Chapter 55: The King of Hell’s Wedding (35)
The Immortal Palace had originally been a place shrouded in drifting clouds and mist, a sight that would have refreshed the heart and delighted the mind. Yet at this moment, only desolation and loneliness remained atop Chenyue Ridge, and a cold wind swept endlessly through the corridors.
Cui Yu strode forward at great speed, heading straight for Moon Goddess’s bedchamber.
His robe hem snapped loudly in the wind. His eyes were dark, his thin lips pressed tight, and an immense pressure radiated from his entire body.
Before he reached the chamber, his steps suddenly halted. He lowered his head in slight astonishment. As he raised his hand, the silver chain Moon Goddess had given him began to glow faintly at its edges. With a gust of wind, the chain snapped apart inch by inch.
Clatter—
Clatter—
In an instant, the silver chain had become nothing more than a ruined treasure.
Jian Yuntai understood at once, his brows knitting tightly.
Earlier by the stream, Lord of Dawn’s chest had been pierced by a gaping wound, yet there had been no weapon in sight. The King of Hell had slain his father—but the sword he used to kill Lord of Dawn had also vanished… That sword had been a gift from Lord of Dawn himself!
Back then, the two high immortals had each gifted one half of a paired magical treasure. Clearly, those two items had been connected to their owners. With Lord of Dawn’s death, the treasured sword he had bestowed had perished as well.
If that was the case—
Moon Goddess was likely in grave danger too.
Jian Yuntai sighed inwardly. What a tangled mess this was—impossible to unravel, only growing more chaotic the more one tried to sort it out.
Radiance flowed around Moon Goddess’s chamber. The ground was covered in a fine layer of brilliance like crushed diamonds. At first, Jian Yuntai had thought it decoration prepared for the wedding ceremony. But he quickly realized that when Cui Yu stepped onto that light, it was as if he were kicking up splashes of water, the radiance leaping upward with each step.
The closer they drew to the chamber, the brighter the light became.
By the end, it was almost blinding.
Fierce winds howled out from Moon Goddess’s chamber. Cui Yu’s white hair was lifted and pressed down again by the gusts, at times cascading like a waterfall, at times scattering like silk threads.
Jian Yuntai could see nothing. He could only narrow his eyes and follow closely behind Cui Yu.
“Mother!” Cui Yu rushed forward, trying to push open the doors, but they would not budge.
An even harsher glare spilled through the crack in the door, stretching outward like a white line. Inside the hall, red wedding candles lay scattered across the floor, and the red gauze had been torn into eerie, grotesque shapes.
Cui Yu pounded on the doors and shouted, “Mother, Father asked me to bring the incense ashes! He did not betray you!”
There was no response from within. The silence was as still as death.
Cui Yu’s brows drew tight. A ruthless look flashed through his eyes as he raised his palm and struck. With two thunderous crashes—the pitiful doors were ripped off their hinges entirely. They flew backward, smashing into decorations along the corridor, and a cacophony of clattering sounds rang out.
Even after blasting the doors open, Cui Yu still could not enter.
Jian Yuntai stepped closer and saw that Moon Goddess had set up a barrier at the doorway, smooth and flowing like a resilient membrane.
Inside—
Moon Goddess sat upright in the main hall. Wine had spilled all over the table and floor; the cup was empty. Before her stood a small bronze cauldron, within which fierce flames roared. Expressionless, she tore apart the Chronicle Book and tossed the pages into the fire one by one.
She sat sideways to the door. The moonlight made her figure appear cold and fragile.
“Mother! Father did not betray you!”
“Nor did I betray you!”
“He didn’t know the wedding ceremony was today!”
Cui Yu called out again and again, yet Moon Goddess inside showed not the slightest reaction. Her pupils were hollow and unfocused. She merely lowered her head faintly, staring at the cauldron as the flames devoured the pages—those carefree, playful days burned away by her own hands.
By the end, Cui Yu’s voice had grown hoarse, his eyes bloodshot, his face deathly pale.
The livestream viewers were frantic with anxiety:
“Can’t Moon Goddess hear him? From that angle she should be able to see Cui Yu, but she hasn’t even turned her head.”
“Maybe her heart’s already dead. She doesn’t want to hear any explanations.”
“Ahhh what do we do? I knew from the start that Do Not Speak of the Past meant this was doomed, but seeing it happen with my own eyes still hurts so much.”
“She drank so much wine… what if that wine…”
“Don’t say that, sis, you’re scaring me.”
“What do you mean? Poisoned wine?”
Jian Yuntai tried raising his hand toward the luminous barrier. His palm passed straight through it.
His expression shifted. Immediately, he stepped into the room.
Almost the moment he crossed the barrier, he sensed something was wrong.
Outside, the wind roared and chaos reigned. Inside, it was as silent as stagnant water, without the slightest ripple.
