Top Warzone Analyst Chapter 151

Down the Mountain

To show the team’s sincerity, Xiang Yunjian and the others had basically set aside their best supplies for Cheng Feng.

They were on the outskirts of the suburbs, where foot traffic was heavy and there was plenty of cover. Supplies were burning through like water – no matter how much they had, it just wasn’t enough. They didn’t even dare to loot carelessly from dropped packs.

That batch of supplies alone had already been squeezed out through gritted teeth. When Yan Shen asked for one extra smoke grenade, the others couldn’t bear to part with it – in the end, they only quietly slipped him fifty rounds from the ammo box.

The old father’s painstaking devotion was enough to move anyone to tears.

Yan Shen asked, “If it were me being left behind, would you prepare such a generous care package for me?”

He was starting to want to switch lives with Cheng Feng.

“Dream on,” Jiang Linxia said. “But don’t dream too long – it’s easy to lose yourself.”

That treatment, though…

Even if you weren’t a military student, just watching what was happening on Cheng Feng’s side was enough to strike a chord with countless examinees. But when that sense of empathy drifted over to Xiang Yunjian and his group, it soured into pure schadenfreude.

Even the livestream moderator, clearly enjoying the chaos, spliced the footage from both sides together.

On one screen: Xin Kuang, after agonizing hesitation, humbly reaching out a hand and bargaining, “Just give me ten more bullets – call it an advance from Cheng Feng. I’ll pay her back when I get more.”

On the other screen: Cheng Feng casually tossing things behind her, waving a hand in annoyance, “Too much. Can’t use it all. Don’t want it.”

Netizens were practically falling over themselves in the comments section, smashing the “H” key like there was no tomorrow.

“The landlord’s daughter! The chosen one!”

“This is the first time I’ve seen someone with this much wealth right from the start!”

“This is the kind of sight that could make every military cadet cry.”

“Thanks to Comrade Ye Fugui for the generous tips to her three bodyguards!”

“Watching Xiang Yunjian and the others scrimp and scrape like that – my heart aches! Hahahaha!”

“I can testify – some shadows might never heal. Case in point: Jiang Linxia watching the replay.”

“Screenshot taken. From now on, wherever Xiang Yunjian’s team shows up, this video will be there too!”

The camera panned around for a while, then swung back to Cheng Feng’s side.

Even the things she didn’t want, Cheng Feng didn’t just toss aside carelessly – she packed them up and hid them away, burying them in tree pits under leaves or tucking them beneath rocks.

Who knew – if they ever found themselves scraping by with nothing left, they might come back for them.

Though the chances of that were next to zero.

She did a full inventory count. Including all the supplies from before, their four-person team currently had a total of 41 explosive devices, 85 grenades, 61 directional demolition rounds, and 40 smoke grenades. On top of that, they had two types of ammunition in quantities too large to even tally.

Cheng Feng was careful with the smoke grenades – after all, those could be a lifesaver in critical moments, and they suited a data analyst best. So she took 35 of them.

Of the remaining supplies, she took half and left the rest for the other three to divide among themselves.

Zhong Yijie and the others had no objections. Of course the best gear should go to the MVP – and besides, what trickled through Cheng Feng’s fingers was already more than they ever dared to imagine having.

This wasn’t just getting the leftovers – this was a whole pork hock smacking them in the face!

What overwhelming fortune!

The three of them were completely lost in the moment, unable to snap out of it.

“I really didn’t expect this mountain to be this rich,” Watermelon exclaimed, dazed and dreamy. “Thanks, Sister Feng!”

“Thanks, Sister Ye!”

“Thanks, MVP.” Zhong Yijie chimed in lazily.

Cheng Feng’s shoulders felt sore and heavy from all the loaded gear – if it weren’t for the exoskeleton equipment, she probably wouldn’t have been able to move around nimbly anymore.

Even so, she still couldn’t carry all of it away in one go, so she found another safe spot and stashed the rest again.

Listening to the three of them sing her praises, she looked up with an expression that said “Say no more – I get it,” and replied, “Don’t mention it. We’re all comrades here.”

Amid a modest round of applause, Cheng Feng raised a hand to gesture for quiet.

She turned sideways, striking a lofty pose against the wind, and announced, “The time has come. Let’s get ready to head down the mountain.”

Zhong Yijie snapped out of his daze and asked, “How are we getting down? Did they leave?”

Cheng Feng said matter-of-factly, “We’re blasting our way down, of course!”

With a human arsenal like theirs, where couldn’t they go? Even if they just popped smoke grenades all the way down the southern slope, they could escape that way – violently breaking through was how the big shots did it!

But if she didn’t harvest those fifty or so heads in the middle, her heart would ache.

