Mingzhu responded coldly, “Of course, I often fight with ducks. And right now, I’m in the middle of a fight.” Anyone who argued or fought with her was a duck. A duck*!
* slang for male prostitute
Yuwen Chu understood her implication but since he had already laughed, there was no need to keep a stern face. After all, he was a man, and being petty wouldn’t look good. If he continued to argue with Mingzhu, it would surely escalate.
Smartly, he didn’t continue the argument. Instead, he leisurely boiled a pot of hot water, poured it into a copper basin, and slowly took off his socks, preparing to soak his feet.
Mingzhu’s eyes widened in surprise. He was actually going to enjoy himself! She wasn’t going to let that happen. She quickly dashed over, grabbed the basin, and plunged her feet into the hot water. The moment her feet touched the water, she sighed in relief, her face relaxing. She then looked at Yuwen Chu provocatively, daring him to do something about it.
Yuwen Chu smiled slightly, ignoring her, and picked up a cup of hot tea, gazing out the window. The scene outside was no longer as serene as before, with many messy footprints ruining the pristine, cold beauty. Yet, he kept looking as if there was a flower out there.
Without a response from Yuwen Chu, Mingzhu couldn’t continue the argument. As the warmth from the hot water spread, she relaxed, her anger dissipating. She slumped down, fiddling with her fingers, unsure of what to do next.
Yuwen Chu didn’t press her further. Instead, he quietly poured a cup of hot tea and placed it in front of her. Mingzhu pouted, “I don’t want it.”
He ignored her, adding more hot water to the basin, making it warm again. Mingzhu felt conflicted. If she wanted to keep up her act, she should take her feet out of the water. But she didn’t want to give him the satisfaction.
Pouting, she hesitated for a moment before reluctantly saying, “Put your feet in too. I don’t want to take advantage of you.”
Yuwen Chu immediately put his foot in, the copper basin being rather small to begin with. He casually stepped on Mingzhu’s foot. His feet were much larger than hers, and as soon as he stepped down, his toes brushed against Mingzhu’s shin. Mingzhu stared at him, but he calmly met her gaze, showing no sign of remorse or backing down.
Mingzhu pulled her foot back and forcefully stepped on his foot. He looked at her silently, then retracted his foot only to step on hers again, even wiggling his toes as if to challenge her to step back.
Infuriated, Mingzhu tried to pull her foot away again, but this time Yuwen Chu wouldn’t let her. He pressed down on her foot firmly, making it impossible for her to move. Frustrated, she bent down to grab his leg, trying to shove it away. But his legs felt like they had rooted themselves to her feet; she couldn’t budge them.
Mingzhu, on the verge of tears, pulled with all her might, “You only know how to bully me!” She felt a pair of hands gently resting on her shoulders, then wrapping around her in a tender embrace. The steam rising around them made her already tear-filled eyes glisten even more. Before she could think further, two large tears splashed onto Yuwen Chu’s foot.
He sighed and held her tighter, “I won’t push you anymore. Tell me when you’re ready.”
Mingzhu wiped her tears fiercely and looked up at him, stubbornly asking, “Are you scared? Do you think I’m strange, scary, weird?”
“A little strange and weird…” Yuwen Chu lowered his gaze to Mingzhu, speaking slowly. Then he saw tears suddenly welling up in her eyes. Before she angrily shook off his hand, he quickly added, “Not exactly terrifying, nor frightening, just… surprising.”
The tears in Mingzhu’s eyes lessened a bit. She retorted indignantly, “You’re lying. I’ve seen through you.”
Yuwen Chu smiled, “If you’ve seen through me, then why run away? If you know I’m insincere, shouldn’t you find another solution rather than causing a scene?”
Mingzhu was taken aback, glaring at him, “Who’s causing a scene? And who’s the one drinking vinegar over nothing?”
“This is a serious matter. Please treat it seriously,” Yuwen Chu said, clearing his throat and adopting a commanding tone. “Fu Mingzhu, you have three questions to answer. First, whether your story is real or a dream, tell it fully. Second, focus on what Shen Ruilin did and why you chose him. Third, why did you tell the truth even though you were scared?”
Mingzhu stared silently into Yuwen Chu’s eyes, still as deep and captivating as ever, still so reserved and composed, devoid of scorn or suspicion, but rather filled with curiosity. Never before had she understood so clearly what she wanted – to stand by his side, weathering storms together, and sharing the journey of the future.
With emotions in her heart, even the simplest person can become a poet. Mingzhu began answering from the third question: “Because I love Your Highness, I respect Your Highness, and I don’t want to deceive Your Highness. So, even though I know I might be despised and suspected, I still want to tell you the truth. I want to take a chance. Perhaps, heaven chose me to return to this life, to return to a time before the nightmare began, just to let me meet Your Highness and experience this pure love and happiness.”
She was asking both the heavens and Yuwen Chu about their future together, about how they would live their lives and interact with each other, all with a single thought from him. It was the most delicate and beautiful thing she had ever said in her life, but also the last time she would say it. If he didn’t accept, there would be no chance to hear it again.
Yuwen Chu was indeed deeply moved. He remained silent for a long time before earnestly saying, “I believe so, it was meant for you to meet me. You said in your dream, I didn’t marry you, but spent my life with Jiang Shanshan. Perhaps, it was my unwillingness and prayers that moved the heavens.”
Mingzhu’s eyes blurred with tears. “Actually, I would prefer to have never experienced any of this and to have met you from the very beginning, and fallen in love with you.”
Yuwen Chu enjoyed hearing this confession, feeling proud of his charm. He patiently reassured Mingzhu, “It’s okay. Despite the twists and turns, you still ended up meeting me in the end.”
