A few others who had been sleeping also woke up.
Xiang Yunjian asked in the team channel, “What’s going on?”
“No idea.” Jiang Linxia stood on the rooftop, leaning forward as he strained to make out the scene in the distance. He exclaimed in surprise, “Are they really going that hard?”
Xiang Yunjian stepped up beside him, observed for a moment, and said with a slightly grave expression, “For some reason, there are an unusually large number of people over by the mountain this year.”
Jiang Linxia tried to contact Cheng Feng, calling out repeatedly over the comms.
Cheng Feng was busy dividing up the loot and didn’t reply.
Yan Shen yawned, turned over, and said, “Prepare for the worst. Grab a few extra kills to secure the team MVP. Our infantry MVP doesn’t seem to be having much luck.”
Jiang Linxia glanced at the map. “But Cheng Feng isn’t dead – she even made it down the mountain!”
He paused, then said thoughtfully, “With such a dangerous firefight going on, Cheng Feng actually survived? Zhong Yijie and the others are pretty impressive!”
The off-field instructors overheard the few of them talking, and their faces were etched with expressions of utter speechlessness.
The instructor beside them had already waved a hand and walked off, signaling that he couldn’t bear to watch any longer – better to wait until after a good night’s sleep before dealing with it, or else tonight would be nothing but nightmares.
Before coming down the mountain, during the sweep through the north, Cheng Feng’s kill count had already been updated to 14.
On the chaotic rush down the mountain afterward, although her positioning wasn’t ideal and she relied mostly on blind throws, she still managed to rack up 11 more kills purely by feel amidst the mayhem.
She now had 25 points.
The kind of commanding presence that says “kill one every ten paces, leaving no trace for a thousand miles” – she had it.
Meanwhile, Watermelon was stationed on the sidelines, picking off enemies with sniper shots – the perfect farming spot for points. Coordinated with Zhong Yijie and the others’ heavy assault, the team’s total score also barely broke past twenty, breaking their own record from last year.
And this was only day one.
The instructor’s brow furrowed and then relaxed. The more he replayed the scene, the more conflicted he felt – a tangled mix of emotions, laced with an urgent frustration over squandered potential. After a long pause, he let out a dry chuckle and said to the colleague beside him, “What a pity Xiang Yunjian and the others aren’t here. If it had been their squad, they probably could’ve gotten over 30 kill points in that one wave alone.”
What he was really thinking, though, was a string of curses.
The few people around him nodded awkwardly, not daring to make a sound. In their hearts, they were already offering silent condolences: If those four blockheads don’t come find Cheng Feng soon, this pent-up frustration is going to burn into a wildfire of resentment – just from the crisp snap of his fingers, you could tell.
But Cheng Feng’s performance, on the other hand, had been soaring without pause. The practical application of her specialized skills on the battlefield was proving far more effective than they had ever imagined. Add to that her remarkable courage, and even without the coordination of Xiang Yunjian and the others, she showed no signs of lying low at all.
The group hurriedly left the area at the foot of the mountain and ducked behind a building. Just as they were about to follow the planned route through the residential zone, Cheng Feng called for a halt and set down the bags she had been carrying.
Zhong Yijie reached out to help her carry them, but Cheng Feng waved him off. She rummaged through the packs and pulled out all the unused explosive weapons.
“Dividing the loot here?” Zhong Yijie took a step back, glancing around nervously. “This isn’t safe!”
Cheng Feng said, “We’re gearing up to turn the tables and strike back.”
Zhong Yijie’s heart raced. “We’re going back?”
He had already been terrified enough by Cheng Feng’s dragging her feet and refusing to come down the mountain earlier.
“A dark and windy night – great fortunes come from taking risks,” Cheng Feng said. “Right now, everyone up on the mountain is scrambling in panic, and there’s bound to be a bunch of people waiting to swoop in for leftovers. We’ve got the perfect timing, position, and momentum – what else would we do but counterattack?”
