Seeing the person who rushed forward to hug Qi Yue first, Tang Ke forcibly held back the urge to pull the other person away. If it weren’t for the wrong time and place, there was no way he would indulge Han Fei like this.
With the people nearby constantly shooting glances at them, Qi Yue couldn’t help pushing a bit, whispering, “Let go, hurry and let go of me.”
Han Fei took quite a while to calm his emotions, his heart calming down from its excited, rapid beating. Hearing Qi Yue’s pleading-like words by his ear, he couldn’t help rubbing his stubbly chin hard against Qi Yue’s face. Only after hearing Qi Yue’s hiss of pain with satisfaction did he release him. Holding Qi Yue’s hand and ignoring the two murderous gazes beside him, he helped him down from the high wall.
Tang Ke couldn’t suppress his anger, grabbing Qi Yue’s other hand. His eyes were cold as he stared at the owner of that hand, warning, “Let go of him.”
Han Fei provoked him, pulling Qi Yue’s hand even closer to his own side. Tang Ke refused to back down, tugging Qi Yue toward himself. Qi Yue felt a bit dazed, being pulled back and forth between the two of them. In the end, only when Yan Bin spoke did the two reluctantly let go.
Yan Bin’s voice came from the side, “There’s no time for you two to fight over him. Notify everyone to evacuate in batches.” After speaking, he gave Qi Yue a meaningful look.
Qi Yue’s anger shot straight up at that look. What was that expression? And what were those words just now, fighting over him? Did he compare himself to a woman? His face darkened, and he let out a scoff, turning away from that man. To think he had even planned on forgiving him before. Looks like there’s no need, he really is hateful.
Most of the people were delaying time at the wall, trying to gather more zombies into this U-shaped dead-end. On the other side, in the empty space between the walls, a short man was sneaking around, fiddling with the helicopter.
A burly man in black jumped down from the helicopter, asking, “Bro, what are you doing?”
“Hehe, we’re about to leave, the captain ordered me to check the aircraft.” The short man replied a bit uneasily.
The man in black walked to his side, lowered his head and checked the body of the aircraft. His attitude turned fierce, and he waved impatiently, “Go, go, go. I don’t care what d*mn captain you have. The helicopter’s already been checked. No problems. Get away from here.”
The short man nodded and bowed, agreeing. The man in black watched him run off in panic, then inspected the area where the short man had been. After finding nothing wrong, he returned to the helicopter with suspicion.
“What’s wrong?” the pilot asked.
“Nothing. Some irrelevant person. Just take care of your aircraft.”
The sturdy man in black looked fierce. The pilot shrugged and continued examining the instruments.
No one had any big reaction to Liao Feifan chopping someone earlier. Though a bit sinister, in dangerous situations it was common for people to risk others to save themselves. They just felt some pity, such a beautiful woman couldn’t escape the fate of being eaten by zombies.
To prevent infection of the wound on his face, Liao Feifan received simple healing from the healer accompanying them, and the bleeding had stopped. The always gentle and sunny person now wore a shadowed expression. Stepping down from the wall and heading toward the helicopters, a young man with an unremarkable face, one easy to forget, approached and came close to Liao Feifan.
The young man nodded at him, secretly handed him a small device, and whispered, “Everything Miss Liu instructed earlier has been completed.”
Liao Feifan took the item, glanced at Qi Yue, Yan Bin, and the others under the wall, then nodded at the man. “Proceed according to plan.”
The man replied and hurried away. There were five helicopters total. According to Liu Yue’s instructions, all of them had timed explosives installed. They themselves would leave by the small path; their helicopter was parked behind the mountain.
The earth-type users’ wall was already showing cracks, and the ability users on the wall were withdrawing. The buried explosives had begun detonating one by one. The interior of the wall was also filled with explosives, ready to be destroyed once everyone left.
“President, the devices have all been removed.” A burly man in black reported to Yan Bin.
Yan Bin’s face was expressionless. He merely raised his head slightly. The man turned and left.
Buzz, buzz, buzz—one helicopter, two helicopters lifted off and left.
Boom—the wall collapsed, and the zombie horde flooded in.
The third helicopter lifted. It had barely risen when it wobbled in the air, circled a few times, and then flew straight into a distant zombie tide. With a bang, it exploded, body parts and debris scattering through the air.