He walked toward Moon Goddess.
Her complexion was ashen, her pupils unfocused. She tore pages from the book and threw them into the cauldron in a completely mechanical rhythm, as if she had lost the ability to think.
Rustle— the flames grew higher and higher. Even though Jian Yuntai could not feel heat, the blazing fire felt like a ferocious beast, instinctively making one want to retreat.
Moon Goddess, however, seemed entirely unaware.
This continued for about three or four minutes. Just as the first tongue of flame licked at the hem of her skirt, her body suddenly trembled violently. The last trace of color drained from her face.
Then she stared blankly toward the doorway.
The livestream viewers immediately perked up:
“She finally noticed Cui Yu! Ahhh go out and ask him! Just ask and you’ll know the truth!”
“Even though we already know she’s going to die, I still want her to learn the truth. If she dies without clearing up this tragic misunderstanding, I can’t accept it!”
“Cui Yu, you beautiful man, go!”
To the viewers’ disappointment, Moon Goddess merely glanced at Cui Yu before resolutely turning her gaze away.
The moment she stubbornly turned her head aside, Cui Yu seemed to lose all strength in his body and slowly slid down to sit in front of the doorway.
Rustle—
The flames surged once more, illuminating half of Moon Goddess’s face. A single tear slid glistening down her cheek.
With a flick of her hand, she threw the final fragment of the Chronicle Book into the fire. Then she bent forward and vomited a mouthful of dark red blood.
She collapsed, unmoving.
“Mother!!!” Cui Yu’s expression changed drastically. He raised his hand to summon the silver chain, intending to use it to attack the barrier. But when he lifted his hand again, the silver chain dissolved directly into strands of moonlight, slipping through his fingers and scattering across the ground as shattered glimmers.
The silver chain was gone. Without the slightest pause, Cui Yu clenched his fists and began striking the barrier. In an instant, both hands were torn bloody, drops of scarlet falling down his arms and staining his white robes.
Bang—
Bang—
The deafening impacts continued.
Moon Goddess had already lost consciousness. Jian Yuntai’s mind shook violently. He rose at once and ran back to the barrier.
But when he reached Cui Yu, he found he could say nothing. He knew Cui Yu could not hear him. Cui Yu’s gaze passed straight through him.
Nor could he simply wake Cui Yu up.
The side quest had not yet indicated completion. If he woke him now, everything might fail at the last moment.
Jian Yuntai had always considered himself cold and calculating, someone who would place his own interests above all else no matter the time.
And yet now…
He felt a faint trace of regret.
Perhaps this shortcut had been too cruel?
Or perhaps he should have asked Cui Yu directly.
If he had asked outright, once Cui Yu’s heart knot was untied, he would have revealed everything himself. What was happening now was no different from Jian Yuntai personally tearing open the wound in Cui Yu’s heart.
“Cui Yu…” Jian Yuntai’s voice was hoarse, so soft it was barely more than a mosquito’s hum. “I’m sorry.”
For ripping open your scar, just to clear the instance.
Bang—bang—
With another thunderous crash, the barrier shattered inch by inch, transforming into gentle streams of light that curled backward with the wind.
Cui Yu staggered to his feet. He paused for nearly ten seconds before, pale-faced, taking a step forward.
Outside the window, the moon seemed veiled in shadow, and the stars fell from the heavens, streaking across the sky like meteors.
The tremendous commotion alarmed the entire Heavenly Court.
“What’s going on? What happened?”
“The stars and moon have dimmed, meteors are falling… Moon Goddess has fallen!”
“How could this happen?!”
Before Cui Yu could even reach Moon Goddess, she dissolved just like Lord of Dawn had—transforming into strands of pale moonlight that sank silently into the earth.
“Damn it! Moon Goddess really died, sob sob sob…”
“She never even learned Lord of Dawn’s true feelings before she died. I feel so awful—how could this happen?!”
“Wasn’t Moon Goddess’s death a suicide? Then why did Zhang Zhiyan later say Cui Yu killed her?”
The livestream viewers were filled with confusion.
Moon Goddess had governed the waxing and waning of the human world’s moon. The moment she fell, the entire mortal realm was plunged into shadow. In the darkness, one could not see even a hand before one’s face. Countless people lit white candles and stepped out of their homes, staring blankly at the sky, where innumerable stars streaked downward. The brilliant spectacle left everyone stunned.
When the radiance finally faded, the world was left in complete darkness.
The heavenly soldiers arrived late. Seeing the chaos atop Chenyue Ridge, they shook their heads and sighed. “Moon Goddess was far too stubborn!”
Clad in white armor, they entered the hall.
