“We need to leave quickly,” the man said. “More things are closing in.” He sensed something was amiss and his expression turned serious. “Something is not right.”

“Then get in the vehicle quickly,” Yu Zhuqi urged.

The armored vehicle behind them had no idea what was happening and honked its horn impatiently.

Once the man got in the vehicle, he urgently said, “Hurry and get out of here!” He reiterated, “Immediately leave this street—”

“What’s wrong?” Yu Zhuqi was also startled by the man’s reaction. He asked, “Is something happening?”

“When I went down, I noticed the ground had cracked,” the man said. “And the cracks are expanding.”

Yu Zhuqi remained silent. Clearly, the situation was dire.

Without further questioning, he stepped on the accelerator, pushing the vehicle to its maximum speed. At the same time, he used the communication device to notify the vehicle behind to keep up.

Soon, Lin Zhaohe in the vehicle also felt the tremors. It seemed that something was about to emerge from beneath the ground. He opened his eyes and looked at the holographic screen inside the vehicle in disbelief. “What is this—”

“Damn it!” Yu Zhuqi shouted in a high-pitched voice. “How did this thing get here too?”

They saw a massive black worm-like creature bursting out from the road they had just passed. It resembled a mutated earthworm, covered in green slime and emitting a strong foul odor. Its head was adorned with a huge mouth filled with rows of teeth and countless zombie corpses. The corpses hung from its teeth, wriggling and struggling. A single glance was enough to make one feel physically nauseous. It was evidently attracted by the sounds of the previous battle. Fortunately, they ran fast, otherwise…

“Why the hell is it always these things?” Yu Zhuqi’s face was drenched in cold sweat. If they had walked a little slower just now, they would have been swallowed by this thing. Death might not be guaranteed, but the thought of it was truly repulsive.

“Isn’t this from Part 3?” Lin Zhaohe recalled. “The rate of evolution is too exaggerated, isn’t it?” No wonder the maps to the laboratory had changed so drastically, filled with these creatures. How could the changes be insignificant? It had only been three days, yet this place had rapidly undergone mutation. Was this the side effect brought about by the overwhelming popularity of “Code G”?

“Get out of the vehicle,” Zhuang Lao suddenly spoke up.

“What?” Lin Zhaohe was taken aback.

“The armored vehicle attracts too much attention. It was my oversight,” Zhuang Lao said. “Although it’s relatively safe to hide inside the vehicle, it also attracts some big fellows, which isn’t ideal.”

“I agree,” the man with his face covered also expressed his approval.

That made sense. After some discussion, they concluded that Zhuang Lao’s suggestion was more reasonable. The only issue was that if they were to proceed on foot, it would take longer than anticipated to reach their destination.

So they stopped the vehicle, intending to disembark and inform the team behind them. However, it seemed that the team behind had a different perspective. They argued that since they would all be facing danger, it would be safer to have the armored vehicle nearby…

Zhuang Lao clearly wasn’t the gentle big brother type. After hearing everyone’s decision, he didn’t try to persuade them and simply hung up the phone and said, “Forget about them. Let’s go.”

Lin Zhaohe agreed.

The massive armored vehicle rumbled past them, heading towards the distance. Its tremendous noise reverberated through the silent, lifeless city, like a ghost.

Carrying their luggage, the group followed the map and started moving towards the laboratory.

This was C City, one week after the outbreak. According to the storyline, there were still survivors present, but as they walked along the street, they didn’t encounter a single survivor. Only ordinary zombies wandered about. They proceeded cautiously, clearing the path as they moved forward, without encountering significant trouble.

“Where are they?” Lin Zhaohe casually asked.

“Here,” Yu Zhuzhi pulled out the map and pointed. “I just asked. It’s going relatively smoothly, and they haven’t encountered any monsters… They’re a bit ahead of us.”

“No rush,” Zhuang Lao said. “It’s nighttime now, so stay alert.”

It was widely known that in the world of “Code G,” zombies had a significant increase in abilities during the night, especially for unique mutant strains. The danger factor could be said to multiply exponentially.

Lin Zhaohe drew out his own dagger, flicking off the sticky residue and muttered, “Disgusting.” To avoid making noise, they tried not to use firearms and were forced to rely on their daggers.

Although he had seen numerous works depicting zombies, this was the first time he encountered them in reality. If he had to describe these creatures in one word, there was no doubt: repulsive.

Decaying corpses emitted an indescribable stench, and the dagger plunged into vital points became smeared with greenish slime. Lin Zhaohe stabbed at the zombies, stabbing until his consciousness blurred, feeling that his own unclean body was better off gone.

The sun descended beyond the valley, and the black veil of night enveloped the city. They were concerned that any source of light would attract the attention of the zombies. So, they decided not to use flashlights and instead put on night vision goggles to continue their journey.

After turning a corner, the man with his face masked suddenly halted his footsteps. “There’s a sound.”

“Where?” Lin Zhaohe listened intently but didn’t catch any sound.

