Chapter 751: Ji Hui’s Background

Once in the carriage, Yuwen Chu seriously explained about Ji Hui. “You don’t need to worry about this matter. Just ignore her. The Ji family might have sent their noble granddaughter to the capital, but they might also be hedging their bets, trying to gain favor whichever side wins. If we prevail, they’ll support the court. If we lose, they’ve only sacrificed a granddaughter. You must understand…”
Mingzhu quickly clarified that she had been reading more than before. “I know. When the Ji family was still royalty, they were known for trading daughters for benefits. Few of their Wangfeis and noblewomen had good endings; they were all pawns of their parents and brothers. So even now, abandoning Ji Hui is just family tradition—it’s something they’re very skilled at.”
Yuwen Chu smiled and tapped her lightly. “True, but Ji Hui is different. She is the beloved daughter of the Ji family’s eldest son and future patriarch, a victim of the family’s internal power struggles. Her parents wouldn’t just abandon her in the capital to die. They have significant plans for her. I have investigated her myself and found she is not a bad person. She is intelligent and kind. You don’t need to make things difficult for her.”
Mingzhu, displeased, turned her back on him. “You just said that using a beauty to gain favor wouldn’t work, and now you’re telling me this beauty is actually a kind and gentle girl and that I shouldn’t trouble her….”
Yuwen Chu chuckled and whispered something in her ear. Mingzhu was shocked. “Is Ji Hui’s birth mother really a Wusun Princess?” After getting Yuwen Chu’s confirmation, she clapped her hands in realization. “No wonder! No wonder such a good girl was chosen to be a pawn.”
But then she wondered, “But she doesn’t have any Wusun characteristics… Do you know why, Your Highness? Wusun people are supposed to be tall, fair, with high noses and deep-set eyes, like glass beads. Ji Hui is petite with black hair and black eyes. It’s hard to tell.” She recalled the daughter of Fu Wang and the Wusun Princess, who was noticeably different from pure Han children, exceptionally beautiful but also resembling a Wusun.
Yuwen Chu frowned. “I’m not close to her, so how would I know? If you’re curious, you can ask her yourself.”
Mingzhu shook her head. “I wouldn’t be so rude.” The burden on her heart lifted, a smile naturally appeared on her face, and she leaned into Yuwen Chu’s embrace.
Yuwen Chu sighed with relief and focused on playing with the children with her. Their laughter echoed outside the carriage, bringing smiles to the faces of the guards and everyone around. This was how life should be.
The Fu family residence was much livelier than when Mingzhu had left. Madame Cui’s health had improved significantly; she could get out of bed and walk, though she needed support and was still unsteady. Seeing Mingzhu and the children, she was overjoyed, calling them over and chiding, “You know your father and I miss you, but you didn’t come earlier.”
Mingzhu was about to blame Yuwen Chu when he already bowed and apologized, “It’s all my fault, Mother-in-law. I had to leave early for official business, and Mingzhu and the children waited for me, causing the delay.”
Madame Cui’s reprimand was out of deep longing for her daughter and wasn’t truly blaming Yuwen Chu. She quickly said, “It’s good you’re all back together. Seeing you and Mingzhu happy makes my illness better.”
Fu Mingzheng, holding little Jiajia, smiled, “Yes, from my experience, after a fight and reconciliation, things are always more intimate. All the awkwardness from being apart disappears.”
Madame Cui was confused, “Who had a fight?”
How did Fourth Brother know they had quarreled? But it was true; the matter with Ji Hui was something only she, being far away, didn’t know about. Everyone else did. Fourth Brother understood her well and could guess she would have made a fuss. Mingzhu smiled and told Madame Cui, “No one fought; Fourth Brother is just joking.”
“Fourth Brother-in-law has been a bit off since having a daughter, always joking. Mother-in-law, you know his words can’t be taken seriously.” Yuwen Chu glanced warningly at Fu Mingzheng, who pretended not to notice and cheerfully handed Jiajia to him. “Your Highness, do you remember how to hold a baby? I heard Millet doesn’t like you holding her. Practice with Jiajia.”
Yuwen Chu frowned but took Jiajia. Unlike Millet, Jiajia liked him and held his hand, babbling, making Yuwen Chu laugh. Millet, watching curiously, stared at Jiajia. Yuwen Chu extended his other arm to her. “Come here, Daddy will hold you too.”
Millet hesitated but then reached out. Once in Yuwen Chu’s arms, she quietly watched Jiajia, then suddenly got excited and started babbling as well. The two children’s growing excitement made everyone laugh, while on the other side, Little Stone and Zhuangzhuang started fighting over a toy.
A maid came in to announce, “The Xiangye has returned.”
Mingzhu immediately wanted to go out, but Fu Mingda held her hand, softly reminding her, “Be careful not to bump into Father.”
Mingzhu frowned. “What’s going on?”
Fu Mingda, beaming, led her out, loudly saying, “Let’s go greet Father.” Once outside, he whispered, “Father’s been experiencing severe pain in his muscles and bones these past few days. Even brushing his hair is excruciating. He doesn’t want anyone to know, but you should be aware.”
A sudden wave of sorrow hit Mingzhu. She realized that the condition Jiang Zhouzi had warned about had appeared. Had Father been holding back his symptoms because he was worried about her, only to let them show now that he knew she was safe in the capital?
A soft sedan chair was carried in. Fu Mingda quickly went to receive it, softly reminding Mingzhu, “Father is here. Smile.”
Mingzhu took a deep breath and ran forward, lifting the sedan curtain before Fu Mingda could. Smiling, she said, “Daddy, you’re finally here. I’ve been waiting for you for so long.”
Fu Cong smiled at her from the sedan, hesitating to get up. Mingzhu knew how much pain he must have endured on the journey. Heartbroken, she forced a smile. “Daddy, are you so happy to see your daughter that you’re stunned?”
“Yes, Daddy is stunned with happiness.” Fu Cong extended his hand to Mingzhu, taking a deep breath to prepare to stand. Fu Mingda quickly helped him up, and the siblings carefully supported him inside. Fu Cong moved very slowly, speaking just as slowly. “I’m glad you’re back safely. My little girl has grown up.”
Upon entering the room, Fu Cong wanted to bow to Yuwen Chu, but Yuwen Chu quickly set the children down and brought a chair over for him. “Father-in-law, please sit.”
