Xue Zheng banged his head to the ground again, and his forehead turned red: “This little girl was confused and she didn’t know what she was saying, I beg Your Majesty to forgive her sin!”

Murong Xiu said slowly: “Beloved official Xue, you should be clear about this matter. What is the crime?”

Xue Zheng lowered his head, his voice trembling inexplicably: “This little girl mistakenly…”

Xue Zhaoyi glanced at her father confused, “Father, why are you so afraid?” She turned to look towards Murong Xiu: “Your Majesty, this person wanted to molest this concubine in Zhaohua Palace!”

Following the direction of her finger, Murong Xiu looked over slowly.

The person in front of him was still in a pure black martial arts suit. The simple tied-up black hair like slippery silk made the picturesque face appear even colder.

His whole demeanour was akin to an unsheathed stern silver sword, which looked too out of place amongst the magnificent palace with its carved beams and neatly painted walls.

For some reason, seeing Murong Xiu’s gaze, Yan Changqing suddenly relaxed and smiled lightly. There was a touch of calmness and ease in his eyes which looked like bright black gems. This was the first time Yan Changqing smiled at him in half a month.

Murong Xiu slowly clenched his fists, but his face was still as calm as water: “You mean, you saw this person in Zhaohua Hall?”

“Yes!”

Murong Xiu looked back, “Liu Quan, did General Yan enter the harem today?”

Liu Quan knelt, shaking his head like a rattle, his tone was extremely determined: “Your Majesty, General Yan has been waiting for you in the front hall, and never entered the harem.”

Xue Zhaoyi suddenly looked back at Yan Changqing, and her whole being overcame with a feeling of dread.

What did she hear just now? General Yan?

Although she was a lady, she occasionally heard her father and brother talk about court affairs. So she deftly heard the name of the majestic young general Yan Changqing, who made the enemy flee in terror. When bored in the boudoir, she even occasionally imagined what kind of face he had underneath that hideous silver mask.

Xue Zhaoyi’s face turned pale. She gritted her teeth, threw caution to the wind, rushed over and slapped Liu Quan in the face: “Nonsense! Ben Gong’s two minions can testify, that it was in Zhaohua Hall. ——”

Murong Xiu raised his hand and interrupted Xue Zhaoyi. Raising his auspicious phoenix eyes gracefully framed by long eyelashes he beckoned: “Beloved official Xue?”

Xue Zheng got up looking a little worse for wear. He pulled his still fuming daughter from the ground. Pulling her aside, he said in a low voice: “If you say anything else, your father won’t be able to help you!”

Xue Zhaoyi never thought that her father, who always loved her, would suddenly take someone else’s side. She said in astonishment: “Daddy, you are a second-rank senior official, why are you afraid of a young general?”

Xue Zheng was stunned by this statement delivered to him by his reckless daughter. Not to mention that the so-called “young general” was half a rank higher than himself. With Yan Changqing’s prestige and the place he occupied in the Emperor’s heart, their Xue family can only wish for favours from him. Xue Zheng had always been aware of how spoiled his precious daughter was. She was aggressive, lawless, eager to compete, and could not tolerate the slightest grievance. Relying on the love of the Emperor and the Dragon seed in her belly, she never abided by the rules. If she was unhappy in the harem, she would take her anger out on the eunuch and the court ladies. Xue Zhaoyi even bullied other, less favoured, concubines. It was not that he had not heard of these occurrences. Fortunately for them, the Emperor just turned a blind eye to this as well.

But who is General Yan? Coming from three generations which served the Empire loyally, he had accompanied the emperor from a young age. He became an official at the age of seventeen. He was a young but very well-known general. For the sake of the stability of the Great Yan Kingdom, he did not even marry nor kept a concubine. How could it be possible for him to walk into the harem so rashly and assault the most favoured concubine?

It was far more probable that his spoiled daughter was trying to bully him.

God knows why General Yan was not pleasing to her eyes. Why had she unexpectedly decided to bother the other party? Isn’t that too similar to pulling at a tiger’s tail?