“Moon Goddess was born of moonlight itself, blessed with profound destiny. Now she has abandoned that destiny and taken poison to end her own life—”
A majestic voice resounded from the heavens, each word cutting into the heart:
“Her immortal status shall be stripped, and she shall never again be ranked among the immortals. As a self-slain immortal, her remaining soul shall be cast into the Fourteenth Level of Hell—the Wronged Dead Hell. For eternity she shall suffer torment there, to atone for her sins…”
Before the proclamation had even finished, Cui Yu turned his head, and a bloody light flared in his eyes. His white hair whipped wildly around him as he stood in the hall like a demon incarnate. Jian Yuntai had never seen such a terrifying expression on his face—not even during the first round when he had stormed in to snatch the bride.
Before Jian Yuntai could react, Cui Yu had already raised his hand, summoning clouds beneath his feet and charging toward the heavens.
Jian Yuntai’s consciousness dipped. When he came back to himself, he was already standing atop the clouds.
That majestic voice suddenly trembled slightly. “Immortal Cui Yu, stealing the Time Artifact is a grave crime! Stop at once!”
Countless heavenly soldiers surrounded him. At Mount Buzhou, at the Southern Heavenly Gate, at the Buddhist Hall… lesser immortals everywhere looked up in shock toward the same point in the sky, their eyes filled with astonishment.
“Cui Yu, don’t!”
“You can’t save her. Lord of Dawn and Moon Goddess perished in a love tribulation. Without passing the tribulation, this was their destined fate. If you interfere, you will suffer even harsher punishment in the future!”
“All immortals connected to your lineage will be severely punished!”
“High Immortal Cui Yu, withdraw while you still can!”
Before Jian Yuntai’s eyes was a chaotic vision of falling stars. Countless dazzling halos surrounded him, even brighter than before. At least earlier he had been able to see the path atop Chenyue Ridge.
Now he could see nothing.
All he could see was Cui Yu walking step by step toward a certain hall, his brows and eyes like those of a malevolent god, hostility spilling from him.
He seized a streaming-light bottle and, with a wave of his hand, repelled countless heavenly soldiers. The others looked at him as if he were a favored son of heaven who had gone astray, their expressions tinged with reluctant pity.
“High Immortal Cui Yu!” a heavenly soldier shouted. “We do not wish to contend with you and cause needless casualties. Think again—think of Yan Luo, think of all the immortals of your lineage… It’s not too late to turn back! If you seize the Time Artifact, you’ll drag them down with you!”
Mentioning Yan Luo only worsened Cui Yu’s expression. His hoarse voice echoed throughout the Heavenly Court.
“Cui Yu has three questions.”
“Ask,” the majestic voice immediately replied. It seemed to be drawing nearer. “I will not stop you. All consequences will be yours to bear.”
Cui Yu spoke coldly, “Yan Luo and I have shared sensations since childhood. Never once did discord arise between us because of it. Who sowed discord?”
“…” No one answered.
The lesser immortals who had been at Chenyue Ridge earlier seemed to pale, their pupils trembling slightly.
They bit their lips and lowered their heads deeply.
A mocking smile curled at Cui Yu’s lips. He asked again, “My father shed blood for the Heavenly Court. The year his son was born, he left and did not return for a hundred years. When he finally repelled the demon race and came back after laying down his armor, the Heavenly Court did not grant him supreme honor. Instead, it spread rumors about him bringing back a minor incense-ash immortal. Who spread those rumors?”
Within the Heavenly Court, more immortals lowered their heads. Their faces and necks flushed red with shame.
The majestic voice had drawn closer. At last it spoke hoarsely, “We were indeed at fault in this matter. If you are dissatisfied, honors may be posthumously bestowed upon Lord of Dawn as you see fit. As for the immortals who spread the rumors… you may settle accounts with them one by one.”
“My father is already gone. What use are posthumous honors now? My mother is also gone. What use is settling accounts now?!” Cui Yu’s face was as cold as if covered in frost, his voice thick with ridicule. “Cui Yu has a third question.”
“Ask.”
“At my mother’s wedding ceremony, she invited all immortals to celebrate. When my father, already deceased, did not arrive, did anyone speak nonsense in the hall? Did anyone smear my father, who had fought for the Heavenly Court for a hundred years? Did anyone turn their tongues into blades, wounding my mother with every word?!”
“You are venting misplaced anger!”
“And what if I am?” Cui Yu clenched the Time Artifact tightly and shouted, “Shouldn’t you be the ones to bear that anger?”
“…” The entire Heavenly Court fell silent.
With a resonant thud, the immortal mist ahead parted as a Divine Lord lightly waved his hand, dispersing the blinding halos.
Only then could Jian Yuntai see clearly again.
The livestream camera also cleared. The viewers were fired up, pounding their desks in excitement:
“Yan Luo might’ve stirred trouble, but I hate those gossiping immortals even more—they should all be thrown into the Tongue-Pulling Hell!”
“Ahhh Cui Yu’s three questions were too cool! I want to kneel for him—every single one hit me right in the heart.”
