Ninth Imperial Glorious Phoenix Chapter 221

Chapter 221: Unworthy Wife

<Previous Chapter<Table of Contents>Next Chapter>

You really won’t share the good things with me! What happened to being one with your spouse? And what about sharing in both prosperity and adversity? You knew something I didn’t, but you didn’t tell me! Seeing Fu Mingzheng showing off like that made me itchy. I thought I would at least see a slightly guilty face, but Mingzhu just stared at the canopy, lost in thought. So, he became unhappy. After all the effort he put into serving her, she treated him like this? He had said so much, but she still looked so blank?

Normally, shouldn’t she comfort him a little, assuring him that nothing would happen, and then offer him a specially crafted sleeve arrow for his defense? Then analyze Zhongshan Wang with him? That’s what being a couple, sharing joys and sorrows, and sharing fortunes and difficulties meant!

Given Mingzhu’s slightly different way of thinking, Yuwen Chu patiently waited, expecting her to suddenly realize and then flatter him with care and concern. But after waiting for a while, Mingzhu still looked blank, and he couldn’t help but use his strength to shake her waist and threaten her through gritted teeth, “What are you thinking? Did Wangfei not hear what I just said?”

Mingzhu was shaken back to her senses. Seeing him gritting his teeth, she felt a sudden panic, hastily trying to remedy the situation, “I did, I did. Your Highness, don’t worry. Although Royal Mother and Funing don’t like me very much, I will still take care of them…” Before she could finish speaking, she covered her mouth in horror, afraid of what she had just said, and looked at Yuwen Chu with fear. What was she saying? This slip of the tongue made it seem like she didn’t care about his life or death at all, and it was so smooth, as if she didn’t care if he lived or died. It was almost like she wanted him to…

Yuwen Chu had already turned his face away, looking at her with a stern expression, not saying a word, emanating an icy aura.

Mingzhu hurriedly rushed over and hugged his arm, trying to please him, “I was just lost in thought and didn’t quite catch what Your Highness said. Could you please repeat it for me? I’ll listen carefully and remember every word.”

Yuwen Chu pushed her away and turned his back to her. “Don’t touch me, I’m tired.”

That phrase, usually something she said to him, sounded unpleasant coming from him. Mingzhu crawled over on her knees, knelt beside him, and cheekily peeked at him, seeing him with closed eyes and tightly pursed lips, clearly angry. She boldly hugged his arm and rubbed it vigorously, dragging out her words in a coquettish manner, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, Your Highness, please don’t lower yourself to my level. Just tell me what you said earlier.”

Yuwen Chu heartlessly pried her hand off and shifted away, saying, “Stop bothering me!”

What was this? When she was younger and made mistakes, her parents and brothers would sometimes push her away, telling her not to bother them. But she always managed to get forgiven with her straightforward persistence. Mingzhu didn’t think admitting fault was embarrassing at all. She simply continued to pester Yuwen Chu, flipping to the other side and using her hair to tickle his nostrils.

Yuwen Chu couldn’t stand it anymore. He opened his eyes and growled menacingly, “Are you annoying on purpose?”

“I’m not annoying, it’s Your Highness who’s annoyed,” Mingzhu smiled playfully at him, lying on the pillow and laughing at him. Her attitude was impeccable.

Yuwen Chu originally wanted to stay angry for a while, but seeing her indifferent demeanor, he couldn’t muster any anger. However, he wasn’t willing to let her off easily either. With a stern face, he said, “You made a big mistake, do you know that?”

“I know,” Mingzhu replied sheepishly, “Your Highness, give me a chance to make amends?”

Yuwen Chu arrogantly glanced at her, intending to repeat what he had said before, but then he felt it was pointless. It all felt like nagging, and it was just a sleeve arrow, wasn’t it? It was just her wild guess, and she happened to guess Zhongshan Wang, right? If she didn’t want to tell him, then so be it! If she didn’t want to give it to him, then so be it! He didn’t care! He had his own way of making it! So, he simply turned over decisively, turning his back to Mingzhu once again.

Quite stubborn indeed, Mingzhu touched her nose and said, “Did I hear something about a sleeve arrow from Your Highness?”

This made Yuwen Chu even angrier. So, she didn’t not hear it, she pretended not to hear it? Pretending not to hear it was even more infuriating than not hearing it! It was obvious she was teasing him! She must think he is so petty! For a moment, he felt embarrassed by all the tricks he had played just now, it was really regrettable.

But Mingzhu was really innocent. She was racking her brains to figure out who ambushed Fu Mingzheng, and she only heard about a sleeve arrow and the last sentence. Seeing that Yuwen Chu was so difficult to coax, she didn’t bother anymore. Feeling tired and burdened by her thoughts, she simply turned over and slept with her back to Yuwen Chu.

They say “third time’s the charm.” If Mingzhu were to come and coax him again, he would forgive her. Yuwen Chu waited for a while, but Mingzhu didn’t come to coax him as expected. He listened intently, and heard the rhythmic and long breaths behind him. Turning over, he saw that she had already fallen asleep soundly. So much for that anger, he sighed and shook his head with a bitter smile. It’s like throwing pearls before swine, that’s what he was doing. Well, marrying an unworthy wife, he deserved this.

The next day, when Mingzhu woke up, Yuwen Chu was already gone. It took her a moment to remember that he had been angry with her last night. She couldn’t help but ask Su Lan and the others, “How was His Highness’s mood this morning? Is he upset?”

Su Lan didn’t understand what she meant and honestly replied, “I can’t tell. His Highness is as calm and polite as usual.”

As long as they didn’t cause trouble, Yuwen Chu treated his servants kindly and politely, rarely speaking ill of them. So Su Lan’s “calm and polite” was a fitting description. Unfortunately, he wasn’t as polite to her. How long would this anger last? Mingzhu happily finished her breakfast under the resentful gaze of the serving maids, then asked for her clothes to be brought for preparation. She was getting ready for the engagement ceremony between Yuwen You and the Wusun Princess, a significant occasion after her wedding.

Apart from accompanying Yuwen Chu to the palace the day after the wedding, this was Mingzhu’s first public appearance at such a major event after marriage. She had to prepare carefully, not needing to deliberately dress modestly. She could be as beautiful as she wanted.

After picking out her dress, she moved on to choosing jewelry. When she saw the gemstone peony flower that had been set aside, she immediately thought of the incident with Jiang Shanshan praising the flower so much, which led to a conflict between her and Funing. She also thought of Jiang Shanshan’s proficiency in Wusun and her mischievous nature. She was sure Jiang Shanshan would show up at the ceremony, so she decided to wear that gemstone peony flower.

She wanted to completely overshadow Jiang Shanshan!
