Chapter 61: Confused Criminals

An Bu obediently stayed in the hospital for a few days. She found Fangcun and asked him to inform Jian Ningxuan that she could be discharged.
Fangcun was quite resourceful, using his status as a junior intern to prevent other doctors from taking over her treatment. He personally conducted routine examinations. After adapting to An Bu’s identity, he had long lost his initial fear. Instead, he developed an unprecedented enthusiasm for researching the undead.
With An Bu’s consent, he successively took samples of her blood, hair, nails, etc., eagerly conducting experiments. An Bu was so generous because she knew that once these things left her body, they would decay within two or three hours, contaminated like they had been exposed to some element, making any examination impossible. However, Fangcun was still happily engaged in his activities. If not for some remaining sanity, he even thought about dissecting An Bu comprehensively.
“Discharge?” Fangcun immediately refused, “No, no, no. With your ‘serious’ injuries, you should stay for one or two years at least!”
An Bu quietly looked at him without saying a word.
Fangcun was paralyzed by her icy eyes, instantly changing his stance, “Alright, the deceased comes first. I’ll announce this unfortunate news to your big boss tomorrow.”
“I’m considering whether to silence you. You don’t look like someone who can keep a secret and has a good reputation.”
“Who said that!” Fangcun defended himself, “There’s no one in the world more trustworthy and reputable than me!”
An Bu gave him a disdainful look.
Ignoring her, Fangcun approached her and whispered, “Sis An, I’ve been wanting to ask you a question.”
“Ask.”
Fearlessly, Fangcun asked, “When did you die?”
An Bu glanced at him and asked, “Are you sure you want to know?”
Fangcun nodded without hesitation.
“Alright, telling won’t hurt.” An Bu replied indifferently, “I’ve been dead for over seven hundred years, poisoned and killed, then buried as a sacrifice in the tomb of a feudal king.”
Fangcun’s eyes lit up, continuing to ask, “And when did you come ‘back’ to life?”
“Over a hundred years ago, a few tomb robbers discovered that tomb, opened my coffin, and I absorbed their vitality. Suddenly, I came back to life.”
“When you say ‘absorbed their vitality,’ you mean…”
“Haven’t you heard of ghost stories? By vitality, I mean that unique vitality possessed by living people.”
Fangcun swallowed hard, cautiously asking, “What happened to those tomb robbers whose vitality you absorbed… now?”
“Do you still need to ask? Of course, they’re dead.” An Bu smirked, a wicked curve forming at the corner of her mouth.
Fangcun discreetly created some distance, suddenly realizing that he had been too careless. He didn’t regard An Bu as a dangerous old corpse, resulting in the loss of quite a bit of vitality over the past few days. No wonder he always felt mentally fatigued and physically weak. (Old Corpse An: That’s because you stayed up late studying pseudoscience!)
Seeing his pitiful appearance, An Bu scornfully remarked, “What are you afraid of? My taste is quite picky. I don’t accept all kinds of vitality. I wouldn’t even want a suicide squad like you. As for those tomb robbers, it’s been over a hundred years. Should I keep them around for you to dissect?”
An Bu spoke with a convincing tone, and Fangcun, believing every word, was relieved and took a deep breath.
“Alright, let’s not talk nonsense. Remember to arrange for my discharge.” Saying this, a knock suddenly sounded from behind. Shortly after, Jian Ningxuan entered, walking straight to An Bu.
“Lunchtime. Shall we?” Jian Ningxuan placed his hand on An Bu’s waist, glancing at Fangcun who was shorter by a whole head.
Fangcun: “…” What are you looking at? Do you think I’ll compete with you for the corpse?!
Seeing the cat master, Old Corpse An instantly transformed into a sweet demeanor, “Let’s go, I happen to be hungry.” Then, she waved friendly at Fang Cun, saying, “Little Fang, goodbye.”
Fang Cun: “…”, witnessing a live transformation of a corpse into sweetness.
Seeing the two walk out of the duty room, Fangcun suddenly thought, was An Bu with Jian Ningxuan, a living person, because the Yang energy in his body suited her taste…
“Mr. Jian, Fangcun just mentioned that my body is recovering well, and I can probably be discharged in the next couple of days,” An Bu said as they returned to the ward, nibbling on vegetables.
“Oh, really?” Jian Ningxuan nodded. “Let him perform another full-body checkup for you. If everything is fine, we can leave.”
An Bu didn’t expect him to agree so readily. She thought he would insist on her staying for a few more days.
Jian Ningxuan didn’t explain much. The reason he agreed to her discharge was that he was sure her injuries had almost healed. Secondly, he knew An Bu didn’t like staying in the hospital, and thirdly, the two criminals had already been captured.