“No idea who this Divine Lord is, but he looks higher-ranked than Cui Yu. Whatever—just die already!”
Unlike the heated viewers, Jian Yuntai felt a flicker of shock.
He did not know if it was his imagination, but when the Divine Lord descended, it seemed as though he glanced at him briefly. Their eyes even met for a moment before the Divine Lord shifted his gaze away and looked toward Cui Yu, who had fallen into a frenzy of divine consciousness.
“High Immortal Cui Yu, Lord of Dawn and Moon Goddess have already passed, returning to dawnlight and moonlight. Even if you steal the Time Artifact, you will only reverse a few hours at most. This is heaven’s destined course. You have your own destiny as well. You cannot save Lord of Dawn.”
Cui Yu stared at him without blinking, speaking each word distinctly: “At the very least, I can save my mother.”
“Oh?” The Divine Lord’s gaze turned complicated. “You may try and see whether you can save Moon Goddess. Let me advise you—if you return the Time Artifact now, in the future you may ascend to an even higher immortal rank, perhaps even enter the divine register and stand above the immortals. But if you refuse… you will be defying heaven and altering fate, abandoning your own bright and promising destiny.”
“As for whether that will be good or bad…”
This time it was definitely not Jian Yuntai’s imagination—the Divine Lord glanced at him again!
Even the livestream viewers noticed it.
“Damn, that scared me. It felt just like back at a concert when your face suddenly pops up on the big screen.”
“Did he just spot Jian Dadan?”
“Relax, sisters. If he wanted to say something, he would have already. But… isn’t this a dream? Could Sun Bin be confusing his own skill, thinking it’s a dream, when in fact he’s witnessing the past across time?”
“Oh my god, doesn’t that mean he could change everything? Well… Jian Dadan can’t change anything at this point, but seriously, Sun Bin’s skill is terrifying. No wonder he’s a Sinister Ghost Type—a rare Sinister in the world.”
“You’re off-topic! Focus!” The scrolling comments reminded them, and the viewers finally snapped back to attention.
Was Cui Yu trying to reverse time?
The answer was yes.
Cui Yu was already exhausted from dealing with the countless immortals of the Heavenly Court. He cast a cold glance at the Divine Lord and said, “The gods are treacherous and self-serving, caring only for tributes from mortals. Even those who have ascended cannot shed the flaws of humanity. I do not wish to look at your disgusting faces for even a moment, and I do not wish to stay in this court for a single second. Want to punish me? Make it heavier, then!”
Without waiting for the Divine Lord to stop him, Cui Yu violently reversed the Time Artifact. The sand within it flowed backward.
He slammed his palm again, shattering the Time Artifact.
The heavenly soldiers reacted as if struck by a thunderbolt from the Nine Heavens:
“High Immortal Cui Yu, you must not destroy the Time Artifact!”
“This is rebellion!”
“The Heavenly Realm is doomed, doomed!”
From every direction came screams of shock. Some immortals reverted to their elemental forms as grass and dust, others returned from adult appearances to their childhood forms. Chaos erupted everywhere.
In the mortal realm, waterfalls ran backward into mountains and rivers, houses turned to dust in the wind. People stared at the sky with trembling fear. Thunderclouds roiled, lightning and rain struck simultaneously, and even the golden sunbird rose among the storm clouds. For a brief moment, the sun and moon shone together.
Amid the chaos, the Divine Lord sighed softly, regret in his voice: “Cui Yu, I thought you would become a new god, but you chose a path different from mine. I hope… you get what you wish for.”
Boom! Boom!
Boom! Boom!
The Time Artifact shattered, and time itself flowed backward.
Jian Yuntai’s body shot upward, flying toward a tunnel that suddenly appeared in the sky. Before his consciousness plunged into darkness, he saw the stubborn resolve on Cui Yu’s youthful face and the Divine Lord behind him—
“You are his new destiny,” the Divine Lord said solemnly.
※※※
The streets were packed with people. Armored vehicles were draped in red ribbons and all sorts of decorations. Like wedding cars, their sunroofs were open. Sun Bin leaned his upper body out of a sunroof, waving excitedly to the crowd lining the streets.
“Thank you to the Alliance! Thank you to my political elite dad, and most importantly, thanks to the Livestream Team for the twists and turns my streamers went through… Without them, I, Sun Bin, could never have come out alive!”
Passersby whistled, cheering him even louder. “Great! Sun Bin made it out alive!”
The engines roared as Sun Bin returned to his luxury mansion. His beloved political elite dad stood there, eyes red, tears brimming. “Child! You’ve finally come back! I’ve prepared nine hundred and ninety-nine roast chickens—your favorite!”
Sun Bin sprinted forward, throwing himself into a massive hug with his dad. Both of them cried, holding each other tightly.
They entered the mansion.