Yan Bin glanced at Han Fei. The man’s face had turned pale, clearly he didn’t know what had happened to that aircraft.
“Get down.” Yan Bin didn’t say anything else and ordered everyone on the aircraft to get down.
Han Fei jumped down, quickly took out a helicopter from his spatial storage, and ran toward the military helicopter Qi Yue was inside.
“You go first, don’t worry about me.” He released his ability and wiped out a small wave of zombies approaching from the front.
Yan Bin looked at the unmoving helicopter not far away and couldn’t help cursing.
“F*ck. You all go up. Return to M base.”
Following behind Han Fei, Yan Bin strode forward with two bodyguards close behind.
Seeing the crashed helicopter, Qi Yue felt dazed. Only when he could tell it wasn’t Sun Yang’s aircraft did he relax slightly, though his expression remained tight.
Seeing their bosses leaving, the black-clothed gang members grew anxious, but still obeyed orders and boarded the helicopter Han Fei had produced. They had faith that with Han Fei’s spatial ability, abundant supplies, and the president’s wisdom, they would surely escape safely. The helicopter rose high and flew toward M base.
Han Fei unleashed his power at the zombies coming endlessly toward them, a chain of electric waves burning several zombies around him to ashes. He glanced at Yan Bin, and after clearing the zombies around them together, they moved toward Qi Yue’s helicopter.
“Why’d you come over?” Han Fei asked.
Yan Bin frowned, glancing at the helicopter surrounded by zombies. “You’re my brother. I can’t leave you.”
“Just because we’re brothers? Nothing else?” Han Fei couldn’t stop himself from asking.
Yan Bin hesitated for a moment, his voice low. “Also because of him.”
After that, no more words were exchanged. The two silently focused on killing the zombies.
Tang Ke grabbed the pilot’s collar, furious. “What’s going on? Why aren’t we taking off?”
The pilot panicked and looked aggrieved. With a mass of zombies behind them, he wanted to leave even more. Stammering, he said, “The instruments were deliberately damaged… it can’t start.”
“Damaged? Then fix it, d*mn it!” Looking at the zombies slamming the cabin door, Tang Ke pushed the pilot back into his seat and roared.
The pilot was about to cry. Seeing the swarm of zombies, his legs went weak. Choking up, he said, “It can’t be fixed… the parts are broken… they need replacing… it’ll take hours…”
D*mn d*mn d*mn, Tang Ke was so angry he wanted to curse everyone’s ancestors. What was the use of raising this group of useless trash?
“Get down. Go.” Lin Yuze stayed calm. They couldn’t stay in the aircraft; they had to find another way.
Qi Yue nodded, taking deep breaths. His eyes scanned the area while his hands didn’t stop, swapping the modified magazine on his gun. After the quick change, he raised his hand and swiftly fired behind Lin Yuze, dropping a zombie.
They disembarked and cleared the zombies approaching them. Han Fei and Yan Bin converged. Han Fei still had helicopters in his spatial storage, but looking around, the open ground was filled with zombies, there was nowhere left where a helicopter could take off.
Liao Feifan fiddled with his device, hoping for a reaction, but none of the helicopters responded. How could this be? Liu Yue had clearly told him all the helicopters were rigged with timers. Seeing that two had successfully taken off already, Liao Feifan pressed it repeatedly in frustration.
With a snap, Liao Feifan smashed the device to the ground and stomped on it.
He unwillingly glanced at the helicopters on the field, then said to his people, “Go.”
The helicopter Liu Yue had prepared earlier was parked by the shore. Bringing a few people with him, Liao Feifan entered a dried abandoned well behind them. The well connected to a tunnel, though calling it a tunnel wasn’t quite accurate. It was originally a natural cave. Since the back of the mountain was near the sea, the villagers dug through it for convenience. Only the villagers knew of it. Liao Feifan and Liu Yue learned of it only by chance, they had saved a migrant worker from that village early in the apocalypse.
Wind, fire, thunder, plant, various abilities all activated. In the distance, the timed explosives had already begun counting down. Consecutive explosions shook the ground. Their group’s numbers were steadily decreasing; from time to time, someone was careless and got clawed by a zombie.
They were forced back step by step. Qi Yue was unconsciously being shielded in the middle. He scanned around for high-level zombies and used his gun to fire at them.
“Over there?”
