Chapter 708: Relay Station

<Previous Chapter<Table of Contents>Next Chapter>

Hearing Jiang Zhouzi mention something happening to Jing Song and the others, Mingzhu felt uncomfortable and corrected him seriously, “Nothing will happen to them.”

Jiang Zhouzi didn’t contradict her. He said seriously, “Yes, nothing will happen to them. They will definitely catch up.”

The three fell silent and quickly filled their stomachs before continuing on their way. The weather in March was neither too hot nor too cold, with beautiful scenery of peach blossoms and pear blossoms, and lush green leaves. Jiang Zhouzi felt the atmosphere was too heavy and tried to lighten the mood for Mingzhu, saying, “You’re lucky to be fleeing in such pleasant weather. If it were before, during heavy snow or rain, it would have been much tougher…”

Suddenly, Su Momo made a “shh” sound, and all three of them became nervous. Mingzhu instinctively hid behind Jiang Zhouzi, remembering his claim of extensive experience in the martial world.

Because they wanted to smoothly pass through the checkpoint, none of them had brought weapons. Jiang Zhouzi pulled out a bottle from his pocket and handed it to Mingzhu, “If anything happens, find a safe place to sit and don’t meddle. If someone bothers you, sprinkle the powder in this bottle into their eyes.”

“But you said you didn’t have any medicine on you?” Mingzhu clutched the bottle tightly, her legs trembling. She thought about how she would have to give Yuwen Chu a hard time when she returned to the capital, but the thought of him made her feel even more aggrieved.

Rolling his eyes, Jiang Zhouzi said, “Why are you so concerned?” As an experienced person in the martial world, he rarely believed anyone.

Just then, a face appeared in the bushes ahead, with big eyes and a sunken face. Who else could it be but He Wenzhong? When He Wenzhong saw them, he smiled and quickly ran out, saying, “I finally found you.”

Mingzhu immediately breathed a sigh of relief, “Ah, my courage was almost scared out of me.”

Jiang Zhouzi also busied himself putting away his mysterious bottles and jars, getting closer to He Wenzhong, “Little brother, what brings you to find us? Didn’t you go back to the city?”

He Wenzhong smiled, “Of course, it’s from above.” After speaking, he ignored Jiang Zhouzi and leaned close to Mingzhu, whispering, “It was Brother Yang, who wore a mask and used a sword to kill someone, who sent me to find you. He told me to listen to you and not to listen to anyone else, especially not to this smiling old man.”

Mingzhu, upon hearing that it was arranged by Jing Song, felt reassured, “First, take us out, then find a suitable place to settle down.” Jing Song and Dong Hui’s fate was unknown, so they needed to stay to investigate and see if there was any way to help.

He Wenzhong looked at Mingzhu with concern, “We have to go far. Can you manage?”

Mingzhu forced a smile, “I can.”

Seeing Mingzhu and He Wenzhong whispering to each other, Jiang Zhouzi felt very displeased. He said coldly, “Are we leaving or not? If we don’t leave soon, the pursuers will come.”

Mingzhu remained silent, walking behind Jiang Zhouzi in silence. She still followed his rhythm, coordinating her breathing and steps, which greatly saved her energy. Jiang Zhouzi noticed and slowed down a bit without showing it.

The group hid and sneaked until they reached a relay station as night fell. The relay station was dilapidated, desolate, and dimly lit, with a lantern swaying in the night wind, giving it an eerie feel. Su Momo hesitated to enter, “The relay station is usually busy, and if they search, this place will be the first to be checked. Isn’t it risky?”

He Wenzhong said, “It’s safe. The stationmaster inside is one of ours, and our things are hidden inside. We’ll wait here for Brother Yang and the others. Let me go in first and then call you.” With that, he went in first.

Jiang Zhouzi whispered, “Wangfei needs to rest. We have no choice but to go in.”

Mingzhu was nearly exhausted and just wanted to find a warm place to rest. While Jiang Zhouzi and the others discussed, she had already found a sheltered spot to sit against the wall and catch her breath. The combined journeys of her two lifetimes were nothing compared to today’s. If she hadn’t experienced it herself, she wouldn’t have believed she could do it.

He Wenzhong came out, holding a steaming white bun. “Come in quickly. The food smells deliciously warm.”

Mingzhu’s mouth watered. She perked up and followed him briskly inside. Two station attendants stood at the door, expressionless, with gleaming eyes. He Wenzhong pointed to the taller one, “This is Shen Fifth Brother.”

Mingzhu smiled sweetly at the tall attendant, “Fifth Brother.”

Shen Fifth nodded at her, then looked at Jiang Zhouzi inquisitively. Jiang Zhouzi pointed at Mingzhu, “I’m her father,” then pointed at Su Momo, “This is her mother,” and pulled Su Momo into his arms, “We’re a couple.”

Shen Fifth glanced at Jiang Zhouzi as if he were an idiot, then turned his gaze to Mingzhu, “Dinner is ready. Please come in.”

It seemed like another case of someone who only listened to Mingzhu and treated him like air. Jiang Zhouzi sneered, following closely behind Mingzhu into the room. Dinner was simple, with several bowls of rice, a bowl of braised pork, a bowl of greens, and several steamed buns.

Jiang Zhouzi reached out to grab a steamed bun, but Mingzhu slapped his hand away with a loud “pa.” This heartless man, now that he had subordinates trembling under him, thought he could do as he pleased? Jiang Zhouzi was quite annoyed. “What are you doing?”

Mingzhu moved the steamed buns in front of her and firmly stated, “Save them for the others.” This way, whenever Jing Song and the others arrived, they would have something to eat and could use the buns as rations while on the run.

Jiang Zhouzi considered this and rolled his eyes at Mingzhu. “I’m eating first!”

He wanted to check if the food was safe, always better to be cautious. Mingzhu put down her chopsticks and watched him eagerly. When she saw him devour half a bowl of braised pork in an instant, she quickly shielded the bowl and scolded, “Shameless.”

Jiang Zhouzi laughed and, thick-skinned, asked Shen Fifth, “Is there more? Sorry, I was too hungry.”

Shen Fifth nodded to the other attendant, who brought out another bowl of braised pork. They quickly ate their fill. Mingzhu, feeling refreshed, asked Shen Fifth, “Is there any news about my elder brother and the others?”

Shen Fifth frowned, “Huan Wang is valiant and fierce. I heard that he smashed a horse and a woman to death with a wolf’s tooth club today, and the rest of the people were taken back to Huan Wang’s mansion…”

Mingzhu’s vision darkened instantly. She grabbed Su Momo’s hand tightly to barely maintain her composure, “Is there anything else?”

Shen Fifth said, “Also, Yuwen Cong was injured by someone. The assassin escaped successfully and whereabouts are unknown. Furthermore, all the roads ahead have checkpoints, and the inspections are very strict, with wanted posters posted everywhere.” He took out several sketches, showing portraits of Mingzhu and her companions. Though crude, they were quite recognizable.