Inside was a dining table at least a hundred meters long, roast chickens covered with silver domes. Even before getting close, the aroma pierced their noses.
Sun Bin, overwhelmed with gratitude, trembled as he approached the roast chickens. Just as he reached to lift a dome, his dad slammed the table, scolding fiercely: “You’re twenty-six years old! When I was your age, you’d be drooling over beautiful women on the street. What about your kid?”
Sun Bin froze. “What kid?”
“Isn’t there Zhang Zhiyan in the instance? I watched the livestream where the streamer saved you. You hadn’t consummated, but before that, how could you have survived?” His dad slammed the table again, shaking the roast chickens violently, shouting in anger: “Didn’t Zhang Zhiyan give you a child?!”
Sun Bin was more shocked. “Zhang Zhiyan is a man.”
His dad barked, “Then didn’t you give him a child?”
Sun Bin panicked. “I’m a man too!”
His dad summoned over a hundred men in sunglasses and sighed. “If you don’t hand over the child, you’ll never eat roast chicken again.”
“???” Sun Bin was dumbstruck. What child? Where did this child come from? He had no idea he was pregnant. Wait… when was the child even born? What the hell is going on?!
His dad mourned. “Stop hiding it. The child has come to call me grandfather.”
Sun Bin’s voice trembled. “Wha… what?!”
As his mind reeled in fear and confusion, his dad’s arms suddenly grew many times larger. With a roar, he slammed the hundred-meter-long table over—
For a moment, the entire mansion was filled with flying roast chickens, oil splattering everywhere. Sun Bin dodged frantically, slipping on a dome and landing on the floor with a ‘slip’ sound.
“Want to be my dad?” Jian Yuntai sat under the table facing him, holding a bloodstained knife, smiling with gentle warmth. “I’ll drain you dry.”
“Ahhhhh! Aaaahhh!” Sun Bin screamed, flinging himself onto the bed with a loud ‘clang’.
Then he collapsed like a corpse under the bed.
The mansion was gone, the roast chickens were gone… but Jian Yuntai was still there!
A shadow—this was an enormous shadow. He had only accidentally fallen asleep, yet even in his nightmare, Jian Yuntai appeared.
Sun Bin nearly cried. Before tears could even fall, his body shuddered.
—Why was the bed vibrating like this?!
He thought the two on the bed had woken, but after waiting, no sound came. He braved a look and saw the two lying properly on the bed, at least half a meter apart.
The bowl of water in the middle rippled violently, splashing onto their robes.
“Damn.” Sun Bin watched for a moment, realizing the tremor came from Cui Yu. The immense pressure from him was shaking the bed frame nonstop.
Nothing like this had ever happened before! What past incident could make Cui Yu behave so unusually?
Sun Bin hesitated but did not stop using his skill. Outside, ghost officials whispered:
“So intense!”
“I can hear the bed shaking.”
“The shaking hasn’t stopped for so long, and it’s almost dawn. These two really know how to make a scene.”
“Pfft—” Sun Bin laughed without holding back. He flicked a bit of water at Jian Yuntai with his finger and snickered, “So fierce! If you keep being fierce at me, you’re still just a little bottom!”
To avoid being noticed by the ghost officials outside—or in case the two on the bed suddenly woke—Sun Bin quickly shrank back under the bed.
But this time, his eyes were wide open, staring at the bed frame with full alertness. No matter what, he didn’t dare to drift off again.
……
……
When Jian Yuntai woke again, everything had calmed. Clouds and mist swirled as Cui Yu raced toward Lord of Dawn.
He stomped his foot and changed direction.
Then he headed for Chenyue Ridge.
Lord of Dawn could no longer be saved, but at least Moon Goddess still could.
This time, Cui Yu arrived at Chenyue Ridge a full two hours earlier than before.
Moonlight bathed the valley. Mist curled through the air, and the sound of celestial music echoed continually.
Immortals floated through the valley, excitedly hanging red silk ribbons on ancient trees.
Cui Yu grabbed one of the immortals and asked, “What hour is it?”
The immortal, seeing the divine-like majesty on Cui Yu’s face, blushed and stammered, “W-what?”
“Has the Zi hour passed?”
“Two quarters to go before Zi hour.”
Thirty more minutes.
Only then did Cui Yu’s pale face lighten slightly, no longer as panicked as before. But he didn’t slow down—he actually moved faster than before.
Almost in a rush, he stormed into the main hall.
‘Bang!’ The doors were kicked open.
The immortals inside turned fearfully, seeing the assembled guests. Who else could still arrive at this point?
They saw Cui Yu.
Several male and female immortals had gathered at the front of the hall, backs to the door, chatting and laughing. “Lord of Dawn’s probably still enjoying the spring night…”
Before they could finish, Cui Yu swung his sleeve violently. Silver chains shot from his hand, ensnaring the group.