Xue Zheng reprimanded her once again in a low voice: “General Yan is far too disciplined and has not even come close to any one of the female sex. Don’t speak nonsense!”

Xue Zhaoyi felt wronged and still tried to justify herself stubbornly insisting: “But I obviously saw him…” Before she was done speaking, Xue Zhaoyi caught a glimpse of Yan Changqing’s silent profile and was stunned.

She stared at Yan Changqing’s profile. In the sun, the man’s profile was smooth and perfect. He had a beautiful brow bone and thin lips, all accompanied by a cold and stubborn aura. Xue Zhaoyi had lived in the harem for a long time, and knew best that this kind of cold temperament, like a sharp barb, can make men feel itchy and arouse their desire to conquer.

Especially Murong Xiu who was above ten thousand people.

Xue Zhaoyi suddenly understood why Murong Xiu always liked her wearing black men’s clothing in private. In those clothes, she looked very similar to Yan Changqing.

Xue Zhaoyi’s legs gave out and she collapsed to the ground, unable to utter a word. Murong Xiu lowered his eyes glancing at the Xue family’s father and daughter duo and snorted: “Beloved official Xue is not confused.”

He waved his hand gently: “Go back. Xue Zhaoyi forgot her manners in front of the court and spoke without thinking. Return to your palace and think things through carefully, only come out once you birth the child.”

Xue Zhaoyi was held up in a daze. She staggered again when she heard this sentence and was walked out by one of the servants.

Xue Zheng wiped the cold sweat from his forehead and breathed a sigh of relief. It seems that as long as there was the Dragon seed, the emperor will not pay too much mind too much to him and his precious daughter.

But whatever should he do if he had offended General Yan?

Zhang Jian playfully slapped at Xue Zheng’s sleeves and was about to retire, when Yan Changqing, who had been silent for a long time, suddenly said: “Two Darens’, please stay.”

Murong Xiu scolded the two ministers immediately: “Why aren’t you retreating?!”

Yan Changqing had already taken a step forward, blocking Zhang Jian and Xue Zheng’s path, kneeling properly and respectfully: “Your Majesty, please allow this general to lead troops to Mo Nan, expel the invaders, and rescue the people at the border!”

Murong Xiu closed his eyes. His right hand was clenched into a fist, trembling slightly.

Yan Changqing glanced over at Zhang Jian and Xue Zheng: “I assume at this time Master Zhang and Master Xue have come to discuss the affairs of Mo Nan.”

Zhang Jian looked at Murong Xiu’s face and let out an awkward cough.

Xue Zheng wondered to himself when it would be appropriate to go to Yan Changqing’s house to apologize. Seeing that Yan Changqing didn’t seem to blame him, he hurriedly followed up: “General Yan guessed right. I have also recommended to the Emperor that General Yan should go to Mo Nan. I wonder if General Yan is fully recovered?”

Yan Changqing nodded and smiled humbly: “Thank you, Master Xue, for your concern. I am all better now.”

Zhang Jian turned his head and glanced at Xue Zheng sympathetically.

Unexpectedly, Yan Changqing asked: “I don’t know if Master Zhang has a suitable candidate for the affairs of Mo Nan?”

Zhang Jian knew there was no way to retreat, so he had to say: “This… ~cough~ …Temporarily… Not yet…”

“Then what does Master Zhang think about sending me?”

Zhang Jian was caught off guard by Yan Changqing’s cold, threatening black eyes, and felt a sudden stab of pain in his chest. Right around the junction of two of his lower ribs.

That was the exact spot where Yan Changqing kicked him back in Qixia Village, breaking two of his ribs. Between that kick and the memories of almost being choked to death, a paralyzing terror swept over him once again.

“General Yan…General Yan is wise, brave, and experienced… He is… He is the best choice.”

Yan Changqing smiled humbly, and kowtowed down to Murong Xiu: “Your Majesty, please agree to these minister’s request!”