Based on the portraits An Bu drew, he found the target individuals in the surveillance footage from the day of the kidnapping. Then, tracking their movements, he captured relatively clear frontal images, eventually identifying their identities. The police quickly arrested them based on this lead.
“After being discharged, do we want to celebrate a bit?” An Bu looked at her cat master with a smile. These days, his mood had been consistently bad, and the times he emitted light were pitifully few, making the old corpse to covet it.
“How do you want to celebrate?” Jian Ningxuan asked.
“Of course…” An Bu said with excitement, “Eat, drink, and have fun!”
Jian Ningxuan: “…Specifics?”
“I want to eat the vegetable salad you make, drink the hundred-flavor fruit juice you squeeze, have you buy me lingerie, accompany me in a romantic bath, and try out three or more challenging positions with me.”
After expressing her requests, An Bu indeed saw a beautiful glow shimmering on the cat master.
Unable to resist, she leaned over and pecked his lips.
Jian Ningxuan embraced her waist, deepening the kiss. In his deep blue eyes, a hint of suppressed desire flickered.
“Stay one more night. I’ll pick you up from the hospital tomorrow.” Although he was eager, Jian Ningxuan insisted on waiting for the final examination results.
“Sure.” An Bu raised her eyebrows, indicating that she would follow instructions and not cause trouble.
Meanwhile, at the police station, Officer Sun was interrogating the two criminals who kidnapped An Bu and Fei Xinjue.
They vehemently denied being ordered by anyone and claimed that kidnapping Fei Xinjue was merely for money.
“If it’s just for money, why did you kill?” Officer Sun stared sharply at them.
The bald man said, “Who said we killed anyone?”
“No killing?” Officer Sun sneered, “Then what did we dig up from underground?”
The bald man’s heart skipped a beat, then he pretended to be clueless, “How would I know what you dug up?”
Smack! Officer Sun slammed the table heavily. “Still trying to play dumb? Both victims have accused you of your crimes.”
Two victims? Wasn’t one of them dead?
After the failed operation, the bald and square-faced men hid in a remote location, cut off contact with the outside world, and didn’t pay attention to the news online. Information about An Bu was blocked by the police and Jian Ningxuan the next day, only circulating on some unofficial forums and video websites. Hence, they hadn’t seen the video of An Bu being successfully rescued after being buried alive for 100 minutes. This was done to protect An Bu and prevent her from being targeted by criminals again.
Insisting on their innocence, the bald man said, “We only kidnapped, and our operation even failed in the end.” He and his accomplice had already discussed that if captured by the police, they would admit to the kidnapping but firmly deny murder and burying the body. Fei Xinjue didn’t witness them killing anyone, and even if the woman’s body was dug up, it couldn’t immediately prove they killed her. Of course, this couldn’t be hidden for long, and they just wanted to buy some time for themselves.
“Just kidnapping?” Officer Sun laughed mockingly, “Fei Xinjue and the girl you buried in the coffin didn’t say the same.”
The bald man smirked. What could be said now that the person is dead?
Seeing his confident expression, Officer Sun probably guessed what he was thinking. After Fei Xinjue was rescued, they must have known that An Bu would be dug out. However, they didn’t know she was still alive.
“Let me show you something.” Officer Sun took out his phone, opened a video, and handed it to the bald man.
Looking down, the bald man immediately understood what was filmed in the video. A group of people dug up a coffin from the ground, and the girl inside was the one he had killed with his own hands. Seeing this, the bald man’s expression remained unchanged until a man jumped into the pit, pushed open the coffin lid, and the next second, a bloodied hand slowly stretched out from the crack of the coffin…
The bald man stood up abruptly, staring at the bloody hand in shock and disbelief.
“This is impossible!” He shouted.
“Oh? What’s impossible?” Officer Sun asked casually.
“She can’t possibly be alive!”
“Hehe, although it’s amazing, being rescued after being buried alive for 100 minutes isn’t impossible.”
“Absolutely impossible!” The bald man exclaimed, “I shot her twice, and when she fell into the pit, her spine was even broken. How could she still be alive?”
Officer Sun stared at him sternly, “What did you say?”
“I said…” The bald man suddenly realized he had let something slip and immediately turned pale.
“You said you shot her twice, and her spine was broken before burying her?” Officer Sun repeated.
“No, no, it’s not like that.” The bald man stared at the video, where the girl was carried out of the coffin by the man, and then a few others left the scene together. The video ended here, but the shock it brought him was extremely impactful.
A similar situation occurred in another interrogation room. Square-faced man, watching An Bu being dug out alive, couldn’t believe his eyes.
Did they kill a fake person? Were those two bullets they shot just part of a dream? Did they actually bury a person who looked like a corpse, possibly someone who seemed shot but was actually alive?
Two confused criminals, completely unaware of what they were facing…