The hall, once calm as a lake, erupted like a boulder thrown into still waters. Screams of terror filled the air.
“High Immortal Cui Yu, what are you doing?!”
“Release your weapons! They’ll die!”
“Moon Goddess, please try to stop High Immortal Cui Yu!”
The Moon Goddess, clad in wedding robes, looked at Cui Yu in stunned silence. Before she could step forward, Cui Yu retracted the chains with brutal force. ‘Thud, thud, thud’—one after another.
The immortals’ corpses fell within the hall, quickly transforming into boulders, sacred herbs, and other spiritual objects, scattering as flying ashes throughout.
“Heavens! Has High Immortal Cui Yu gone mad?!” The immortals panicked and fled. Any attempts to reason were useless—there wasn’t even time to escape safely.
In Moon Goddess’s astonished gaze, within just a few minutes, the guests in the hall h ad vanished, fleeing kilometers beyond the sky.
“…” The hall was left in a mess, completely silent.
After a long pause, Moon Goddess finally realized what had happened. She hurried down the steps and asked, dumbfounded, “Why did you kill them?”
Cui Yu turned, a slight redness at the corner of his eyes.
“They deserved it.”
“Killing only increases karma…” Moon Goddess started to lecture, but Cui Yu interrupted, as if he couldn’t bear it: “Father knew you would think that, which is why he never told you anything.”
“…?” Moon Goddess looked puzzled.
The livestream viewers were anxious and restless. Only now did they remember to post comments:
“Tell Moon Goddess!!!”
“Wuwuwu… Cui Yu has given up becoming a god, trying to defy fate to save Moon Goddess… why hasn’t he succeeded?”
“Didn’t he… kill his mother?”
Jian Yuntai, standing beside Cui Yu, could clearly see every subtle expression on his face.
To him, Cui Yu seemed not to want to mention reversing time at all—perhaps he thought it wasn’t worth bringing up. After a pause, he spoke:
“Father never intended to betray you. Neither did I. Bringing back incense-ash lesser immortal was only to use her as a vessel to transfer shared senses. Taking a concubine was just to stabilize the red string. Only by stabilizing it could the chance to transfer shared senses increase.
“He wanted to hide it from you—not hiding the concubine herself, but hiding his decision to kill Yan Xiang. So from the moment he brought her back, he instructed me and her never to tell you. He knew you would oppose it fiercely, and if the shared senses weren’t resolved, you would fall into even greater mental strain.”
This was perhaps the longest thing Cui Yu had ever said, each sentence making Moon Goddess’s expression shift slightly.
When he finished, her face was filled with daze and hesitation. “He… he really thought that way?”
“Father has already killed Yan Xiang. He never intended to betray you,” Cui Yu emphasized repeatedly. “Never.”
“I see.” Moon Goddess finally smiled for the first time today, clearly moved. But soon, her expression showed reluctance and resistance. “Yan Xiang was just a child… your father was too…”
Cui Yu pressed his lips tightly.
This explained why Lord of Dawn had not wanted to tell Moon Goddess. Their relationship had been fraught, and they knew each other too well.
Lord of Dawn knew Moon Goddess would resist strongly. Even if the shared senses were removed, she might develop a new obsession, thinking they had used innocent life to resolve the shared senses—which was no different from transferring them to Cui Yu and Yan Luo—causing a new round of internal struggle.
Because he knew this, Lord of Dawn didn’t dare tell her.
Hiding it, hiding it… ultimately led to tragedy.
A breeze brushed past the red candles, casting shadows on the hall walls like a massive, terrifying beast.
In the silence, Moon Goddess asked with doubt, “Why didn’t Lord of Dawn come and tell me himself?”
“…………” Cui Yu was unusually silent.
Moon Goddess looked at him in confusion, then turned to the mountains and rivers outside the window. Half of the living beings seemed despondent, as if covered by a gray haze.
Watching, she suddenly understood. She stepped back several paces onto the stairs, trembling.
“How… how did he die?”
Yan Luo killed him. Jian Yuntai whispered beside her.
Cui Yu paused for a long moment, lost in thought. He pressed his lips together and said, “Father died from retaliation by the demons. One strike ended it—no suffering. He became a streak of morning light at the edge of the sky.”
Jian Yuntai was stunned. The livestream viewers gasped in astonishment:
“Why didn’t Cui Yu say Yan Luo killed him?!”
“Are you kidding? Saying it was Yan Luo now wouldn’t hurt Yan Luo, it would only hurt Moon Goddess.”
“When I looked at the Chronicle, it said Cui Yu never liked to lie, often causing trouble because of it. Who knew… he actually lied.”
“Moon Goddess does seem much more at ease now.”
Under countless gazes, Moon Goddess trembled, tears streaming like a fountain, but a genuine, joyful smile appeared on her lips. She declared loudly:
“Your father spent his life fighting the demons. Now that he died at their hands, he would not regret it. If it were me, I too would fight the demons to the death, honoring your father’s legacy!”