She tilted her head up, looking at Zhong Yijie from below. Behind her glasses, her eyes gleamed brightly in the night. “Are you really satisfied with just these seven or eight supply packs?”
Zhong Yijie glanced at their stash, which was practically overflowing with ammunition, then thought of the supplies Cheng Feng had hidden up on the mountain. In his heart, he thought: I am satisfied!
What more could he possibly want?!
The two new companions didn’t know about the cutthroat schemes up on the mountain, nor the thrill and danger of their journey down. But seeing how confidently and boldly Cheng Feng spoke, and how beautiful and heartwarming the loot in their hands was, they were already won over. They nodded along beside her, ready to follow her lead.
“Go on. You’ve always been the type to charge headfirst into a fight – don’t hold back on our account.”
“Listen to Cheng Feng. Don’t worry, we’ve got the rear covered.”
“Make some good money out there – we’re counting on you to support us.”
Zhong Yijie shot his companions a glare, then, realizing they probably couldn’t see it in the dark, reached out and shoved one of them.
What a bunch of sellouts – shameless!
These supply packs were clearly not as stacked as the ones from the opening wave, but by now everyone was probably in the same boat. At least they could make up for it with quantity, which was still decent.
“I’ll go with you,” Cheng Feng said, pointing at Zhong Yijie, then gesturing to the other two. “You two go hide the gear. Once that’s done, come back and help with the haul.”
The two designated ones nodded frantically, their steps suddenly light, as if they could take off flying any second.
Cheng Feng split half of the thermal weapons with Zhong Yijie, didn’t even offer a word of encouragement, and turned away to charge right back in.
Despite how dangerous the place was, she sprinted as if her feet were motorized, moving at breakneck speed.
But Zhong Yijie couldn’t voice-comm with her – he had to stay close just to talk to her, which made chasing after her both nerve-wracking and exhausting.
Along this stretch, he finally understood the kind of feeling his instructors had when watching him charge in recklessly. He empathized with them on a deep level.
Down at the foot of the mountain, quite a few sneaky figures were lurking about – just as Cheng Feng had predicted. Scouting the situation, trying to pick off leftovers, or looking to slip out of the combat zone and get back to safety – they had all converged in this area.
The ones up on the mountain didn’t dare come down. The ones down below didn’t dare go up.
Both sides were deadlocked, probing to see what the other was planning to do.
Zhong Yijie finally caught up and, once Cheng Feng had settled down for a moment, quickly placed a hand on her shoulder and asked in a low voice, “How are we playing this? Fight our way up? Or pick off a few kills from the side?”
Cheng Feng gestured for him to step back, then raised her arm and hurled something straight toward a shadowy spot ahead.
The examinees, already on edge like startled birds, immediately ducked back at the sound.
Cheng Feng pointed at the spot now billowing with smoke and said calmly, “Like I said -if you can blow ’em up, blow ’em up. If not, snipe ’em. And if neither works, toss a smoke grenade.”
What was the point of holding onto all that gear as souvenirs?
If you don’t use it, how are you going to get new stuff?
Zhong Yijie’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he struggled to digest that logic.
“Of course, it’s still best to use guns – we’ve got plenty of ammo and haven’t used them in a while.” Cheng Feng hugged her firearm to her chest. “There are still a lot of unclaimed supply packs up on the mountain that I couldn’t see earlier. The smoke should be clearing up by now. Let’s go up, grab them, and get out.”
Zhong Yijie clung to that one sentence as his lifeline.
Charging up the mountain wasn’t that hard. The people lingering at the foot didn’t know the exact situation up top, so they didn’t dare make any reckless moves and kept their distance.
And although their squad had already pulled out, the sound of gunfire and explosions on the mountain hadn’t stopped entirely – it just wasn’t as intense as before.
This wave of internal attrition would probably only end once the smoke fully cleared and both those inside and outside realized the mountain had already gone empty.
