very clear: even before dating, Shen Shi’s possessiveness toward Ye Ran was already quite strong. After they started dating, his personality became even more excessively forceful and indifferent, subtly permeating all of Ye Ran’s social life.
At first it was only going to and from class together, joining the same club. But then, a few times, Brother Shu saw on the campus forums that Shen Shi had even attended Painting Class One’s gatherings. His worry only continued to deepen.
Liang Feng and Lin Ziqian had already returned to school and resumed normal classes.
Since the incident with them bullying Ye Ran was huge, Painting Class One naturally didn’t dare reject Shen Shi attending their gatherings, probably guessing he just didn’t feel at ease.
But after observing for some days, Brother Shu found that Shen Shi didn’t seem to have that intense need for control anymore.
He held tight and loose at the right balance.
Even when Ye Ran packed his luggage Thursday to go home, Shen Shi only walked him to the school gate, put him in a car, and then stayed honestly in the dorm for three days, going nowhere.
Little Fatty was cheerful and didn’t see anything unusual, after all, dating didn’t mean sticking together every day.
The fact that Shen Shi also understood this now made Brother Shu feel deeply relieved.
He observed seriously for a whole week, saw absolutely nothing problematic, but instead ended up stuffed full of dog food, nearly choking on it.
Once he confirmed that their relationship was developing healthily, Brother Shu was satisfied and shifted his attention back to gaming, slaughtering enemies with Little Fatty in the dorm every day.
On Sunday night, Ye Ran returned from off campus with a bunch of good food.
Later that evening, while Little Fatty and Brother Shu went to night study, he couldn’t help throwing himself into Shen Shi’s arms.
The dorm was empty.
The door was locked. Sitting on Shen Shi’s lap, he was half a head taller than him. His lips were soft and red, and he very naturally kissed Shen Shi.
Shen Shi kissed greedily. Once he kissed Ye Ran soft, he followed the line of his collar downward.
The weather was getting warmer, and the dorm was a bit stuffy.
Ye Ran’s skin was kissed until it broke into a sheen of sweat, along his neck, his earlobes, flush spreading, letting Shen Shi kiss him so obediently and purely. He even listened to him, biting his clothes and muffling his sounds.
The hem of his shirt was soaked through with saliva, damply curled up to his chest, pressing wet marks onto his fair, soft skin.
His gaze was unfocused and hazy, each eyelash distinct. When they drooped, the shadows curved like crescents across his nose. His breaths were fast and light, the moisture trailing down his lips like sweet juice crushed from fruit, all quietly licked away by Shen Shi.
“Why again…” Shen Shi seemed to have discovered something, pausing, then soothing him warmly: “It’s okay. At our age, it’s normal.”
Ye Ran understood nothing about intimacy. What little he knew was all taught step by step by Shen Shi. He believed everything without question. Hearing that, eyes wet, he clutched Shen Shi’s collar in embarrassed panic. “…S-sorry.”
Shen Shi carried him to his own bed. The curtain dropped, the zipper sealing the small world completely.
His tone was natural, betraying nothing out of the ordinary. “I’ll help you get it out.”
…
After being coaxed for half an hour inside the curtains, Ye Ran held tissues and wiped Shen Shi’s face. His eyes were still damp. In this narrow, safe little world, he asked, voice misty, “Am I… abnormal like this?”
Shen Shi replied lazily, “What part of you is abnormal?”
He took Ye Ran’s body very seriously, never indulging recklessly despite their age. He only helped Ye Ran twice a week; the rest of the time, he coaxed him into holding back.
Ye Ran murmured, “Sometimes, in the middle of the night, I also…”
Under Shen Shi’s influence these days, whenever Ye Ran had any concerns in this area, he would honestly tell Shen Shi. Shen Shi narrowed his eyes; in the darkness, the corners of his mouth curved faintly, not a trace of laughter in his tone as he softly reassured him, “I get that way too.”
“You get that way too?” Ye Ran was terribly troubled. “Does this mean we… should go see a doctor?”
“No need,” Shen Shi said. “Maybe you’ve been holding back too much. On Thursday, let’s go out and try it again. This time we’ll switch to another method, maybe it’ll be better.”
Ye Ran’s cheeks burned. Thinking about going to a hotel with Shen Shi on Thursday, and then being persuaded again under the same pretext, he didn’t refuse. He only asked uneasily, “Switch to… what method?”
“Don’t think too much.” Shen Shi calmly wrapped an arm around him. “You’ll know then.”