She turned her back, gazing out the window with a resolute expression. “Have you ended the shared senses?”
“…Yes,” Cui Yu replied.
“That’s good, that’s good!” Moon Goddess’s final lingering attachment had dissolved. She spoke softly, “You may leave now. I need to rest.”
Cui Yu frowned at her back but did not move.
About ten minutes later, Moon Goddess still hadn’t looked back. Perhaps in her flustered state, she assumed Cui Yu had already left. She even cupped her hand and pinched out a black pill she had prepared in advance, ready to drop it into her wine and drink it.
Rustle—
A sound of air being cut.
A beam of light split the wine cup in her hand, the liquid tracing a graceful arc in the moonlight. Moon Goddess froze and looked back at Cui Yu. “Y-You… why haven’t you left?”
“Mother, had you not already made up your mind?” Cui Yu asked in a low voice.
A gentle smile appeared on Moon Goddess’s lips. She sighed, “Lord of Dawn is dead, and I am unwilling to live alone. Yu’er, immortals have their fate. You needn’t worry. He became the morning light, I accompany the moon—reincarnating in time. Perhaps tens of thousands of years from now, we will meet again.”
“Immortals who commit suicide are sent to the Fourteenth Layer of Hell for unjust deaths. They suffer for eternity, barred from reincarnation.”
Cui Yu’s gaze remained calm, but the redness at the corners of his eyes betrayed him.
The livestream viewers almost fell to their knees: “Cui Yu has been honest since childhood!”
“If she can’t reincarnate, then she can’t be with Lord of Dawn… Moon Goddess shouldn’t want to die again now.”
“…Don’t you guys realize how serious this is? Isn’t this obvious?”
“Ahhh? What situation are you talking about???”
Under the shocked gaze of the viewers, Cui Yu suddenly raised his hand. The silver chains, like mischievous little sprites, gently coiled around Moon Goddess’s neck.
She paused briefly, then smiled faintly. “Thank you.” Tears streamed down her face, and the silver chains tightened sharply. Moon Goddess gasped for breath, struggling: “Yu’er, don’t look at your mother.”
“…” Cui Yu obediently turned away.
The livestream viewers were in utter astonishment. From Jian Yuntai’s perspective, he could clearly see Cui Yu’s jaw clench, his brows furrow, his breathing deepen, and his eyes close tightly.
In the shadows cast by the red candles, Moon Goddess remained perfectly still, serenely accepting death with a gentle smile. She transformed into a sliver of moonlight, her final words soft and tender: “Thank you for telling me everything. When I reincarnate, I will cultivate with Lord of Dawn. We will meet again in ten thousand years.”
“…” Silence filled the hall.
A breeze passed, stars fell.
Magnificent and sorrowful, such a scene had never been seen in this lifetime.
“Cough—” Cui Yu suddenly coughed lightly, a trace of blood seeping from the corner of his mouth. He looked down. The silver chains in his hand had broken inch by inch, soaked with his own blood.
He had strangled Moon Goddess, and his heart was torn to pieces.
Only then did he collapse in the hall, white hair falling around him, moonlight lingering nearby. Throughout the process, he had appeared calm, but when Jian Yuntai sat beside him, it became clear that tears had streamed down his face.
Plop—
Jian Yuntai caught the tear. Strangely, it did not pass through his hand but crystallized into a dazzling point of light.
“Who’s there?!” Cui Yu suddenly lifted his gaze, staring directly at Jian Yuntai, though his vision could not focus.
Jian Yuntai’s heart skipped. Before he could react, several sounds of rushing wind came from outside the hall.
Celestial soldiers had arrived.
Cui Yu turned to look at them. All were stunned, staring blankly at the shattered silver chains.
“High Immortal Cui Yu, you actually strangled the Moon Goddess!”
“The news of Yan Luo killing your father hasn’t even settled, and now—you’ve killed your mother too! Are you all insane?!”
“Silence!” Another figure passed through the white-armored soldiers. It was the same Divine Lord from before!
The Divine Lord waved, enveloped in clouds and mist. The celestial soldiers were blocked from advancing.
After a pause, the Divine Lord sighed. “I warned you. The tribulation between Moon Goddess and Lord of Dawn is unfinished—it is their fate. Your rash intervention is useless and only drags you into it, causing you to suffer as well.”
“You think what I did was in vain?” Cui Yu slowly raised his gaze. His light-colored eyes shimmered slightly, then he smiled. “No wonder you ascended to godhood. So dull-witted, living a miserable life.”
“I do not understand, nor do I wish to,” the Divine Lord smiled. “Only by not understanding can one sever feelings and harden the heart. You have defied heaven and changed your fate. The new destiny—”
The Divine Lord looked at Jian Yuntai once more, his tone complex and profound: “He will make you understand.”