“The supermarket ahead,” the man with his face covered said. “It’s a woman…” he added. “Are there still survivors here?”

Survivors? They had been walking for half a day and hadn’t seen a living soul. Lin Zhaohe pondered, “Logically, there should be, but…” Given the speed of this evolution, could the people here truly survive? He kept his thoughts to himself.

“I’ll go in and take a look,” the man with his face covered said.

“Wait,” Yu Zhuzhi spoke up. “That’s not our mission… Besides, it might not even be a person.”

The man with his face masked glanced at Yu Zhuzhi, ignoring him, and headed towards the direction of the sound. The others exchanged glances and reluctantly followed.

The crying sound came from a dilapidated supermarket by the roadside. As the man with his face covered entered, he was surprised to find a woman huddled in a corner, holding a baby in her arms. Their cries intertwined, a heart-wrenching sound.

“Are you okay?” the man paused a few steps away from the woman.

“Save my child,” the woman looked up, revealing a human face, not a monster. She cried, “I can’t find food or water. Are you sent by the government? Save us, please save us…”

“I have food and water here,” the man rummaged through his backpack, bowing his head as he searched for provisions.

Grateful, the woman stood up and walked towards the man.

The man handed the food and water to the woman, furrowing his brow slightly. “What’s wrong with your child?”

The woman replied, “My child is sick. Are you a doctor? Can you help me?” As she spoke, she extended her hands, offering the baby to him.

The man reached out, intending to take the baby.

Unexpectedly, at that very moment, something happened! The child, now in the man’s grasp, suddenly swelled in size, transforming into a massive, grotesque mouth with numerous fissures. It lunged towards the man, ready to bite down. With lightning-fast reflexes, the man swiftly evaded the monster’s attack, narrowly escaping its grasp.

“Watch out!” Lin Zhaohe, fully focused behind him, immediately fired several shots at the mutated zombie. He shouted, “Are you okay?”

Watching the woman and child collapsing together, the man stood frozen in place, seemingly stunned.

“This must be some kind of creature,” Lin Zhaohe recalled something. “A zombie that attaches itself to a host, retaining the biological state of the host… You…” The man’s triangular scarf, knocked off during the zombie’s attack, fell to the ground, and Lin Zhaohe caught sight of his face. He stood rooted to the spot, incredulous. “You, you’re… Yan?”

Lin Yan—the once celebrated, now infamous hero.

At the moment they laid eyes on Lin Yan’s face, the atmosphere within the group seemed to freeze.

It wasn’t just Lin Zhaohe who found it unbelievable. Qin Xu and Yu Zhuzhi wore expressions of disbelief as well. Yu Zhuzhi stammered, “You, you’re Lin Yan? You…”

Realizing that his face had been seen, Lin Yan’s complexion stiffened slightly. He reached for the triangular scarf, attempting to cover his face.

Qin Xu stepped forward, grabbing his hand and said, “Are you Lin Yan? Weren’t you captured by the government? Why are you here—” He immediately recalled that Madam Yan was a government agent and instantly understood. “They released you?”

Lin Yan furrowed his brow but didn’t answer.

“Damn it! You killed so many people and didn’t end up in prison. They just let you out??” Qin Xu clearly couldn’t accept this. “Why—”

He was a resident of this city and, naturally, a victim of the Lin Yan incident. All his relatives had died in the chaos, countless people perished at Lin Yan’s hands, and numerous others were trampled to death while fleeing. The scene was so chaotic that even their bodies couldn’t be found. Could you identify the portion of ground meat that belonged to your family from a pile of minced meat?

Qin Xu’s eyes reddened, his hand already reaching for his weapon. “Why, when I liked you so much, did you… do this?”

He had idolized this character, making it even more difficult for him to accept that his every ounce of affection for him had become a weapon to harm his loved ones.

In the original work, Lin Yan was so captivating, righteous, kind-hearted, resilient, and brave. His character was so good that he could be considered a saint… Why did he turn into a demon in reality?

Faced with Qin Xu’s questioning, Lin Yan lowered his gaze and remained silent.

“You…” Qin Xu wanted to say more, but he felt pressure on his shoulder. He turned his head and found that Zhuang Lao was holding his shoulder.

“Qin Xu, calm down a bit,” Zhuang Lao said softly.

Qin Xu: “I… How can I stay calm? He killed all of my loved ones…”

Zhuang Lao: “So what do you want to do?”

Qin Xu hesitated for a moment. Indeed, what did he want to do? Kill Lin Yan right here?

“There are more important matters at hand now. We can’t be without Lin Yan,” Zhuang Lao said softly. “Of course, you can choose to vent your anger…” He sighed faintly, relaxing the pressure on Qin Xu. “But sometimes, the truth may be more complicated than we think.”

More complicated? Qin Xu was taken aback by these words. Could there be some misunderstanding involved?

Qin Xu looked at Lin Yan again, but Lin Yan showed no intention of explaining. He put on the triangular bandage and turned to leave.

Lin Zhaohe dryly said, “Let’s go,” and followed after Lin Yan.