Cheng Feng rubbed her chin and said, “We really do need to plan out the route.”

For now, she didn’t know how those fifty or so people were arranged in formation guarding the mountain, but one thing was certain – they weren’t a solid interest group either.

Especially as time went on: with no more examinees coming down the mountain and no significant gains to be made, their cooperation would start to fracture from within.

As dawn approached, when the characters were at their most fatigued, that would be their best chance to strike.

All the examinees would have to stay on guard against someone putting a bullet in their back from behind, so they’d definitely keep a certain safe distance from each other. Best to stick close to their teammates so they could turn on each other or save themselves at a moment’s notice.

So this group was probably positioned in small clusters of two or three, scattered loosely around.

Their plan: open a path straight through the middle with brute-force bombardment.

With the chaos, disrupted sightlines, and overwhelming firepower – under such harsh conditions – most examinees would likely be forced to retreat to the sides.

North of the middle mountain path was a row of increasingly steep cliffs; most people wouldn’t run that way. If anyone truly reckless did, they could be written off – just send them on their way.

So they’d only need to place one bodyguard on the south side to snipe and clear out any examinees who exposed themselves.

The closer to the south, the more open the terrain – a great spot for ambushes.

Cheng Feng once again entrusted this critical task to Watermelon – Zhong Yijie had said Watermelon was their team’s sniper.

Comrade Watermelon gave a solemn salute. “I will not fail my mission!”

Zhong Yijie rolled his eyes. “You haven’t even done anything yet. Calm down, buddy.”

“Oh, sorry.” Watermelon lowered his hand, hugging his rifle sheepishly. “Reality’s just too beautiful – I thought it was already over.”

Cheng Feng chuckled and waved them on. “Let’s move out.”

The four of them approached the combat zone in the middle of the mountain.

Cheng Feng lay prone in the grass, and from a distance, she handed Zhong Yijie a smoke grenade, signaling for him to toss it downhill.

Zhong Yijie was highly skilled at throwing grenades – with the aid of his equipment, he could hurl them over a hundred meters with ease.

The smoke grenade rolled further down along the curve of the mountain path, finally coming to a stop over two hundred meters away, releasing a thick cloud of smoke.

Intense gunfire instantly erupted all around that area.

Cheng Feng crawled forward a bit and handed Zhong Yijie another one.

His second throw was even better than the first – helped by the steeper slope and favorable night wind – landing roughly three hundred meters out.

After the toss, he rolled his shoulders with satisfaction and asked, “What’s the deeper meaning behind this?”

“No deeper meaning.” Cheng Feng propped herself up on one arm, eyes fixed ahead. “Just messing with their heads.”

Zhong Yijie’s expression froze.

He didn’t know whether the people down there were losing their minds, but his was about to.

What a spendthrift! Couldn’t she be a little more frugal?!

The enemies’ aim shifted downward, tracking the smoke’s position.

Relying on sound to gauge the approximate distance of the group, Cheng Feng took the lead, crouching low as she ran downhill. Zhong Yijie and the other teammate quickly followed suit.

As Cheng Feng handed over the third smoke grenade, Zhong Yijie didn’t dare to take it. Wincing, he grabbed her wrist and pushed her hand down, whispering urgently, “Stop with the baiting! It’s such a waste! All these people’s supplies – won’t they be ours eventually anyway?”

This guy had some foresight.

Cheng Feng said, “Throw it. We move as soon as it’s down.”

The third smoke grenade went out.

By now, the enemies had probably realized they were being baited, and the examinees at the very top didn’t want to waste any more ammunition, so they only fired a few perfunctory shots.

The assault slowed.

With a hand signal from Cheng Feng, Zhong Yijie and the other teammate immediately lowered their upper bodies, kicked off the muddy ground, and charged down at full speed.

Watermelon had also taken his position on the south side, ready to aim and snipe.

The art of explosion unfolded magnificently through the deep night.

Hot weapons rained down thicker than raindrops, thundering forward in an overwhelming onslaught.

Cheng Feng blasted to the left, while Zhong Yijie and his buddy handled the right.

Absolute firepower superiority created the illusion of a thousand troops charging.

Scorching waves of heat from the explosions rolled out with sand and earth in every direction, while the deafening roars struck like thunderbolts from the sky right onto the heads of those examinees.

One moment they were still groggy with drowsiness; the next, shock and terror erupted from within them like a volcano.

They had to admit – they knew nothing about the world of the rich.

A roar echoed through the mountains: “How many loot drops did they even hit?! Animals!”

Immediately, someone else howled in response.

And whether they were within the line of fire or not, examinees were already fleeing in panic.

