Wen Qing was momentarily stunned, then nodded, “Then I’ll take you up on your offer.”

“No need for such words, please come in.”

Lin Yu opened the courtyard gate wide, stepping aside to let Wen Qing enter.

This was the first time Wen Qing had come to the Tang house since he grew up. As soon as he stepped into the courtyard, the aroma of medicinal herbs greeted him. He saw several tall stools with large bamboo sieves on them, drying herbs. Near the well, some flowers and plants were growing, still vibrant even in the summer, clearly well-watered by the owner.

There were few items under the eaves, making the place look very tidy. The couplets from the New Year were still pasted on the main room door, the calligraphy elegant and bold, almost indistinguishable from his brother’s handwriting, Wen Qing thought to himself.

“Have a seat.”

Wen Qing thanked him and sat on a bamboo stool under the eaves. Lin Yu then brought out a bowl of tea from the kitchen, saying, “It’s hot today, drink this to cool down.”

Seeing Wen Qing’s puzzled look, Lin Yu explained.

“Thank you.”

Curious, Wen Qing accepted the bowl, looking down at the large rough porcelain bowl in which a few green leaves were floating, emitting a very refreshing scent.

Just smelling it made Wen Qing feel much cooler. He took a sip, finding it cool and extremely refreshing, with a hint of sweetness, probably from added sugar. As he breathed lightly, he felt a soothing coolness.

“What’s this?”

Lin Yu, with his pregnant belly, was sitting on a high stool to avoid putting pressure on his stomach.

“It’s mint, picked by my husband. Our family loves drinking it.”

Mint?

The name suited it well, Wen Qing thought as he took a few more sips, finding he quite liked it.

“I’ll give you some to take home. You can brew it like tea.”

Lin Yu offered, seeing Wen Qing’s enjoyment.

Wen Qing was momentarily taken aback. Seeing the purity in Lin Yu’s eyes, he smiled and said, “Then I won’t be polite. I do like this taste.”

He’s truly good-looking, no wonder he’s considered the most handsome Ger in the village.

Lin Yu thought as he observed the smile on Wen Qing’s face.

“Are you home alone?”

“My husband is up the mountain gathering herbs, my mother went to Wu Amo’s house, and my father went out with Uncle Wu.”

Not expecting Lin Yu to answer so candidly, Wen Qing felt his previously troubled heart lighten.

He’s such a pure and honest Ger, no wonder Xiucai Tang holds him so dearly, Wen Qing thought.

“You’re quite far along; it won’t be long before the baby arrives, right?”

Lin Yu smiled, “A little over a month to go.”

“There aren’t many days left,” Wen Qing said, glancing at Lin Yu’s large belly. “Is it twins?”

Lin Yu shook his head.

“My husband says there’s only one, but the child is quite robust.”

A healthy child was good, but Lin Yu was still worried about one thing. If it would be good for the child to be a Ger but like him, grew up tall and strong.

“That’s great, don’t worry.”

Wen Qing, being a smart and perceptive Ger, quickly understood Lin Yu’s concerns.

“I’m just afraid. When I was young, due to my health, no children in the village wanted to be close to me.”

Lin Yu feared that his child would be isolated by the village children like he was, experiencing the same loneliness and pain he endured.

“But don’t forget, his father is a Lord Xiucai, and his grandfather is the village chief of our Xiaoqing Mountain village. Nothing will happen.”

Lin Yu was momentarily taken aback; he hadn’t considered this. “Thank you.”

Hearing Wen Qing’s reassurance, Lin Yu’s worries seemed to vanish. Indeed, his child would be different from him.

Wen Qing admired how quickly Lin Yu could let go of his worries and continued, “Besides, if feelings were determined solely by appearance, what meaning would they hold?”

Reflecting on himself, Wen Qing thought, If someone doesn’t like you, they just don’t. Having a good appearance alone is useless.

Lin Yu nodded.

Tang Feng had never despised him, and that was a fact he deeply appreciated.

“Tang Amo! These are some homemade snacks from my Amo. He made them for you to try,” a young man’s voice suddenly called from outside the courtyard. Wen Qing was startled.

“Oh! Your Amo is so skillful. Thank you, thank you. Tell him I’ll come by tomorrow to learn from him!” Tang Amo’s cheerful voice echoed back.

Moments later, Tang Amo entered the courtyard, carrying a package and grinning widely.

“Tang Amo.”

Wen Qing stood up and called out.

“Oh! Qing Ge’er!”

Tang Amo exclaimed in surprise. Wen Qing hadn’t visited the Tang family since he was a child, so it was no wonder he was taken aback.

“Sorry for the intrusion.”

“Not at all, not at all. Please, sit down. You two chat while I pack these green cakes that Zhang Amo made. We can eat and chat together later.”

Tang Amo was delighted to have a rare visitor.

“Our Xiao Yu doesn’t like going out much and isn’t very talkative. He doesn’t have many Ger companions. I see you two are getting along well. You should visit more often. Young people need to talk and socialize!”

“Alright, I also feel a good connection with Lin Yu.”

Wen Qing said gently.

Lin Yu scratched his head, seemingly puzzled as to why Wen Qing felt such a bond with him in such a short time.

“Alright, alright, have some green cakes.”

The green cakes were made from a kind of green wild vegetable mixed with a little bit of flour. The flour didn’t need to be much, just a little to bind the vegetables, making the cakes refreshing to eat.

Tang Amo placed the green cakes on the table, and Lin Yu pulled over a stool for Wen Qing.

