Chapter 707: Breaking Through the Siege

A tall, handsome man in a light blue long robe, with tightly bound black hair, stood at the front of the carriage. He gritted his teeth and drove the carriage forward, causing great chaos.

It was none other than the disguised Donghui.

Yuwen Cong’s attention was completely captured. He stared at Donghui for a moment, his eyes lighting up with excitement. He shouted loudly, “Stop him! Stop that carriage! Stop that carriage!”

Upon hearing this, Yuwen Qiang stood up, snatched the wolf-toothed club from the hands of a bodyguard, and quickly rushed forward a few steps. He stepped on a refugee’s shoulder, leaped into the air, and landed on a horse. Squeezing the horse’s flanks with his legs, he dragged the wolf-toothed club and galloped towards Donghui.

Yuwen Cong, knowing Yuwen Qiang’s immense strength, feared he might accidentally kill Donghui and the people in the carriage. He hurriedly chased after him, shouting, “Your Highness, be gentle!”

Yuwen Qiang’s horse charged forward swiftly, and it was unclear if he heard the warning.

At this moment, there was a commotion from behind. Someone shouted loudly in the crowd, “It’s not good! There’s murder! People are dead… Run! Run quickly!” The refugees waiting to cross the border panicked and surged forward.

When is a better time to run if not now? Without hesitation, Mingzhu retreated into the crowd, tightly holding onto Su Momo’s arm, struggling to run out.

Yuwen Cong suddenly remembered Mingzhu and the others, hurriedly turned back, and commanded the soldiers, “Stop those few people for me!”

Before he could finish, a gleaming sword whizzed towards his face, the blade moving so fast it left an afterimage. Despite his quick reflexes, even with his guards rushing to his aid, his helmet was knocked off, and he had to awkwardly fall to the ground to avoid the next wave of attacks.

Jingsong, his face covered, wielded his sword with increasing speed, each strike more deadly than the last, aiming directly at Yuwen Cong’s heart and forcing him into a frantic defense. Despite the dire situation, Yuwen Cong still managed to shout loudly, “Go capture that pregnant woman!”

A fierce gleam flashed in Jing Song’s eyes. He turned and swung his sword, aiming a diagonal thrust at Yuwen Cong’s heart. Yuwen Cong, terrified and drenched in cold sweat, grabbed a nearby guard and shoved him forward to block the blade. Jing Song only managed to stab the guard’s left shoulder deeply. Before he could make another move, the other guards had already surrounded him. Realizing the situation, Jing Song regretfully muttered to himself. He feigned a few moves to buy time until Mingzhu and the others could escape with the crowd. Then, he swiftly and cleanly made his own escape.

Mingzhu was pushed and shoved by the surging crowd, unable to control her own movements. Her mind was blank, not thinking about anything except one thing: I need to run, I must run, I have to leave this place smoothly to give Dong Hui and Jing Song a better chance to survive…

Su Momo and Jiang Zhouzi did their best to protect her from the irrational crowd, following the direction of the fleeing crowd. After running a distance and finding an opportunity, they slipped away from the surging crowd and into a nearby small grove.

All three of them were sweating profusely. Except for the bundles tied behind them, they had lost everything else. But escaping with their lives was a blessing. Mingzhu leaned on Su Momo, gasping for breath. She felt her abdomen tightening uncomfortably.

Su Momo quickly called Jiang Zhouzi, who checked Mingzhu’s pulse, pretending to be nonchalant and mocking, “They say that mothers are strong, right? What’s the big deal? You’ve been scared into this state. Have you forgotten the breathing techniques I taught you before? Have you forgotten everything?”

Seeing his calm demeanor and mocking tone, Mingzhu felt resentful and clenched her teeth, forcing herself to calm down, adjust her breathing, and follow Jiang Zhouzi’s rhythm. Gradually, the tightness in her abdomen eased, and her complexion improved.

Jiang Zhouzi, still holding her pulse, noticed her change and secretly breathed a sigh of relief. He said lightly, “That’s better. Remember, you’re only a little over four months pregnant, not about to give birth. Running a few steps and encountering some fright is nothing at this stage. Rural women work hard in the fields even when they’re about to give birth.”

Mingzhu managed to force a smile through her difficulty, “Sir is right, I’ll remember.” For the sake of the baby in her belly, she would strive to become stronger.

Su Momo peered out from behind the bushes, hoping to see the movements of Dong Hui and Jing Song. However, she could see nothing but fewer and fewer refugees and more and more soldiers.

Jiang Zhouzi asked Mingzhu, “Can you walk? We must leave here, or there will be a large-scale search later, and all the efforts of Jing Song and Dong Hui will be in vain.”

With red eyes, Mingzhu glanced at the road and stood up, saying softly, “Let’s go.” She took the lead and walked forward.

Jiang Zhouzi’s eyes revealed a hint of admiration as he silently stepped forward to scout the path. Su Momo hurried to catch up and whispered, “Let me scout ahead. You stay back and cover us.”

Jiang Zhouzi shook his head. “In terms of skills, I might not be better than you, but when it comes to experience in the world, how can you compare to me? Just follow behind obediently and don’t cause trouble.”

Su Momo’s face unexpectedly turned slightly red at his words, but she didn’t argue and quietly followed him.

Mingzhu turned back every few steps, hoping to see Donghui and Jing Song catching up. Each time she was disappointed, her heart felt weighed down, making it hard to breathe and bringing tears to her eyes.

Jiang Zhouzi seemed to know what she was thinking and said calmly, “Their duty is to protect you. Staying alive and not causing trouble is the best way you can help and appreciate their efforts. Stop overthinking. Don’t let their efforts go to waste.”

Mingzhu didn’t want to talk to him, stubbornly wiped her eyes, and kept her head down as she walked forward. Jiang Zhouzi walked with a steady rhythm, and she unconsciously matched his pace, finding herself breathing in sync and not feeling tired even after walking a long distance.

Jiang Zhouzi looked at the sky and said, “Let’s rest here and have something to eat to regain our strength.”

Mingzhu thought there would be nothing to eat or drink, but she saw Jiang Zhouzi untie the bundle from his back and take out water and dry food. Surprised, she said, “I thought you kept important things like medicine or knives in there.”

Jiang Zhouzi sneered, “A set of gold needles is enough. As for medicine, you can find whatever you need on the roadside. When traveling, the most important thing is food and drink. As long as you’re alive, what else do you need?”

Mingzhu agreed deeply, “Sir is truly wise. I’ve learned a lot.”

A hint of satisfaction flashed in Jiang Zhouzi’s eyes as he handed her the softest white pancake, “Don’t worry, Meimei and Jiaojiao are both skilled. They have plenty of experience traveling the world. Even if something happens to Jing Song and the others, they will quickly catch up. When they do, we’ll have better days ahead.”