Ye Ran nodded obediently. After his body relaxed, the sleepiness hit him. It wasn’t even nine yet and he already wanted to sleep.
Half asleep against Shen Shi’s chest, he planned to get up at nine-thirty to shower and return to his own bed. Jing University’s evening study ended at 9:10, but Little Fatty and Brother Shu liked to eat late-night snacks; after eating and walking it off, they wouldn’t return until ten.
He had dozed for only five minutes before being woken up by heat.
After catching his breath, he stiffened all over and looked toward Shen Shi.
In the dimness inside the bed curtain, Shen Shi’s features couldn’t be seen clearly, only his breathing gradually deepening. Ye Ran’s eyelashes trembled. Sitting on his lap, he didn’t move. After a few seconds, he leaned in and began to kiss him lightly:
His eyes, his nose bridge, his thin lips, his Adam’s apple.
Shen Shi had taught him this, too.
His kisses were clumsy, his brows and eyes carrying a natural innocence. Fumbling inside the curtain for a while, he soon overheated himself first. Breathing a little hard, he lifted his head and asked Shen Shi, “Then… then what?”
Shen Shi touched the back of his neck, his fingers met slick, sweat-damp skin. His voice was low and hoarse. He didn’t let Ye Ran continue, his eyes dark, deep as this enclosed little world: “I taught you this, baby. How did you forget again?”
Ye Ran’s voice shrank. When Shen Shi taught him, he had only been focused on how good it felt; how could he really have memorized anything?
“…I’m sorry.” Eyes lowered, guilty and earnest, his tear-reddened eyelids soft, his wet black bangs falling messily. “Teach me again. I’ll remember for sure.”
Shen Shi let out a quiet laugh or two, lowered his head, and kissed Ye Ran’s cheek where ripples of laughter lingered.
“Alright, I’ll teach you again.” His tone was gentle, as if he were teaching something entirely proper. “First, kiss… then…”
Ye Ran’s cheeks reddened little by little, his ears flushing as if they might drip blood.
Shen Shi made teaching into pleasure, experimenting on him. Ye Ran, soft and pliant against him, had been pampered nearly three weeks, so thoroughly spoiled that he’d never once helped Shen Shi.
Shen Shi didn’t mind. He simply reinforced the memory again and again, then, on Thursday, took Ye Ran to a hotel and played him to tears all night.
He had held back for three weeks and finally let loose. He chose a different five-star hotel far from campus. The room was fully equipped; the lobby manager clearly knew him well and later sent up new clothes.
After just one night, when the door opened, the scent inside hadn’t dissipated. The air purifier was running. The man with lazy brows stood in a bathrobe, a few marks on his body. He glanced down casually, accepted the clothes, and said nothing.
It was the lobby manager’s first time interacting with this young master. After struggling internally, he chose to play dumb and didn’t report anything to his boss.
Before the door shut, he glimpsed the dim, nearly pitch-black room.
Amid the whir of the purifier, there seemed to be suppressed, urgent breaths.
On the gray-white carpet at the foot of the bed lay a long strap, something for tying, it seemed, coiled loosely and discarded.
…
Ye Ran had been dazed all night, barely able to pay back the “debt” he owed Shen Shi.
Now, just seeing Shen Shi made him nervous. Shen Shi’s demeanor was still cool and ascetic; ignoring the scattered things on the floor, he still looked untouched by worldly dust, untainted by desire.
When he sat on the edge of the bed, Ye Ran couldn’t help trembling, wrapping himself tightly in the blanket, only to be pulled gently into Shen Shi’s arms and coaxed softly.
“Baby, does it feel a little better?”
Ye Ran didn’t want to acknowledge him, eyelids drooping weakly. “Don’t talk to me.”
“I’m sorry. It’s all my fault.” Shen Shi apologized with patience, then said as if it were nothing, “But it’s been three weeks. I thought you wanted it too.”
“Only three weeks,” Ye Ran said, frustrated, not even looking at him. “If someday we’re long distance, then you won’t—”
He finished speaking, yet Shen Shi didn’t reply for a long time.
Ye Ran lifted his head in confusion, meeting Shen Shi’s cool, dark gaze.
“Baby,” Shen Shi smiled, lowered his eyes to him, and lightly massaged his waist. His voice was gentle. “Three weeks is already my limit.”
His eyes were deep, black like the sea. Slowly, he said:
“I’ve never considered long distance.”
“And you shouldn’t even think about it either. Understand?”