Wen Qing picked up a small green cake, put it in his mouth, and found the taste quite good. He then took a sip of the mint water. Hmm, it was delicious.

In the evening, when Tang Feng and Father Tang returned, Tang Amo eagerly talked about Wen Qing’s visit to the Tang house that afternoon.

“I really didn’t expect that Ger to visit our house, but Qing Ge’er and Xiao Yu seem to get along well. It’s good for them to interact more.”

“Did you have a good conversation?”

Tang Feng asked Lin Yu, tilting his head.

Lin Yu was silent for a while, then nodded. “I don’t dislike him.”

Tang Feng smiled slightly, “Then keep in touch. It’s good for you to have someone to talk to when you’re alone at home.”

Although Tang Feng was often at home, he knew that Lin Yu felt very lonely when he was away. Wu De had become his eldest brother Amo, but given past events, Lin Yu, despite his kind nature, found it hard to consider him a close friend.

Now, having someone he could talk to, Tang Feng was naturally happy for him.

As they were getting ready for bed, Lin Yu suddenly said, “He comes to see Zhang Lei.”

“Let him see him,” Tang Feng said, arranging the bamboo mat. “I think he’s also someone who has few people to talk to. If he keeps coming to our house in the future, apart from seeing Zhang Lei, it means he also wants to talk to you more.”

In the village, Wen Qing was envied and admired by many for his looks and having a Xiucai brother. Some of the Gers were willing to get close to him, but their intentions were all about Wen Shu.

It could be said that Wen Qing didn’t have a true confidant. He was quite surprised to find himself having such a good conversation with Lin Yu today. It felt nice to have a friend.

So, in the following days, Wen Qing often visited Lin Yu to chat. However, this budding friendship was seen differently by other villagers with an ulterior motive.

“Do you know that Wen family’s Ger has been visiting the village chief’s house frequently these days?”

Under the big locust tree, a few women were chatting while enjoying the cool breeze.

“Who is he going to see there?”

“They say he’s getting close to Tang Xiucai’s Fu Lang.”

A Amo dressed in gray was full of disbelief. “Who are you trying to fool? When Tang Xiucai’s Fu Lang was about to get married, Wen Qing never went to talk to him. Now that he’s heavily pregnant, he suddenly starts visiting.”

“Exactly,” said another Amo sitting next to the one in gray, his face filled with a secretive expression. “I think he has ulterior motives.”

“I think so too.”

“I don’t see it that way,” said a Amo sitting on the edge. “The Wen family isn’t lacking. He has a brother who’s a Xiucai. Why would he set his sights on someone already married?”

“Bah! Just wait and see. I’m sure there’s something fishy going on.”

The first Amo confidently said.

Wu De, who happened to be passing by the big locust tree, heard their entire conversation.

At the Tang family’s courtyard.

Wu De repeated everything he had heard to Lin Yu, concluding with a warning, “You need to be careful.”

Lin Yu bowed his head in thought. “There won’t be any problems. He’s not that kind of person.”

Wu De grew anxious. “There’s a saying: ‘The heart is hidden behind the ribs.’ He never came to see you before, but now that you’re heavily pregnant, he starts visiting. He must have some sort of agenda!”

“Don’t worry about it. How have you been lately?”

Seeing that Lin Yu avoided the topic and changed the subject, Wu De had no choice but to hope that Wen Qing truly had no ulterior motives.

“I’ve lost weight. It’s been three months, and my belly still doesn’t show. I’m worried the baby might be as weak as I am.”

Wu De’s concerns were different from Lin Yu’s, but both were centered around their children, showing their shared loving hearts.

“You should eat more.”

Wu De chuckled in response. “I’ve been eating a lot, but still not putting on any weight.”

From his room, Wen Shu saw Wen Qing sitting under the eaves, drinking the mint tea brought back from the Tang family. It was really good. He had boldly asked Tang Feng for some, intending to pay for it, but Tang Feng refused, saying it wasn’t anything precious.

Impressed by Tang Feng’s easy-going attitude, Wen Shu kept this in mind. After hearing some gossip recently, Wen Shu wanted to talk to Wen Qing about it.

“Brother?”

Wen Qing turned with a serious look.

“I want to talk to you.”

Thinking of the many fragments of conversation, Wen Qing knew what Wen Shu wanted to say.

Author’s note: “Poisonous Tongue.”

Tang Feng is a well-known poisonous tongue man!

One day, a classmate inadvertently threw a basketball to Lin Yu’s foot, and he wanted to walk away with a face full of prestige without apologizing.

Tang Feng is irritated!

“Apologize!”

The boy chewing gum with a basketball in hand said, “He’s all right, isn’t he? Besides, it’s him I hit. What’s your business?”

Tang Feng grabbed Lin Yu’s hand and said, “You tell me, what is it to me?”

Lin Yu thought they had other things to attend to and didn’t want to waste time here, so he tugged at Tang Feng. Tang Feng nodded in understanding but didn’t want to let the guy off so easily.

“You’re lucky he’s okay. We’re big-hearted, so we won’t make a big deal out of this. You should go tan under the sun when you’re free. Maybe getting a tan will stop people from calling you an idiot.”

Note: this is just word play in Chinese, basically the tan is 晒黑 which included the word 黑 (black) while idiot is 白痴 which include the word 白 (white). So basically he meant to say to get tanned (black) so people won’t say he’s idiot (white).

The guy holding the basketball looked baffled: Damn! Not to mention showing affection in front of me, you still got that poisonous tongue!
