Chapter 637: Accident

<Previous Chapter<Table of Contents>Next Chapter>

Yuwen Cong listened to the conversation between Empress Dowager Min and her son with amusement, whispering softly in Mingzhu’s ear, “This mother and son are also fools. I really don’t know how such fools became emperors.” If he were to be the emperor, how could Yuwen Chu make trouble?

Does not speaking mean death? Mingzhu was worried by Fu Cong and others. Fortunately, Yuwen Cong didn’t say much, just quietly listening to Empress Dowager Min and her son.

Some palace attendants fed Yuwen Bai medicine, but he got angry because of toothache and repeatedly demanded to have the attendants killed. Empress Dowager Min kept comforting him until he finally calmed down, and the two of them discussed matters again.

Yuwen Bai asked Empress Dowager Min, “Is Yuwen Cong reliable?”

Empress Dowager Min replied, “Whether he is reliable or not is not important. I don’t intend to trust him for a lifetime. As long as he helps us get through this difficulty first, then it’s easy to deal with him later. When things are settled, the Emperor can invite him over and kill him.”

Yuwen Cong sneered disdainfully.

Then footsteps were heard, and someone rushed in joyfully, saying, “Your Majesty, Your Majesty, Fu Cong has been surrounded!”

Mingzhu couldn’t catch her breath, and tears fell out instantly.

“Good!” Empress Dowager Min slammed the table and said loudly, “If the executioners can’t succeed, then shoot him to death with arrows! In any case, we must not let this old man escape from the palace. This is a rare opportunity!”

Yuwen Bai also said, “Kill that old thief, cut off his head, and send his body in pieces to that old hag. Also, let Yuwen Long send someone to surround the Fu Mansion. No matter what means they use, don’t leave anyone with the surname Fu! Kill them all! Kill them all!” The last two sentences were almost screamed hysterically.

Yuwen Cong sighed, “I can’t stand it anymore. Such a beastly thing can actually become an emperor! No wonder my father couldn’t bear it, even I can’t bear it.” He asked Mingzhu softly, “If you’re willing to go with me, I’ll help you kill this disaster, what do you think?”

“Mm.” Mingzhu nodded without hesitation. Anyway, there’s no need to talk about trust with such a person. Even if she agrees, she can always change her mind. Any alliance formed under unequal conditions can be disregarded.

Yuwen Cong continued, “Let me think. How can we kill this disaster without dragging us down? I’ve got it! We need to find a scapegoat or find someone else to do the killing. So, we still need to wait.”

Mingzhu kicked him, her father’s life was uncertain, and this jerk wasn’t in a hurry to kill Yuwen Bai, but instead was here causing trouble?

Yuwen Cong didn’t care at all, silently pondering.

After a long while, Mingzhu’s stomach growled audibly. A palace attendant rushed in, exclaiming, “Fu Cong has escaped!”

“Where did he go?” the Empress Dowager shouted.

“Changxin Palace,” the attendant replied. Before he finished speaking, the sound of shattering porcelain echoed from outside. Yuwen Bai, teeth clenched in anger, said fiercely, “Gather all the men and besiege Changxin Palace. Burn those two old fools inside.”

Another person reported, “The Emperor’s uncle has been injured.”

The Empress Dowager quickly responded, “I’ll go check on him.” She then cautioned the attendants, “Take good care of His Majesty. He Zhengtu, if anything happens to him, you’ll answer to me.”

He Zhengtu acknowledged with a nod.

Mingzhu began to think. He Zhengtu was one of Yuwen Chu’s men. If she could avoid Yuwen Bai and let He Zhengtu know she was here, she could escape successfully.

After a long time, with no sound outside, Yuwen Cong called Black Seventeen aside and whispered a few words to him. Then, he felt around the wall for a moment, and there was a muffled sound, something fell from above Mingzhu’s head. Mingzhu was caught off guard and fell forward, feeling sore from the impact.

“I’ll kill you b*stards! How did you do this? Hurry up and get me out of here!” Yuwen Bai’s angry voice suddenly came from the bed, Mingzhu was stunned for a moment, and then realized that the exit of the secret passage was right above Yuwen Bai’s bed. Yuwen Cong operated the mechanism, and Yuwen Bai fell down. Mingzhu looked up at the ceiling, unable to see any light, obviously it had returned to its original state.

Yuwen Cong had only explored the secret passage to this point before and didn’t dare to go out, so he didn’t expect such a thing to happen. Caught off guard, he quickly accepted reality: “I bow to Your Majesty.”

Yuwen Bai also realized something was wrong, and after a long silence, he asked, “Who are you?”

Yuwen Cong smiled, “Isn’t Your Majesty very clever? Guess who I am?”

Yuwen Bai tentatively said, “Yuwen Cong, you’re the Yuwen Cong who was brought into the palace by Linan Wang a few days ago!”

“Exactly! Your Majesty is truly clever and mighty.” Yuwen Cong lit a match and found a half candle in the corner, lighting it up. Seeing Mingzhu still lying on the ground, he helped her up and then brought her over to Yuwen Bai: “Is Your Majesty looking for her?”

Yuwen Bai was seriously injured and could barely move on the bed. After seeing Mingzhu’s appearance clearly, he chuckled softly, “So, the Wangfei is in this situation today. It must be unpleasant to be tied up and gagged, isn’t it?”

Mingzhu remained expressionless.

Yuwen Cong pushed Mingzhu back towards Black Seventeen, then turned and approached Yuwen Bai: “Since Your Majesty and I are here together, let’s make a deal.”

“What do you want?” asked Yuwen Bai.

“You’re really smart and straightforward, Your Majesty,” Yuwen Cong said leisurely. “I can either take Your Majesty’s life, or spare it. It depends on how much you offer me.”

“Are you treating me like a child? Let me tell you, there are always people watching me. They’ll come as soon as I fall down. Do you think you can escape?” Yuwen Bai glanced at Mingzhu and said coldly, “If you want to live, leave Fu Mingzhu here.”

“That’s not possible. It took me a lot of effort to catch her. I can’t just give her to you so easily, Your Majesty,” Yuwen Cong retorted.

“There’s no room for negotiation. She stays, and you leave. Otherwise, you both stay,” Yuwen Bai said firmly.

Yuwen Cong replied coldly, “Your Majesty isn’t afraid of risking your own life?”

“Why should I be afraid? I can just die with you all. Do you think I’m really alone as the emperor? As long as you take one step, I can make sure you have no place to bury yourselves. Now it’s you requesting me, not the other way around. Get that straight,” Yuwen Bai grinned maliciously.

Yuwen Cong pondered for a moment and then said, “Then, how can I know if Your Majesty will keep your word?”
