Yuwen Chu’s hand paused, and he asked, “Why do you ask?”
Mingzhu smiled, “Back then, you arranged for Linan Wang to get me out of Yuwen Cong’s grasp. She was with me the whole time. I was heavily pregnant and used to being pampered, so I wanted her to help me bathe and dry my hair. She always found excuses to avoid it. I thought maybe she was a daughter of a wealthy family and wasn’t used to or willing to do such things.”
Seeing Yuwen Chu’s expression change, she quickly explained, “I’m not complaining, just curious.”
Yuwen Chu’s face softened into a smile, “Did you force her to help?”
Mingzhu shook her head, “Do you think I’m that unreasonable? She was doing important work for you and wasn’t as close to me as Donghui and the others. If she wasn’t willing, I wouldn’t force her or get upset.” Then, with a gossipy look, she added, “She said she didn’t like women and didn’t want me to touch her.”
Yuwen Chu chuckled, “So did you touch her?”
“I did, and that’s how I found out she didn’t like it. I wanted to know about you and Zhuang Zhuang, so I invited her to sleep and chat with me…” Before she could finish, Yuwen Chu’s hand suddenly tugged hard, making her scalp hurt. She quickly said, “Gently, you’re hurting me.”
Yuwen Chu slowed down, leaned close to her ear, and whispered, “That’s nothing. Later, when you beg me, make sure to call sweetly.”
Mingzhu’s face flushed, and she scolded, “Can you be serious?”
Yuwen Chu replied solemnly, “What did I do wrong? Tell me.”
Mingzhu rolled her eyes and took the towel from his hand to dry her hair. “This isn’t home. Please behave properly, Your Highness.”
Yuwen Chu smiled, lowered his eyes, and poured tea for them both. Casually, he asked, “So what happened next? How did Du Heng respond?”
“Of course, she refused. She slept on the floor outside and wouldn’t move to the inner room no matter what. I thought she had a peculiar temperament.” Mingzhu felt her hair was mostly dry and moved to the dressing table to apply face cream.
Yuwen Chu walked over, placed his hands on her shoulders, and whispered, “Du Heng is a man.”
Mingzhu’s comb fell onto the table. She wanted to say he was joking but couldn’t find the words. Awkwardly, she said, “I suspected, but she had no Adam’s apple! I checked.”
Yuwen Chu gritted his teeth, “Do you think he was able to fool everyone for no reason? Fu Mingzhu, you idiot!”
Mingzhu innocently spread her hands, “It’s not my fault. You’re too capable at disguises!” Then she looked at Yuwen Chu, “Was it you who told him to do this?”
Yuwen Chu’s expression turned a bit unnatural, but he admitted, “How else could he protect you closely without arousing suspicion?”
Mingzhu asked, “He never revealed his true identity because you instructed him?”
Yuwen Chu’s expression darkened again, “At first, it was to prevent you from exposing the truth accidentally. Later, if he suddenly appeared as a man, rumors would arise, which wouldn’t be good for you.”
Mingzhu turned around, looking earnestly at him, “So?”
Yuwen Chu snorted, “He safely escorted you to the capital and has returned to the north. Once things are stable there, he will return with his true identity, and no one will remember this.”
Mingzhu grabbed his lapels, looking into his eyes, “So, you deceived so many people, and you blame me for being stupid?”
Her questions aimed to highlight his unjustified anger and jealousy. Yuwen Chu’s face turned red. He grabbed her waist, tossed her onto his shoulder, and growled, “Are you rebelling? You’ve grown bold, daring to challenge me!”
Mingzhu laughed heartily, twisting her body to wrap her arms around his neck. She gently exhaled near his ear. “A little rivalry between husband and wife can be quite fun sometimes,” she whispered. Noticing Yuwen Chu’s ears turning red, she mischievously licked his ear. “Absence makes the heart grow fonder. We’ve been apart for so long. Didn’t you miss me, Your Highness?”
Yuwen Chu glanced at her sideways. He originally intended to maintain his composure, but then he noticed a slight gap in her fur coat, revealing a glimpse of her crimson undergarment and slender, snow-white waist. Her skin was as white as snow, the crimson undergarment embroidered with gold, and her black hair as dark as ink. The faint, sweet fragrance surrounding her was exactly like the scenes he had dreamt of countless times.
She wasn’t wearing anything underneath! She had just slipped on the fur coat! Yuwen Chu’s head buzzed, and he suddenly pulled Mingzhu into his arms, letting out a low, sinister laugh. “You’ve become quite clever! Coming up with this trick.”
Their eyes met, their lips touched, and they both felt a tremor deep within their souls. It was the joy and thrill of reuniting with one’s long-separated other half, a feeling that words could never adequately describe.
“Ah Lang… I missed you…” Mingzhu couldn’t help but softly call out, tightly grasping Yuwen Chu’s strong shoulders. Yuwen Chu didn’t answer her. Instead, he extinguished the candle with a wave of his hand, returning her affection with tenfold passion in the darkness.
After a long while, Mingzhu, utterly exhausted, fell into a deep sleep. Yuwen Chu contentedly stroked her smooth skin and closed his eyes, enjoying his first dreamless, restful sleep since she left the capital.
Near the fourth watch, Mingzhu woke up. The man beside her was still sound asleep. Smiling, she happily snuggled into his arms, hugging his firm waist and resting her head on his arm, feeling incredibly comfortable. It’s so good to be home.
Yuwen Chu woke up and embraced her, his voice husky, “Have you slept enough? Feeling refreshed? Not tired anymore?”
Mingzhu chuckled softly, “I slept very well. Your Highness is like a soothing incense.” She sniffed him lightly like a little dog, “As soon as I left the capital, I missed your agarwood scent. It was like an addiction. Finally, I can smell it again.”
Yuwen Chu flipped over, pressing her down, and whispered, “It’s still early. Since you’re well-rested, why don’t we do something meaningful?”
Mingzhu didn’t have time to object. She was already in his embrace. Well, she didn’t really want to object anyway.
At the fifth watch, a neatly dressed Yuwen Chu walked out of the palace with a solemn expression. A group of officials waiting outside had hoped to see some signs of joy and satisfaction on the regent’s face after reuniting with his wife, but they saw nothing. They could only obediently escort him back to the capital, preparing to return in a few hours to officially welcome the regent’s consort.
