Since receiving that message, a mysterious warmth had been surging in Wen Mo’s heart. He couldn’t resist making a trip to the attic. At this moment, he really wanted to see that lonely elderly Omega.
He wanted to tell him that there was still hope.
Maybe he wouldn’t understand his words, or maybe this was just the last flicker of a candle before the complete arrival of the night. But Wen Mo still wanted him to know that his fellow Omegas had always been struggling to survive.
From the past, to the present, and the uncertain future.
They were all striving to survive.
However, when Wen Mo entered the room, the elderly man had already fallen asleep. His thin and frail body was curled up under the blanket, motionless, like a long-deceased and weathered skeleton. The tea on the bedside table had turned cold, and the pale sunlight that fell on it was cold and silent. Everything was lifeless. Wen Mo stood there for a long time, sighed silently, and the warmth in his heart slowly subsided. He tiptoed out.
Returning to the room without any human presence, Wen Mo lay flat on the bed in a sprawled position, staring at the ceiling with open eyes. A strange and indescribable emotion gradually welled up within him, neither good nor bad, like a silent river that swallowed him. He closed his eyes and allowed himself to be immersed in that obscure and heavy darkness.
He fell asleep.
By the time Huo Yan finished his work, it was nearing dusk.
He went upstairs, heading straight for his room to find Wen Mo. The bedroom was very dark, with tightly drawn curtains. Huo Yan was about to turn on the light when a thought crossed his mind, and he left his hand hanging in the air.
He walked over and found that Wen Mo was indeed asleep.
Wen Mo was in a state of half-consciousness and confusion in his dreams. At times, he felt like his body was very heavy, as if it was being crushed by a colossal weight, making it hard for him to breathe. Suddenly, he woke up, looking around in bewilderment. His gaze settled on the man in front of him.
Soon, the confusion in his eyes dissipated, replaced by a gentle smile.
Huo Yan asked, “How long have you been asleep?”
“I don’t know,” Wen Mo lazily replied, his voice languid. “I just lay down, and the next thing I knew, it was already dark.”
He flashed a faint dimple and reached out to touch the eagle emblem on Huo Yan’s left chest.
“It looks impressive.”
Huo Yan moved Wen Mo’s hand away and leaned down to give him a kiss.
Then, he suddenly remembered that this was the first time he had allowed a lover into the bedroom he had slept in since he was a child. He couldn’t help but chuckle self-deprecatingly. His nostrils twitched slightly, detecting a hint of fragrance. He buried his nose in Wen Mo’s neck and sniffed, his desire evident. He unbuttoned one of Wen Mo’s buttons, pressing his nose against his skin. “Why do you smell even more enticing?”
Wen Mo’s pheromones were usually very faint, only becoming stronger when he was in a passionate mood. But now, the subtle white tea scent was noticeably richer, making Huo Yan’s heart race. He arched an eyebrow. “Did you take off the scent-neutralizing patch?”
Wen Mo felt a bit itchy and shifted away, saying, “No.”
He explained in a low voice, “My heat cycle is approaching.”
Omega’s heat cycle occurred roughly every six months, and Wen Mo had gone through five of them during his three years with Huo Yan. However, it had always been by coincidence that Huo Yan had missed them, so he had never experienced Wen Mo’s heat cycle before.
Seeing the furrow in Huo Yan’s brow, Wen Mo thought he might still be concerned about Wen Mo’s previous hospitalization. So he reassured him with a smile, “Don’t worry. Last time, I was hospitalized because I happened to catch a cold. I’ve asked the doctor to prescribe me some extra sedatives in advance, so it won’t happen again.”
He added, “I’ve already asked the doctor to prescribe me some extra tranquilizers in advance, so we won’t have a repeat of what happened last time.”
In his heart, however, Wen Mo was thinking that starting tomorrow, Huo Yan would be away at the military district for a week, and his heat cycle was about to begin in a day or two. This time, he had no intention of trying to endure it on his own. He had already been planning in his mind how to use a work-related excuse to have Zhang Qian come and spend a few days with him.