Following Qi Yue’s finger, they saw Liao Feifan’s group disappearing behind a section of wall.
With group-attack abilities clearing a path, they reached the spot where Liao Feifan had vanished. There lay a dried well. They lifted the cover, climbed down, and shut it.
The zombies that rushed over didn’t find them. Following the scent, they reached the well and began pounding on it.
Above them, zombie roars echoed. No one dared relax. They began searching for the exit. Unexpectedly, the bottom of the well wasn’t like an ordinary well with just one passage, there were branching paths in all directions.
Han Fei took many lamps from his spatial storage and handed them out.
“This way.” Lin Yuze held a flashlight and walked toward one path, gesturing for the others to follow.
Following behind him, they soon reached another crossroads. Qi Yue tilted his head at Lin Yuze, waiting for him to decide. No one else objected; they were wandering anyway, having someone pick a direction was better than nothing.
Lin Yuze pointed at one blocked tunnel. “Here.”
The entrance was blocked by a huge stone. They worked together to push it aside, entered, and then pushed the stone back into place.
Liao Feifan, holding a flashlight, urged, “Which way?”
They were lost. There were too many branching paths. After circling for a long time, they realized they’d been walking in loops.
A short man was sweating heavily, hesitant. “This… Miss Liu said this path.”
“How is that possible? You must remember wrong.” Liao Feifan said suspiciously.
“I really didn’t remember wrong, Miss Liu said—”
“Ah!”
Before he could finish, he was attacked. With a crack, the flashlight fell, and after a scream, he died instantly.
The group panicked from the sudden attack. When they saw that the attacker was the advanced female zombie in red from before, they fell into even deeper fear.
The zombie looked at them, mouth covered in blood, her rotting arm holding a severed hand, crunching on it.
“Ugh—”
Someone couldn’t help vomiting.
The zombie tilted her head, studying them. Then she threw away the severed hand and walked toward them.
This zombie was different from the fully rotted ones. Her face still resembled her former appearance; the rot wasn’t too severe. Liao Feifan involuntarily stepped back. The pressure this zombie exuded was overwhelming, filling him with terror.
“Yaoyao.”
The female zombie stopped, tilted her head, and stared at Liao Feifan, her head swaying as if thinking.
Liao Feifan whispered to the ability users, “Don’t attack yet.”
The moment he saw this, he knew he’d guessed right. The missing Du Mengyao had indeed died and turned into a high-level zombie. No wonder she’d seemed familiar earlier.
“You’re Yaoyao, right? I missed you so much. How did you become like this? Where have you been all these years?”
The red-eyed zombie suddenly let out a growl and continued moving forward.
Liao Feifan, drenched in sweat, stubbornly continued, “Yaoyao, did you forget me? I’m your senior, Feifan.”
Hearing this, the red-eyed zombie paused, but did not stop.
Seeing her approach, Liao Feifan shouted anxiously, “Did you forget Xin’er? Senior Xin’er, my girlfriend. Yaoyao, think about how close the three of us were. Do you really want to kill me? Xin’er would be angry.”
When the zombie heard that name, her body actually froze.
Liao Feifan eyed a nearby passage and inched toward it while talking. “Yaoyao, when you disappeared, I looked for you for so long. I knew Liu Yue harmed you. I didn’t expect she’d be that vicious. And Xin’er, Xin’er was harmed by her too.”
Seeing the red-eyed zombie tilt her head as if listening, Liao Feifan spoke carefully. “That venomous woman… I’ve long wanted to avenge you. But I was powerless. Liu Yue had healing abilities. As long as she lived, she could save more people. For the sake of our ideals, for saving more people, I had to swallow my anger.”
He had only learned what Liu Yue had done later. Combined with what Du Mengyao said before disappearing, and with Cao Xin’er’s death, Liao Feifan had guessed the truth.
The red-eyed zombie growled again but this time not at them. She was facing the side, where another figure had appeared.
Following her gaze, Liao Feifan almost fell over.
The flashlight wasn’t bright, but enough to show the figure’s outline and appearance. The red and white clothes were originally white. The exposed skin was the zombie’s characteristic dark greenish-blue, but not rotten. A large chunk of flesh was missing from the face, making it too horrifying to look at directly.
“Little… Little Yue…” Liao Feifan’s voice trembled violently.