It wasn’t worth it – not worth dying on the front line for this kind of flimsy, makeshift team.

Seeing the ranks scatter, one stubborn examinee still refused to give up, shouting from behind, “There are sixty-one of us!”

Even if none of them were actually on the same side.

“Could the resources from that many packs really not match theirs?!” the young man bellowed. “Throw everything! Fight back!”

“You throw, then! Am I stopping you? Where are you gonna throw? Can you even see anything right now?!”

When the number of smoke grenades exceeded 15, directional demolition rounds surpassed 30, and hand grenades were too numerous to count, even the toughest young man’s math skills failed him.

He fought and retreated, only to quickly realize that there was hardly anyone left around him – and that he himself was about to be pushed off the entire mountain.

His quick-witted teammate had decided mid-battle to go off-script and head back up the mountain instead, but before he could even signal him to follow, he was ruthlessly sent out of the exam by explosive devices planted up there.

That group was utterly unhinged – they’d scattered hot weapons all over the mountain like worthless trash. They could weave through obstructed sightlines with incredible flair, and every hideout he knew of had been wiped out in one go. Any examinee stubborn enough to refuse to relocate had been sent straight out to meet the instructor.

Their completely irrational actions even triggered a series of brutal internal skirmishes.

By the end, no one could tell who was who anymore – everyone was just blindly firing at everything.

Some defeatist examinees, figuring that even if they died, they couldn’t let their supplies fall into enemy hands, only added fuel to the chaos.

At this moment, he stood utterly isolated, as if surrounded by a pack of madmen closing in from all directions – the only sane person left in the entire world.

The young man’s voice trembled. “Why am I so poor?”

Nearby examinees, upon hearing this, nearly shed tears. “You’re not alone!”

The young man cursed angrily, “Is this path really that long?! How are they still not down the mountain yet?! Damn it!”

Cheng Feng ran all the way down the mountain, picking up supplies scattered along the road as she went.

She had used up most of her equipment midway, but by the time she reached the foot of the mountain, she was carrying one item in her left hand, two in her right, and one hanging in front and behind her.

Not only did she pick up supplies for herself, but she also grabbed two loot drops for Zhong Yijie along the way, shoving them into his arms and dragging him toward shared prosperity.

Too bad she didn’t have three heads and six arms – that really held her back.

Zhong Yijie’s partner had been wounded in the left leg by a blast and could only hobble down the mountain. He hastily applied some first aid to the injury, gritting his teeth, but a grin was spreading across his face – his expression under the mask was utterly ferocious.

He glanced back with lingering excitement, then quickened his pace, bouncing forward in a limping sprint.

Zhong Yijie’s other two teammates had already found a place to camp at the foot of the mountain. When they learned the others were charging down, they came to the base ahead of time to provide backup.

They figured they’d either be collecting bodies or sharing life and death together. But instead, they saw the group running toward them loaded down with bags and bundles, leaving the two of them standing there dumbfounded. They had to double-check the map several times before daring to confirm that these really were their own brothers. Their mouths hung open for a long time, unable to close.

One young man blurted out, “You’re too kind! You came all this way – and you brought gifts too?!”

The person next to him gave him a hard slap on the back. “Wake up! This isn’t New Year’s!”

The young man could no longer hide his shock. “Holy crap! If it’s not New Year’s, then why all these bags and bundles?! Does this even make any sense?!”

He was bitter! Even if they were his own teammates, he was still bitter! He’d never been this wealthy in his entire life, okay?!

Zhong Yijie tossed one of the packs into his arms, drenched in sweat, and urged, “Run! What are you standing around for? Watch out – someone might snatch it!”

The group snapped out of it and hurriedly took the lead, guiding the way forward.

Meanwhile, the unusually fierce commotion from the mountain road traveled halfway across the map to where Xiang Yunjian and the others were stationed.

Jiang Linxia was on night watch. For what felt like the umpteenth time that night, he gazed into the distance at the faint red glow and muttered under his breath, “Are those people over on that mountain… completely insane? It’s only day one, for crying out loud!”

This era is hailed as the worst for manually-operated mecha. Having been rebuilt amid high expectations, this profession barely glimpsed the brilliance of victory before it was once again on the verge of fading from the stage of history, condemned to decline. Everyone mocked, ridiculed, and questioned it, believing that manually-operated mecha had buried the youth of countless individuals and had already reached its end. That year, the United Federation University admitted a "seemingly unusual-minded" new student. The following year, the long-silent world of manually-operated mecha was swept by an unprecedented hurricane, violently clearing the fog that had long obscured its path forward. "We are unfortunate to stand at the lowest point of this era, but I firmly believe that you are the rising flames." She would become the very first spark to lead the way.
