Hospital.
Sun Honghong lay on the hospital bed, her head and hands wrapped in gauze. “What kind of bento did you buy? It’s terrible!” She exclaimed, hitting her chopsticks on the tray.
Han Yunru stood by the bed, trying her best to remain patient. “It’s from the cafeteria, and even the doctor eats this.”
“Who asked you to buy from the cafeteria? If the doctor eats it, do I have to eat it too? Now that I’m injured because of your husband, the doctor says I might have a concussion, and I need to rest well. Do you know what rest means? It means eating well, drinking well, and being in a good mood. But how are you taking care of me? You actually gave me this kind of food to eat? Is that even considerate?” Sun Honghong complained.
Han Yunru took a deep breath. “Okay, what do you want to eat? I’ll go buy it now.”
“That’s more like it. I won’t make it difficult for you. The doctor said I should have a light diet. How about getting me some fresh meat congee from Hua Shan Fu?” Sun Honghong suggested.
“Hua Shan Fu? Don’t take advantage of me!” Hua Shan Fu was a famous restaurant in Linhuai, and even a bowl of congee there was not affordable for a family like the Jiangs.
“What’s wrong? Worried about money? Let me remind you, Brother Jiang is still sitting in the police station. If I don’t let this go, will he go to jail?” Sun Honghong threatened.
“You!” Han Yunru gritted her teeth in anger.
Sun Honghong turned away and yawned exaggeratedly. “I’m tired. Hurry up and go buy it. It’ll be dark soon.”
“Do you want to eat fresh meat congee from Hua Shan Fu?” Suddenly, a smiling voice came from the entrance.
Jiang Fuyue stepped in and stopped in front of the bed with a condescending look. “Do you even deserve it?”
“Jiang Er, you’re here…” Han Yunru forced a smile.
Jiang Fuyue gave her a reassuring look.
“Oh, so you called your daughter too?” Sun Honghong sneered. “What? Are you planning to team up with your daughter to bully a sick person like me? Let me give you a piece of advice. Your daughter doesn’t seem to understand manners very well. You’d better teach her well, or she’ll ruin her life.”
“You’re a grown adult. If you have something to say, just say it. There’s no need to be so sarcastic and disgusting,” Han Yunru retorted like an angry mother hen.
She can endure a little grievance, but whoever dares to ridicule her daughter – no, it’s not acceptable!
Sun Honghong quickly exclaimed, “What are you doing? I just said it casually. Don’t take it seriously. Nowadays, no one listens to the truth anymore!”
Han Yunru was so angry that she gritted her teeth. Suddenly, she felt a warm sensation on the back of her hand. She turned to meet her daughter’s calm gaze. Jiang Fuyue gently patted her hand twice and said, “Mom, you go out first. Let me talk to this auntie alone for a while.”
“But…”
“Don’t worry.”
After Han Yunru left, the hospital room fell into a strange silence. Sun Honghong suddenly felt a chill on the back of her neck, and she couldn’t help but shift her body uncomfortably.
“What do you want to tell me?”
“I heard everything you said just now.”
“Well, that saves me from having to repeat myself. If you really love your mom and don’t want her to be bothered by running back and forth, why don’t you get the things for her? Remember to add some fresh shrimp, and no onions or ginger.”
“It seems that Aunt Sun is determined to extort my family,” Jiang Fuyue remarked.
“Hehehe…” Sun Honghong giggled. “Don’t say such harsh things. Your mom is just like you. Right now, I just want to focus on getting better. If I feel happy one day, I’ll go to the police station and explain things to the officers to get your dad released. But if I’m not happy…”
“Is that a threat?” Jiang Fuyue raised an eyebrow.
Sun Honghong, ignorant and fearless, replied, “If you say so.”
“It seems that only Mrs. Feng can talk to you properly,” Jiang Fuyue said, nodding as she turned to leave.
“Stop right there!” Sun Honghong’s hands and feet were cold, but she tried to keep up a calm façade. “Who’s Mrs. Feng and Mrs. Yu? I don’t understand what you’re talking about!”
Jiang Fuyue smirked. “If you really don’t understand, then you wouldn’t have asked me to stop.”
Sun Honghong’s face changed.
Jiang Fuyue paced back to the bedside and said, “You said you don’t know Mrs. Feng, but you must at least know Feng Junxiang, right?”
“I’m sorry, I’ve never heard of either of them,” the woman replied, though her grip on the bedsheet tightened unconsciously.
“Well, your memory must be terrible. After all, he was once your benefactor. You followed him for five years and even took off with most of his assets. How could you not remember their names?”
Sun Honghong’s face turned pale and she broke out into a cold sweat. She suddenly looked up and coldly asked, “Who are you? How do you know all of this?”
Ignoring her rage, Jiang Fuyue’s tone remained calm and even, “After you ran off with Feng Junxiang’s money, he got into a car accident and became a poor man without a penny or an arm. It was Mrs. Feng who stayed by his side and never left him. Now they have reconciled and are as loving as ever. You should be proud of your contribution to their happiness.”
“But this couple holds grudges and never forgets a slight. Especially Mrs. Feng, who used to be quite ruthless when she was young and relied on her father’s reputation to get away with all sorts of mischief in the northwest. She learned to be more restrained when she became a wife and mother, but that vicious streak still lurks within her. If I were to tell her about you being in Linhuai…”
“No! Please don’t tell her…” Sun Honghong trembled all over, her previous arrogance and smugness gone from her face, replaced with fear and pleading. “You can’t tell her, or I’m done for. Please, I’m begging you…”
Jiang Fuyue remained unmoved.
The woman immediately fell to her knees on the floor, bowing repeatedly, “I beg of you, I’ll die if you tell her. I really will…”
“Whether Mrs. Feng finds out or not depends on your next move, and whether or not it satisfies me,” Jiang Fuyue said before walking away without another glance at the woman.
That night, Sun Honghong settled her medical bills and checked out of the hospital. The next day, she went to the police station in person and admitted that she had attacked Jiang Da first, and that he had only acted in self-defense to protect his wife. She also stated that her injuries were not serious and that she did not intend to hold Jiang Da responsible for what had happened. She hoped the police would be lenient towards him.
Soon, Jiang Da was released.
Sun Honghong caught up with him and pleaded with him, “Brother Jiang, it’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have spread rumors about your wife, let alone laid a hand on her. I’m sorry, please forgive me.”
Jiang Da kept a cold face and walked forward.
“It’s okay if you don’t forgive me, but please help me plead with Yueyue and ask her not to do something so extreme. I’ll be grateful to her for the rest of my life!”
“Yueyue?” Jiang Da stopped and looked at the woman with a puzzled expression. “What does this have to do with her?”
Sun Honghong’s expression was indescribable for a while before she said, “Anyway, just help speak up for me! I promise not to trouble you and your wife anymore, even if I meet you, I will avoid you.”
Jiang Da went back home in confusion. Han Yunru was pacing anxiously in the house. When she saw him, she couldn’t help but be surprised.
“Husband, why are you back? Did the police station release you? How much do we have to compensate? Did Sun Honghong ask for an exorbitant amount?”
She thought that if Jiang Da could come out, the compensation issue must have been negotiated.
Otherwise, how could someone like Sun Honghong, who was only interested in profit, let go so easily?
But in reality –
“Sun Honghong explained everything at the police station and didn’t ask for any compensation.”
“How is that possible?” Han Yunru frowned.
Sun Honghong’s attitude at the hospital yesterday was not like this.
“And what about Yueyue?” Jiang Da asked.