The two of them first swept the perimeter on the outskirts, clearing the edges. Then Cheng Feng tossed a smoke grenade and, with Zhong Yijie covering her, charged up the mountain.
On her previous trip, Cheng Feng had found the time to scatter nearly twenty explosive devices around the mountain and its base. Before they parted ways, she handed the detonator to Zhong Yijie, telling him to set off a fireworks show and take a breather if things got too intense.
Zhong Yijie was tasked with circling the foothills and blocking anyone trying to go up. Meanwhile, Cheng Feng took the opportunity to search for supply packs on the mountain.
Not long after, their two teammates also arrived to provide backup.
By now, it was already 3 a.m.
The fatigue levels of the examinees who had been up all night were all above 60%.
Cheng Feng and the others had been running around a lot and were closing in on 75%, with two “Sluggish” negative status effects showing on their stats.
After daybreak, the number of active examinees would increase significantly, making the competition even more dangerous. Seeing that the fighters in this chaotic battle still had plenty of ammunition, some examinees – unable to gauge the situation – hesitated and eventually chose to head back and rest. As a result, the pressure on the frontline wasn’t too heavy.
Cheng Feng and the others only kept up their counterattack until around 4 a.m. Considering that the early-risers among the examinees would be waking up soon, they decided to reduce their risk, quickly packed up their spoils, and formally withdrew.
They made it back to their base camp at exactly 4:29 a.m.
The two who had stayed behind hadn’t dared to sleep either, enduring hunger and exhaustion while keeping watch on the rooftop. When they saw the group appear, they let out long sighs of relief, their palms drenched in cold sweat.
Such were the worries of immense wealth – they always felt like some ruffian was about to come and rob them.
The four of them tossed the newly acquired supply packs onto the ground and slumped down, hurriedly sorting through everything while they still had a little energy left.
The haul was substantial.
Before withdrawing, they had detonated all the remaining explosives scattered nearby. Zhong Yijie, shuffling past in small steps, had even picked up two more along the way.
In total, they had 12 supply packs.
Cheng Feng’s own backpack still had about half its original supplies left.
Watermelon’s eyes gleamed as he said, “Amazing! How exactly did you guys manage to scavenge all that?”
Zhong Yijie, exhausted and barely able to keep his eyes open, vaguely pointed at Cheng Feng.
Cheng Feng explained rapidly, “There weren’t many people left on the mountain, but there were quite a few bodies. The smoke in some areas had almost cleared up with the wind, and the detector could scan nearby supplies. I noted the locations, fired a shot over, then rushed in to grab them.”
She tilted her head slightly, a little puzzled. “I was actually worried someone might be sniping or ambushing from a distance, but for some reason, everyone ran off as soon as I threw a smoke grenade.”
Zhong Yijie kept sorting the gear without stopping, but inside he was roaring: Do you really have no idea why?!
That smoke grenade of hers had practically become synonymous with bad luck!
Watermelon laughed out loud, and he and the injured teammate beside him traded exaggerated compliments in a singsong voice.
Though their bodies were weary, everyone’s spirits were running high.
“Almost missed it – our satiety meter is nearly bottomed out.” Watermelon picked up a piece of bread and asked, “Do you guys want all this food? Feels kind of useless to me.”
Cheng Feng was about to say to just toss it, but then she thought of Xiang Yunjian and the others and reluctantly said, “Ah, leave me more of the food too. I need to bring some for my useless teammates.”
The others found this remark oddly satisfying to hear and kept stuffing biscuits and drinking water into her pack, saying enthusiastically, “Take some more – it’s tough out there.”
“Bring enough for three days’ worth of rations, then you won’t have to fight over supplies at the equipment depot. That place is surrounded by maniacs – it’s dangerous, so stay far away from them.”
“Carrying four deadweights is really hard. Hang in there, Cheng Feng.”