While thinking about it, he kissed Hao Yan affectionately and said, “You can rest assured; I promise I won’t cause any trouble.”
Hao Yan didn’t respond but turned him over. He peeled off the thin isolation patch on the back of his neck and smelled his glands through it. Feeling his desire, he knew that Hao Yan was in the mood. Since he also had something to ask of him, he complied and removed the patch.
The mood calmed down, and Hao Yan embraced Wen Mo, his breath heavy as he gently placed a kiss on Wen Mo’s forehead.
Wen Mo smiled, his cheeks blushing as he looked at him, radiating a charming and affectionate demeanor. He reached for their clothes.
Hao Yan sat up, lit a cigarette, and Wen Mo helped him with it, seizing the opportunity to speak naturally, “Fourth Sister has been looking for me lately, saying she wants to help with the military project in the West City.”
Hao Yan took a drag of his cigarette, looking at him coldly. “I thought you were acting like a vampire, but it turns out you were waiting for something.”
“Don’t be angry,” Wen Mo smiled and moved closer to him, leaning on him softly. His eyes dimmed, and he sighed, “In the Hao family, Fourth Sister is the only one who treats me like a friend and doesn’t look down on me as an Omega. Even if I can pass along a message for her, it’s a way to repay her kindness.”
Hao Yan glanced at him discontentedly, muttering, “You’re really being manipulated by this clever woman!”
Wen Mo remained silent, hanging his head in a somewhat dejected manner, quietly hugging his arm.
Hao Yan sneered, “But she also has a sharp eye, knowing to find you. Who am I to blame? After all, I love you the most. Go back and tell her that she can have this project, but she shouldn’t mess with the people I care about.”
Huo Yan took a drag of his cigarette, his eyes narrowing slightly. “This project is quite profitable, you better make sure I get a good cut.”
Wen Mo looked at him with confusion.
Huo Yan was truly exasperated. He pulled Wen Mo close by the neck and gave him a passionate kiss. “If I don’t look out for you, your bones will be chewed to pieces by someone else.”
He dialed Huo Ying’s phone in front of Wen Mo and said in a tone that was neither friendly nor unfriendly:
“You’re quite the strategist, Fourth Sister.”
On the other end of the phone, Huo Ying, with her sharp mind, quickly understood what this “Buddha” was talking about. She responded humbly and tried to make amends. Huo Yan couldn’t be bothered to chat with her, so he got straight to the point and secured a lucrative deal for Wen Mo with just a few words.
After hanging up the phone, Huo Yan felt like he had cheapened himself. However, when he saw Wen Mo gazing at him with admiration, he felt a sense of satisfaction. He pulled Wen Mo closer, lowered his head, and nibbled on his lips. “How did you manage to scheme your way into my bed, you little rascal?”
Wen Mo looked at him seriously and replied, “It’s the luckiest thing that ever happened to me in my life.”
Huo Yan remained silent, his hand on the back of Wen Mo’s neck, gently massaging the soft gland there. He observed Wen Mo for a while and suddenly, in a teasing tone, said, “Of course.”
He thought to himself, “The person I, Huo Yan, cherish will naturally have the best luck.”
He squeezed Wen Mo’s neck with his palm and added, “So, why don’t you come over and serve me?”
Wen Mo chuckled and knelt down to give him a massage.
At a nearby café not far from the base.
There weren’t many people in the afternoon, and it was so quiet that even the birds occasionally hopped down and perched on the light fixtures, chirping softly.
A red sports car pulled up in front of the café, and a tall and poised woman stepped out of the car. An attendant quickly approached, took her keys, and helped park the car.
Huo Ying removed her sunglasses and sat down across from Wen Mo, her red lips curling into a smile, “Thanks for helping me secure this project,.”
Wen Mo smiled faintly, “It was nothing, I just left a casual remark.”
Huo Ying’s face carried a hint of mockery, “Well, the cost of this ‘casual remark’ was quite substantial. The profit I’ll be making might not even cover it.”