Cui Yu followed his gaze. Jian Yuntai met his eyes, his body shivering. But Cui Yu soon looked away, frowning. “Who are you looking at?”
“From another world,” the Divine Lord said. “A person who has severed their emotions and hardened their heart.”
The moment his words fell, Jian Yuntai’s reaction was far greater than Cui Yu’s, leaping to his feet in an instant.
The livestream exploded:
“WTF WTF WTF! People have been arguing about whether instances are real worlds, and NPCs are real people—this proves it, right? He mentioned another world!”
“What does ‘severed emotions and hardened heart’ mean? Why say that about Jian Dadan? Jian Dadan is clearly still loyal and emotional.”
“??? My goosebumps are standing!”
Amid the confused stares, the Divine Lord spoke: “High Immortal Cui Yu. Damaging the Time Artifact is a grave offense. All immortals in your lineage are to be punished in the Underworld, redeeming themselves for eternity. Do you have any complaints?”
“…” Cui Yu lowered his eyes, silent.
The Divine Lord continued, “I grant you the Soul-Reaping Brush and the Register of Life and Death. On the first page are the names of Lord of Dawn and Moon Goddess. Once you are ready, you may send them back to reincarnation and continue their bond.”
With that, the Divine Lord waved, dispersing the clouds and mist.
“High Immortal Cui Yu, though possessing the destiny of a Supreme God, you committed a grave crime and destroyed your own destiny. You are now punished to the Underworld as a judge of the Yin Law Division. All immortals of the Chenyue Ridge are also punished and sent to the Underworld.”
The proclamation echoed through the Heavenly Realm, shaking heaven and earth. The previously calm realm suddenly experienced massive upheavals. Chenyue Ridge disappeared, countless immortals were punished, and everyone stared in shock, bewildered:
“How could the punishment be so severe? Killing Moon Goddess alone shouldn’t affect the entire Chenyue Ridge!”
“This is too harsh, abnormal! Did he commit other crimes? Nothing was heard before!”
Cui Yu slowly stood, expressionless, walking past the countless astonished celestial soldiers.
He approached the Fallen Immortal Platform.
The once-envied High Immortal Cui Yu was stripped of his supreme rank, reduced to a Yin Official in the Underworld.
……
……
Bang bang—
Bang bang—
The bedboard shook violently, the entire bed seeming to split apart. Sun Bin, lying under the bed, had already begun tearfully drafting his final words.
How could this happen?!
What was Cui Yu’s past? The more agitated Sun Bin felt, the more uncontrollable the oppressive aura became. Judging by the current aura, Cui Yu’s dream might have already turned the world into withered herbs and scattered corpses, and he was probably in a frenzied state.
That’s what Sun Bin thought.
Terrified, he tried to roll out like a mud-covered frog when Jian Yuntai’s urgent voice rang from the bed: “Cui Yu! Wake up, wake up!”
“…!” Sun Bin shrank back in fright.
‘Click click’—a bone-chilling sound came from nearby. Sun Bin nearly suffocated as he slowly turned his head, glancing at the right side of the bed. Suddenly, everything went black.
Oh no! The bedboard had split in the middle!
Now, it wasn’t just the bedboard—Sun Bin split along with it. In his near-desperate gaze, the bedboard could no longer bear the weight and crashed with a thunderous boom—
The first thing to fall was a bowl. Its rim hit the ground, and the water inside splashed like a mother’s open mouth, drenching Sun Bin’s face entirely.
He froze, mouth agape, water dripping down.
All this happened in a flash. Before he could react, shimmering white hair flashed before his eyes.
Beautiful, yet Sun Bin exclaimed in disbelief.
Water pattered around, and Cui Yu’s gaze was filled with unyielding ferocity, seemingly still trapped in the memories of his dreams. When he glanced slightly to the side, Sun Bin accidentally met his eyes. His legs went weak instantly, feeling as if staring into the eyes of a demon.
Just one look, and his breath froze.
Just as Sun Bin thought he was surely doomed, a shadow fell from above. Jian Yuntai appeared at that moment, looking like an angel in Sun Bin’s eyes. His fair face seemed to glow with holy light, radiating divinity.
Save me! Save me!
Your husband found me!
Sun Bin was completely exposed under Cui Yu’s murderous gaze, and he was so terrified his heart was trembling. His eyelids twitched as he desperately tried to signal Jian Yuntai with his eyes.
Sure enough, Jian Yuntai, being quite clever, picked up on his plea for help and gave him a reassuring look that said “Don’t worry.”
Phew—
Just as Sun Bin was about to breathe a sigh of relief, he heard Jian Yuntai’s voice, full of sorrow and shock, as he said:
“My God! Sun Bin, how… how did you end up under Cui Yu’s bed?!”