She hailed the waiter and ordered a latte.
This was Wen Mo’s deal with her – if they successfully negotiated the project, she would earn a commission based on the total project investment. However, Huo Ying was taken aback by the large sum that Huo Yan had asked for, a whopping two billion yuan.
Wen Mo didn’t continue along that line of conversation and instead placed a card in front of Huo Ying. “Could you please transfer the money to this account?”
Huo Ying, still feeling a bit annoyed, agreed, “Fine, I’ll have the finance department transfer the funds to you this afternoon.”
She couldn’t resist making a snide comment, “Isn’t it comfortable enough for you to be pampered as the partner of the Huo family’s head? Why work so hard as a middleman?”
Wen Mo didn’t show any signs of annoyance. He simply took a sip of his coffee and smiled gently, saying, “Who knows how long it will last.”
Huo Ying raised an eyebrow, surprised by his candid response. She suddenly felt that it was rather pointless to argue with an Omega who was making a living as a middleman. She sighed, “You’re right. There’s nothing eternal in the Huo family.”
She chuckled self-deprecatingly, “Look at me, the Fourth Sister of the Huo family. It sounds nice, but in the end, I’m still here, trying to earn a living from an Omega. People like us in the eyes of the Huo family head are just slightly better than strangers.”
In the Huo family’s survival philosophy, there was no room for brotherhood and camaraderie. Except for the one standing at the top, the rest were either dead or enslaved.
“But I’m content. After all,” she looked at Wen Mo, her eyes indifferent as if discussing something quite ordinary, “Commander Huo has shed quite a bit of our uncles’ and aunts’ blood. Of course,”
She shifted to a more relaxed position. “Those people were ready to blow his head off.”
Wen Mo lowered his gaze and blew on the rim of his cup, causing the steam to blur his face.
“That’s because most of the Huo family’s genes are ambitious. Luckily, I have clear self-awareness. Being a tool for the Huo family is better than being buried underground like those others.”
Huo Ying smiled as her lips curled up. “So, you’re just like me. We talk about money, not emotions, with our Huo family members.”
“You’re mistaken,” Wen Mo said calmly, setting down his cup. “I love him.”
Huo Ying seemed to see through everything and let out a mocking laugh. She twirled the card between her fingertips and placed it into her small handbag. She put on her sunglasses and glanced at Wen Mo once more, giving him a flirtatious smile. “Alright, brave Omega in love. Let’s continue our cooperation.”
Wen Mo watched her walk away, when she was out of sight, he brought his gaze back and checked the clock on the bar. It was almost 2 o’clock in the afternoon. He reached into his pocket, turned on the phone, and composed a text message.
“Funds will be transferred in batches tomorrow.”
After the screen displayed “Message sent successfully,” he turned off the phone and nonchalantly took a sip of his coffee.
When Huo Yan disembarked from the private jet, it was already 10 PM. A dozen bodyguards accompanied him as he boarded a waiting car. As he settled into his seat, he suddenly had a thought and dialed Wen Mo’s number. However, the phone rang for a long time with no answer.
Huo Yan frowned as he was about to hang up when the other person finally answered. The voice on the other end was soft and somewhat dreamy, as if the person had just woken up from a nap.
“Sir?”
Huo Yan’s slight displeasure quickly dissipated, and he replied, “I’ve arrived.”
Huo Yan couldn’t help but imagine the surprise that must have crossed Wen Mo’s face when he, as an Omega, realized that Huo Yan had called just to say this.
As expected, there was a brief silence on the other end of the phone, followed by a voice with restrained emotions. “Hmm, come back early.”
Huo Yan chuckled and hung up the phone.
However, what he didn’t know was that, at the moment he hung up, the other person’s phone slipped from their grasp, and Wen Mo let out a sob. His whole body felt like a fish out of water as he gasped for breath, tears streaming down his face. But he was immediately silenced with a kiss.
The phone was knocked aside once more, slipping from the smooth silk sheets and falling beneath the bed.
